ISHPEMING, MI - Freestyle skiing pioneer Wayne Wong and world champion freestyle moguls skier Jeremy Bloom lead an outstanding class of six inductees elected to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. Joining them will be Alpine World Championship medalist Kirsten Clark, world champion and snowboarding pioneer Craig Kelly, acclaimed international ski instructor and leader Horst Abraham and ski resort developer Hans Geier. U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame Chairman Bernie Weichsel made the announcement.
Wayne Wong is regarded by many as a living legend. He was the leading and most popular skier of his day when hotdog or freestyle skiing was emerging on the scene. The inventor of the famous “Wong Banger” and a star of countless skiing movies, Wong packaged his fame into being a true ambassador for skiing and continues to this day to convey his passion and enjoyment for the benefit of ski sports across the country. Both SKI and Powder magazines have named him among the most influential skiers in the 20th century.
Jeremy Bloom was also a star of freestyle skiing who won two World Cup titles and a World Championship and was one of America’s most visible skiing stars in the mid-2000’s. In 2003 he won gold in the dual moguls event at the World Championships and a silver in the individual moguls. Two years later he won his third World Championship medal as well as earning the moguls and overall World Cup titles. His six straight wins in World Cup competition set a record that stood for seven years. Bloom was also a football star at the University of Colorado and played for two years for the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers.
Kirsten Clark started racing at the age of seven, developing her skiing skills at Maine’s Sugarloaf Mountain. During her 13 year career on the U.S. Ski Team she won 12 U.S. titles and reached the World Cup podium eight times. In 2003 she won a World Championship silver medal in the super G. From 1998 to 2002 she strung together five straight U.S. downhill titles. A three time Olympian, Clark was respected for her quiet leadership and the high standards she set preparing for competition. Lindsey Vonn said of her, “Clarkie was always someone I looked up to.”
Craig Kelly is the third snowboarding honoree to be elected to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. A winner of four world titles in the early days of the sport, Kelly was one of its most influential pioneers working with Jake Burton Carpenter to open countless ski areas to the sport in the 1980s. He also played a key role during the early years of Burton Snowboards. The holder of an honors degree in chemical engineering, he starred in numerous skiing and snowboarding films over 20 years. The first true professional snowboarder, he was awarded TransWorld Snowboarding’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. He died a year later in an avalanche while seeking to become the first fully certified Canadian Mountain Guide as a snowboarder.
Horst Abraham is an Austrian native who rewrote the script for American ski instruction that had a significant impact internationally. Through his work America’s ski instructors emerged as world leaders in their field. Starting with the Aspen Ski School and later the technical director for the Vail Ski School, he eventually became the education vice president for the Professional Ski Instructors of America. As the developer of what became known as the American Teaching Method in 1980, focusing on teaching skiing skills instead of skiing turns, he led the U.S. to become the world leader in snow sports education.
Hans Geier was a leading manager and developer of ski areas across the United States for nearly 30 years. From the time he completed Pennsylvania’s Ski Round Top in 1971 until his retirement in 1998, he had a large impact on the growth of the sport. Most notably he was the general manager of Steamboat Springs resort in Colorado from 1981 to 1990 when he led it through a $43 million expansion, growing annual skier visits from 360,000 to over a million and putting the resort’s finances in the black. In 1994 he was hired as president of Doppelmayr Corporation for North America, a position he held until his retirement in 1998. He also served on numerous ski association boards including the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) and chairman of Colorado Ski Country. In 1988 the NSAA presented to him its Lifetime Achievement Award.
The induction of the Class of 2012 will take place at the Marriott Vail Resort in Vail, CO on April 13, 2013 as the concluding event for Skiing Heritage Week celebrating Vail’s 50th anniversary.
The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame provides highly respected perpetual national recognition to athletes competing in skiing and snowboarding and of the builders of these sports who have made the highest level of national and/or international achievement and contribution to American skiing and snowboarding. It is located in Ishpeming, MI, the birthplace of organized skiing in America, where it also serves as the headquarters for the International Skiing History Association. - Blog post

News: Colorado Avalanche Victi News: Colorado Avalanche Victim's Family Sues Winter Park Resort
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Story by Kristen Lodge of the Vail Daily:
GRAND COUNTY, Colorado — The family of Christopher Norris, who died in January at Winter Park Resort after being caught in an avalanche in the Trestle Trees area, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Grand County District Court.
