Occupy! Alaska With TGR

Are ski movies scripted? There is a ton of planning and pre-production that goes into every ski film. At the beginning of the winter, a theme and a title are created, but as the peak of the season arrives, it becomes clear that Mother Nature is directing the film. This year, as it became obvious that the Lower 48 was going to have a drier than average winter and Alaska was on track to have a record snow year. TGR decided to head north and set up shop in AK to film The Dream Factory.
Words and Photos by Pete O'Brien.
[image]Toward the end of our second trip to Girdwood, Sage Cattabriga-alosa sessioned this cornice. Here he is bringing around a huge 720 a few days before heading off to Colorado and taking third place at the 2012 Red Bull Cold Rush.
[image]TGR Founder Todd Jones has been on dozens of filming trips to Alaska over the years. Here's Todd, getting some establishing shots at night in downtown Anchorage.
[image]TGR Cinematographer Dustin Handley shoots at one of the many different snowmobile trailheads we visited this winter in AK.
[image]Alaskans are a different breed. It seems like everyone up there owns a snowmachine, a bush plane, or both.
[image]Seth Morrison's AK season pass.
[image]Tim Durtschi was a welcome addition to the TGR crew this year. His laid-back attitude with an element of "disturbed artist" was a perfect match to the rest of the team. Not to mention he's a beast when it comes to getting shots.[image]Thompson Pass, Valdez. So much has changed since heli skiing was adopted in Alaska. This place continues to be the ultimate spot to get the best run of your life. A visit to Valdez should be on every rider's bucket list.
[image]Driving around AK with sleds and hitting a bunch of different heli zones this winter wasn't all fun and games.
[image]We have to give props to all of the behind the scene's characters who made it possible for the TGR crew to spend the winter in Alaska. It's never easy to split up a dinner check after you're done eating.
[image]Next fall when we're all jonesing to ride powder, everyone will have a stand out memory of a day or a zone or a storm cycle from last winter. Our time exploring the area overlooking Seward, Alaska on snowmobiles will be my stand out memory. Sage cranking through some blower pow a couple of miles outside of Resurrection Bay.

Haines Is Heaven - TGR Films The Dream Factory

Our tour of Alaska continues on, with our last stop: Haines. Tim Durtschi, Chris Benchetler and Nick Martini are flying with Southeast Alaska Backcountry Adventures looking for steep lines and natural hits as we film for The Dream Factory.
The terrain in Haines has more exposure, more sluff management, and is generally more raw than the other spots we've hit in Alaska this season. Check out these eight photos from the trip.
[image]Nick Martini gets his first taste of heli-skiing in Alaska.
[image]Out of all the places we visited in Alaska this year, Haines had the steepest terrain.
[image]We rolled right into a long stretch of high pressure in Haines.
[image]A visit to Haines isn't complete without a cruise on the Sundowner. The boys got the chance to haul crab pots onto the deck of the boat and check out wildlife from the water.
[image]This is the closest Chris Benchetler has ever been to bald eagles in the wild.
[image]Tim Durtschi skiing a 2000-foot warm up lap.
[image]Benchetler and Martini discuss their next move.
[image]This is the top quarter of a line Benchetler eyed on our first day out. It ended up being a first descent, which is becoming harder to get as more people come to Haines.

Urban Assault On Alaska For The Dream Factory

It's no secret that Alaska has been getting hammered by snow this Winter. Since December, Anchorage has been the site of multiple urban film and photo shoots.
TGR has visited AK on many film trips over the years to document big mountain riding. This year the team went on the search to see what the urban scene is like in AK.

[image]Tim Durtschi grew up skiing at Alyeska. He tried this rail for the first time when he was 15 years old. With all of the urban crews migrating to Alaska to film this year, the cops have figured out most of the spots and getting busted is a regular occurrence. We didn't get shut down here by cops but we did get shut down by a train conductor.

