Thousands Rage At The Dream Fa Thousands Rage At The Dream Factory World Premiere
- From: SamPetri
-
Description:
On Saturday, Teton Gravity Research premiered its newest ski and snowboard film, The Dream Factory, to a few thousand fired-up fans at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort inside Walk Festival Hall.
The party kicked off around 3 p.m. with free beer and yard games in front of the TGR production office, right next to the JHMR tram. Yes that’s right, free beer next to the tram. As fans tossed back cool ones on the warm, sunny afternoon, Erik Roner, Ian McIntosh and Marshall Miller buzzed over Teton Village and jumped out of a plane, skydiving in to the venue with smoke trailing off their feet. All three stomped their landings in a rather tight common area between The Mangy Moose and Hotel Terra. That kicked the crowd in to high gear, and the vibe ramped up from there.
Marshall Miller, Erik Roner and Ian McIntosh skydive in to the world premiere of The Dream Factory.
Marshall Miller gets ready to stomp his landing.
To accommodate all the fans who want to see the movie, each year there are two showings of the TGR movie – the early show and the late show. The early show is a bit mellower and the late show is rowdy. With about a thousand people in line to the venue, you could feel the hype in the air. Screw it if it’s still summer – the TGR premiere marks the beginning of winter in the Tetons. There you are, back at the base of the ski area with all your winter friends celebrating the act of sliding on snow. It’s an extraordinary feeling of camaraderie.Inside, almost all of the TGR athletes were there signing posters including: Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Seth Morrison, Dylan Hood, Erik Roner, Dana Flahr, Dash Longe, Todd Ligare, Daron Rahlves, Forrest Shearer, Chris Benchetler, Griffin Post, Ralph Backstrom, Angel Collinson, Tim Durtschi, Matt Philippi and Max Hammer.
There was a mass amount of giveaways from TGR sponsors like GoPro, The North Face, Atomic, Marker, Volkl, Scott, DNA, Smith Optics, Black Diamond and The Ski Journal.
The scene inside Walk Festival Hall.
Tim Durtschi interacts with a fan.
Erik Roner gets the youth fired up to ski.
The film looks back to the roots of the freeriding movement in Alaska while at the same time looking to the future of the sport. In that sense, it was very cool to see members of the Jackson Hole Air Force as well as kids from the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard club together in attendance. It made for a cohesive vibe where people of all ages were celebrating just how freaking awesome it is to soar down the mountains on snow.
The film layers the most current ski footage from Alaska with historical clips. Really, two stories are told – that of the new freeriders and the pioneers before them. In all, the film shows the progression of skiing and snowboarding in Alaska, The Dream Factory. One technique used this year is side-by-side footage of skiers shredding lines back in the day matched with people skiing the same lines now. Seeing this, you realize how far the sport has come and how monumental it was when people accomplished those feats for the first time. A couple of memorable moments like this come when you see Ralph Backstrom ride a line in Valdez made famous by Johan Olofsson in Totally Board 5. And when Colter Hinchliffe shreds a line in Haines called Dr. Seuss, made famous by Jeremy Jones. There are other stand-out performances by Tim Durtschi, Dash Longe, Dana Flahr, Daron Rahlves … Well, everyone pretty much crushes it – it’s a TGR flick.
Not to be missed is the heavy hitting Corbet’s Couloir segment at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. There, John Spriggs kicks off the session with a huge back flip into the line followed by the likes of Daniel Tisi, who, at the age of 13, airs into the line larger than most grown men ever have. In almost every segment the viewer is shown the past, present and future of skiing and snowboarding.
Marc-Andre Belliveau plays at the Mangy Moose.
Dash Longe joined Marc-Andre on stage.
