Description:
The 9th and last of the Nike Chosen Series proved to be a standout with the Norwegians displaying an incredibly high level of riding in this AM contest.
The perfectly shaped 15m Kicker, located on the same slope as last month’s World Snowboard Championship, gave the 37 rider’s ample chances to show the judges and watching public that Scandinavian riders can deliver the goods. Nike Chosen Series - 08 Austri Nike Chosen Series - 08 Austria Hochkonig
- From: nike
-
Description:The shapers at the Kingspark in Hochkönig, Austria worked tirelessly to prepare the Chosen Series kicker after overnight snow threatened the 8th and penultimate stop of Nike Chosen Series. The 15m step-over style jump proved challenging to all the riders and their efforts were compounded with bad visibility from the start.A previous winner of Best Style from the German stop, Jonel Fricke, worked the mic to keep the riders and crowd stoked whilst retail partner Blue Tomato kept spirits up with warm snacks and drinks as the 24 riders braved the snow, cold and cross winds in a bid to take the MVP and a ticket to the Nike Chosen Sessions.Ultimately the weather ruled the comp and with Finals unable to take place riders were judged on their performance in the Qualis. Peter Walchhofer took Best Style following his inverted FS7 tailgrab, Most Creative went to Markus Bernhard by laying out a powder run to knuckle line, but handling the tough conditions by sticking everything with style and composure was Stephan Wimmer from Innsbruck - BS5s, 7s and 9s – who claimed MVP and booked his spot at The Nike Chosen Sessions in April.

The sun blazed all day over the classic ski resort of Vallnord, Andorra for the 7th Stop on the Nike Chosen Series.

Nike Chosen Series - 06 France Nike Chosen Series - 06 France Chatel
- From: nike
-
Description:
The traditional French resort of Chatel, deep in the Porte Du Soleil set the arena for the 6th Stop on the Nike Chosen Series.
Together the town and the resort helped to create one of the best atmospheres seen so far on the Series, providing much welcome coffee and croissants in registration as the icy wind took temperatures down to -15, before laying on a free BBQ for all riders and spectators as the Finals got under way.
With Nike rider Gerome Mathieu judging and much of Chatel town watching, the 22 entered riders delivered a great show. The Nike team along with Head Shaper Alex Creuse created a15m kicker measuring 19m to sweet spot, guaranteeing both distance and height whilst giving the amateurs the confidence to try all their tricks as they battled it out for MVP.
Maxence Tevelle took Most Creative with a BS 180 Double Tailgrab, Handdrags on the Nike bonk and Frontflips off the knuckle. Romuald Bouche took Best Style with Switch Back 1s, 5s and 9s before adding a FS9 for good measure. 19-year-old Grenoble resident Marion Haerty took best Female with BS and FS 180s.
As the day of great vibes rolled out it was 18 year old French rider Enzo Nilo from Bidant who showed all round performance and consistency taking the Most Valuable Player (MVP) with FS5s, corked 7s both ways, a Switch Backside 9 and a FS10.
Celebrating his own 27th birthday on the day French Nike rider Gerome Mathieu presented the winning AM Enzo with his ticket to the Sessions Final in Austria, April 2012.

Nike Chosen Series - 05 German Nike Chosen Series - 05 Germany/Austria Ehrwald
- From: nike
-
Description:
An extremely cold Ehrwald, Germany played host to the 5th Stop on the Nike Chosen Series. With temperatures dropping to -20C, the free-flowing Jam format came into its element as a steady succession of riders set upon the 15m table, including Evgeniy Joon Ivanov who had made the mammoth trip from Moscow, Russia. €2500 was also on offer for riders making the 10 man finals meaning the 35 signed up riders had even more to play for.
Local girl Nadine Hartinger from Munich took Best Female with her stylish nose grabs over the Nike bonk ball. Daniel Mosl, Most Creative with a huge Switch Frontside Air and Double Back Flip, leaving friend and nearby Innsbruck resident Jonel Fricke to take home Best Style with a beastly Backside 5 Chicken Salad and FS 7 melon.
But Felix Georgii demonstrated an arsenal of tricks throughout the day and finals including BS5 Tailbones, Switch Backside 7s and Rodeos that couldn’t be ignored, eventually earning him the Most Valuable Player.
On hand to welcome him as the next Am to join the Nike Chosen Sessions, Danny Kass, fresh from a recon trip to the Sessions Final location in Austria declared Felix the German champion and claimed that “He rode like a pro, now it’s time to ride with the pro’s”.