Dash Longe And Tim Durtschi Living Large In Alaska

Dash Longe and Tim Durtschi continue their winter in Alaska by hitting alpine terrain when there's good weather and trees and pillows during the storms.
Words and photos by Pete O'Brien.
[image] Dash natural gully gap jump.
[image]Durtschi 720 near Girdwood Alaska. He commented that it's more productive to ski this terrain with a sled rather than a heli because you don't have to worry about time or money while you're sessioning.
[image]This time of year there's good light in Alaska from about 9 am to 9 pm, but we've only seen a handful of sunny days on our trip so far.
[image]On some of the bigger lines the boys can only sled up so high before they have to start clawing their way up a knife edge ridge. With such a big snow year in Alaska, moats have been a serious danger. As the cornice on the ridgeline gets heavier with more snow, it begins to peal away from the ridge creating a fissure that is hard to spot and easy to fall in.
[image]Durtschi sending a high angle cauliflower line.
[image]Dash scoping a line at 8:30 pm with 3000' below him.
[image]Durtschi jibbing the Wizard's Staff near Johnson Pass, Alaska.
[image]Part of the reason we hauled our sleds all the way to Alaska is to ski in the backcountry on days like this. Tree skiing in Alaska is generally pretty tight, but we've been able to find a few open slots.

Jibbing Icebergs - TGR Takes It To The Ice While Filming The Dream Factory

With the help of local Girdwood, Alaska, snowboarder Paul Laca, Teton Gravity Research recently spent time sessioning some of the icebergs in the area. After clearing off the fresh powder and getting a snowmobile tow-in, Dash Longe, Dylan Hood, Tim Durtschi and Sage Cattabriga-Alosa hit up a few different chunks of ice that are currently frozen into a lake.Glaciers form where more snow falls than melts and the ice forms when the pressure of fallen snow compresses the snow beneath it. The epic snowfall in Alaska this year will likely have an effect on the glaciers and icebergs next summer.

Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Dylan Hood, Dash Longe and Tim Durtschi made the trek back to Girdwood, Alaska, to film for Teton Gravity Research's next movie, "The Dream Factory." This time the crew brought their snowmachines for a high-octane powder assualt on the mountains.
So far the crew has explored four different trailheads in the area, which have provided more than enough terrain to play on. It's been a nice surprise to show up at the parking lot each morning to see no other cars, crews, or slednecks. In some cases the boys have been able to access the same terrain as a heli on their snowmachines.
All photos by Pete O'Brien.[image] Sage snowmachined for 10 minutes to get to the top of this peak. He ghost rode it to the bottom where it's patiently waiting for him.
[image]Tim Durtschi on his way to winning a pillow fight.
[image]In Alaska, sleds are called snowmachines.
[image]Dylan Hood sending it somewhere between Girdwood and Seward.
[image]Alyeska just broke the 700-inch mark since October. After a long day of snowmachining, Sage and the crew shred the resort until last chair.
[image]Dash Longe taking it huge on the guinea pig hit, as usual.
[image]Sage popping spines.
[image]Durtschi bumped into this natural feature after riding his snowmachine for 3 miles over whoop-dee-doos. A 3-mile approach at 3 miles per hour.

The TGR crew has been sessioning Girdwood, Alaska all week. Consecutive sleeper storms have been keeping things fresh. Whether we're taking the tram at Alyeska Ski Resort, riding in a snowcat, or flying in a helicopter at Chugach Powder Guides, the crew has been getting the goods with the help of local knowledge. Check the recent photos below as we film for TGR's 2012 movie, "The Dream Factory."

Last week, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Dylan Hood, Dash Longe and Tim Durtschi left the lower 48 to hit some of the powder in Alaska that has been making national headlines. The boys rolled into Girdwood on what Alyeska locals were calling "the best day of the season." For most of us, it was our first real powder day of the year and after about six tram laps, our legs were Jell-o and everyone had huge grins on their faces.
Since then, Girdwood has seen six-strait days of high pressure and cold temps, which has kept the snow soft. We're slotted for two more days of sun before another storm rolls in this weekend. It looks like the western U.S. is finally getting the snow they desperately needed, as well.
Winter has arrived and it's great to know you can wake up, put the boots on, and get after it.
Below are some photos from the past few days.

