      Antarctica

It's been two days since we've left Ushuaia. We still haven't reach the peninsula and I've spent most of my time lying in bed to avoid the sea sickness. I've puked a bunch of times.... but the sea seems to be getting better as we are approaching South Georgia Island. It’s quite unreal the atmosphere there is, crossing the famous Drake passage, (worse crossing in the world) surrounded by these massive waves. We've seen a few whales already, the crew is really excited despite the long journey. we stopped over at Trinity Island, which is loaded with peaks and first descents. We got out to strectch our legs, whcih was well needed.  Can't wait to see what's on the other side...!

Check out the previous entry from the trip.

The three-day event stars an ‘invite only’ selection of 50 of the world’s top snowboarders and skiers who will compete across three disciplines.

Riders will battle it out in “Big Mountain”, “Freeride” and “Downhill” divisions in terrain that is only accessible by helicopter in the Mount Aspiring National Park region of the Southern Alps.

Every competitor will be tested both physically and mentally in the challenge, which is unique to every other snow event in the world. The overall goal of the "World Heli Challenge Event" is to find the best all-round skier and snowboarder.

Quiksilver will be the official Mountain Wear sponsor, providing clothing, merchandising, media distribution and will also act as a strategic Partner.

To have a partner like Quiksilver on board is epic,” said World Heli Challenge director Tony Harrington. “Quiksilver is a company who shares the same passion and vision that we hold for the World Heli Challenge, it’s a perfect fit. Quiksilver’s history and credibility in the industry is legendary and it typifies adventure lifestyle sports and the social environment of the Challenge itself.”

Quiksilver’s Winter Sports Manager Jeff Sweeny adds, "This style of event fits perfectly with direction of both our image, our athletes and the way they're taking on the mountains, beyond the boundaries of the ski lifts and resorts. With the likes of Travis Rice spearheading our team - the back country is their terrain park. The World Heli Challenge is a perfect opportunity connecting Quiksilver's attitude to this progressive unique event".

Riders already confirmed represent a cross section of revered freestylers, extremists, ski racers and pure bred freeriders. A final event field will be selected in the coming weeks with a number of Quiksilver team members to be included in the selection.

Snowboarders already confirmed include Ralph Backstrom (USA), Matthew Annetts (USA), Susan Mol (USA), Paula Dewey (USA), Rachel “Ratty” Sheidow (Australia) Mitch Allen (Australia), Rob Kingwell (USA), Matthias Haunholde (Austria)

International skiers already confirmed include Jeff Annetts (USA), Erik Roner (USA), Chris Booth (Australia), JP Auclair (Canada), Andrea Berchtold (Australia), Sam Smoothy (New Zealand), Chris Davenport (USA), Ted Davenport (USA), Charlie Timmins (Australia), Boen Ferguson (Australia)

Explains Erik Roner, TGR ski athlete and renowned base jumper: "The World Heli Challenge is a rad concept, it allows the opportunity for an athlete to showcase all their abilities, whether they are a free-styler or big mountain rider, it encapsulates their all round skills and brings it all together in one event.”

  • ERIK RONER'S UNREAL ANTICS FEA ERIK RONER'S UNREAL ANTICS FEATURED ONLINE WITH ESPN!

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

      Park City , June 18, 2009

Erik Roner’s Unreal Antics Featured Online with ESPN…

Dynastar athlete, Erik Roner , has been busy these days!    Not only is he one of skiing’s premiere ski-BASE athletes and TGR film star, but he’s been busy making a name for himself in mainstream media as a cast member on MTV’s Nitro Circus.

Tim Mutrie, a writer with ESPN online, caught up with Erik recently.   Check out the link below to read about Erik’s off-hill antics with Nitro Circus, becoming a “celebrity”, as well as his heartfelt tribute to good friend, and skiing mentor, Shane McConkey.

Erik Roner is done with skiing. "Yes," says Roner. "At least til summer."

Roner was at home in Tahoe City last week, but on Sunday he was taking off again to climb aboard the crazy train that is Nitro Circus—the MTV hit show that's a sort of thinking man's Jackass—next stop Lake Powell, Utah (Season 2, Episode 3). So Roner is expecting to get into some XXL cliff jumping and, as usual, who knows what else.

"That's me cutting away from my parachute a hundred feet over water. I landed really badly, sprained both my MCLs. I was way too high to cut away..." —ER

A pro skier by avocation, the 31-year-old Roner is also a BASE jumper. And while skill and talent in these and other subsets are certainly helpful in Nitro Circus' version of Survivor, what is actually required is a well-rounded (if twisted) sense of humor and a Gumby-ian ability (if twisted) to bounce back. All this somehow makes Roner a natural fit for flipping dirtbikes (or scooters or big wheels) or launching himself out of a cannon or riding the ever-violent kite tube alongside Travis Pastrana & Crew as part of the most irregular antics that define the hard to define Nitro Circus.

