  • Announcing The Further and Dre Announcing The Further and Dream Factory Tour Winners

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

The dust has finally settled from the 2012 film tour, and the grand prize winners have been drawn. Both films this year provided a whole slew of amazing giveaways, and hopefully you walked away with something fresh from our sponsors.

      And the winners are…

Jeremy Jones’ Further, presented by O’Neill

Grand Prize: John from Bellingham, WA won the trip for two to ride at Squaw Valley. We connected with John just after his trip, and it sounds like it was a pretty epic adventure.  “The bluebird conditions, variety of terrain and size of Squaw Valley were incredible!  The mountain is so large that we were having trouble keeping track of which chair went where for the first two days!  We're already planning a return trip for next year and will be bringing our friends from our home mountain, Mt. Baker.  A big thanks from Belinda and I to Squaw Valley and TGR for making this amazing trip possible!”

Runner up: Karta from Boulder, CO is headed to Japan to shred powder courtesy of Cloudline Tours.  After seeing the Japan segments from Further, she couldn’t have been happier, and we can’t wait to see the pictures.

Second Place: Last but far from least, the head-to-toe O’Neill outerwear and a new board from Jones Snowboards goes to Jennifer in Boston, MA.

      The Dream Factory

Grand Prize: A heli-skiing trip for two courtesy of Alaska Heliskiing goes to Garrett from Colorado.  Pretty sure we heard his screams of excitement all the way up in Jackson Hole.  Garrett has yet to take the trip but we look forward to his report and some pictures.

Runner Up: Caroline from Kentucky scored the trip for two to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.  Unfortunately she is fresh off an ACL tear but Jackson Hole has been awesome in working with her to shift the prize to a summer filled with mountain biking and hiking rehab…Her dream of skiing Jackson’s legendary terrain is going to have to wait another year.

Second Place: Ben in Colorado is getting hooked up with head-to-toe outerwear from The North Face and a pair of skis from Atomic.

From all of us at Teton Gravity Research, THANK YOU for making the 2012 tour a memorable one.  The tours reached close to 300 cities combined across the globe, and without your amazing support every year, it simply would not be possible. Enjoy the rest of your season, and see you next fall!

NWT3K Introduces New Level of Customization to Outerwear

Northwest Technical Outerwear Allows for Individuality in Snow Sports Apparel

New company allows skiers and snowboarders to build & customize Jackets.

Seattle, WA December 18th, 2012 – Last week, Northwest Technical Outerwear (NWT3K) began a new era in the
winter outerwear market by introducing the first high-quality, affordable, and customizable jacket available to
      the public.

NWT3K recognizes that skiers and snowboarders love individuality almost as much as they hate seeing their
name brand jacket sitting mirrored next to them on the chairlift every season. NWT3K aims to shake up the
industry by utilizing new website technology that offers a simple interface for consumers to pick colors they
love and the features they need. Customization aligns with high-quality technical jacket features, designed
specifically to combat common problems riders face on the slopes. From wide cuffs that easily fit around your
gloves to durable, color schemed velcro, Northwest Technical Outwear caters to the distinct, die-hard snowbird.

Founder and CEO, Nick Marvik, strongly believes that you should be able to express your personality through
not only your riding style, but also your outerwear style. “Most companies release only a few jacket options
per season, so it’s inevitable that you’ll see some look-alikes on the mountain. Our brand means that you
are able to represent yourself through a jacket design that is timeless. With NWT3K, your gear will never be
      considered ‘last season’s jacket’.”

NWT3K is also a passionate advocate for keeping their products USA-made. The company has ensured that
production remain in its home city of Seattle, WA – without passing the cost on to customers. This supports
local businesses and allows for riders to receive their custom jacket directly from the factory, resulting in a
      much faster time to delivery.

NWT3K’s custom jacket builder allows riders to:

-Choose from 12 different colors for the body, arms, and hood areas of the jacket

-Choose from 10 different zipper colors

-Choose from 10 different velcro colors

-Choose from 16 different zipper layouts

-Add additional features such as pits zips

Custom Jackets start at $289. Visit www.NWT3k.com for more information.

      About Northwest Technical Outerwear

Northwest Technical Outerwear, LLC is a start-up outerwear company that streamlines their ski and snowboard
jackets around customer personalization, satisfaction, and experience. The company’s design allows snow
addicts to customize the colors and technical features featured on their jacket, while stile providing the durable,
high quality elements enthusiasts expect from big-name brands. As a new player in the snow sports apparel
industry, NWT3K hopes to shake up the standards for product technology, design, and innovation. Founded
and scaled by a full-time college student and ski junkie, NWT3K jacket features are developed with the avid
skier and practical functionality in mind. They are also advocates for “USA Made,” and have managed to keep all
production based directly out of their headquarters’ city of Seattle, Washington.