Tim Durtschi grew up skiing at Alyeska and has been guiding us around to all of his secret stashes.

The Boys scoping the gnar ... from the bar.

Sage is a seasoned AK veteran. He's been team leader on this trip.

If you've never been to AK, this year would be a great time to go.

1-4 the Road

From the beginning of the season in Europe, to the 2 months spent in Canada, this season has been epic. After 72 days on the road chasing powder, I'm back at home crossing my fingers for another spring storm to hit Snowbird. It will be fun to watch One for the Road when it comes out this September and conjure up memories of awesome weather in France, armpit deep days at Baldface, and apres shred with the Whistler boys. Here are some of the highlights from my Winter.
**Hitting the road out of the Alps at sunrise. Driving towards palm trees and sea.**
[image]
**Sage and Benchetler contemplating the right spot to duck this rope in France.**
[image]
**Sage natural take off 720.**

**That microphone isn't even plugged in, and where are the cameras?**
[image]
**Rory Bushfield joined the TGR team this year. It's awesome, every photo I have of him he's laughing in it.**
[image]
**Baldface was the most fun trip I've been on in a while. Sage, Dylan, Dash, Grete, four camera guys a photographer and a guide. We would all stumble out of the cat at the top each run, laughing at whatever Dash just said, and be ready to slay some of the longest, fluffiest tree runs of our lives.**
[image]
**Grete, Baldface.**
[image]
**Grete 720.**
[image]
**Callum, Rutherford BC.**
[image]
**Callum Heli skiing in the backyard.**
[image]
**Callum has one of the smoothest big mountain styles out there. He's a super mellow dude that is usually the first guy to get a shot on a film day. He'll get the ball rolling, which helps the other riders out when it comes to getting shots.**
[image]
**This is one of Griffen's first shots he got in Pemberton. Later that evening at around 7pm, he got his second shot. A banger!**
[image]
**Dylan Rutherford BC.**
[image]
**Dylan was just hitting natural features in Pemberton. No jump building. He would session hits that no one had seen before in a zone that's had plenty of eyes on it over the years.**
[image]
**Pappa Jordan. Now it's on Ian Mac's hit list AND Todd Ligare's hit list. Some years it doesn't fill in right and you just have to be ready to tackle it when it gets good. That could be one morning out of the whole season. Ligare getting bucked off the second hit.**
[image]
**Ligare backflip.**
[image]
**Rick showing Dana some heli recon footage.**
[image]
**Scouted the zone, got the heli, record amount of snow, bluebird, and we're setting off avys left and right. Let's go home.**
[image]
**Sage scoping some natural features at the Snowbird comp.**
[image]
**So long Canada!!**

Santa Rosa in Las Lenas

I had the pleasure to experience the Santa Rosa hit Las Lenas this year and am now fully hooked on it.
**Torrecillas**
[image]
**Top of Eduardo's**
[image]
**It can get a little WINDY in Las Lenas**
[image]
**Three runs on a powder day is something to be proud of at just a handful of resorts in the world.**
[image]
**Jose hosted a traditional Asado. It was a tasty treat on the night of the big storm.**
[image]
**Jenn and I near the top of Cerro Martin. The entrance was steep, firm and exposed. Glad to be a regular footer on that one.**
[image]
**I bought my plane ticket for Mendoza to Santiago back in May, for $29.50USD. This view of Aconcagua out of that plane's window, topped off the trip.**
[image]
**Towards the end of the trip meals were steak twice a day and wine every night. A day in Mendoza to culturize was helpful.**
[image]
**The Jerk sighting.**
[image]
**It was really helpful to see the terrain before the 60cm storm came in. On the first blue day after the storm, even with a rapid increase in temperatures, the danger was more from hidden rocks than Avys.**
[image]
**Valle Hermosa**