The complaint has been filed against Intrawest Winter Park Operations Corporation, which manages and operates Winter Park Resort.
The complaint alleges that Winter Park officials knew or should have known about the slopes within the boundaries of the Winter Park Resort that could have been prone to avalanches. The document also states that the resort knew about avalanche warnings that day and that they should have known the Trestle Trees area was likely to experience avalanches and therefore was not safe.
Winter Park Resort officials “had the duty to close those areas within its boundary which it knew or should have known posed an avalanche hazard to skiers under the conditions existing on January 22, 2012,” according to the complaint.
Intrawest officials in Denver referred inquiries to Winter Park Resort, which did not respond to three phone calls beginning May 18 seeking response to the lawsuit's allegations.
Salyndra E. Fleury is the surviving spouse and has hired attorney James Heckbert, of Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh and Jardine, P.C., who is working from Steamboat Springs.
“There were avalanche warnings in the backcountry, and they were telling people to go to the safety of ski areas where they control avalanches,” said Heckbert in a phone interview May 17.
“Ski areas are the experts. There is inherent risk as a part of skiing. You may hit a rock — that is part of skiing in a ski area, that is inherent risk. An avalanche is not part of the inherent risk in a ski resort,” he said.
The Trestle Trees were not roped off, and signs were not posted showing the area as closed, he said.
The next step in the process is for Winter Park to respond to the claim as part of the discovery process.
State law
The Colorado Ski Safety Act states that “no skier may make any claim against or recover from any ski area operator for injury resulting from any of the inherent dangers and risks of skiing.”
The Act also states the limit of liability attributable to non-economic loss or injury is $250,000.
According to The Colorado Avalanche Center, Norris' death was the second avalanche-related fatality of the Jan. 22 weekend. The Colorado Avalanche Center's website warned of high avalanche danger all weekend and cautioned, “Triggering avalanches is likely on any snow-covered slope 30 degrees or steeper that did not slide during the natural cycle yesterday. The natural
avalanche cycle has largely run its course, so I will drop the Avalanche Warning, but natural avalanches are still possible today. Triggering slides will be easy today, and some of them will be bigger than what we have seen so far this winter.” - Blog post

FOR SALE: Colorado’s Largest C FOR SALE: Colorado’s Largest Cat-Skiing Operation
- From: gregfitzsimmons
-
Description:
There’s a place in Southwest Colorado that promises no lift lines, if a storm rolls through you are 100% guaranteed fresh tracks all day, and there are endless options of terrain—old growth trees, high-alpine bowls, north-facing couloirs prime for mid-winter skiing and south-facing chutes that are perfect for harvesting spring-time corn. This place exists and it could be yours.
San Juan Ski Company, the Durango-based cat-skiing operation, has been accessing some of Colorado’s most mind-blowing backcountry skiing for more than 15 years. Nestled between the famous triumvirate in Southwest Colorado of Telluride, Silverton, and Wolf Creek, the skiing in Durango sometimes gets lost in the shadow of Telluride’s Palmyra Peak, Silverton’s untapped backcountry, and Wolf Creek’s annual snowfall. Don’t be fooled, though; San Juan Ski Company boasts goods that rival all three spots in the Southwest Colorado triangle.
The San Juan Range offers limitless fresh turns every season. The one-of-a-kind experience that guests get at San Juan Ski Company is one of the operation’s calling cards. After a safety briefing at the base of Durango Mountain Resort, guests and guides jump on DMR’s six-pack chairlift (the only time you’ll ride a lift all day). After sliding off the chair you’re greeted by 10 idling snowmobiles or a pimped-out 4x4 15-person van with mat tracks. While juicing the throttle of the sleds en route to the snowcat is a killer way to soak in the stunning vistas, the mat track-clad van signifies a powder day. Both options are pretty sweet compared to the normal cat-skiing experience where you step out of a gondola or slide off of a chairlift directly to the snowcat.
The enormity of San Juan Ski Company’s terrain really comes into focus after you spend 20 minutes sledding into the backcountry. 36,000 acres of skiable zones is a lot to digest because it’s the largest cat-skiing operation in the state. Their permitted snow-cat skiing and snowboarding terrain encompasses more acreage than all of Colorado ski resorts combined! The process of getting to the snowcat is cool on its own, but the real fun starts once you’re onboard the snowcat, sampling the San Juan snow, and teeing-up the terrain.