    • Description:
Rider: Austin Stromme Filmed By: Brian Gavin, Steve Stromme, Corey Nugent This season I decided to focus less on contests and more on filming. It has been my dream for a long time to be in a ski movie and this is the product of a season full of hard work and dedication. I wanted to do something different than the other edits, so you won't see any park footage in this one. I know the last couple of years a park skier has one so I figure you guys would welcome a change. I think the only thing that is holding me back is my location, I pretty much went as big as I could this season without dying on a flat landing. I really hope you guys like my edit and choose me to go film with you, I promise you won't regret it and I will only be better next year than I was this year!

  • Stevens Pass Mountain Resort F Stevens Pass Mountain Resort First In WA To Win National Environmental Award

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

      Stevens Pass Trail Map

In its 18 year history, the ski industry’s most prestigious award has never been won by a Washington resort.

Leavenworth, WA – The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) honored Stevens Pass Mountain Resort with the 2012 Golden Eagle Award for Environmental Excellence. Stevens Pass took top environmental honors in the mid-sized resort category (200,000 to 500,000 skier visits) for its energy conservation and greenhouse gas (GHG)reduction efforts. An Oregon resort won the award in 1994 and is the only other PNW winner.

“Our company-wide focus on sustainability includes many progressive programs, and we are especially pleased to receive this national acknowledgement,” said Ross Freeman, Environment & Sustainability Manager for Stevens Pass.

Energy conservation programs at Stevens Pass include simple measures such as upgraded lighting, occupancy sensors, timers, and improved operational protocols, as well as more complex projects such as a comprehensive third-party energy audit, building equipment retrofits, and solar power installations.

Greenhouse gas reduction efforts include extensive food waste compost programs, tracking of fuel consumption for all vehicles and snow machinery, no-idling policies, the purchase of cleaner engines (e.g. 4-stroke snowmobiles; low-emissions snowcats and front loaders), electric vehicles, and investment in employee transit. Last year the resort completed the installation of two public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, the nation’s first to be located in a mountain pass environment, and at the time the only units located at any ski resort.

Many other environmental projects are also underway, such as on-slope recycling, preferential purchasing of local food ingredients, and active surplus property/re-use procedures.

“We are always looking for ways to reduce our impacts, save money through efficiency, and do the right thing for the mountain environment for years to come,” said Freeman.

In addition to all its onsite GHG programs, for the past five years Stevens Pass has also chosen to offset a full 100 percent of its electricity and propane consumption through renewable energy credits and carbon offsets from non-polluting windpower. By making this investment to support clean energy for everyone, the resort has funded 21,289,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of windpower, and prevented the emission of 16,182 tons of CO2, or the equivalent of taking 2,878 cars off the road for a year.

Stevens Pass believes it has a responsibility to the environment and is one of the few resorts nationwide with full time environmental staff.

“We know that combating global warming is critical for the future of our entire industry, and we seek to lead resorts across the PNW by example,” said Freeman.

The NSAA’s Golden Eagle award comes on the heels of another notable award from the Washington State Recycling Association, which recently named Stevens Pass as Recycler of the Year – a category won last year by the Seattle Mariners baseball team.
Last December, Stevens Pass was thrilled to receive a national top ten ranking, and the highest score in the PNW, from the Ski Area Citizens’ Coalition annual Report Card, which uses public records and extensive surveys to rank the environmental practices of Western ski resorts.

    • Description:

      The North Face Masters logo

Salt Lake City, Utah - With winter taking slightly longer than expected to deliver its powder The North Face will postpone the first stop of its Masters of Snowboarding series, originally scheduled for Utah's Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort January 19-21, in order to provide more time for optimal competition riding conditions to develop.

The Masters of Snowboarding is the largest open, big mountain snowboarding competition in the country with three stops and an overall prize purse that tops $50,000. The tour will now kick off February 14-17 in Crystal Mountain, WA, followed by a stop on March 1-4, 2012 in Kirkwood, CA, and finish off with its championship event at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort to April 12-15, 2012.

