      Dew Tour Men's Slope Style
The Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships at Breckenridge, Colorado wrapped up the final day with three slopestyle events, and the Men’s Freeski Slopestyle Final was without a doubt a highlight to the day as they skied with strength through what many athletes had referred to as, “the best course ever.”

Following the 31-man final from yesterday, only the top twelve were allowed to return to throw it all on the line for their chance at taking the 2012 Dew Cup.

As the top twelve skiers began to take their turns on the slopestyle course, the snow began to flurry making for a true winter competition allowing some riders to flourish while others had to make adjustments in order to excel.

With James Woods, aka Woodsy, coming into the event as the top qualifier from semis, he was looked to be a favorite to do well. However, between the conditions and the stacked competition, this event was anything but predictable.

As it came down to Woodsy’s final run, he seemed to have his entire run as he wished, but as he approached the final jump he decided to ride to the side and let this event go to the Aussie Russ Henshaw who scored a whopping 84.50 on his first run.

Topping the podium was Henshaw, and directly behind him in scores were Andreas Hatveit and Henrik Harlaut taking second and third, respectively.

Mammoth Mountain, California - Tom Wallisch (Pittsburgh, PA) won the VISA U.S. Grand Prix, FIS World Cup and platinum AFP slopestyle event with a 96.40 and in his signature style he stomped all of his tricks and executed them with confidence. His consistent  podium placement has elevated him to be the winningest male slopestyle skier in history. Kaya Turski, of Canadan took first in women's slopestyle with her big air and solid landings.

"I couldn't have asked for a better day today," Tom Wallisch said. "The course was smooth and the snow was soft, not to mention the park was sweet. It was an awesome event and I am so happy that the U.S. Grand Prix is here to help us show the world what our sport is about, it sets a good precedence for the next events that we do leading up to Sochi in 2014. I can't wait!"

It was Wallisch's 5th podium of this season and 4th first place. Devon Logan (West Dover, VT) took second in women's slopestyle. Logan notched her fourth-straight podium of this season.

Canada's Kaya Turski won for the women with her fourth-straight first finish, Emilia Wint (Breckenridge, CO) landed in third.
For the men Canada's Alex Bellemare took second and Joss Christiansen (Park City, UT) third.

"My season so far has been great and I am extremely excited with how everything is going," Kaya Turski said. "I'm just trying to keep it clean and solid and work on some new tricks and Devin and Anna, a lot of girls really, are stepping it up, it's really cool to come out on top. It makes me proud! The course at the Visa U.S. Grand Prix was really nice, I am proud to have Mammoth as my home mountain and it's great that I can be here to represent."

  • News: Nick Goepper Wins Freesk News: Nick Goepper Wins Freeski Slope Finals, Tom Wallisch, Kaya Turski Win Dew Cup

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

Snowbasin, Utah — Nick Goepper won the men's freeski slope Finals at Sunday's Winter Dew Tour Toyota Championships with his score of 95.00 and he was also voted the Mitch Breakthrough Athlete of the Year.

In his winning run, he stepped things up and did a switch double 14 instead of the switch double 12 he did in his first run.

His run started with a 450 on 270 out on top rail, front swap backside 450 out on A-Frame, on the cannon box he did a switch 2 on rodeo 450 out. For the jumps, he started with a switch left double 10 Japan and finished with a switch right double 14 mute.

"I’ve been so close all year, but to finally get the number one spot feels awesome," Goepper said.

Tom Wallisch took home the Dew Cup and also won Toyota Athlete of the Year with his second-place finish and score of 92.25. He was ranked first overall with wins at each of the previous two Dew Tour stops, and he was the last to drop in to the finals with the only shot of bumping Goepper off the podium. Wallisch has come back in his second run to take the win at each of those events. But today in Utah, he was able to increase his score by one point, but it wasn't enough to overtake the 17-year-old Goepper.

"I’m not much of a go for broke, last run huck yourself, try something new kind of guy," Wallisch said. "I’d rather see skiing be smoother. Just full, complete, good runs. I never really try to huck myself second run. I just go for cleaning it up. Making it as smooth as possible. And it’s worked for me in the past, so I’m going to keep doing it."

His run went like this: switch lip 2 pretzel 2 on the down rail, to switch on frontside switchup backside 450 out, to switch on to cannon rail backside pretzel 450 out to switch. He hit up the jumps with a switch left double cork 1080 Japan to switch right double cork 1080 Japan.