After the movie a party raged at The Mangy Moose. TGR skier Marc-Andre Belliveau – who last appeared in Lost And Found – played an acoustic set as an opener for the headliner American Royalty. While American Royalty rocked hard – playing a triple encore because the crowd would not let them off stage – perhaps one of the best moments came when Dash Longe joined Marc Andre on stage for a rendition of “Raging Alcoholic.” It was a soulful moment that set the vibe for the party and let people send it deep in to the night.
Here's to winter.
American Royalty effing whaled.

The Dream Factory World Premie The Dream Factory World Premiere Weekend Ramps Up
- From: SamPetri
-
Description:
Alas, premiere season is upon us.
The nights are getting colder, leaves are changing color, and there has even been a dusting of snow in the hills. That hint of winter snaps shredders out of their summer slump to celebrate the coming ski season. If you’re super into blasting through fresh pow, ski movie premieres are the ultimate way to get your head back in the game: You look back at last season, remember how awesome it was, and you get stoked for this season.
Tonight, Teton Gravity Research’s newest film, The Dream Factory, premieres at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. For the past three days TGR athletes have been getting to town and ramping up the level of stoke.
As a company, we hold three main events this weekend: The TGR Dinner on top of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort gondola, the TGR Tee-Off Golf Tournament at Teton Pines, and finally the TGR world premiere at Walk Festival Hall with an after party at the Mangy Moose.
Check out the TGR staff iPhone photos from the weekend so far, and if you can’t be here tonight, get to a premiere near you.
The scene at the TGR Dinner at the top of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort gondola. As you can see, things got blurry quick.
Look at that handsome devil Todd Ligare. Cheers!
The three amigos: Ralph Backstrom, Rachael Burks and Dana Flahr.
TGR founder Todd Jones and TGR cinematographer Dustin Handley.
The following day, we went golfing at Teton Pines. It was the 12th Annual TGR Tee-Off Invitational. Always progressing the sport, TGR took its freestyle to the back nine.
Longtime TGR photographer Greg Von Doersten was amped to play.
Getting back into the swing of things with TGR web guru Chris Dunn, editor Blake Campbell and GVD.
Ralphy B putts one in.
Daron Rahlves drains one.
TGR's Dustin Handley, GoPro skydiver Marshall Miller, and TGR Tee-Off event organizer Dave Hudacsko were very, very stoked.
It was all a dream.
We played super late and in the end, there was a tie between two teams. The winner was determined in a chip and putt-off under cellphone strobe lights. It was an epic, head-to-head sudden-death scenario between Tommy Moe, Daron Rahlves, Griffin Post, and Seth Morrison with long distance putts being sunk left and right. It was as if the game would never end. No one was backing down.
In the end, Griffin Post and Seth Morrison's team played to victory. Congratulations boys, you are true champions. See you on the course next year.
Stay tuned for more shenanigans from the World Premiere weekend.

News: Skiing And Snowboarding News: Skiing And Snowboarding See Unified World Tour For 2013, Dates Announced
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Lausanne, Switzerland / Salt Lake City, USA – Event organizers of Swatch Freeride World Tour, Freeskiing World Tour, and The North Face Masters of Snowboarding announced this week a merger that will combine all three tours under one unified, global, five-star championship series. The new six-stop world tour, named the Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face, will include freeride skiing and snowboarding at each stop.
Confirmed tour locations include Revelstoke, Canada, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France, Kirkwood, USA, Fieberbrunn Pillerseetal, Austria, and one more stop still to be confirmed, before the World Tour finals in Verbier, Switzerland.
"The union of the three tours is a major step in the sports' growth," said Nicolas Hale-Woods, Freeride World Tour Managing Director Europe. "Not only at the Freeride World Tour level, but also at the qualifying level, with events happening in New Zealand, North and South America, and Europe, all counting toward one unique Freeride World Qualifier ranking, enabling riders from all active areas to qualify for the next season's Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face."
"Big mountain freeriding has a long and rich history with incredibly talented athletes around the world," said Adam Comey, Mountain Sports International President and Freeride World Tour Managing Director Americas. "Now, with two great brands in Swatch and The North Face, and two dedicated organizations in Europe and North America coming together for one mission and one tour, the next chapter of freeride skiing and snowboarding is very bright."
