Valdez, Alaska – A new tradition has been born on Thompson Pass in the legendary Chugach Mountains of Alaska. The Recco World Freeriding Championships went off – combining the ski field from the scheduled but weather cancelled WESC tribute with the tribute to the original big mountain snowboarding event, The King of the Hill.
“Due to challenging weather conditions during the competition, we decided to combine the fields from the ski and snowboarding events – what we came away with was an event the seamlessly combined both alpine traditions.” Competitors agreed. “I loved watching the skiers. Dan Vandermeulen’s runs were my favorite of the day,” said competitor Mike Basich.
On Wednesday, the skies over Alaska finally cleared with morning skies electric blue. The local National Guard as well as hardcore local snowmobilers rallied riders to the contest venue – Bro Bowl where the skiers went first – and mountain man legend Dan Vandermeulen dropped in flashing a high speed run over large exposed cliffs – setting the standard for the entire field. Dan ended up taking the victory with two hairball runs in no fall zones. Of note, Dan had the highest combined score of the event as the only competitor to top 500 (out of 600) points.
Next the snowboard competitors took to the stage –TNF Masters Champion Aaron Robinson straight lined both runs – even charging one switch. Former national halfpipe competitor Ross Baker turned heads as well. “Ross really surprised me with how hard he rips for a young guy.” said Snowboarder Magazine photographer Jeff Hawe. Ross grabbed second place. Mammoth local Scott Sheer took the third spot, stomping large cliffs in each run. The winner was Kirkwood local Will Brommelsiek taking top to bottom runs fluidly through some of the venues most challenging and dangerous terrain.
On the women’s side, Juneau’s Holly Enderle took the victory with clean airs and a fluid line through Bro Bowl. North Face Masters champion Iris Lazzareschi took second place and Australian Rachel Sheidow rounded out the podium.
Tailgate Alaska finishes up today with a couple of days of electric blue weather, concluding another banner year for the World Freeride Festival. According to organizer Mark Sullivan, “This year we learned a lot about putting on a major event. We worked with the State and local governments, local population and wintersports community to create something unique for mountain enthusiasts. Perhaps men’s competitor Dave Watson summed it up best, “This has been an amazing learning experience. It is awesome and I am definitely coming back”

