  • Announcing The Further and Dre Announcing The Further and Dream Factory Tour Winners

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

The dust has finally settled from the 2012 film tour, and the grand prize winners have been drawn. Both films this year provided a whole slew of amazing giveaways, and hopefully you walked away with something fresh from our sponsors.

      And the winners are…

Jeremy Jones’ Further, presented by O’Neill

Grand Prize: John from Bellingham, WA won the trip for two to ride at Squaw Valley. We connected with John just after his trip, and it sounds like it was a pretty epic adventure.  “The bluebird conditions, variety of terrain and size of Squaw Valley were incredible!  The mountain is so large that we were having trouble keeping track of which chair went where for the first two days!  We're already planning a return trip for next year and will be bringing our friends from our home mountain, Mt. Baker.  A big thanks from Belinda and I to Squaw Valley and TGR for making this amazing trip possible!”

Runner up: Karta from Boulder, CO is headed to Japan to shred powder courtesy of Cloudline Tours.  After seeing the Japan segments from Further, she couldn’t have been happier, and we can’t wait to see the pictures.

Second Place: Last but far from least, the head-to-toe O’Neill outerwear and a new board from Jones Snowboards goes to Jennifer in Boston, MA.

      The Dream Factory

Grand Prize: A heli-skiing trip for two courtesy of Alaska Heliskiing goes to Garrett from Colorado.  Pretty sure we heard his screams of excitement all the way up in Jackson Hole.  Garrett has yet to take the trip but we look forward to his report and some pictures.

Runner Up: Caroline from Kentucky scored the trip for two to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.  Unfortunately she is fresh off an ACL tear but Jackson Hole has been awesome in working with her to shift the prize to a summer filled with mountain biking and hiking rehab…Her dream of skiing Jackson’s legendary terrain is going to have to wait another year.

Second Place: Ben in Colorado is getting hooked up with head-to-toe outerwear from The North Face and a pair of skis from Atomic.

From all of us at Teton Gravity Research, THANK YOU for making the 2012 tour a memorable one.  The tours reached close to 300 cities combined across the globe, and without your amazing support every year, it simply would not be possible. Enjoy the rest of your season, and see you next fall!

  • Filming for The Co-Lab Filming for The Co-Lab

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

      Axel Peterson

Hailing from Bozeman, Montana, The Bridger Brigade’s Axel Peterson has been hard at work filming an edit for The Co-Lab. He and his crew have been hard at work skiing film worthy lines with speed and aggression for quite a while now and he thinks it’s his time to shine. TGR caught up with him on his attempt at $100,000 and The Co-Lab glory.

TETON GRAVITY RESEARCH: What motivated you, besides the $100k, to enter The Co-Lab?

Axel Peterson: I have been creating ski edits for four years now at a somewhat underground level, and I thought this competition would be a good way to get our name out there and see how we stack up against everyone else.

TGR: What do you think the most important aspect is, in a winning edit? (Music, Athlete, Location..etc.)

AP: I think all play an important role in creating a quality and unique edit. Number one will be the athlete, not the 'Name', but rather the level of skiing.  A nice mix of burly lines and stomped tricks will make for the most enjoyable edit to watch.  Also, a mix of terrain such as pillows, gnarly lines, couloirs, natural features, etc. will be an important aspect for a winning edit.  I'm a big fan of using lesser known music rather than mainstream songs for an edit.  Personally, I love edits where I hear a song I've never heard.  A good song will be important in setting the mood, pace, and overall feel of the edit.

TGR: What’s the biggest obstacle you came across in creating your edit?

AP: So far, the biggest obstacle has been timing.  On numerous occasions we have been hiking perfect pow lines in the sun, and by the time we reach the top it is socked in and puking snow.  So just getting unlucky with weather, and also me forgetting my memory cards for my camera (haha) have been the only issues that have cost us a few good shots.

TGR: Who are you most excited to see enter the Contest?

AP: Of course I'm stoked to see what the 'top dogs' come up with, but mostly I'm excited to see what the lesser know filmers and athletes create.  It's awesome when an unknown team blows everyone's mind. It is going to be a high level of competition, and I can't wait to see every edit that is entered!

TGR: Who are you working with on the edit?