For 2013, start lists will feature qualified athletes from all three of the 2012 tours, as well as from qualifier events (four-star events), along with a limited number of wild card entries from both continents.
"The merger of the two ski tours is a great step for our sport," said 2012 Swatch Freeride World Tour Champion Reine Barkered of Sweden. "It will add even more recognition around the world. For me, as a rider, I'm looking forward to an even more exciting season with a lot of new faces."
American skier Drew Tabke, a long-time competitor and podium leader on both tours, agrees: "Beyond the details of judging, rankings, and format, I'm most excited to see the two tours' top riders compete against one another. The best event last year was the combined event at Revelstoke. This event represented the ideal outcome of this merger of the two tours: A legitimate representation of the world's best riders competing at a world-class venue."
American snowboarder Ralph Backstrom, a title contender on both tours, says, "I couldn't be more stoked to hear that the The North Face Masters and FWT will be combined for next season. I look forward to seeing some more North Americans at the European stops, some more Euros in North America, and an increased talent pool."
In addition to the five-star Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face, there will be around 40 qualifier events (FWQ) around the world, ranging from one to four-stars, for up-and-coming athletes to earn a spot on the next year's FWT. First stops of the four-star FWQ will be in New Zealand and in Chile in August 2012. Riders will score points in two separate rankings, a five-star FWT ranking and a one to four-star FWQ ranking.
The North Face, a long-time supporter of big mountain skiing and snowboarding, the Freeskiing World Tour, and founder of The North Face Masters of Snowboarding, has joined on as presenting sponsor to the new, merged Freeride World Tour.
"The North Face is excited to be a partner in this next generation of freeride competition. Athletes like Ingrid Backstrom and Dana Flahr were able to foster and showcase their talents in this competitive forum and we're looking forward to the expansion of this arena across multiple sports," said Aaron Carpenter, Vice President of Marketing at The North Face. "We take pride in the role our pioneering athletes and innovative products have in both the history and future of action sports. This collaboration signifies our commitment to the continual evolution of freeriding and its athletes."
"It is a great pride to welcome The North Face as presenting partner of Swatch Freeride World Tour. The fit between the two brands is just perfect," said Nicolas Hale-Woods, Freeride World Tour Managing Director Europe.
Along with the addition of The North Face for 2013, long time partner of Freeride World Tour, Swatch is back as title sponsor for the second year, making it possible for a tour of this size to continue to thrive and evolve.
"As a long-term supporter of freeride skiing and snowboarding we're very happy to see the merger of the top European and North American events into the Swatch Freeride World Tour by the North Face. There's nothing more exciting and inspiring than to see top athletes performing at their best, and the six big-mountain venues on the new world tour are spectacular sites for all-out competition at the highest level. We can't wait! [for the season to start]" said Marco Vaccari, Head of Marketing International Swatch Ltd.
Freeride World Tour also welcomes a new FWT supplier: PrimaLoft, key actor of the winter sports industry in terms of comfort and security.

Interview: Angel Collinson On Interview: Angel Collinson On Filming With TGR In Alaska
- From: brigidmander
-
Description:
Angel Collinson hangs out at the Northern Chugach Mountains while filming with Teton Gravity Research for its newest movie, The Dream Factory. Photo by Adam Clark.
Angel Collinson has been on the rise ever since she came on the big-mountain ski scene a few years ago. At 21 years old, she has won the Freeskiing World Tour in 2010, 2011 and came in second overall this past season. The industry has taken note, including the Teton Gravity Research production team. This year, TGR took Angel up to the biggest venue of all – Alaska – to film for our newest movie, The Dream Factory.
We caught up with her to find out how it was to shred with skiers she grew up admiring, what she has planned for women’s freeskiing, and why she may forgo a ski trip to South America to bang nails at home in Utah.