The morning commute includes a ride in the 4x4 van to the snowcat.Sounds cool, right? Now, let’s talk business. This operation is for sale, and for a measly $375,000 you can own it. Just imagine a private backcountry ski area larger than Aspen, Breckenridge, Crested Butte, Keystone, Steamboat, Telluride, Vail, and Winter Park combined.
Bob Rule, SJSC owner and lead guide, found his way to Durango in 1979 in search of soft snow. In 1997, Bob created the San Juan Ski Company to write off his powder-skiing addiction, and, since then, he has been involved with all aspects of the cat-skiing operation. But, after 15 years, Rule’s ready for something new and has decided to put his prized cat-skiing operation up for sale.
Guests preparing to descend untouched powder.“I’m ready for a change,” says Rule. “I’ve been in this area for almost 33 years and it is time to hang ’em up.”
Rule has been an invaluable part of the SJSC setup since its inception, both on the skiing and operational side. He’s been pioneering skiable zones, establishing zig-zagging routes between the old-growth trees that a snowcat can navigate, and serving as the face of the operation, albeit a bit reluctantly.
While Rule and his family are looking to move on, his staff is willing (and hoping) to stick around. And, their years of experience and local knowledge combine with an insane inventory of gear and equipment to make for a turnkey operation.
“There are a lot of characters that work here,” says Bob’s wife and co-owner Carrie Rule while laughing. “We consider them to be assets and they’re included in the sale of the CAT-skiing operation.”
One of the snowcat drivers feeling small amongst the San Juans.“There might be some snow-cat operations that have as much fun as us,” says guide Kevin Devine, who has been exploring the zones around Durango for 20 years and guiding for SJSC since day one. “But, I guarantee that there aren’t any [operations] that have more fun than we do.”
In addition to a motley mix of longtime locals with an intimate knowledge of the terrain and San Juan snowpack, the SJSC permit is included in the sale. Valid until 2020, the permit encompasses almost 36,000 acres of National Forest and has 750 “priority user days” on it. (Which means 750 guests per year are allowed to ski with SJSC).
San Juan Ski Company boasts some of the best terrain in Southwest Colorado. What else is included in the $375,000 price tag for San Juan Ski Company? Among other things, you’ll get:
•Permitted area is around 36,000 acres. Permit is issued through 2020. Permit is for snowcat skiing, sightseeing trips, and overnight trips.
•4 snowcats (2 passenger cats, 1 work cat, one winch cat).
•1 2009 4X4 15-person van with mat tracks.
•10 snowmobiles.
•24 plus BCA beacons, shovels and shovel packs.
•16 Motorola 2-way radios.
•1 Type II explosive magazine.
•1 Avalauncher
Part of the San Juan Ski Company fleet.“This job requires a unique skill set to thrive,” says Bob Rule. “The right person that takes over has to be mechanically inclined because every now and then you’ll have to fix shit, they have to be knowledgeable of snow safety, they have to be a skier, and they need to have people skills for guiding and communicating with the public. Plus, one of my big concerns is that you never want to make final decisions based on money. Quality and safety have to be the top priority with the person that takes this over. You can’t make final decisions based on P&Ls with this type of business.”
There’s no question that this would be a dream undertaking for most of us, and the beauty is that there’s solid potential to turn a profit. Fill the 750 priority user days on the permit, tap into Telluride demographic with—for the most part—a disposable income, and beckon the big mountain clientele headed to Silverton for a stop-over day of cat-skiing and it seems like you have a solid recipe for success.
The company's included winch cat. What’s next for Bob Rule after running SJSC for 15 years? “The plan is to move the family up to Montana,” says Rule. “I’m going to ski for fun, explore new and different mountain ranges, and travel to Canada and Idaho to see what’s up there. It’s time to move on to something else.”
Do you think you fit the bill and could own Colorado’s largest cat-skiing outfit? For more information about purchasing SJSC, CLICK HERE or email powder@sanjuanski.com. (Serious inquiries only, please.)
All of this could be yours.

A few winters back I took a bunch of mushrooms and decided to wander around the woods on snowshoes. I got so lost and had no idea where I was until I realized I was just walking around in circles in my neighbor's backyard. Kind of like Sonja Hinrichsen as she creates her Snow Drawing in the above video.

News: Shaun White Scores Perfe News: Shaun White Scores Perfect 100; Wins Fifth-Consecutive Gold In Superpipe
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Aspen, Colorado — The 108,000 people that witnessed Winter X Games Aspen 2012 saw some amazing feats over the four days. However those that stuck around for the final event Sunday night saw history in Snowboard SuperPipe.