AP:I've been skiing every day this season with Randy Evans. It's been super fun filming with Randy this year and watching him push himself.  He has really stepped it up this winter by stomping some technical lines and sweet tricks.  We already have a few quality shots in the bag so far, and we will be working hard through the end of May to produce an edit that hopefully stacks up with the other entries. Randy just won the 'Ticket to Tailgate' competition, so we are heading to AK next week to stack some more shots! I have also been filming a lot this season with Steve Popovich. I know he is planning on submitting an edit, and I can't wait to see what he comes up with.

  • Resort Review: Silverton Mount Resort Review: Silverton Mountain Colorado An Exhilarating, Unforgettable Experience

    • From: benkoelker
    • Description:

      Silverton Mountain

You've heard of it.  If you haven't been for a visit and you finally smarten up and go there, these are a few things that may happen.  A four hour drive may turn into a seven hour drive.  The roads out there during a dump are no joke with AWD or even 4WD.  If you don't have either, find a friend who does.  You don't want to die on the way in…  On the way back home you may be OK with it…  $139 gets you a guided tour of the mountain.  With one chairlift Silverton Mountain is all hiker access off top.  After you park, you are directed to a yurt where you sign in.  First thing in the morning you will smell spilled carpet beer as you sign your life away and employees bellow simple instructions. If you don't own a beacon, a shovel and an avalanche probe, this is where you rent them. Behind this cozy little yurt they hide a helicopter in the woods.  It's just sitting there in the snow.

This is not Vail.  They offer guided trips as well as unguided depending on the day.  Check their website for all the updated information, They also offer heli-trips at $999/ day or $159 for a single lap.  A guide is highly recommended, and necessary during most of the season, to access all of the 1,819 acres of Silvertons terrain..  Outside the check-in yurt you will be herded into groups of eight plus a guide.  Most members of this group will have duct tape on some part of there gear.  Most likely they will all rip.  Your guide will also rip. This is not likely, this is a fact.  Your guide may say in a loud voice to your group, even before he or she introduces him or herself, “This mountain may kill you today.”  You will agree and immediately understand that this mountain is much more likely to kill you if you do not listen to your guide.  Your guide will make sure everyone can at the very least turn on their beacons and put a probe together, then assess the groups ability as far ask hiking speed and which terrain everyone is comfortable riding in.  Once at the top of the lift your hike may take ten to forty-five minutes.  You want people who can keep up with your group, the group being only as strong as its weakest hiker.

Expect random explosions throughout the valley as the helicopter bombs for avalanches.  Expect the hike to have some scary in it.  Sometimes you will use a guide rope so that you don't fall to your death.  Your guide goes first.  Every single time, employee benefits.  On most runs you drop one at a time for safety.  The guide will say, for example, “count to ten after I disappear over that ridge and then the first person can drop.”  First?  Did he say whoevers first?  Who's first on the first run of the day??  Nervous shuffling...  No worries if you are courteous, there will be plenty of snow.  Runs at Silverton include wide open powder fields, cliff and cornice drops, tighter tree runs, chutes, gullies and pretty much anything your group can handle.

Your group, your guide and the snow conditions dictate what is skiable.  Avalanches are common, but to date no one has ever been fully buried.  We spoke to a skier in the lot who was partially buried that day.  He apparently didn't listen to his guide.  Listen to your guide.  It's possible some skier in your group may break out a bottle of breakfast champagne to pass around on the traverse back to the base, where Silverton's bus will shuttle you back to the lift.

At another point you may find yourself in Two Smokes and use a rope to slowly side slip down rocks and logs jammed into a choke in an avy path.  With the right group expect four to six of the best runs of your life.  Regardless of how much you hike at your home mountain, this mountain eats up your legs.  Back at the yurt at the end of the day you will find all sorts of characters who feel the same way.  Tired, thirsty and satisfied.  You realize the employee who laughed about 'herding cats' as he tried to get your group set up in the morning is having a beer and laughing with friends next to you.  Your guide may slap you on the back as he rolls up to take a seat with your group (did i mention you're all fast friends at this point?) and have a beer or five.  Our guide on this trip, Pedro, was getting in his beers and veggies together with PBRV8's.  After the day you've just had, you'd probably be willing to give your guide a lift to middle-of-nowhere Montana if they asked you, pay for the gas yourself, and thank them when you got there.