After watching the teaser for Light the Wick, it was cool to reminisce about last Winter. Photos and video always conjure up memories of choking powder days, wet boots and passing out at 6:30PM. If there's one thing I can take away from last season it's; you can wake up early for the best day of the year and get nothing, or roll up to the mountain late on a mediocre day and slay it. No matter how many weather forecasts and webcams you look at, there's no way of knowing the current conditions unless you're currently in them. Thanks for another epic year everyone!Pete

This is a blog post I did while shooting High Life in 2003. I camped for 25 days with Chris Collins near Mt. Bachelor. It snowed everyday. Click HERE to watch a behind the scenes video from our camp spot.Last week, Sage and David Crichton tore up the backcountry near Mt. Bachelor. We managed to squeeze in one last park session on Memorial Day, then spent the next 4 days in the backcountry. Sage had scoped out a gnarly 26 long stair rail in Bend, that Crichton got after about 15 attempts. We took the sled out and built a backcountry spine jump that Sage kept hitting just for the fun of it, and ended up stomping a very stylish switch cork 3 safety grab. Crichton spun some true tail 7’s, then he scoped a gem. Right next to the spine jump was a cornice line that could be jumped as a rhythm section, as 2, 30 foot gaps. It was perfectly shaped as a huge #3. Crichton floated 2 consecutive tailgrab 3s over the natural gaps and greased the last flat landing. It was a great close to an awesome season of filming.

Dylan, Sammy and Dash have been exploring all of the many terrain features that the glacier has to offer. With every hit we come across, the boys either session and get a shot or we put it on the checklist for later. There is such a variety of terrain that you can choose to do a step down jump if the snow is good, a step up jump if it's slushy or hit a natural quarterpipe whenever you feel like it.
**In the last week the crew has endured a seized up sled, 2 broken cameras, a broken trailer axle, stolen skis, broken bindings and a knee to the face, among other things. Once you get the sled on snow, it's easy to forget the stuff it took to get there.**
[image]
**We're going to post up here for a little while.**

Over the last 48 hours Sammy Carlson has logged 24 of them floating, launching, spinning and flipping in the backcountry.
We timed it perfectly, rolling into an epic zone right after a snow storm and scoring blue skies.
There were a few features that we spent some time building, but most of the stuff he hit natural.
Check it out.

Wiley, Dylan and Sammy session some cliffs

Wiley, Dylan and Sammy scored a couple of bluebird days last week and got to hit some new features in Utah.
Hitting cliffs for the first time is always tricky. It's only after you ride away clean that you know you had the right speed and angle of trajectory.

**Dylan Hood about to set down a clean switch 360. **
[image]
**Dylan Hood's zero spin was a little too far to the left and with too much speed. The landing wasn't pretty.**
[image]
**The boys have been using the Ripxx this year to document their speed and airtime.**

**Wiley Miller stomping a cork 720 off a new hit. We've walked past this thing dozens of times without ever noticing it.**

Dylan Hood hits some backcountry gap jumps near Sun Valley

Dylan Hood recently took a trip to Idaho for a backcountry gap jump session.
It couldn't have lined up any better. Smith Optics made it happen by creating a backcountry Superpark in a spot just north of Sun Valley.
The timing was perfect. The crew slept in a yurt, 10 miles out in the backcountry and woke up to 8 inches of fresh and blue skies.
**Dylan guinea pigging a huge gap jump.**
[image]
**All of the take offs had a fresh blanket of pow.**
[image]
**The new snow made for some great shots. Dylan Hood rodeo 5.**
[image]
**Dylan spinning a freeride lap.**
[image]
**Most people would be intimidated by hitting this cliff strait. Dylan floats a drifty 180.**
[image]
**Wake up in a yurt... cook some bacon... shred some pillows.**
[image]
**Dylan Hood cork 7 tailgrab.**
[image]
**Dylan shirtless tree bonk.**
[image]
**Dylan Hood getting the shot for next year's movie.**