Defending Dew Cup champ Bobby Brown finished third with 91.00 after his second run that started with a switch 2 to pretzel 2 on first rail, switch on to switchup inward 2 out on second, cork 630 on cannon then right double 12 to switch double 14 on the last two jumps.

"I was struggling on the course the last few days," Brown said. "I’m just stoked that I’m on the podium, and Goepper and Wallisch killed it today. I’m just happy to end the Dew Tour on the podium."

Kaya Turski Dew Tour SnowbasinKaya Turski.

Kaya Turski won the women's freeski slope title with her score of 93.75, increasing her lead by one point in her second run at the Toyota Championships on Sunday, and she also took home the Dew Cup. This was the first year for a Dew Cup in women's freeski pipe.

Turski is on a hot streak after winning the X Games and the last stop of the Dew Tour. It's not suprising, with a winning run that consisted of switch 2 onto the flat box, gap blind swap on the flat down, blind swap on the A-Frame rail, into a blunt 450 off the cannon. For the jumps, she started wtih a switch 720 high mute into a switch 5 Japan.

“I’m training really hard," Turski said. "The opportunity of us being in the Olympics is really huge for me. I’m very excited to go and represent Canada in 2014.”

Second place went to Australian Anna Segal, who scored a 90.75 on her final run and pulled of her first cork 9 without ever attemping one.

Her run went like this: transfer from down rail into down box, back switchup on the up down rail, back 270 out grab on up cannon, right 7 safety on first jump and left cork 9 mute on second.

"I'm really excited to be up on the podium with Devin and Kaya," Segal said. "Those girls are so progressive and so solid. At X Games, Devin beat me, so it was kind of cool to one-up her on this one. Especially since she already won the pipe. She's had her fun."

Devin Logan - who won the Dew Cup and the competition for women's freeski pipe yesterday evening - podiumed again today with a third-place-finish after her first-run-score of 89.00.

"Devin really gave it her all, she’s keeping me on my toes," Turski said. "All the girls are really skiing well these days. The level is definitely being pushed. So it’s really exciting being up there and dropping in, you really have to bring your A Game, and that’s what I did."

Devin's started her higher scoring run with a switch on to up gap down box, to blind 270 out of the up down rail, to 180 safety grab out of the cannon. She hit up the jumps with a switch 5 mute on the first into a cork 7 tailgrab on the last.

She was also in contention for the Cup in slope, but after such a solid season, she had no regrets.

"I was just so happy with yesterday, I just wanted to come in today and have fun and that’s what I did," Logan said. "Just getting another podium is awesome in my eyes. I’m not upset that I got third at all, I’m actually really happy with how I skied."

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

Killington, Vermont - There was no room for error among the field of 14 freeskiers if the guys had any chance of cracking into the top three at Sunday's Pantech Invitational freeski slope Finals. It seemed like the win was in the bag for Bobby Brown, after he scored a 93.00 in his first run with his signature style; smooth and solid on the rail sections and huge and blasting over the three jumps. He stomped his landings and his score held on straight through until the last guy to drop in for second runs.

If the last to drop had been anyone other than Tom Wallisch, there may have been no contest. But Wallish was coming off a win at last month’s Dew Tour in Breckenridge, where he came back in his second run to take the title. In true Wallisch style, he did it again here in Killington. Not only did he bump Brown into second, he did it by scoring the highest ever in Winter Dew Tour freeski history with a 95.25.

      Tom Wallisch Dew Tour Killington
Tom Wallisch competes in the Dew Tour on Sunday at Killington.

"I was just trying to convince myself that I’m a second-run skier," Wallisch said. "So far every major contest win I’ve had has been second run. Even Euro X Games two season’s ago, we had three runs, but my brain just likes to do a good second run. So I was just trying to convince myself that was how it was going to go, get a good mindset, just picture myself at the bottom and just let my body do the work."

His run started with a switch lip blind 2 on the top down rail, into a right foot forward front up blind 4 on the flat down, into a switch lip front 4 on the cannon rail. He hit the jumps with a left double cork 1260 mute to switch left double cork 1080 japan, to switch right double cork 1080 japan.

It had to be a letdown for Brown, who wasn’t able to increase his initial lead on his second run after falling on the last hit, but he didn’t let it show.

“I’m just stoked on how I did, obviously Tom just threw an amazing run and I’m stoked for him,” Brown said. “Now I’m just looking forward to X Games next week.”

