News: Burton Realigns Its Fami News: Burton Realigns Its Family Of Brands
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
BURLINGTON, VT - Burton Snowboards announced that its senior management team has elected to alter the structure of Burton owned brands to better position the company, its retail partners and stakeholders for the future. The current family of brands includes Analog, Gravis, RED, anon, Foursquare, Forum, Special Blend and Channel Islands. During a company-wide meeting at its headquarters in Vermont, Burton Founder and CEO Jake Burton explained the new structure and how it will allow Burton to focus on what it does best: make and support products that set the bar for snowboarding development and further progress the sport and lifestyle.
Specifically, Burton announced the following changes to its structure and subsidiaries. Over the next year, Analog will return to its roots of being a pure snowboarding brand based at its original home in Burlington, Vermont. Analog has a deep heritage in snowboarding from the day when Greg Dacyshyn (Burton Chief Creative Officer) and the late Jeffy Anderson (Team Rider) gave birth to the brand in Burlington, and as such, will revert back to being a winter-only brand. Burton’s Gravis brand will ultimately move its headquarters to Tokyo, Japan and moving forward will be solely distributed in Asian markets selling lifestyle shoes and bags. Gravis was established in 1998 as the company’s first independent lifestyle brand, and since then, Asia has been by far its most successful region. As a result, Gravis will now focus purely on this market and opportunity. Further, in a move that Burton has been planning for several years, the company will also start developing protective headwear under the anon brand name. Burton will continue to offer its RED helmets on a limited basis, but the bulk of helmet and optics product lines will be combined under the anon brand, which has become synonymous with quality riding accessories.
Also part of the restructure, Burton announced it will transition out of its Program brands (Foursquare, Forum and Special Blend), which were purchased in 2004 with the intent to keep snowboard companies in the hands of snowboarders. Burton has supported these brands for eight years and will continue to support them over the next year through warranty service, dealer support, marketing and inventory. The company will exit out of The Program brands in winter 2014, in order to better focus on and invest in Burton.
Finally, Channel Islands, which was acquired by Burton in 2006, will be unaffected by this brand realignment and will continue to design, develop and manufacture best-in-class surf hardgoods products in Carpinteria, California.
In addressing all of these changes, Jake Burton had this to say:
“Burton has experienced several years of income growth since the recession and paid out bonuses to employees over the last two years,” said Jake. “That said, the economy has a voice of its own that we all have to listen to, and the message is clear: do what you do best and focus purely on it. In our case, that means to narrow our focus to the sport and lifestyle that got us here – snowboarding. We will continue to support Channel Islands in its endeavor to make the best surfboards in the world and Gravis in its new home in Japan, but when you walk through the front door here in Burlington, Vermont, it will be all snowboarding and snowboarding lifestyle all the time – driven by the Burton, Analog and anon brands.”
Jake went on to share that one of the key factors that led senior management to these decisions includes the success of Burton’s entry into the apparel and bag/pack business on a year-round basis, which has grown significantly in all seasons. The message Burton has taken from the marketplace is that for long-term success, this is the direction that the company should be pursuing, along with its core hardgoods and outerwear business.
Increasing the company’s focus on Burton has also been demonstrated by recent significant investments in Burton’s headquarters and infrastructure. These include the acquisition of the building next door to its Burlington, Vermont headquarters where the company not only built Craig’s, a new 10,000-square-foot R&D and prototype facility, but also Area 13, a 6,000-square-foot Burton/anon/Analog wholesale showroom. Craig’s (named after the late Craig Kelly) is known as the most advanced and sophisticated snowboard prototype facility in the world where ideas are conceived, built and on-snow in less than 24 hours. Area 13 is Burton’s marquee showroom where retailers from all over the world can come to Vermont to see future product lines. Like today’s announcement, both of these examples demonstrate the company’s commitment to the long-term growth, progression and success of the Burton snowboard brands.
In closing, Jake went on to state the following:
“I take full responsibility for the decisions that led to the creation (or acquisitions) of these ancillary brands, and I similarly am the individual ultimately responsible for the decision to realign and focus more purely on what made this company from the start. Clearly, the most difficult aspect of this decision and transition is the people affected. The employees and team riders associated with these brands have poured their guts into making it happen. Their level of commitment has been extraordinary, and we will do everything we can to help support them through this transition. There is never a good time for moves like this, and we could have delayed the announcement, but it isn’t our style to perpetuate a myth. Clearly this transition will pose challenges along the way, but in the long run, everyone will see the results of our commitment to our core business.”
2012 Burton Restructure: Key Facts by Brand
ANALOG
Heritage
Following Burton’s outerwear legacy, Analog was created in 1999 as a more progressive, style-conscious outerwear collection led by a handful of top pros at the time, including Trevor Andrew, Jeffy Anderson and Gigi Ruf. Since then, Analog has continued to drive many of snowboarding’s outerwear style trends, and in 2003 Analog added a streetwear component to its line, followed by surf apparel, a surf team and an Analog skate platform.
Key Facts
• Burton has made the decision to ultimately transition out of Analog surf and skate apparel by next fall.
• Analog surf and skate apparel will be shipped through Spring/Summer ‘13, and will be marketed and supported.
• After the spring season, Burton will continue to design, develop and distribute Analog as a winter-only brand, operating out of Burton’s headquarters in Burlington, Vermont, with points of distribution around the world.
• The new Analog will only design and distribute Analog outerwear and tech apparel, called “ATF”, along with basics.
Team Update
The Analog snow team, made up of Danny Davis, Mikkel Bang and Zak Hale will continue on as Analog riders. Regarding the Analog surf and skate teams, we will be working with each team rider individually on an exit plan to transition them out of the brand.
GRAVIS
Heritage
Gravis was started by Burton in 1998, as the company’s first independent lifestyle brand. From the start, Gravis was focused on creating casual footwear, bags and softgoods built on an action sports lifestyle platform. Today the brand is still rooted in footwear, with the addition of a skate shoe collection and team, launched in August, 2008.
Key Facts
• Gravis will ultimately become an Asian-only brand, which will result in the wind down of the brand in North America, Southern Hemisphere and Europe.
• With this decision, Gravis’ headquarters will be re-located to Tokyo and run out of Japan, in order to best serve the Asian market where Gravis is the most established and where it has its most viable business.
• Gravis product will be shipped through Spring/Summer ’13 in all regions. Gravis will become an Asian-only brand in the fall of 2013.
Team Update
With this move to be a primarily lifestyle brand, the Gravis team will be restructured to accommodate the lifestyle market in Asia.
RED & ANON
Heritage
RED was started by Burton in 1996 as its first protection brand. Since then, RED has designed, developed and manufactured helmets and protective wear for pros and consumers alike. Anon was established as Burton’s eyewear brand in 2001 and focuses on goggles.
Key Facts
• Burton will be developing and manufacturing protective headwear (helmets) under the anon name. Anon has become synonymous with quality riding accessories, and it is a natural extension to add helmets to its mix.
• RED helmets will continue to be sold on a limited basis. Anon helmets will be launched for Winter 2014 for all channels.
Team Update
We will be working with each RED and anon team rider on an individual basis regarding this announcement.
THE PROGRAM (Foursquare, Forum, Special Blend)
Heritage
Burton purchased The Program brands in 2004 from Four Star Distribution. At that time, Burton felt an obligation (and an opportunity) to slow the trend of ski companies buying up snowboard brands. Consequently, when these companies went up for sale, Burton purchased them and they became ‘The Program’ brands for Burton.
Key Facts
• The intent from the beginning was to keep snowboard companies in the hands of snowboarders and keep these brands thriving. As the world’s leading snowboard company, Burton felt there would never be a better home for these three brands.
• But even under Burton’s wing, after 8 years, the businesses have failed to be viable. Consequently, Burton has realized it’s time to exit out of them, in order to better focus and invest in the Burton brand.
• Therefore, Burton will be transitioning out of Foursquare, Forum and Special Blend globally after this season.
• Current winter 2013 product will be supported over the next year, via warranty, dealer, marketing and inventory support
Team Update
We will be working with each team rider on an individual exit plan to transition them out of these brands.
CHANNEL ISLANDS
Heritage
Burton acquired Channel Islands Surfboards in June, 2006 after the founders of each company, Al Merrick and Jake Burton, forged an agreement over the fact they shared a similar mindset and passion for their respective sports. With their shared vision for putting the sports in the hands of the team athletes and shared philosophies on hardgoods product development, it was a very natural partnership.
Key Facts
• Channel Islands is not affected by the announcements today. Burton will continue to support the CI operation in Carpinteria, California, as usual.
• Burton is very happy with and committed to our relationship with Channel Islands.
Team Update
There will be no team riders affected, as there are no changes to the Channel Islands operating or marketing structure.
BURTON SNOWBOARDS
Burton will continue to do what it does best: make and support products that set the bar for snowboarding development. The most graphic change will be increased resources and investments made available to Burton to further progress our sport and lifestyle. Outside of our renewed focus, it will be business as usual. - Blog post