Silverton Mountain is a truly a different, exhilarating, intimidating and most importantly, unforgettable experience.  According to Skyler Holgate, one of Silverton Mountain's guides, who's a guy who can be found guiding/ shredding the gnar from Silverton to Bariloche to Alaska, the best thing about Silverton Mountain is that with tons of terrain available, and only about 80 people a day there is never a threat, or crazy powder rush like you get at any other ski area.  You can just chill and enjoy the day and shred fresh lines alllll day.  On a side note, check out the Bonnie Belle cabin (www.bonniebellecabin.com).  It is the only backcountry cabin in CO or in the lower 48 that offers private heli skiing/ shuttles into the cabin, located at 12,000 feet above sea level in Picayune Gulch, overlooking the Animas River headwaters and the historic ghost town of Animas Forks.  It's 15 miles outside of the town of Silverton, and is owned by Skyler, mentioned above.  You can ride some of the San Juan's sweetest mountains with the best guides in the business!

Just book it, then you have to go.

  • News: Mike Riddle, Maddie Bowm News: Mike Riddle, Maddie Bowman Crowned Champions At Copper

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

Copper Mountain, CO - The first stop of the 2013 The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS) concluded Sunday in chilly temperatures with variable light conditions at Copper Mountain, Colorado. Over $10,000 in prize money and swag was awarded to the top finishers including The North Face athletes Mike Riddle, of Whistler, BC, and Maddie Bowman, of South Lake Tahoe, CA, who both took first place.

On Saturday, 62 male and 23 female athletes from around the globe including the United States, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, Russia and more skied in a highly competitive qualifier day. The men were divided into three heats with the top four scores in each heat moving on to the finals as well as the next top four male scores. A total of 16 men advanced to Sunday’s final round. Twelve women also progressed to the finals, vying to win the first Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) U.S. event of the season.

Men’s champion Mike Riddle started off his winning run with a left-side double cork 1260 mute grab. He then executed a clean right-side 900 tail grab moving into a left-side 900 opposite Japan grab. An alley-oop flat spin 360 bow-and-arrow-grab led to his final trick, a switch left-side 900 mute grab. The run earned Riddle a high score of 90.

“The PPOS Finals at Copper Mountain went down amazingly well with athletes competing at a top level for any standard,” said PPOS Head Judge Steele Spence with AFP. “This open series format is so important for up-and-coming freeskiers to have the opportunity to compete alongside the pros. In addition, athletes at Copper were able to earn both FIS and AFP points.”

Rounding out the men’s podium in second place was Peter Crook of the British Virgin Islands scoring an 86.4. Finally, U.S. Freeskiing Rookie Team athlete Aaron Blunck out of Crested Butte, Colorado took the third place spot with a score of 84.6.

      U.S Freeskiing team member Maddie Bowman placed herself on top of the women’s podium with a run consisting of a straight-air tail grab, a left-side 900, a right-side 540, a left-side 540 mute grab, a right-side 720 and capped off her first place run with a smooth switch left-side 540 scoring a 85.8.

Anais Caradeaux of France took second place with an 81.4 followed by Angeli VanLaanen, former World Cup Superpipe Champion out of Salt Lake City, UT, who scored an 80.8.

A one-hour broadcast of The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series event at Copper Mountain will air on the CBS Sports Network Dec. 23, 2012 at 1pm EST and again on Dec. 25 (time TBD).

Salt Lake City, Utah — The first stop of the 2013 The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series  (PPOS) kicks off with an exciting halfpipe competition at Copper Mountain, Colo. on Dec. 8-9, 2012. The North Face PPOS allows top-level professionals and up-and-coming freeskiing athletes the opportunity to advance in the competition circuit at all four stops throughout the 2013 tour.

“The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series is very important for North American freeskiing athletes,” said Steele Spence, PPOS series head judge. “The series is a stepping stone for athletes hoping to progress to the top level of competition. The events are very well organized with a full panel of Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) certified judges and courses at world-class resorts.”