Shaun White – one of the most decorated X Games athletes in history – scored a perfect score of 100.00 on his final run to capture his fifth-consecutive Snowboard SuperPipe gold. He is the first athlete to win five consecutive SuperPipe gold medals and is just the third athlete to win five consecutive in a discipline.
“It’s unreal, I have wanted that 100 forever,” White said trying to catch his breath from excitement.
Before his third run, White had already sealed the gold medal but he had more to prove. He wanted to land the back-to-back double McTwist 1260 after missing it on his second run.
“For me, it wasn’t complete until I landed that run,” White said. “I am glad I did. I have been to so many X Games now, and I will forever remember this. Getting that 100 score, the perfect score. It is crazy.”
Swiss rider Iouri Podladtchikov, or Ipod as he is known on the mountain, scored a 93.00 winning the silver. Ipod said that although he didn’t win, he was very happy with his performance.
“I am really happy actually because I have never put that run down so clean,” an exhausted Podladtchikov said following his last run. “I wish I had another run because I was just getting warmed up. It was my personal best run so far but it wasn’t enough today.“
Japan’s Ryo Aono took home the bronze with a top score of 86.00
“I had good coaching and I am so very happy,” Aono said.
The Snowboard SuperPipe event represents the progression of the sport and showcases the best pipe riders in the world. The SuperPipe course consists of a large halfpipe structure with vertical walls. The course is approximately 567-foot long and 66 feet wide, with 22-foot walls. SuperPipe is judged on amplitude, execution, difficulty, landings and use of the course.

Description:
Aspen, Colorado — The goal of any competitor in Winter X Games Aspen 2012 is to perform so well that you make it look easy. Kelly Clark accomplished that goal Friday Night at Buttermilk Mountain as her third run score of 93.66 was 10 points higher than her closest competitor winning her gold in Snowboard SuperPipe.
“I take it one run at a time and every contest is an opportunity to meet my goals,” Clark said. “I am really happy to come out on top and I am so happy to be here and happy with my riding, which is so important.
The winning run included a front side air, a back 540, front 1080, cab 720 and a front 540.
With the win, Clark became the first woman to win back-to-back gold medals in Women’s Snowboard SuperPipe, her ninth total Winter X Games medal. It was also her thirteenth consecutive SuperPipe win this season.
“It is incredible,” Clark said. “I had the best season of my life last year and I didn’t expect the streak to keep going. I think the things that I prioritized are really paying big dividends right now. I am really enjoying myself and learning new things.”
The silver and bronze medals went to two South Lake Tahoe, Calif. natives, Elena Hight and Hannah Teter, who celebrated her 25th birthday Friday night.
“It feels good,” the silver medalist Hight said. “I have had some ups and downs at X Games. It feels good to be a little more consistent and I am riding well and having fun. It has been a great contest.”
“It feels really good,” Teter said of her bronze medal. “I didn’t know what to expect going into tonight. I just wanted to have fun and stay safe and everyone to stay safe so it was successful. “

News: Olympic Snowboarding And News: Olympic Snowboarding And Freeskiing Teams Announced At Copper
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Copper Mountain, Colorado — With a host of new action sports events on the docket for the 2014 Olympics just two years away, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) formally announced 2011-12 U.S. Snowboarding and U.S. Freeskiing teams Friday from its training facility at the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix at Copper.
The announcement includes first year teams in slopestyle snowboarding and skiing, as well as halfpipe skiing – all the result of decisions by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) earlier this year to bring the events into the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The USSA named 21 athletes to U.S. Snowboarding halfpipe and slopestyle teams, and 17 to U.S. Freeskiing.
Halfpipe athletes have had outstanding training in Copper's early-opening 22-foot pipe and competed in the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix opener this past weekend at the Colorado resort.

As a part of the Copper announcement, the inaugural U.S. Snowboarding Slopestyle Snowboarding Pro Team was named. Olympic halfpipe bronze medalist and multi-event threat Scotty Lago (Seabrook, NH), along with Sprint U.S. Grand Prix and Euro X Games winner Chas Guldemond (Reno, NV), were among those selected. Holding the coaching reins for the 2012 slopestyle crew is former U.S. Snowboarding athlete Bill Enos, who comes to the team from Waterville Valley.