News: Iouri I-Pod Podlatchikov News: Iouri I-Pod Podlatchikov Wins Dew Tour Snowboard Halfpipe At Killington
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Killington, Vermont - It clearly wasn’t an easy day to be a Dew Tour judge after the battle that went down Sunday between Louie Vito and Iouri “I-Pod” Podlatchikov in the snowboard pipe finals at the Pantech Invitational in Killington, Vermont.
Vito was holding on to the lead after his first run with a score of 94.75 that set the bar high. There were some falls from a lot of the heavy hitters, nearly guaranteeing Vito the win.
But with I-Pod still in the mix, that quickly changed, and in the end, the win went to him for his score of 96.75 on his second run. The run started off with a Cab 7 crippler into back double 12 into front 10 to cab 10.
Iouri “I-Pod” Podlatchikov riding the iciest pipe he's ever ridden.“I’m really happy I put down my back 12,” I-Pod said. “It’s always really special to pull out that trick because it’s real dangerous in these conditions. This is the iciest pipe I’ve ever ridden.”
Vito fought back as the last rider to go, and like a true competitor he nearly challenged I-Pod's lead with an impeccable second run that improved upon his results. Vito’s run started off with a double crippler, into backside 5, frontside double 10, cab double 10 to finish with a frontside 10 to score a 95.25, but it wasn’t enough to unseat I-Pod.
“I hate losing no matter what,” Vito said. “I-Pod put down a run and I can’t control what he does. I just try to go out and put down a run, but now I need to step it up and make sure there’s no question.”Matt Ladley finished third after a solid showing. He’s coming off a wrist injury with recent surgery and 13 screws in place, but after his riding tonight it’s clear he’s back in top form.
Nearly all of the Frends crew made it to Finals, along with heavy hitters I-Pod and Vito. Another finalist worth noting was 14-year-old Kyle Mack, a former Gatorade Free Flow Tour winner that's making his way into the big leagues. He hails from Danny Davis' home mountain in Michigan.
Results:
1. Iouri Podladtchikov 96.75
2. Louie Vito 95.25
3. Matt Ladley 89.00
4. Luke Mitrani 87.50
5. Roger Kleivdal 83.25

