Kenai Heli Launches This Seaso Kenai Heli Launches This Season

Description:
Kenai Heli Ski's base in Seldovia, Alaska.
If you’re planning a helicopter ski trip to Alaska this winter, you’ve got plenty of options. Haines, Cordova, Valdez, Girdwood, and … Seldovia? If Seldovia doesn’t ring a bell, that’s because there’s never been a reason for skiers to know about it, until now. This winter, however, this quiet fishing village will be the home of Alaska’s newest heli operation, Kenai Heli Ski.
The Kenai Peninsula begins at the end of the Turnagin Arm, just past the town of Girdwood and Alyeska ski resort, about an hour drive from the state capitol of Anchorage. Other than a couple roads connecting to the coastal towns of Seward and Homer, and some easy access backcountry skiing off Turnagin Pass, the Kenai Peninsula is mostly a remote and rugged wilderness where the mountains meet the sea. Located on the southwestern end of the peninsula, the small town of Seldovia sits on the ocean in the heart of the Kenai Mountains.
Similar to the home of Points North Heli in Cordova, the only way to access Seldovia is by plane or Alaska Marine Highway ferry. In order to get their guests to this remote location, Kenai Heli plans to fly them, via private charter, directly from the Anchorage airport to Seldovia. In the off chance that weather doesn’t permit air travel, guests will be driven to the town of Homer and brought to Seldovia by ferry.
Unlike parts of the Chugach, where numerous heli operations are flying into the same zone, there are no other companies competing for tracks in the area. The next closest heli operation is over a hundred miles away in the town of Girdwood. Due to the area’s relatively difficult access, the mountains in the Kenai Heli fly-zone have seen little traffic in the past.
“There has been some touring and sledding,” said Kenai Heli’s owner, Njord Rota, “but a majority of our over 300,000 acres remains unskied.”
Exploration of their massive permit area will take place during their inaugural season, and guests flying with Kenai Heli will take part in it.
“Since most of the peaks have yet to get hit, there will be quite a few first descents getting logged,” Rota said.
You could shred here this season.
Kenai Heli is the only operation in Alaska offering guaranteed vertical, 100,000 feet in a week with unlimited vertical after that. Anyone who’s skied in Alaska knows that it’s a roll of the dice: it could be the best week of your life, you could get shut down completely, or something in between. Up in AK, mother nature is calling the shots, but Kenai Heli hopes to have an ace in the hole.
“We’ve got two snowcats and lots of terrain with great tree skiing right outside our base of operations,” Rota said. “When conditions keep the aircraft grounded, we fire up the snowcats and go tree skiing. We think so highly of our tree skiing terrain that we’ve got one of the best refund policies in the industry.”
Kenai Heli’s all-inclusive weeks run $8,495, comparable to similar operations. So, if you’re planning to head to AK this winter, you’ve got plenty of options, and Kenai Heli is certainly worth a look.

Video: Surfing In Alaska With Video: Surfing In Alaska With Ian Walsh — Brothers On The Run Episode 4
- From: adambroderick
-
Description:
In the fourth episode of Brothers on the Run, Eric and John Jackson jump ahead a few steps on their itinerary for their trip from Alaska to South America. Why wait for the warm weather down south when you can ride a bone-chilling river-mouth break in Alaska? John may have felt a bit more nipped since he's currently recovering from bone-fractures (Gnarly air to unintentional rock-bonk in Episode 1). Although out of their element, with pointers from pro surfer Ian Walsh, the brosephs manage to do quite alright - excellent example at 5min, 10 sec. After all, Ian owed them one since they recently gave him the ride of his life on a big AK powder spine in episode 2.
Luckily they had 2-3 foot waves to practice on before a solid day of overhead sets rolled in. Everyone looks identical in a full-suit, hood and booties - to spot Ian, look for the only one throwing 360s. Travis Rice also jumped on-board and brought along some classic commentary: "End of the road, my ass. We can take a boat!"
Want to see John Jackson in a bathrobe? Spectators at Alyeska Resort's Pond Skim probably didn't either. Fortunately for your sake, that's how this episode ends.
New 'Brothers on the Run' episodes release every other tuesday. Don't lose track of the Johnsons' shred reports during their epic road trip from Alaska to Chile.

Urban Assault On Alaska For Th Urban Assault On Alaska For The Dream Factory
- From: PeteObrien

Description:
It's no secret that Alaska has been getting hammered by snow this Winter. Since December, Anchorage has been the site of multiple urban film and photo shoots.
TGR has visited AK on many film trips over the years to document big mountain riding. This year the team went on the search to see what the urban scene is like in AK.

Tim Durtschi grew up skiing at Alyeska. He tried this rail for the first time when he was 15 years old. With all of the urban crews migrating to Alaska to film this year, the cops have figured out most of the spots and getting busted is a regular occurrence. We didn't get shut down here by cops but we did get shut down by a train conductor.

Alpenglow All Day - Sage, Dyla Alpenglow All Day - Sage, Dylan, Dash and Durtschi Hit Alaska
- From: PeteObrien
-
Description:
Last week, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Dylan Hood, Dash Longe and Tim Durtschi left the lower 48 to hit some of the powder in Alaska that has been making national headlines. The boys rolled into Girdwood on what Alyeska locals were calling "the best day of the season." For most of us, it was our first real powder day of the year and after about six tram laps, our legs were Jell-o and everyone had huge grins on their faces.
Since then, Girdwood has seen six-strait days of high pressure and cold temps, which has kept the snow soft. We're slotted for two more days of sun before another storm rolls in this weekend. It looks like the western U.S. is finally getting the snow they desperately needed, as well.
Winter has arrived and it's great to know you can wake up, put the boots on, and get after it.
Below are some photos from the past few days.