The first stop at Copper Mountain will be the first AFP sanctioned event in the United States for the 2013 competition season. In addition, the Copper Mountain event will be an International Ski Federation (FIS) sanctioned NORAM CUP event with athletes earning FIS points.

“FIS is excited to be able to integrate The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series events in Copper Mountain, CO and Northstar, CA into the 2012-13 FIS Freestyle NORAM NORAM CUP,” said Konrad X Rotermund, FIS Freestyle Continental Cup Coordinator-Americas. “These events will provide a great opportunity for athletes to get their needed FIS points to be part of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games qualification process and/or earn the opportunity to be the NORAM CUP Champion. Recognizing schedules are very full in North America, it is great to be able to cooperate with the already established PPOS events to give the athletes multiple avenues to meet their competitive goals in a single event.”

Halfpipe skiing will make its Olympic debut in 2014 at the Sochi, Russia Winter Games. The PPOS will work in conjunction with the AFP to ensure professional competition judging in accordance with AFP standards and criteria. Judging is based on overall impression, including content, difficulty of run, style and use of park or pipe.

“I am excited to be a part of the The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series at Copper Mountain,” said The North Face Athlete Mike Riddle. “The best athletes in the world are all converging at the resort this early season to get dialed in for the coming season. The event will see a very skilled field showing-off the tricks they have practiced all summer.”

The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series at Copper Mountain begins on Friday, Dec. 7 with athlete registration. The competition kicks off on Saturday, Dec. 8 with practice and qualifiers in the Main Vein Superpipe, and concludes on Sunday, Dec. 9 with finals. Coinciding with The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series, Copper Mountain’s celebrates its 40th Anniversary Dec. 7-9. Specials throughout the weekend include $40 lift tickets, $40 Woodward Intro Sessions, $40 Ski & Ride School Lessons, $40 rentals for two, and many more.

Mammoth Mountain, California – In preparation for the 2013 competition season, some of U.S. Freeskiing’s best slopestyle skiers are hitting Mammoth Mountain’s Unbound Terrain Park. Boasting the most open terrain in the country athletes like X Games gold medalist Tom Wallisch (Pittsburgh, PA) and AFP overall World Champion Gus Kenworthy (Telluride, CO) have been lapping the park perfecting their runs for the season. Newly back on skis from an injury last January, five time X Games medalist Sammy Carlson (Hood River, OR) and teammates have been utilizing Mammoth Mountain’s 55-foot tabletop jumps and rails to practice for the upcoming season.

"It feels so good to be on snow and getting my tricks back on point," Sammy Carlson said. "The weather at Mammoth has been awesome and I am stoked on being here; they always kill it with their terrain park. I’m really working on my run for Dew Tour, Grand Prix and X Games. It’s cool having Tom and my other teammates here to push me. I’m for sure having a fun time."

The U.S. Freeskiing Team heads to Breckenridge, CO on Dec. 12 for the first AFP platinum level event of the season, the Dew Tour.

  • News: Craig Kelly, Wayne Wong News: Craig Kelly, Wayne Wong And More To Join Ski And Snowboard Hall of Fame

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

Wayne WongWayne Wong showing off his signature "Wong Banger."

ISHPEMING, MI - Freestyle skiing pioneer Wayne Wong and world champion freestyle moguls skier Jeremy Bloom lead an outstanding class of six inductees elected to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. Joining them will be Alpine World Championship medalist Kirsten Clark, world champion and snowboarding pioneer Craig Kelly, acclaimed international ski instructor and leader Horst Abraham and ski resort developer Hans Geier. U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame Chairman Bernie Weichsel made the announcement.

Wayne Wong is regarded by many as a living legend. He was the leading and most popular skier of his day when hotdog or freestyle skiing was emerging on the scene. The inventor of the famous “Wong Banger” and a star of countless skiing movies, Wong packaged his fame into being a true ambassador for skiing and continues to this day to convey his passion and enjoyment for the benefit of ski sports across the country. Both SKI and Powder magazines have named him among the most influential skiers in the 20th century.

Jeremy Bloom was also a star of freestyle skiing who won two World Cup titles and a World Championship and was one of America’s most visible skiing stars in the mid-2000’s. In 2003 he won gold in the dual moguls event at the World Championships and a silver in the individual moguls. Two years later he won his third World Championship medal as well as earning the moguls and overall World Cup titles. His six straight wins in World Cup competition set a record that stood for seven years. Bloom was also a football star at the University of Colorado and played for two years for the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers.