Danny Davis, Elena Hight Ride Danny Davis, Elena Hight Ride Northstar California’s Superpipe

Description:
At this point most Lake Tahoe skiers would trade their pinky finger for a pow turn or two but that hasn’t stopped locals from getting their shred on where they can. Tahoe skiers with their face on a Northstar or Heavenly pass have had the best opportunity to get rad as these two Vail Resorts-owned ski areas have by far the best collection of man-made runs open.

The 500-foot long Shaun White Signature Superpipe at Northstar. Photo by Seth Lightcap.Northstar upped the snowmaking ante even further on Dec. 31 when they debuted not only the first halfpipe in Tahoe this winter, but the first 22-foot Superpipe in Tahoe history that will remain open to the public. Squaw opened a 22-footer to the public last spring for a hot minute, before shutting it down to let Red Bull skier Simon Dumont chop it up into his ‘cubed’ pipe.
The 500-foot long Shaun White Signature Superpipe at Northstar is the product of 700 hours of design and build work by the terrain park wizards at Snow Park Technologies and Northstar. It was built in a new halfpipe location for Northstar on the Cat’s Face trail accessed by the Vista Express chair. The out-of-the-way run on the far east side of the resort is ideal for it’s honorary designer, Shaun White, to hold private training sessions. White is spearheading the project thanks to a landmark deal he signed with Vail Resorts last summer that made Northstar his home mountain and primary training ground.