"With the inclusion of slopestyle snowboarding in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, naming this team is a natural step for us," said U.S. Snowboarding and U.S. Freeskiing Director Jeremy Forster. "We're supporting a great group of Olympic medal potential athletes and we look forward to working with this amazing group of riders as we head toward Sochi."
One of the most recent sports to be added to the winter Olympic lineup, slopestyle snowboarding features a stylized course featuring kickers, rails, boxes and other freestyle features that riders will incorporate into their runs.
"There have been so many huge developments in slopestyle snowboarding in the past year. The riders have been taking the sport to new levels, the IOC gave the nod to the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games, and now we are naming this group of super-talented riders to the first ever U.S. Snowboarding Slopestyle Pro Team," said U.S. Snowboarding and U.S. Freeskiing Halfpipe and Slopestyle Head Coach Mike Jankowski. "These athletes are paving the golden road for U.S. Snowboarding into the future."
According to Guldemond, being named to the team means more opportunities for him to take his riding to that next level. "It's something new for the organization. It's a really exciting change and shows the growth in snowboarding," said Guldemond. "The benefits U.S. Snowboarding can provide for me will help take my snowboarding to the next level, as well as the other riders. Having a national team will allow riders to progress that much more."
The team roster includes a group of athletes known for their slope abilities including Dew Tour slopestyle champion Sage Kotsenburg (Park City, UT), X Games silver medalist Eric Willett (Breckenridge, CO) and 14-year-old slopestyle phenom Ty Walker (Stowe, VT) on the women's side.
Longtime U.S. Snowboarding partner, Burton, has signed on to support the U.S. Snowboarding Slopestyle Pro Team by providing official uniforming for the Team's inaugural inclusion in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
The season kicks off for slopestyle snowboarding Dec. 15 when the Winter Dew Tour touches down in Breckenridge, CO. Key events in the season including the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix in Mammoth Mountain, CA, X Games, Dew Tour and the Feb. 10-19 TTR World Championships in Oslo, Norway.
Olympic Medalists Head Halfpipe Pro Team
Four Olympic medalists headline the U.S. Snowboarding Halfpipe Pro Team. In addition to his slopestyle team spot, Olympic halfpipe bronze medalist Lago heads a talented U.S. men’s halfpipe team joined by fellow 2010 Olympian Greg Bretz (Mammoth Mountain, CA). The U.S. women boast one of the strongest groups in snowboarding history with Olympic and X Games gold medalist Kelly Clark (Mt. Snow, VT), four-time X Games gold medalist and Olympic silver medalist Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, CO) and Olympic and X Games champion Hannah Teter leading the way. Clark was the dominant force in the sport last season, taking down all the major titles.
Joining them for her second year on the Pro Team is 2010 Euro X champ Kaitlyn Farrington (Sun Valley, ID), who picked up an opening win in the Copper Grand Prix a year ago as well as second in X Games, plus two-time Olympian Elena Hight. Matt Ladley (Steamboat Springs, CO) moves up from Rookie to Pro Team following his big win in the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix in Mammoth Mountain.
The Pro Team opens its season in the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix this weekend. In addition to the Grand Prix, the comp lineup for the season will be the Dew Tour, X Games, U.S. Open and other major international competitions.
"There's an amazing depth of talent on this team with six Olympic medals," said Jankowski. "We've had great early season training here at Copper and are anxious to get into the pipe for competition this weekend."
The vets are not the only snowboarders taking to the pipe as the Rookie Team was also announced led by Benji Farrow (Ludlow, VT) who was recently fifth in a FIS World Cup. Spencer Shaw (Stratton Mountain, VT), who took second at the 2011 Mammoth Grand Prix and Taylor Gold (Steamboat Springs, CO), second place in the 2011 Junior Worlds halfpipe, also highlight the team. The women's squad is led by 15-year old Maddy Schaffrick (Steamboat Springs, CO), who scored a 2009 Grand Prix podium at the age of 13 along with Serena Shaw (Stratton Mountain, VT).
Veteran Pro Team halfpipe coach Rick Bower, a former World Champion, will be joined by Olympian Tommy Czeschin this season. Spencer Tamblyn will return to coach the Rookie Team.
The U.S. Snowboarding Snowboardcross Team will be named next week at Telluride in advance of the USANA Snowboardcross Cup.

The USSA also confirmed the halfpipe and slopestyle skiing teams it nominated earlier this year as a result of the IOC decision.