Kirsten Clark started racing at the age of seven, developing her skiing skills at Maine’s Sugarloaf Mountain. During her 13 year career on the U.S. Ski Team she won 12 U.S. titles and reached the World Cup podium eight times. In 2003 she won a World Championship silver medal in the super G. From 1998 to 2002 she strung together five straight U.S. downhill titles. A three time Olympian, Clark was respected for her quiet leadership and the high standards she set preparing for competition. Lindsey Vonn said of her, “Clarkie was always someone I looked up to.”

Craig Kelly is the third snowboarding honoree to be elected to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. A winner of four world titles in the early days of the sport, Kelly was one of its most influential pioneers working with Jake Burton Carpenter to open countless ski areas to the sport in the 1980s. He also played a key role during the early years of Burton Snowboards. The holder of an honors degree in chemical engineering, he starred in numerous skiing and snowboarding films over 20 years. The first true professional snowboarder, he was awarded TransWorld Snowboarding’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. He died a year later in an avalanche while seeking to become the first fully certified Canadian Mountain Guide as a snowboarder.

Horst Abraham is an Austrian native who rewrote the script for American ski instruction that had a significant impact internationally. Through his work America’s ski instructors emerged as world leaders in their field. Starting with the Aspen Ski School and later the technical director for the Vail Ski School, he eventually became the education vice president for the Professional Ski Instructors of America. As the developer of what became known as the American Teaching Method in 1980, focusing on teaching skiing skills instead of skiing turns, he led the U.S. to become the world leader in snow sports education.

Hans Geier was a leading manager and developer of ski areas across the United States for nearly 30 years. From the time he completed Pennsylvania’s Ski Round Top in 1971 until his retirement in 1998, he had a large impact on the growth of the sport. Most notably he was the general manager of Steamboat Springs resort in Colorado from 1981 to 1990 when he led it through a $43 million expansion, growing annual skier visits from 360,000 to over a million and putting the resort’s finances in the black. In 1994 he was hired as president of Doppelmayr Corporation for North America, a position he held until his retirement in 1998. He also served on numerous ski association boards including the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) and chairman of Colorado Ski Country. In 1988 the NSAA presented to him its Lifetime Achievement Award.

The induction of the Class of 2012 will take place at the Marriott Vail Resort in Vail, CO on April 13, 2013 as the concluding event for Skiing Heritage Week celebrating Vail’s 50th anniversary.

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame provides highly respected perpetual national recognition to athletes competing in skiing and snowboarding and of the builders of these sports who have made the highest level of national and/or international achievement and contribution to American skiing and snowboarding. It is located in Ishpeming, MI, the birthplace of organized skiing in America, where it also serves as the headquarters for the International Skiing History Association.

      New Subaru Freeride Series Announced

4-star Freeride World Qualifiers provide Launch Pad to the Freeride World Tour

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - Salt Lake City, Utah-based Mountain Sports International (MSI) announced the schedule for the 2013 Subaru Freeride Series today. The new series features three 4-star Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ) ski events for men and women at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, CO (Feb. 7-10); Moonlight Basin Resort, MT (March 14-17); and the Subaru Freeride Nationals at Snowbird Ski Resort (April 11-14).  Two 2-star Freeride World Qualifier events will also be held as part of the series at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, CO (Feb. 6-7) and Snowbird Ski Resort (April 10-11).  The 2-star events provide an additional platform for athletes to earn Freeride World Qualifier points with the top men and women advancing to the corresponding day of 4-star competition. The full FWQ calendar will be released tomorrow with a full slate of worldwide events, including additional FWQ events in Canada and the United States.

“These premier 4-star events provide crucial opportunities for athletes hoping to qualify for the world tour,” said Event Director Bryan Barlow of Mountain Sports International. “We are excited to provide this opportunity on the country's leading big mountain venues.”