Two-time U.S. Olympian Elena Hight blasts a mean method at Northstar. Photo By Seth Lightcap.
While White has yet to come to Tahoe to ride his namesake superpipe, many other top halfpipe riders have. Heavyweight snowboarders such as Danny Davis, Hannah Teter and Elena Hight all trained in the pipe in it’s opening weeks.
“It was a tough job as we haven’t had any snow, so all the snow is super processed, but they did a really good job making this thing perfect,” said Davis about Northstar’s Superpipe. “It’s a damn good pipe.”
Hight echoed Davis’ thoughts on the new 22 foot walls.
“This is one of the best pipes I’ve ridden all year,” said Hight after a three hour non-stop session at Northstar. “Even despite the lack of snow, SPT and Northstar really pulled it together and came out with a good pipe.”
Northstar is no doubt pleased with the terrain feature, too, but there is room for improvement according to Northstar’s Terrain Park Manager Mike Schpani.
“Right now the pipe is sitting at just over 500 feet long,” said Schpani. “When we get a little natural snow we hope to increase the length by about 30-40 feet.”
Visiting and local skiers looking to slingshot out of Shaun’s superpipe should know that the pipe is open at 11 a.m. every day with the exception of days it’s closed for private training. If you do make it out for a superpipe sesh at Northstar, don’t forget to bring your helmet and sharpen your edges. The man-made walls are plenty fun and definitely rippable, but the fake snow is hard and unforgiving on all but the hottest wind-less January day. That all might change third week of January though, Tahoe is finally forecasted to get some snow.
For more info on Northstar’s Superpipe and temporary terrain feature closures check out the Northstar Terrain Park Report.

All four of today’s finals were taken in by a record-breaking crowd of approximately 14,000 – the highest one-day event total in the Winter Dew Tour’s two-year history.
Hight, 20, had a run that included a frontside 540, a backside 900 and a cab 720 to earn her a winning score of 92.50. Kaitlyn Farrington of Sun Valley, Idaho and Spain-native Queralt Castellet, both age 20, came in second and third, respectively. Farrington earned a score of 88.25, and Castellet followed behind with an 81.25.

Davis’ fellow Frends crew member, Jack Mitrani, joined him on the podium in the third-place position. The 21 year old from Mammoth Lakes, Calif., followed behind Fisher with a score of 84.75.

Shaun White and Kelly Clark wi Shaun White and Kelly Clark win Snowboarding Olympic qualifier, again.
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN, CA (Dec. 8)
Shaun White (Carlsbad, CA) and Kelly Clark (Mt. Snow, VT) aren't totally perfect… but they're pushing the boundary as each continued to dominate the Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix. The two finished first in qualifications at Mammoth Mountain on Friday while Wednesday's winner Danny Davis (Detroit, MI) also won his qualifying heat.
In sunny California winter weather, athlete after athlete continued to ride the wave of progression from Wednesday's halfpipe finals with all going bigger and trying harder to stake their claim on the chance at an Olympic spot as time ticks down.
Already nailing her athlete credential for the Games, Clark used the competition time to put miles on some tricks she's been keeping on the side.
"There's no better practice to do runs than in a contest setting. I have the luxury and the opportunity to do that now," Clark said. "The best practice is to do difficult and new runs in events so they feel more normal. Basically the hard runs become easier so when I get to the Olympics, my hardest runs now will be my easiest."
Fellow Olympic gold medalist Hannah Teter (Belmont, VT) followed Clark in second, and Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, CO) completed the trifecta of talent in third.
In her run Clark threw out some moves rarely, if ever seen before in her repertoire, all of which she said where fun.
"I've been doing this for so long that I have my plan and routine. Everything is mapped out with how to qualify. To have the luxury to switch it up and focus on the progression is huge," Clark said.
In the men's halfpipe Davis and White competed in different heats with White taking the top. All eyes are going to be on the men's halfpipe on Saturday as the crowd looks for what is poised to be "showdown part two" in the battle between the two greats after Davis ousted White from the throne on Wednesday.
And then there was young gun Dylan Bidez (Minturn, CO) took his riding to the next level, finishing third.
"I went into there just hoping to make finals and ending up third is a bonus," Bidez said. "It was probably my amplitude because I don't have a double in my bag of tricks. Just going big is what got me the third."
As for what lies ahead for the rookie, Bidez wants to up the ante.
"This makes me feel more confident going in to tomorrow. I'm going to change my run up a little bit and add some more difficulty to it, so that hopefully I can keep that top three position," Bidez said.
The Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix finals are Saturday at 11:00 a.m. PT. It will be the third of five Olympic qualification events for halfpipe. To see the scores live, visit live-timing.com.