Deeper: Neil and Forrest head south in search of Pow

Story & Photos by Pete O'Brien This season has brought some great snow to the Southwestern States. Neil and Forrest recently went down to the desert to score some waist deep pow. The snow was way more blower than they expected and the terrain was mind boggling, drooly, trippy, etc. Check it out.Pete
[image]
**Forrest and Neil scoping their lines**
[image]
**Yep it's legit**
[image]
**Neil slashing it up in cowboy country**
[image]
**Avy danger was super sketch. Forrest dropped about 5 minutes after Neil, who's track is already getting sloppy.**
[image]
**After postholeing for 45 minutes in knee deep pow with a 60 pound pack (including 3 tripods), I was sweating like a pig, my glasses were fogged and all I wanted to see was a clear site of this zone with no trees blocking the way. As soon as I looked up and saw this through my foggy glasses, it was almost like seeing a Grizzly Bear. I was frozen in my tracks, and after taking a few snapshots I hightailed it out of there.**
[image]
**This is a close up of what spooked me beyond Space Mountain. The collection zone was around the corner, and about a half mile up.**
[image]
**Forrest on his way to acid dropping a waterfall in the desert.**

**We were lucky enough to see this place at sunrise after a 2 foot dump. Although nobody dropped in (you're not allowed to ride it), we spent about an hour just watching new things open up as the light hit it.**

Forrest Shearer and Neil Provo have been keeping me in shape and missing my snowmobile this week. Here are some of the shots from the last couple of days. We got one A+ bluebird day last Tuesday which the boys took full advantage of. Forrest scored two worthy lines in one spot which forced us to research some new zones. Lots more to come.Check it out.Pete
[image]
**Forrest Shearer throwing down**
[image]
**Forrest exiting a multi pillow drop as Neil looks on.**
[image]
**Forrest Shearer. This was one of the most fluid pillow lines I've filmed all year. He was maching out the bottom.**
[image]
**Foot accessed shots take a little more time.**
[image]
**When Neil Provo showed up to this zone his first thought was; this is confusing.**
[image]**I totally missed the film shot of this because I couldn't see anything. After about 20 minutes of waiting for the fog to clear, it just got worse so Neil dropped while he could still see.**
[image]**Neil finds the line through the maze.**
[image]
**Neil Provo.**
[image]
**Neil Provo switch 180 to pillow mash.**
[image]
**Neil Provo. This run is timeless.**
[image]
**Neil Provo. Burly!**
[image]
**A few days ago we were sessioning the same zone as the Absinthe crew. While Forrest and Neil were hiking for their second laps, Jules Reymond walked up and did a soul slash just because the snow looked so sparkly. It was cool to see a top level pro out there on an A+ day not stressed about getting shots and just enjoying a beautiful winter day.**

Bus Laps

Wiley Miller’s sled has been gathering dust since he discovered the Alta to Brighton bus lap. “I could film a segment here” was his description of the zone after he put some GS turns in a seriously peppered, exposed face.
Neil Provo has been riding his splitboard as if it’s a normal freestyle deck. Yesterday he pointed a pillow line from the top, and exploded the lower pillows, stomping the line while staying right on the edge of being out of control.
It has been cold in Utah with the occasional 5 inch refresher and sucker holes for light. This is our first downday in over a week and I’m sending off a bunch of shot film, my face is sunburned, and there’s a big smile.

** Wileys line goes through the pepper and into the chute. The battery in my still camera died while it was set up in the cold and I missed the still shot. Well have to wait to see the video.**
[image]** I shot this photo using a remote trigger from 100 feet away and chose the angle because it meant I would have to hike back and forth between this camera and my filming camera. Although I didnt anticipate Wiley popping so big it kept my toes from getting frostbite inside of my ski boots.**