The Freeride World Qualifier point system (FWQ) has been developed as part of the newly unified Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face (FWT). All FWT events are designated as 5-star events. FWQs range from 1 to 4-stars and enable athletes to earn a corresponding ratio of points based on their performance at competitions. Accumulated points immediately affect an athlete's position on the FWT ranking system. The top ranked athletes will qualify to participate on the 2014 FWT.

The first ever FWT season will start with a roster of 36 prequalified male skiers, 14 male snowboarders, 14 female skiers and seven female snowboarders. Athlete qualification for the 2013 FWT has been designated by previous tour performance and rankings on the 2012 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour, The North Face Masters of Snowboarding and Swatch Freeride World Tours. In the future, the FWT roster will be created through the FWQ point system granting FWT positions to athletes with the highest points on the FWT and regional Freeride World Qualifying events such as the Subaru Freeride Series. The 2013 season of FWQ competition will climax at the Freeride Nationals at Snowbird Ski Resort in April, the final opportunity for FWQ athletes to launch to the FWT.

The Subaru Freeride Series is sponsored by Subaru, Sierra Nevada, Clif Bar, The North Face and Black Diamond

Registration for Subaru Freeride Series will open Dec. 4, 2012. Riders will be able to create a profile and sign-up for the Subaru Freeride Series events of their choice through the Freeride World Qualifier registration system. Twenty-one days prior to the 4-star day of competition and 45 days prior to the 2-star event, registration for the events will close. Riders will then be determined off of the seeding list on the day registration closes.

    • From: TetonGravityResearch

Athlete Registration Opens Thursday, November 8, 2012, 10 AM MST

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – As the first traces of snow dust North American mountain peaks, freeskiing athletes everywhere are revving up for another exciting winter competition season. Falling in line with the anticipation of a great winter, The North Face announced venues for The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS), including Copper Mountain, CO (Dec. 8-9); Whistler Blackcomb, BC (Jan. 14-17); Waterville Valley, NH (Feb. 23) and Northstar California Resort, CA (March 8-10).

“This year’s events are perfectly scheduled to provide prime advancement opportunities for athletes ready to take their freeskiing career to the next level,” said Barb Hamblett PPOS Event Director with Mountain Sports International, Inc. (MSI). “Spectators can expect to see exciting top level competition at all four PPOS stops this season.”

All four PPOS events are part of the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) competition schedule. The Copper Mountain and Northstar California Resort stops will both be International Ski Federation (FIS) sanctioned NORAM CUP events with athletes earning FIS points. Athlete registration for all four PPOS stops will open Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. MST.

“FIS is excited to be able to integrate The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series events in Copper Mountain, CO and Northstar, CA into the 2012-13 FIS Freestyle NORAM CUP,” said Konrad X Rotermund FIS Freestyle Continental Cup Coordinator-Americas.

Founded in 2010, The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS) features slopestyle and halfpipe skiing competitions with $55,000 in total prize value up for grabs. As one of the only open-format event series, amateurs have the opportunity to compete alongside top pros.

“The North Face is excited to bring yet another season of freeskiing competition opportunities to athletes, both professional and amateur, across North America,” said The North Face Director of Sports Marketing Katie Ramage. “The progression of the sport of freeskiing is important to us, and this competition format is another way for us to support that movement.”

Slopestyle skiing takes place in a venue comprised of man-made features such as rails, boxes and jumps contained on a single slope. Halfpipe skiing takes place in a halfpipe similar to those used for halfpipe snowboarding. Skiers accelerate through the pipe to gain increased height jumping out of the halfpipe while simultaneously executing challenging grabs, spins, flips and other maneuvers. Skiers string together a series of aerials from the halfpipe in a single run. Judging is based on overall impression, including content, difficulty of run, style and use of park or pipe. Both slopestyle and halfpipe skiing will make their Olympic debut in 2014 at the Sochi, Russia Winter Games. The PPOS will work in conjunction with the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) on competition judging with Steele Spence serving as head judge for the series.

“The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series is very important for North American freeskiing athletes,” said Steele Spence, PPOS series head judge. “The series is a stepping stone for athletes hoping to progress to the top level of competition. The events are very well organized with a full panel of AFP certified judges and courses at world-class resorts.”

      2012-13 PPOS Series Schedule

Copper Mountain, Colorado (FIS Event) - December 8-9, 2012

Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia - January 14-17,2013