24 HOURS THAT CHANGED MY LIFE 24 HOURS THAT CHANGED MY LIFE

I just might have had the best 24 hours in my life snowboarding at Tailgate Alaska. By Andrew Mutty, Flow Snowboards.STORY FROM: Tailgate Alaska News
12am- Flew into AK in the middle of the night with my face glued to the window trying to see the terrain. With the little help from moon light I saw a familiar glow of snow atop the ranges that boarder the Anchorage area.
1am- One way to kick start an epic trip is to catch up on sleep for 5 hours on a bench in the airport.
6am- Awoke to the sunrise across the tarmac and waited to board my flight to Valdez. First to board a flight guaranteeing a window seat.
7:30am- Over a cup of coffee and a cranberry juice I became an instant tourist with 2 cameras and two video cameras on my seat alternating turns. Flying over the ranges into Valdez was a unforgettable flight.
8:10am- Landing in Valdez was much like being dropped off at the bottom of the stairway to heaven... You can see it, but you have to climb the stairs to get there.... And so I did. Good thing the airlines lost my luggage rather than my board bag because I would need my snowboard more than my toothbrush.
9am- Hotel check in and gear up
10:30am- within 2 hours of landing in Valdez, I found my way to base camp.
Mikey Basich dry docks it above a mandatory double.
The Farm shreds on his 45th birthday.1pm- Standing at the bottom of bro bowl, watching the legends, and the current freeride killers of the sport drop lines I had only seen in the mags and on tv. For the first time in my life I was in awe... Awe for the fact I was amount the best of the best and the most legendary kings of the hill. Met Nick Perata, watched Shaun Farmer drop bro bowl on his birthday, and got to see Mike Basich drop a double cliff more gnarly than anything else I had seen,... all within 30 minutes of being at the event.
2pm- After being a spectator it was finally time to be a participant and go get some for my own. When I had my chance I took it... Lago rolled up on a sled and I asked him for a ride to the top. When I made it to the top I almost shit myself. I wiped out my iPhone to get a couple shots and when I later looked at it I was clearly shaking. Shaking with excitement and nervousness that I had never felt before. Dropping in was a dream come true. A short blast of maybe 1000 vertical, I had a few turns that I will never forget.3pm- Made my decent back to base camp we stopped aside the first judge of the freeride halfpipe and watched half the crew roll through. Jokes of chunder and mash potatoes heckled each rider. One could notice the obvious signs of wear and tear each rider had as the day grew longer their legs began to give out.
4pm- Final decent back to base camp.
5pm- Special invite for a Heli trip. I couldn’t believe it, but also knew this was one of those rare moments where you cant hesitate and cant refuse. Heli brief and beacon test before we gathered to fly.
6pm- Lift off with the crew, heading for RFS6:10pm- Drop off.
6:15pm- Literally on top of the world. Nothing else mattered... Nothing. This was most likely the most peaceful place on earth.6:20pm- Lock and load.
Our guide Badger gets some on RFS6:25pm- Drop in. One of the most humbling experiences in my life was about 2 turns into the run when I realized this was seriously the steepest snowboarding I have done. Badger our guide gives this slope a 49 degree pitch, but from my perspective it felt more like 60. The heart was racing...and adrenaline levels were peaking... And every second was like a flash before your eyes, pretty much an epic dream come true.
Anthony president of Flow Snowboards.
7pm- Waiting for a van ride back to base camp. Flows Mark Liscak
7:30pm- Decompression. Hanging out at Tailgate camp, slapping high fives and talking about the day was a relaxing time in a hectic crazy day. Cheers Scotty Lago8pm- Shuttle back to the hotel.
9pm-12am- Pipeline. Playing pool with the Jackson hole squad and watching the locals cut a rug.
24 hours in Alaska. Maybe I got lucky with the weather, maybe I had earned it, maybe it was just meant to be.... Tailgate AK 2011. Where do I sign up?

Travis Rice wins legendary Kin Travis Rice wins legendary King of the Hill Competition
- From: media-75233

Description:
Huntington Beach, CA (April 6, 2010) – Quiksilver rider Travis Rice made official this weekend what people have been saying since his win at the Quiksilver Natural Selection and the premiere of That’s It, That’s All: He is the King of the Hill. With innate confidence and skill, Travis convincingly won Alaska’s King of the Hill as the event ran for the first time in over a decade.
“It’s great to see this event finally return to snowboarding,” says Rice. “Conditions were all time and the venue was spot on for a long overdue AK shred contest. Everyone there threw down - it was a great day for snowboarding. I hope to see this event grow to what it once was in the years to come.”
Held in Bro Bowl outside of Valdez, Alaska on Thompson Pass, the competition’s terrain featured narrow chutes, wind lips, cliff lines, and cornices. After dropping off a big Method off the first cornice, Rice charged into a wind lip with speed. The Jackson-native’s run was highlighted by a 70-foot backside 720, which he landed solidly. His run finished with straight lining down a three-foot wide chute before riding out of a rocky section. Rice finished in first in front of friends Rob Kingwill and Scotty Lago.

Following the weekend’s contest, Rice will stay in Alaska looking for the bluebird days to head out and film for his next two-year epic project, Flight. He’ll be in Whistler next week during the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival to attend a pop-up for AsymbolGallery.com, a new online gallery that he’s created with snowboarder/artist, Mike Parillo.
In 2010/11 Rice has a full collection of Quiksilver signature gear, which he designed and tested with the Quiksilver design team to excel in any condition or circumstance. Look for Gore-Tex outerwear, backcountry packs, Italian-made orbicular goggles, outerwear designed with 100% recycled polyester and more.
Check out Rice and the entire Quiksilver snow team at Quiksilver.com/snow where you’ll also find weekly episodes of the Todcast, hosted by Quiksilver rider, Todd Richards.