Dylan, gap over some trees.
Tim Durtschi grew up skiing at Alyeska and has been guiding us around to all of his secret stashes.
The Boys scoping the gnar ... from the bar.
Sage is a seasoned AK veteran. He's been team leader on this trip.
If you've never been to AK, this year would be a great time to go.
Dash Longe throwing one of his signature "Sleepy Threes."

Four Snowpacks Over 100 Inches Four Snowpacks Over 100 Inches Deep Right Now
- From: ryandunfee
-
Description:
It’s safe to say that the majority of North American skiers and riders are looking at their snow tires and pow skis and wishing they spent the money on a mountain bike instead. After a freakish 2010-'11 winter that saw most of the US and Canada breaking snowfall records, it appears — for the time being — that the pendulum has swung the complete opposite direction. But that’s not the case everywhere. Fortunately the Northwest, Alaska, and Europe have been getting hammered. Here’s a look at four snowpacks that are over 100 inches deep right now.

Cody Townsend rips some Christmas powder at Alyeska Resort in Alaska. Photo by Charlie Renfro.
Alyeska Resort, Alaska - 109 inches
AK is famous for delivering the steep and deep. But that’s usually in April. Instead, AK has been a bright spot on the early-season radar, with the top of Alyeska sitting under a 109-inch base. Cody Townsend was there Christmas Week to get his faceshot fix with his newly-wed wife and Anchorage native Elyse Saugsted. The report? Blower. Everyday.
Mt. Baker has snow, 117 inches of it.
Mt. Baker, Washington - 117 inches
After picking up 857 inches last season, it looked like déjà vu for the locals when opening day in November saw the mountain flush with two feet of pow. While a lull of high pressure hit the region before Christmas, it appears that the snowtrain is back on the tracks. The top of Pan Dome is now counting a 117-inch base.
Lots of powder snow at Shames Mountain. Photo by Thomas Gould.
Shames Mountain, British Columbia - 130 inches
Well, BC has snow again. Should anyone be surprised? British Columbia seems to be as isolated from high-pressure systems as Iowa is from the foreclosure crisis, with the exception of the odd Pineapple Express. While much of the Northwest started off with a bang, the Canadians were the only ones who could keep the momentum going all the way through to the present. Shames Mountain, the quirky little co-op profiled this fall in Jordan Manley’s “A Skier’s Journey” webisode, is packing a hearty 130-inch base at mid-mountain these days. With the co-op looking for a new owner, the phrase “good timing” comes to mind.
Faceshots out the front door in St. Anton.
St. Anton Arlberg, Austria - 215 inches
If there is anyone who truly deserves to be happy with the way things are going this winter, it’s the Europeans. The past few seasons have been meager at best, with much of the region sitting high and dry. But now every schusser and fraulien is happily faceshotten on a regular basis, with over 15 resorts reporting a base deeper than 150 inches. Taking the cake? Austria’s St. Anton Arlberg, with a 215-inch base. That’s right – two hundred and fiteen inches. No typo. While many resorts across Europe are closing due to the extreme avalanche danger, when things calm down, there’s no doubt that conditions in the nicht praepariert (off-piste) will be all-time. - Blog post

News: Aaron Robinson And Iris News: Aaron Robinson And Iris Lazzareschi Win Final The North Face Masters Stop At Kirkwood
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
March 5, 2011
Kirkwood, California - With a storm rolling in, making the day a one-run competition, last year's men's overall tour winner Aaron Robinson was determined, and succeeded in taking home not only the win at Kirkwood but the overall title for a second year in a row. Iris Lazzareschi scored first for the women at Kirkwood, but was one point short of the overall crown with Maria DeBari taking top honors.
"Year after year, the riders just keep getting better," said Head Judge Tom Burt. "The competitiveness of the tour is off the charts. With the top two women being separated by only one point, and the overall winner for both men and women being anyone's game until the very end, it made for an exciting end to a great year."
Aaron Robinson was fast and fluid, and hit a natural feature in the middle of the venue for a big, floaty air. Robinson hit a spine at the bottom and threw a big frontside 360 finishing with a 91.33. He was followed in second place by Squaw Valley's Ralph Backstrom with an 89.33, who was also second in overall tour points. Third place in the competition went to Andrew Irwin with an 87.00.
"I'm super psyched. This morning, when I woke up, I said I was just going to go out and win this thing and I did," said Aaron Robinson. "I get to be the reigning champ for a whole year again; the two-time reigning champ this time."
For the women, it was bittersweet for Squaw Valley's Iris Lazzareschi, who took first in Kirkwood as well as in Crystal, but missed first overall by a single point. Lazzareschi impressed with an 88.3 and a line down looker's right into the upper Harnell's section, down to Frank's alternate, airing into the top, and finishing with an air out of the trees at the bottom. Callan Chythlook-Sifsof of Alyeska, AK came in second with an 85.67, and Mt. Baker?'s Maria DeBari took third at Kirkwood with an even 85.00, but came in first in overall tour standings.
"I went into it knowing that if I stomped everything I could probably do well. Everyone is riding so hard right now, you just never can tell. I rode my line hard and I'm stoked on it," said Maria DeBari. "I can't believe my overall win was only by one point, I'm definitely going to have to share the celebration with Iris. It was a really tough season this year and I'm just so excited to wind up on top."
The North Face Young Gun Award, which rewards rider under 25 years of age who demonstrate raw talent and innovation in their riding style, went to Callen Chythlook-Sifsof, and the overall tour Young Gun Award went to Josh Warnick, who took it home at the first stop of the season in Snowbird.