- From: nike
-
Description:
he fourth stop of the Nike Chosen Series were held in Hoch Ybrig in the foot hills of the Swiss Alps, and got underway despite being pushed back a day due to bad weather.
With only occasional breaks in the cloud, visibility gave the riders an added challenge over the 15m kicker and bonk obstacle, leaving the 3 judges (DBK, Raphi Rocha and local shaper Matthias Burch) to make a call to skip qualifiers and run a straight up final with all riders.
With a Nike Sessions ticket on the table all riders upped their game in what was a great atmosphere in the park, local Arvet Fuchs styled a Superman front flip and his first ever backside double cork and Roger Schuler held onto a switch back stale almost all the way to the ground.
Making the trip up from Berne, Markus Mathis took the MVP of the day with a consistent array of tricks throughout the jam including a back 10 double cork.
Markus will travel to the Nike Chosen Sessions in April to session with the Nike Pros and compete against all the Series winners to find ultimate Chosen.

Nike Chosen Series - 03 Italy Nike Chosen Series - 03 Italy Kronplatz
- From: nike
-
Description:
With a foot of fresh snow falling over night, the expert F-Tech shaper crew pulled out the stops to make Kronplatz, Italy, proud with an immaculate kicker for the 3rd stop of the Nike Chosen Series.
From the off, local brothers Daniel (Back 7 Melon to shifty) and Oliver Reichegger (Front Rodeo 5 Stiffy) took the event by the reins, laying down a huge variety of spins and double grabs which saw them sail into the finals.
Joining them in the 10-man cut was Alex Reiner (Front 7 double tail) and David Mahlknecht (Front 10 Melon).
With a judging format that looks for a variety or tricks and spins each way in favour of single bangers, the finals saw the biggest variation of double grabs so far on the 9-stop tour. Daniel Reichegger was consistent throughout using the kicker and the bonk feature in equal measure giving the judges a stoke with a floated miller flip, classic stylish Cab 5s, a maverick back 5 double nose grab and a backside 9 nose grab - the award for MVP (most valuable player) was never in doubt.