Nine athletes were confirmed on the U.S. Freeskiing Halfpipe Pro Team including X Games champions Jen Hudak (Salt Lake City) and Simon Dumont (Bethel, ME). The IOC gave the green light to halfpipe skiing last April.
In slopestyle, 10 athletes were confirmed to the U.S. Freeskiing Slopestyle Pro Team. The inaugural team is headlined by AFP Slopestyle Tour Champion Bobby Brown (Denver, CO), World Championship gold medalist Alex Schlopy (Park City, UT), World Championship bronze medalist Keri Herman (Breckenridge, CO), X Games gold medalist Sammy Carlson (Hood River, OR), Dew Tour winner Tom Wallisch (Salt Lake City) and reigning U.S. halfpipe champ Devin Logan (West Dover, VT).
Slopestyle skiing was incorporated as an Olympic sport this past July. Athletes are judged on runs in which they perform tricks on a series of jumps, rails, boxes and other features of a manmade slopestyle course.

February 12, 2011
Ogden, Utah – It was a night of firsts during the men and women’s snowboard superpipe finals. Louie Vito, 22, was crowned Dew Cup champion for the first time in his career after placing seventh in the men’s final and still earning enough points throughout the season to be at the top of the point standings. Luke Mitrani, 20, won his first major competition at the Toyota Championship, throwing down a smooth and stylish run to land him at the top of the podium for the first time in a major competition. The only repeat offender of the afternoon was Kelly Clark, 27, who won the women’s snowboard superpipe final, crowning her the Dew Cup champion for the second time in her career.
In front of the largest pipe crowd at any Winter Dew Tour event, Luke Mitrani of Mammoth Lakes, Calif. threw out a double michal chuck, frontside 9, backside 5, front 10 and a cab double 10 to earn a staggeringly high score of 97.00, knocking his brother Jack Mitrani off of the podium. Greg Bretz, age 20 also of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., placed second with a 95.00 and 28-year-old Steve Fisher of Breckenridge, Colo. landed his first-ever double cork in competition, earning him a third place finish of 92.00.
“It was a great contest, the last stop of the Dew Tour, and the crowd was amazing. A really good energy,” said Mitrani. “I can’t believe I won. I’ve never won a contest this big so I’m really tripping.”
After earning back-to-back first place finishes at the first two stops of the Winter Dew Tour, Vito of Bellefontaine, Ohio was in prime position for the Dew Cup heading into the Toyota Championship. However, after taking a fall on his first run and scoring an uncharacteristic 73.50 on the second, Vito narrowly took home the Cup with a seventh place finish.
“I’m bummed I didn’t make the podium, and I wasn’t completely satisfied with my riding tonight,” said Vito. “The level of riding was sick though, and in the end I’m stoked I got the Dew Cup."
Clark of West Dover, Vt. won her second consecutive snowboard superpipe final, giving her enough points to win the coveted Dew Cup for the second time in her Winter Dew Tour career. Clark’s winning run included a front 7, cab 7, a huge frontside 1080, cab 3, front 5 and a back 5 to earn the top score of 95.75. Kaitlyn Farrington, age 21 of Sun Valley, Idaho placed second with a 91.00 and Japan’s Soko Yamaoka, 36, rounded out the podium in third with an 86.25.
“I’m really happy with my riding today and it’s even better to walk away with the win and the Dew Cup,” said Clark. “It’s been an amazing season and I didn’t think I could recover after Breckenridge when I finished in sixth place, but to come back and win the next two and walk away with the Cup is just incredible.”
The four-day competition is the third and final stop on the 2010-11 Winter Dew Tour season featuring men and women’s snowboarding and freeskiing disciplines. The Toyota Championship will conclude tomorrow with the snowboard and freeski slopestyle finals where the remaining Dew Cup Champions will be honored.

- From: media-75233

Description:
January 22, 2011
Killington, Vermont - Louie Vito (Sandy, UT) has done it again! Vito nailed his runs in the icy Vermont halfpipe Saturday to take his second Dew Tour win of the season in the three stop series. Joining him in the winner's circle was none other than Vermont native and all around halfpipe slayer Kelly Clark (Mt. Snow, VT) whose 95.75 score not only got her first, but gave her the honor of having the highest scored women's run in Dew Tour history.
The win marked the third overall this season for Vito, who also took first at the Visa U.S. Halfpipe Grand Prix in Colorado in December. He led the competition after the first run, but upped the ante in his second with back-to-back double corks, a frontside 10 and a frontside tailgrab, earning the top score of 93.00 on his victory lap.