So while wedged in the chamber of a 32-pound cannon and awaiting ignition, Roner, being the flexible, good-natured fellow that he is, availed himself for an interview:

      ESPN FREESKIING: Ski much?

ERIK RONER: "It was all right. As with most people, it was a weird, tricky season. And I was basically out of it for two months doing Nitro Circus stuff; that cut into skiing. But I had a Poland/Slovakia trip with TGR and then a Haines [AK] trip with TGR, and those were good productive trips. But I didn't have a full winter like normal."

  • Last Frontier Heliskiing: Oakl Last Frontier Heliskiing: Oakley and TGR session in Canada

    • From: ToddJones
    • Description:

We just wrapped up an epic trip to Last Frontier Heliskiing in northern British Columbia. The TGR Oakley team mission was incredible. I think the final thoughts on the trip were, 'Wow there is a lot of terrain here and it is insane. We need to get back asap.' We saw endless amounts of mountains and lines that will take years of work to shred. The province of British Columbia in general is big and raw. Flying home on a sunny day is jaw dropping. I sat next to Dana Flahr on the plane and he grabbed my digital camera countless times to shoot different lines. It seemed like we were on a location scout. Kye and Seth were on the other side of the plane. Seth was showing Kye lines he had ripped in Bella Coola while discovering new ones they wanted to go and bag.
The mountains are an amazing place. They teach us so much about life and its possibillities. To watch Tanner, Seth, Dana, and Kye session together is unreal. I only hope our cameras can touch, if only for a brief moment, the magnitude of what these guys do.
Huge thanks to the whole crew at Last Frontier Heliskiing; Angelica, Geoff, Michael Brackenhoffer, Mike Watling, George, Jean Yves, and all the staff at Bell 2 who quickly became our long lost friends from the North Country. We miss you all and can't wait to come back.

  • Jeremy Jones examines the beau Jeremy Jones examines the beauty of Spines

    • From: JeremyJones
    • Description:

      September 30th, 2009

      words and photos: Jeremy Jones

“We need men who can dream of things that never were” JFK

After seeing Noah Salasnik ride “Super Spines” in TB5 my view of the ideal snowboard run changed forever. Since that time I have searched all over the world looking for that perfect wall of Spines. The more I looked for spines the more I realized finding rideable ones was not easy.

Spines are usually hidden behind bigger peaks or surrounded by glacial ice. They are formed by a precise combination of wind currents and snow densities. They consistently get two to three times the amount of snow and seldom see light. I am obsessed with spines because they are so elusive and because they are so technically difficult to ride.

Getting a good view of what you are riding is hard. There is your standard blind roll-over at the top of the run and then every time you cross over a spine there is also a moment of blindness. They are so steep that riding them is like standing next to a wall and your whole body is touching the snow. Often times both arms are needed to hug the spines to help keep you from getting peeled off the wall. The spray from each turn instantly turns into small avalanches and there is no way to beat your sluff so you are forced to work around it and often ride through it. Meanwhile, gravity is doing all it can to pull you off the face and often times you cannot stop if you want to. One slip or misjudged sluff and you may find yourself cart wheeling down a face at 60 mph.

Surprisingly when it comes to high avalanche danger spines can be the safest features to ride. Because they are so steep the snow constantly sluffs off them making it hard for slabs to form. If a slab does release when you are riding them you can switch to the other side or to another spine. Having all that gravitational pull helps when riding them also. You can go from zero to sixty mph as if you were in a sports car and a small ollie can result in an fifty-foot drifter. Having all that speed at your mercy allows you push down hard on every turn and throw huge rooster tails.

Spine hunting is not limited to helicopters and Alaska. During the right winter any mountain can hold spines. The best part is they are often the last things to get hit because most people do not see them as rideable. Although finding a good spine takes extra time and effort, when you find one the ride makes it all worthwhile.

      The Brotherl Spine Wall

I named this the Brothel. It took me five years to unlock this thing because there was so many crevasses and seracs in the out run. There is only a 4 wide section that is clean but it is in the sluff runnel so if you do get caught in your sluff you will be fine.

      From Jeremy Jones Prespective

The view from the top of a Haines classic "Sexy Spines." This is a party run and odds are if you are reading this you could shred this line.

      These are Sexy

Some great spines from the bottom. My track is in the left corner..Seth Morrison gets busy on the right side.

      I beautiful Wall of Spines

This is another wall that took years for us to step up to the bigger lines. A couple turns into this beast I learned how to tackle spines and grind them with my arm pits.