News: Daron Rahlves, Shane McC News: Daron Rahlves, Shane McConkey and Glen Plake Lead 2010 U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame Class
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
October 14, 2010
Ishpeming, Michigan - World Champion ski racer Daron Rahlves, (Truckee, CA), one of the world’s most noted big mountain skiers, the late Shane McConkey (formerly of Squaw Valley, CA), and iconic skiing legend Glen Plake, (Heavenly, CA) are among a roster of six skiers and builders named as inductees to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame’s Class of 2010. The announcement was made by Hall of Fame Chairman, Bernie Weichsel of Waltham, MA.
They will be joined by Paralympic medalist and World Champion Muffy Davis, (Salt Lake City), U.S. champion from the 1960s and '70s and 1972 Olympian Bobby Cochran (Surry, NH), and noted sport builder and Sun Valley owner Earl Holding (Salt Lake City). The class will be inducted on Apr. 2 at Sun Valley, ID as part of a week long celebration of skiing history including Sun Valley’s 75th season as a major ski resort.
"This year’s Hall of Fame inductees include some great diversity in contributions to our sport," said Weichsel. "Each shares in common a great passion for skiing and each has made a tremendous difference in bringing recognition to this lifelong sport enjoyed by millions around the world."
Bobby Cochran is the third member of the famous skiing family from Vermont to enter the Hall of Fame, joining sisters Barbara (Class of ’76) and Marilyn (Class of ’78). Through the 1960s and '70s Cochran displayed exemplary dedication, discipline and excellence in state, national, collegiate, international and professional ski racing. He became, at the age of 16, one of the youngest skiers to be selected to the U.S. Ski Team and enjoyed a six-year career (1968-74) before moving on to the World Professional Tour. His career of success started early when as a high school freshman he won the U.S. Junior Championship in giant slalom in 1967. He went on to win seven U.S. titles between 1969 and 1973. He also added an NCAA downhill title to his resume. He won the prestigious Roch Cup downhill in 1971. In 1973, his best season, he became the first U.S. male skier to win a World Cup giant slalom and reached the podium in three out of four skiing disciplines. The highlight of that year was his winning the Hahnenkamm combined. Over three seasons from 1970 to 1973, Cochran achieved 22 top 10 placements on the World Cup tour including four podium finishes.
Muffy Davis grew up racing with Olympic champion Picabo Street in Sun Valley until a ski racing accident in 1989 ended her career as an able-bodied skier. She elected to return to her academic studies completing a degree at Stanford before returning to the slopes after attending Hall of Famer Sarah Will’s adaptive skiing camp in 1995. Thus began an outstanding career resulting in four Paralympic medals (a bronze and three silvers), a World Championship gold in 2000 and back-to-back World Cup overall titles in 2000 and 2001. During her racing career she reached the podium 20 times. She also successfully completed first wheelchair ascents of Mount Shasta and Pike’s Peak.
The sole sport builder in this class, Earl Holding is known in the business world as the owner of Sinclair Oil and the Little America chain of hotels. But, in 1977, he purchased Sun Valley and began a revitalization and beautification program to restore the historic resort that in 1936 was among the first to be built in the United States. This investment program included the planting of over 7,000 trees, installing seven new detachable quad lifts and the world’s largest automated snowmaking system. New lodges and other improvements were made to improve the skier and family experience, including an eight passenger gondola to the historic Round House Lodge. A Salt Lake City native, Holding played a key role in bringing the 2002 Olympic Winter Games to that city and contributed significantly to its success. He purchased and developed Snowbasin into a world class ski area which hosted the men’s and women’s Olympic downhill, combined and super G events.
The late Shane McConkey has been called the most influential skier of his generation for popularizing free skiing and encouraging the development of equipment so more skiers could enjoy back country and deep powder conditions. In 1993 he won the World Pro Mogul Tour and added the South American Freeskiing championship in 1994. The next year he claimed the U.S. Freeskiing championship and twice won, in 1996 and 1998, the International Freeskier Association World Tour Championship. He was a leader in bringing “fat skis” to the slopes. In 2002, he helped develop the first reverse camber and reverse side cut ski, the Volant Spatula, and four years later introduced the K2 Pontoon. During his career he was featured in 26 films about skiing and became a world leader in ski base jumping. He died in a ski base jumping accident on March 26, 2009.
Matchstick Productions' Shane McConkey "In Deep" Tribute
With his signature multi-colored Mohawk hairstyle and his unrelenting enthusiasm for skiing, Glen Plake is certainly the best-known and recognizable skier in the world. The three time World Hot Dog skiing champion has become the symbol of the fun, joy and spirit of skiing. His outstanding ability on skis and personality have made him a skiing film star and many of the films that he has appeared in are now classics in the industry including "The Blizzard of Aahhh’s," "Fistful of Moguls," "License to Thrill," "The Edge of Never" and this year's "Legend of Aahhh’s." His television and magazine appearances as well as commentary work is seemingly endless. He continues to promote skiing at all levels from his high altitude expeditions around the world to his "Down Home Tour" where Glen and his wife Kimberly ski at local areas around the United States.
Daron Rahlves retired from the U.S. Alpine Ski Team in 2006 as the single most decorated skier in the downhill with nine World Cup victories to his credit. Among his victories was his 2003 win at the historic and prestigious Hahnenkamm in Kitzbuhel Austria. Two years earlier he had stunned the highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic crowd at St Anton, Austria by beating local heroes Stephan Eberharter and Hermann Maier for the World Championship gold medal in the super G. He capped his World Championship resume with a bronze medal in the giant slalom in 2005. His career record includes four U.S. titles and 16 World Cup podiums. An outstanding athlete he also holds the 1993 Expert World Championship title in jet skiing and has won many extreme skiing events. After leaving the alpine team Rahlves became one of the world’s best ski cross athletes, leading the USA in the newest Olympic sport at the Vancouver Olympics, his fourth as a U.S. Olympian.
Almost Live - Daron Rahlves: Sympathy For the Devil - Episode 11
The Hall of Fame Induction will be held on Saturday, Apr. 2 in Sun Valley and will cap a week of festivities. The week will include the annual gathering of the International Skiing History Association as well as a series of industry reunions.
"Our annual induction ceremony has grown considerably the last two years with successful events at Park City Resort and Beaver Creek," said Weichsel. "This year’s celebration will be even bigger and a great way to showcase these amazing heroes of our sport."
The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame is located in Ishpeming, MI, the birthplace of organized skiing in America. Its mission is to provide respected, permanent national recognition for excellence in achievement in skiing and snowboarding. The class of 2010 was elected by a National Voting Panel of over 100 electors chosen for their knowledge and enthusiasm for snow sports. The six new inductees will bring the Honor Roll to 374 individuals recognized since 1956.