On the opportunity to film with TGR in Alaska:
I got the call from TGR this January asking if I'd like to film with them. I was already committed to a full season of big mountain competitions, but filming with TGR has always been a dream of mine and I wanted to make both agendas work. The first trip was with Erik Roner up to Haines, Alaska. It was cool to have a small group, and Erik was really great with tips and advice to help me feel more comfortable in the new situation of heli-skiing and filming. Because of my busy comp schedule, I could only be up there for a week. I still learned a lot.
On Alaska, round II:
The other trip I took with TGR was up in the Northern Chugach, flying out of the Knik River Lodge, with Dana [Flahr], Seth [Morrison] and Sage [Cattabriga-Alosa]. By the time Dana and I got up there in mid-April, a lot of the snow was good, [but] it wasn't good enough to be filmable. It has to be almost perfect. It was frustrating, and we didn't ski that gnarly of lines. That being said, we still got to ski some sick lines, and the last day we were up there were the biggest lines we had skied yet.
On showing up ready to charge on a new stage:
My racing background has laid out a really good foundation for strong technique, so when I'm on top of something gnarly, I'm excited and confident, ready to fire it up.
Looking at all the [AK] terrain, I thought to myself: "I know I can ski that, and ski it fast and well too, if the conditions were right," and knowing that definitely made me recognize where I've come to in my skiing, looking up at huge lines knowing they are definitely within my ability. I feel like I have been training my whole life for Alaska lines.
Angel Collinson rips a line in Alaska's Northern Chugach Mountains. Photo by Adam Clark.
On stepping it up to the next level:
I am going to transition into other travel and film projects [instead of competition]. It's hard to improve your skiing when you are traveling and competing all the time — you don't have a lot of training time. I can't wait to actually have time to improve, and my focus is on working on tricks and bigger airs. Once I feel like I can confidently throws tricks off of most cliffs and consistently stomp big airs, I might do a comp here and there — those are the things that I want to bring into the competition field.
On moving out of the parents house:
Well, my brother John and I are still living in Little Cottonwood Canyon with the fam, spending every day building a house as a family at the mouth of Little Cottonwood. Our goal is to have the house done by the fall, and then John and I will move in together. I can't wait to share a house with just him. He's always been my best bud and favorite person to ski with.
Yesterday I was taking down ski posters and magazine cutouts from the room I lived in since I was little, and there were all these pics of Sage, Seth, and Dana. It was crazy to be like, I was looking at these pics when I was 10 years old and getting fired up, and now I just got done with an AK trip filming with them! A dream come true.
On appreciating - and accomplishing - life:
While it's cool to have a lot of distinguished accomplishments, if you didn't have fun while doing them, to me they are not as meaningful. And on the flipside, maybe you didn't really accomplish anything but look back on the time period and it brings warmth to your heart and you feel like you are really ALIVE. To me, that's a success, and something to be proud of — to look back at accomplishments, or lack of, and say, "Yeah. I'm doing it! I'm living, I'm happy, and I appreciate everything I got." To come out of a season feeling like that is what I'm the proudest of. - Blog post

Description:
The TGR crew spent the entire season filming in different locations around Alaska for its upcoming new film "The Dream Factory". The grand finale was five weeks in a relatively unexplored zone in the Northern Chugach with infinite first descents.
Halfway through the trip Angel Collinson and Dana Flahr tagged out Dash Longe and Daron Rahlves to join Seth Morrison and Sage Cattabriga-Alosa for the infamous AK spring assault. Dana is a veteran to TGR and always delivers the goods but it was our first season filming with Angel and it was immediately apparent she fit right in. It is safe to say her aggressive, hard-charging style and laid-back attitude are a solid addition to the TGR team.
As spring set in our terrain decisions became much more aspect and elevation sensitive, but the longer days revealed new lines that hadn't seen light all winter. All in all another hugely successful AK trip!