Dr. Seus with Jeremy Jones Track

Dr Suess. I started in the upper left and worked my way right. I barely got this line clean and I am not sure I could pull it again. Check the filmers on the knob in the middle of the photo.

      Shackelton's Spines

Shackeltons.  This is one of the highest and biggest spines walls I have ever ridden.  The spines were waist deep

but the runnels were blue ice.  This made getting flushed off the spines not an option.

      The Prow

Tordrillos. The Prow. This one took an hour of shovelling to get off the ridge and over to it. It is one of the steeper ones I have made it down.

      A free Fall Wall

Another Free Fall Wall. I am 0 for 2 on this thing. I have pulled the top but have gotten pitched off the bottom spine.

      Touch and Go Spines

Touch and Go wall. Three hours of exposure. I clawed my way up this thing and clawed my way back down it.

      Dreamy Spines

Dream spines. My mom would enjoy these. So ripe and perfect we named them "Avocado"

    • Description:

Home from a 9 day stint in Washington. The first four days was the Baker Banked Slalom. I took fifth in Pro-Masters and came home with a Pendleton blanket. Temple Cummins won the Pro-Mens with a come from behind win on his final run to bring home his 4th gold duct tape. I led Devon Raney, a friend who has lost his eye sight, down the course as his eyes. He wanted to stand up the course but fell on the same bank during both of our runs. There is always next year for Devon and my eyes. I have to say thanks to the Cummins family for putting me up while I was there.

Temple and myself picked up Andy Hetzel in Seattle and headed up to Crystal Mt. We were there to judge the North Face Masters freeride series stop two. What a great riding mountain Crystal is. Forrest Burki a Crystal local came through and won the contest.

      News Release

      October 1st, 2009

From the Words of Jeremy Jones:

      jeremyjones.net

"As of today I am no longer working with Rossignol Snowboards.  It has been an amazing experience and I want to thank everyone at the company for supporting me the last 19 years.  You always gave me the freedom to do what I wanted with my snowboarding.  Off the hill I learned a ton about how to develop snowboards from the start all the way to the snowboard shop.  This has been my college education.

I want to give a special thanks to Francois Goulet, the North American President.  He was pivitol in helping me get Protect Our Winters of the ground and always supported my ideas.  It has been an amazing learning experience watching him lead the company.

I have so many great memories from my time with Rossignol and I wish them the best of luck in the future.  Hope to see you all in the mountains."

There will be more updates today as well as the release of the trailer for Jones' new snowboard collaberation with TGR

  • Deepest Opening Day in Mt. Bak Deepest Opening Day in Mt. Baker History!

    • From: johnwellsma
    • Description:

November 12, 2009 Mt. Baker opened up with a 67" base and over 7 feet of new snow in the past week.  This isn't the first time a storm has slammed the PNW and taken hippies and dogs alike by surprise.  3 years ago we had "Snow-vember" and everybody in the industry flocked to Baker to ski early season pow and get major film segments on lock down.  Living in Bellingham for the past 6 years has given me the oppurtunity to never miss out on these early season storm cycles.  Going from railing fireroads and single track on my bike to launching pillows and cliffs and skiing neck deep pow has never been a hard transition.  Year after year we wait, some years more, some less but it always comes in right on time.  When it starts snowing it's on, and if you aren't ready, or not here you don't get it.

In the spirit of Mt. Baker this past Opening day was "the best opening day ever!", quoted one local. Another, "best day in 20 years", "Biggest, deepest snowpack in the history of Mt. Baker."  And it is only November 12.  As we pulled into the parking lot at 7:00 AM the sun was rising over Mt. Shuksan and it was a bluebird pow day, the lifts were blanketed in 24" in the last 48.  Being really, really early never hurts, earning us first chair ahead of the crowds.

"We had to do a lot of scrambling, opening day with a mid-season snow-pack. We sort of got caught with our pants down."  This coming from Aaron Wilson pro patroller for the past 7 years.  "It is pretty unreal, it's never happened before."

From my end patrol had things dialed from proper rope lines to checking beacons at backcountry gates.  I have always appreciated the hard work Baker patrol does, without them we wouldn't be able to ski half of the terrain that we do on a daily basis.  Early morning control work, long days, and a commitement to being wet they always come through with powder grins as they "test slopes" and "ski cut" areas.

In classic opening day fashion I lost everyone I was riding with and spun laps on my favorite lines.  I hooked up with Eli Lee and Paul Kimbrough to put down the first lines on the "Beast" area.  As ski friends go, there doesnt have to be much in common, you don't even have to talk, actions speak the loudest.  Pounds, High fives, and hugs were given as we proceded to stop thinking, start living again and start skiing.  A good friend proclaimed at the end of the day "Happy Winter!" and I joined him in celebrating with a beer and a smile, it's back!