"I feel great about landing a solid run out here. The halfpipe was good and everyone rode really well overall," Vito said. "I feel good heading into Snowbasin next month, and hopefully I can just stay on my feet."
The streak of three puts him in a good string of consistency as he looks ahead to the X Games as well as the final stop of the Dew Tour at Snowbasin, Utah in the beginning of February.
Colorado's JJ Thomas (Golden, CO) took second for the day, followed by Mason Aguirre (Duluth, MN) in third.
For Clark, the Killington Dew Tour stop marked her fourth win thus far in the season, including the Grand Prix in Colorado, the O'N'eill Evolution halfpipe comp, and the Burton European Open a week ago.
"Every day is a new day and it's hard to take the scale from one event to the next in a great sport like snowboarding," Clark said. "I'm really happy with the way I rode and I walked away with a win I can be happy with."
Clark knocked out a front 9, back 5, front 7, cab 7, front 5, to land herself atop the podium and the Dew Tour history books, and she was proud to be able to do it in Vermont.
"It's definitely a big win for me today. It's always fun to come home and do well in front of your friends and family," Clark said. "So many people from Vermont have been supporting me for so long that it's nice to come back and do well."
Next up on Clark's plate: X Games, and she says she's as ready as she can be.
"I'm trying to get as many competitions under my belt as I can," said Clark. "And walking away today, I think that's the most prepared for X Games that I can be."
Clark led the podium followed in second by Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, CO) and Queralt Castellet of Spain in third.
Bleiler, who had foregone competition this season to spend time progressing and enriching her riding, was happy to see that the focus of her time had paid off as she reached a personal goal.
"I've been working on my backside 9 and I was psyched to land them in both runs today," Bleiler said. "It was a big goal of mine today - not thinking about results and just trying to get that trick down. It feels good to have risen to the level that I wanted to today."
Aside from the achievement she felt in her riding, Bleiler said it was good to be back in a competition.
"You sort of forget that contests do bring out the best in you, even in those tough conditions, and you just have to do your thing. That's why contests are great, you can't second guess yourself. You just have to go with it," Bleiler said.
And Bleiler is undoubtedly ready to get back to her hometown as Winter X Games 2011 is right around the corner.
"The X Games is one of my favorite events of the season every season, especially for it being in Aspen, my hometown," Bleiler said.
Now, the riders move on to Aspen, CO for the X Games.

Breckenridge, Colorado – Olympians Louie Vito, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Spain’s Queralt Castellet won the men and women’s snowboard superpipe finals today at the Winter Dew Tour’s Nike 6.0 Open. The best snowboarders in the world battled it out on Breckenridge Ski Resort’s brand-new 22-foot superpipe, which debuted live on NBC.
Vito, age 22, won the first final of the season with tricks including a front double ten, cab double ten and a crippler, for a top score of 90.25. Steamboat Springs, Colo.-native, Matt Ladley, age 19, came in second with a 75.00 and Greg Bretz, age 19 of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., followed behind in third with a 73.75.
“I like contests, I like the pressure and I like having to do it right then and there. I feel pretty good after today, but it’s definitely a challenging position,” said Vito. “Killington’s a whole new day, a whole new contest, and I’m going to have to be on it if I want to stay on the podium.”
In the women’s snowboard superpipe final, 21-year-old Castellet took the top podium spot for the second consecutive year at the Winter Dew Tour’s season-opening event in Breckenridge. Castellet’s winning run included a back 3, front 9, back 3 grab, front 5, back 5 and a front 7 for a top score of 85.25. Elena Hight, age 21 of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., placed second with an 80.50 and defending Dew Cup Champion Kaitlyn Farrington, age 21 of Sun Valley, Idaho, rounded out the podium in third with a 74.25.
“I’m very excited because I couldn’t land the first run so for the second run I had a lot of nerves and a lot of pressure to land it,” said Castellet. “I did it, and I’m so happy.”
The four-day competition is the first of three stops on the 2010-11 Winter Dew Tour featuring men and women’s snowboarding and freeskiing disciplines. The Nike 6.0 Open will conclude tomorrow with the snowboard and freeski slopestyle finals for both men and women.