Seventeen-year-old Nick Goepper knocked Sammy Carlson off the podium into fourth after he finished his final run, so the competition was heated straight through to the last minute.

Wallisch is now in the overall lead heading in to next month’s finals in Snowbasin, where Brown will be fighting back as the defending Dew Cup champ.

In the women's field, Devin Logan conquered the rail sections and jumps to nearly take the win at Sunday's Pantech Invitational slopestyle Final, until Kaya Turski fought back in her last run to win it with 92.25.

"I have my whole family and friends here with mu just trying to keep me calm," Turski said. "I tried not to think about the first run, tried to keep it together. It was a new run, so I was all in."

      Kaya Turski Dew Tour Killington
      Kaya Turski going huge.

Turski's run went like this: Front switchup on the down bar, into a switch gap to the downbox, into a 180 on the cannon to switch 3 off. On the jumps, she startede with a switch 5, into a 5, to finish with switch 7.

Many among the field of 6 freeskiers struggled to put down clean runs, with the massive jumps offering no mercy. But the girls rose to the occasion and Logan's score of 90.50 held on until Turski came through as the last girl to drop.

"I came a little short (on last jump) and I knew next run I had to just go in a little faster," Turski said. "I went at it straight and tucked as much as I could and hoped for the best. The wind was a little tricky today, but I made it through."

  • News: Team Armada Wins The Bat News: Team Armada Wins The Battle Of The Brands In Denver

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

      January 25, 2010

Denver, Colorado – Giant snowflakes weren't the only things descending from the sky in downtown Denver Tuesday night as team Armada's Spencer Milbocker (Otsego, MI), Alex Bellemare (Westford, MA) and Ben Moxham (Boise, ID) topped the world's best freeskiing athletes at the the Nature Valley Big Air Challenge Battle of the Brands. A crowd of around 10,000 packed Denver's Civic Park to watch the skiers launch off the 106-foot high scaffold in the opening night event of the Denver Big Air presented by Sprint.

"This was probably the most fun event ever. You can't even imagine how happy I am. The crowd, the energy- it was great," Milbocker said.

The night's competition pitted 14 teams of three seeded into brackets of two against one another for a last man standing, winner-takes-all night event in the heart of Denver- the first time the city has ever seen a winter sport transplanted into the middle of town.

Interested crowds gathered around the big air jump throughout the day as teams prepared for the ultimate big air battle. As the jumps got bigger, the crowd got louder. National music act, Switchfoot, rocked the scene and set the stage playing a concert right before finals.

In the end, it all came down to team Line, which was comprised of Joss Christensen (Park City, UT), LJ Strenio (Salt Lake City) and Mitch Gillman (Whitefish, MT). Gilman took a hard spill in round one, leaving his team of two to fend for itself in the best of two jumps judging. But, thanks in large part to Stenio's string of three incredible double corked jumps, Line found itself in a final up against Armada.

Milbocker took the first run, landing a solid jump for Armada, but Line's Christensen answered back with an aired out switch double rodeo 10 with a Japan grab. Bellemare upped the ante with a double 12 tailgrab – a trick he had only been able to land once before.

"I had just landed my trick for the first time today [in finals]. I knew I could have had it. I just hoped for the best and sent it," Bellemare said. "Go big or go home!"

Strenio had one shot to push Line past Armada, and appeared to do so for a moment with a technical switch double rodeo 1080. It all came down to Moxham, who was a late addition to the Armada team, and the kid knocked it out of the park with his double 1080 mute grab.

"Being the last one on my team to jump made me just think, 'I have to land it,'" Moxham said. "I saw everyone else land their tricks. I needed to step it up and land. I came through and it worked out. I'm stoked."

Adding to the night was the award for "Best Trick of The Night," which went to Colorado's own John Spriggs (Vail, CO) whose double cork 1260 mute grab was incredible.

"I took it pretty deep. I think what impressed the judges the most was the amplitude," Spriggs said, adding his compliments to the Big Air event as a whole. "This jump was sick. I've hit London, Barcelona, San Francisco and this is the best big air jump."

The action in Colorado continues Wednesday with the LG FIS Snowboard World Cup at the Denver Big Air presented by Sprint. To catch the high-flying action on TV, tune in to NBC Jan. 30 at 1:30 p.m. EST or catch it on Versus Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. EST.