Tanner Hall Video Update on his recovery from a major crash in May 2009

      August 1st, 2009

      By: Todd Jones

Tanner Hall being filmed from th helicopter

Tanner Hall had a career threatening crash while filming with us at Stevens Pass in Washington last May. He overshot the landing on a test jump that took out Wiley Miller the day before. Tanner suffered two fractured tibia plateau's as well as two blown knees. Recent reports are that Tanner will not ski during the 2010 season and is focusing on the 2011 season. Knowing Tanner and how hard he works and trains, I would be incredibly surprised if he does not put skis on late next winter. The amount of work that he is going through just to get fixed up is mind blowing. Thankfully, Tanner and his boys are keeping the world up to date with the recovery through a series of video clips that track his progress.

  • News: Daron Rahlves’ Banzai Ra News: Daron Rahlves’ Banzai Race Tour 2011

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

“RAHLVES’ BANZAI TOUR 2011” COMBINES BIG MOUNTAIN, DOWNHILL AND SKI/BOARDER-CROSS DISCIPLINES FOR A THREE-RESORT TOUR OF TAHOE AND A RACE FOR $50,000 IN CASH

(Lake Tahoe, CA) – Daron Rahlves, four-time Olympian, World Champion and current Sugar Bowl Ski Ambassador, has announced plans for a new multi-resort race series this winter, with stops at Alpine Meadows, Kirkwood and Sugar Bowl.  Mixing disciplines of big mountain freeriding, downhill racing and ski & boarder cross strategy, the “Banzai” format, with roots stemming from the original Silver Belt Banzai at Sugar Bowl, puts four racers at a time blasting out of a ski-cross start gate feature, maneuvering through strategically-placed gates on an all-natural big-mountain course, navigating natural terrain features as well as fellow racers, with the limited rules to finish fast enough to place in the top two slots and advance to the next round.  A grass-roots flashback to the days of simply racing your friends to the bottom of the hill, Rahlves, the most decorated men’s downhiller in U.S. history, says that while the racing is real, the focus of the Banzai is on having fun.  “With so many competitions in skiing being of such a serious nature, the Banzai Tour invites skiers and riders to come out, get in the gate and point it, still maintaining a high level of racing of course, but also having a great time and enjoying the festive atmosphere that the Banzai is really all about.”  Open to anyone 18 years or older willing to race, historically the Silver Belt Banzai at Sugar Bowl has seen a mix of high-level athletes, racing enthusiasts and average-Joe and average-Jill’s just looking to come out for a good time on the mountain.  With reasonable entry fees of $100 that includes a lift ticket, and a $50,000 overall prize purse, the Rahlves Banzai Tour should see over 100 athletes racing at each tour stop.   And complemented nicely with vendor village exhibit areas, numerous spectator viewing spots, finish line BBQ’s and post-race parties complete with live music and dj’s, the event draws more than just competitors.

The three Tahoe mountains involved are perfect venues for a race of this style, offering big mountain terrain with impressive steeps, compelling routes to navigate and big snowfall totals every season.  Each race boasts a $10,000 purse, inviting Men and Women Ski and Snow Board divisions to compete, with an additional $10,000 given out to the overall Tour winners.  And while Rahlves will act as the Banzai tour ambassador, in a compelling twist to the overall series, Rahlves himself will not race in any of the three tour stops.  Rather, all three Men’s Skier division winners from each event will earn the right to race Rahlves in a final day, one-shot, winner-take-all, $10,000 mad-dash “Banzai Super Final”, sure to be a crowd pleaser.

      Rahlves Bonzai Tour

Dates for the 2011 Rahlves’ Banzai Tour are:

Alpine Meadows January 22nd and 23rd

Kirkwood Mountain Resort February 5th and 6th

Sugar Bowl Resort March 12th and 13th

Registration is just $100 and includes a lift ticket for Saturday’s time trials, as well as Sunday’s Banzai format racing, should the racer advance out of Saturday’s round.  Skiers, snowboarders, men and women 18 years and older are welcome to register at www.rahlvesbanzai.com.

In addition to the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour headlining sponsor Spyder, other Banzai backers include Red Bull, Bud Light, Contour HD, Giro, Sierra Avalanche Center, Atomic, Suunto, Snowbomb, Backcountry Access, 101.5FM, TahoeTV, Powder Magazine, Wend Snow Wax, Zinka SPF, and Crux Events.

For more information on the Rahlves Banzai Tour visit www.rahlvesbanzai.com.  For more information on the three host resorts, visit www.skialpine.comwww.kirkwood.com, and www.sugarbowl.com.