Teton Ice Park Re-Opens After Teton Ice Park Re-Opens After Crazy Difficulties with the Forest Service
- From: susiebear
-
Description:
Following a three-week shut down, the Teton Ice Park at Grand Targhee is slated to re-open this coming weekend. During this most recent shut down the local and regional Forest Supervisors were flooded with letters of support from climbers, local business owners, and national non-profit advocacy groups. Citing liability concerns, the venue was shut down by the Caribou-Targhee National Forest as they reviewed the ice park’s insurance policy, and asked for further changes to its operations plan.
“The whole thing has been incredibly stressful and costly,” said owner and operator Christian Santelices. “This is the third shutdown of our short ice climbing season since our original permit was issued. It has severely affected our business, not to mention our family life. Obama’s ‘State of the Union Address’ stating that the Federal Government would do everything in its power to encourage entrepreneurship, formation of jobs and economic growth through small business just made us more frustrated that we could be opened and shut down even with a signed government permit.”
The Teton Ice Park opened on December 19th following a year-long permitting process. From the start it had wide support from climbers, sponsors and the press. “We had great momentum going into the holidays. We’ve been written up in all the local papers, as well as Idaho Falls and even Salt Lake City. We’ve also aired on Kris Millgate’s NBC and Fox program as well as appearing on the Weather Channel. We even got interviewed for an article in London’s Guardian Newspaper,” said Santelices. All of the publicity meant that the ice park was looking forward to a successful opening season. “I’m not sure the Forest Service anticipated that there would be so much use and that the feature would be as impressive as it is.”
“I can’t discount the Forest Service’s concerns. Ice climbing is a dangerous sport. But we have worked hard to follow all the guidelines set forth in the original permit and our business plan to make the Teton Ice Park as safe as possible. Any other ice climbing in the Tetons involves much higher risk from avalanche and ice fall.” The problem lies in our litigious society and everyone worried about covering his or her own back. In this country organized adventure sports face extreme barriers because individuals are not willing to take responsibility for their own risks.
Rather than get a lawyer and try to re-coop his losses, an act that just makes the above problem worse, Santelices has chosen to move forward even though “we have been required to triple our insurance rate, become a concession of Grand Targhee Resort, and climbing can no longer be open “free” to the public, a condition written into the original permit.”
“I also feel obligated to our supporters, my employees (especially the water truck driver laid off from MD nursery), and the Teton Valley Community who will benefit from this venue growing and flourishing,” he says. “I’m also indebted to Grand Targhee whose managers have been incredible in helping with these hurdles and taking us under their wing in the short amount of time the Forest Service has changed their conditions.”
Santelices, an internationally certified IFMGA through the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) and Chief Guide for Exum Mountain Guides will continue to offer privately guided classes for climbers of all abilities. The new operations plan requires that all other guides hold their “Alpine Guide” certification through the AMGA, a requirement that most of Teton Ice Park’s guides who work for Exum and Jackson Hole Mountain Guides already hold.
Experienced climbers with their own gear can continue to use the Teton Ice Park but they must buy a 1-year membership card ($40) or pay a $10 day-use fee and be “checked out” by a certified guide or “Ice Park Ambassador” who will go over safety and technique issues with them before allowing them to climb. Members can only climb on days that a guide or Ambassador is on site, and those days are on a calendar on the website, www.tetonice.com. Both Saturday and Sunday this weekend Ambassadors will be on site to certify members 9am-5pm.
At this point, the future of the Teton Ice Park depends on public support through the purchase of memberships and community sponsors. “The more members we can get- the more ice we can make,” said Santelices. “We also need more Ambassadors who are experienced climbers willing to go through a training session and volunteer to be available if someone needs help on the days they are there climbing.” Santelices hopes to expand the Teton Ice Park onto adjoining cliffs but “without cutting some of our losses this year we won’t be able to open next year.”
Other events and bonuses for members include a series of “Self Rescue Clinics.” The first one will be taught be Santelices on Saturday, Feb. 13. Mattie Schaefer of Teton Mountaineering will hold a Women’s Clinic (date TBA) and a Black Diamond Demo Day will be held at the end of February.