News: US Alpine Ski Team Annou News: US Alpine Ski Team Announced, Includes Lindsey Vonn, Bode Miller, Julia Mancuso and Ted Ligety
- From: media-75233

Description:
November 6, 2010
Vail, Colorado – Olympic gold medalists Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO), Bode Miller (Franconia, NH), Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) and Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) along with Olympic bronze medalist Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, NY) headline the 2011 U.S. Alpine Ski Team named Saturday in Vail. A huge crowd of over 1,000 packed the streets for the announcement in Vail Plaza which was webcast live on Universal Sports.
The first-of-its-kind public celebration continued Vail's storied commitment to skiing. The 2015 FIS Alpine World Championships will be held in Vail and Beaver Creek Feb. 3-15, 2015 - dates confirmed by the International Ski Federation meeting earlier in the day in Switzerland. It will be the third time the Vail Valley will host alpine's premier biennial event.
The 49 member Team also features World Cup winners Sarah Schleper (Vail, CO), Steven Nyman (Sundance, UT) and Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA) for a total of 22 Olympians.
"I'm excited about the group we've put together," said third-year men's Head Coach Sasha Rearick. "There is an incredible diversity of experience with guys like Bode, Ted, Steven and Marco. Then we have younger guys who are showing they have speed and are ready to take the next step."
"Starting with the camps this summer, things have been going really well," added women's Head Coach Alex Hoedlmoser. "Lindsey and Julia are strong and eager to continue their Olympic success, but the rest of this group knows they can step up. Our group dynamics are great, the coaching staff is highly professional and because of that, this team has the opportunity to do some great things this season."
The free public event, presented by Vail Resorts, drew a huge crowd of cheering fans in support of the U.S. stars wearing their new Spyder uniforms. Spyder has been providing innovative performance race suits and functional outerwear to the U.S. Ski Team for over 20 years.
U.S. Ski Team broadcast partner Universal Sports aired the celebration live on www.UniversalSports.com, where it is now available for on-demand streaming.
Here's a video of the team training at Vail earlier in the month:
Continuing Olympic Success
Vonn enters the 2011 season as one of the most decorated alpine skiers in American history. In addition to 2010 Olympic gold and bronze medals, her resume also boasts three consecutive World Cup overall and downhill titles, two straight World Cup super G crowns and a 2010 crystal globe for super combined. She currently holds the American record for World Cup victories with 33 and will be looking to defend her double World Championships gold medals in downhill and super G.
"I'm really excited that Vail and the U.S. Ski Team put together this amazing event to name the 2011 team," said Vonn. "It's a cool way for our fans, both here in Vail and watching the event live on Universal Sports to get to know all the athletes on the team. Vail always puts on a great show and I think this will add a lot of excitement for people to continue to cheer us throughout the season."
Miller returns for his 13th winter with the U.S. Ski Team following an inspired Olympics where he pushed his own limits to garner the full complement of hardware highlighted by a stunning gold in super combined. As the most decorated American male alpine skier, there are few marks for Miller to accomplish, yet for him, it's not about wins, it's about skiing with passion.
"It's about doing what I like to do best," said Miller. "It was never about the victories. Not at the beginning of my career and not now. I just love to ski, stay fit and encourage kids to get out and do the same."
Mancuso enters the 2011 season driven by a double silver medal haul in Vancouver, which boosted her to the most successful female Olympic alpine skier in U.S. history. It also recharged her for a solid preparation period fueled by motivation to return to her spot among the World Cup elite.
Stepping up
"There aren't any excuses," said Hoedlmoser, who enters his 14th season with the women's team. "Everyone did what they needed to do in the preparation period and we're all really motivated. I'm expecting quite a bit. It's time for some of these athletes to step up and make that breakthrough."
Fresh off his Olympic super G bronze medal, and successful shoulder surgery Weibrecht will be eager to open the speed season to hunt for his first World Cup podium, while Ligety is looking to add to his second World Cup giant slalom title and upgrade his GS bronze from the 2009 World Championships.
"The work that the athletes put in this prep period is unprecedented," added Rearick. "It's something I'm proud of, but I'm also proud of the work this coaching staff has done. We're excited to continue that execution as a team throughout the World Cup and World Championship year."
Major calendar events to watch this season are the Aspen Winternational set for Thanksgiving weekend in Aspen, CO featuring Vonn, Mancuso and the full complement of international stars. American men take to the slopes just down the road in Beaver Creek Dec. 3-5 for the annual Birds of Prey races, where Miller, Ligety and Nyman have been podium staples. Tune in to NBC, Versus and Universal Sports to see all the action.
The 2011 FIS Alpine World Championships are set for Feb. 8-20 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