"It's important for us to maintain the integrity of this event, and to do that we have to wait for more snow," said Bryan Barlow, Director of Competition. "Snowbird is a great partner of ours and we're happy to get to work with them later in the season when conditions are more favorable."

We all have dreams of meeting our childhood heroes, and Glen Plake was mine while growing up in Lake Tahoe.

Glen and his wife are on their "2011 Down Home Tour", and stopped off at Hyak for some powder turns.

TNT called me on a Friday night asking if I can document the event that next morning. After skiing 3 days that week, more powder seemed like a huge chore for my destroyed legs, but it was the chance of a lifetime to ski with such a legend and freeski pioneer as Glen and his wife.

Whistler Blackcomb POV by John Wells – Treed Up Jan 11, 2011 Whistler Blackcomb Pow day! A short trip up to Whistler from Bellingham, WA is always a safe bet for deep snow and limitless terrain. With over 30cm fresh and more like 50 cm’s in the trees Whistler Mt. had strong winds and light dry snow blanketing its many acres. With the Alpine still shut receiving 40-60 km winds the visibility and place to be was Whistler’s lower treed terrain. Riders: John Wells, Matt Beliveau, Will Hamburgler (Striped Jail suit), and Carl Wollschlager hit the tree stashes hard as the snow continued to dump giving Whistler some needed powder stoke. For a midweek Tuesday pow day the crowds were few and far between and the untracked lines were for the taking. Location: Whistler Mt. B.C. Thanks! WB for another super sick day riding the biggest, bad-est resort around! Stay tuned for more from interior B.C. as John heads to RMR and KHMR for the biggest storm in Kicking Horse History.

  • Blog: Windells Academy Flaunts Blog: Windells Academy Flaunts It In Canada

    • From: windellscamp
    • Description:

      flaunt1.jpg

Six ladies from Windells Academy packed up and made the trip to B.C Canada for the 4th stop of Billabong’s Flaunt It tour held at Mount Seymour. After traveling 7 hours with a packed van of boards, bags and pop tarts it was time to get in with the ladies of B.C and flaunt it.

      Words by WA student:Nicole McNulty.

The morning of the event we rallied up to Seymour from downtown Vancouver and made it just in time to meet everyone and register. After making our way to the course and discovering foggy conditions, the schedule was switched up. The rail jam was in the morning rather than the afternoon and the slopestyle event was held once the fog burned off.

       flaunt2.jpg

Following a thirty-minute practice, a forty-five minute jam session went off. Around twenty-five girls showed up for the contest and everyone was throwing down. The rail jam featured a flat down box and a down rail. To say the least, girls were getting loose. Switch front blunts same-way 270s out and gnarly switch ups were being thrown left and right. Our very own math teacher, Randa Shahin, threw a front blunt and a tail slide 270 out. Three of us from the Windells crew, including Randa had a blast and I couldn’t wait for the slopestyle event.

       flaunt3.jpg

After lunch the fog cleared and it was time for the girls to flaunt it for slopestyle. The course consisted of two jumps, both with a big and small side, and two rail features. Slopestyle was an hour and a half jam session, where competitors squeezed in as many runs as they could. Some standout tricks were being thrown, including switch back 5s, big back 3s and a few attempts at 7s. The competition atmosphere was rad and all of the girls were supportive of each other. Randa, Gina and myself were pumped on our performances. I ended up getting five solid runs in during the jam and I was beyond stoked! It was so sick to see a bunch of girls in one place throwing down.

flaunt4.jpgAfter the competition it was time for awards. There were a bunch of awesome prizes handed out for Hard Knock and Best Style awards. Because of my super tweaked back 3 japan and “sexy” method, I walked away with the Best Style award and a pair of sick Sony headphones! Gina and Randa grabbed some awesome swag too. All the girls were stoked on their performances and the product they received for placing. Randa and I were amongst the top 5 for slopestyle, Randa grabbing 5th and myself 4th.  Overall, the competition was great and all participants were awesome.

       flaunt5.jpg

My experiences at Flaunt It were especially sick because I got to see all of the girls who really “slay” at snowboarding come together in one spot to throw their best tricks. Flaunt It is an awesome showcase of the progression of girls’ snowboarding and I was excited to be a part of it. Events like this encourage girls of every level to compete, so congratulations to everyone who came out. Thank you to Billabong, Mount Seymour, Dakine and Snowboard Canada for putting on this event. Also, to Windells Academy and Blindside Colorado, thanks for your support! I can’t wait to see everyone at the final stop of Flaunt It at Sierra-Tahoe in April!