Kelly Clark and Shaun White Do Kelly Clark and Shaun White Dominate the Qualifiers in the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN, CA (Dec. 5) - No, it's not déjà vu. Olympic gold medalists Kelly Clark (Mt. Snow, VT) and Shaun White (Carlsbad, CA) are just so consistent that for the second Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix in a row, they have both qualified first and will lead Wednesday's finals.
Under the sunny California sky, Clark was once again the queen of the halfpipe, landing frontside air, back 5, front 7 tail, cab 7, indie front 5, indie backside air, for her top of the pack status.
Backing Clark up in the standings was fellow gold medalist Hannah Teter (Belmont, VT). Teter noted her overall excitement to get qualifications out of the way after crashing in qualis at the Copper Grand Prix and not competing. And rounding things out for the dream team of women's halfpipe was Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, CO).
According to Clark, landing a qualifying run sets her up perfectly for finals.
"It's always encouraging being able to make it to the finals having done so well. Being able to be consistent in the qualifiers is a great way to head in to the finals," Clark said. "I'm looking for some consistent results, and it should set me up for a fun week."
Clark was also stoked to be at Mammoth Mountain, where her friends are able to see her competing.
"It's great being at Mammoth. A lot of my friends are able to come up and support me and I have a high value for that, so I really enjoy it," said Clark.
In the ultra-competitive men's halfpipe field, athletes again double corked their way to the tops of heats, led by none other than the great White whose second run of the day, a frontside air, backside 540, frontside double cork 10, cab double cork 10, frontside 7, cab 10, was the top of the charts for the men.
But the innovative trick didn't stop with White's board as Greg Bretz (Mammoth Lakes, CA) showed some love for the home crowd, finishing first in his heat and second overall for the day with an air, back 9, front 10, cab 10, front double cork 10.
For Bretz, the run was a step forward in what he hopes will be a level of consistency for him.
"It feels good. I'm trying to work on my consistency. Louie [Vito, Sandy, UT] and Shaun are two of the most consistent guys in our sport and I can't watch them win anymore," Bretz said. "I'm just going to try to come from behind and blind them. I'm stoked to be at home shredding. I'm just doing my thing and having fun."
Canada's Jeff Bachelor followed Bretz in third and Vito finished fourth.
The Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix continues Wednesday with men's and women's halfpipe finals at 1 p.m. MT, the second of five Olympic qualifiers. While the Olympic Team will not be named until after the final event Jan. 23, White and Clark will virtually assure themselves a spot if they pickup a second win.

This is the second year for the Winter Dew Tour, which debuted last December, and at the end of the three stops this year there will be a $1.5 million prize purse based on individual event performance and year-end standings. Olympic Snowboarder Danny Davi Olympic Snowboarder Danny Davis Wins Dew Tour halfpipe competition
- From: media-75233

Description:
BRECKENRIDGE, CO (Dec. 19) – Danny Davis (Detroit, MI) took top honors in the Dew Tour halfpipe competition, winning in Breckenridge. He was joined on top of the podium in the women's competition by Queralt Castellet of Spain.
Davis was the king of the pipe, finishing in first, and was followed by Iouri Podladtchikov of Switzerland in second and JJ Thomas (Golden, CO) in third.
"Danny captured the win today with a super progressive run that featured two double cork 1080s followed switch backside rodeo at the end of his run" said U.S. Snowboarding Halfpipe Head Coach Mike Jankowski. "It's great to have another U.S. rider bring the double cork to the competition scene as we head into the Mammoth Grand Prix"
Castellet led the women today with Sarah Conrad of Nova Scotia shredding her way to second and Kjersti Buass Oestgaard of Norway swiped third. U.S. Snowboarding's Kelly Marren (Hillsborough, CA) finished fourth.
Top riders from around the world battled each other and the elements to earn their place on the podium. Riders looked to gain momentum and confidence as they head into the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix at Mammoth Mountain, CA in January.

Shaun White and Louie Vito lea Shaun White and Louie Vito lead men's olympic halfpipe qualifier
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
COPPER MOUNTAIN, CO (Dec. 11) - The back-to-back double corks were heating things up by the end of the day at Copper Mountain as Shaun White (Carlsbad, CA) and Louie Vito (Sandy, UT) went one and two in both their heat and the overall qualifications for the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix.
White, in classic White fashion, came in from behind for the number one spot with some double doubles after sitting second to Vito at the finish of the first run.
But, like the dancing man said, he and White are treating it all like practice and pushing the boundaries where they can. Case in point - Vito's back-to-back doubles. It was a first for him to throw the move in any form of competition.
"I've got a few different spins I'm going to mix up, but I just want to keep it consistent. I was already in, which was all I cared about," Vito said. "I think Shaun felt the same way. It's always practice and you've just got to step it up, take it up another notch and just get ready for tomorrow."

As Elton John's Tiny Dancer echoed off the halfpipe walls, Vito cruised through the air landing his tricks in an almost too easy fashion. He explained that, after the type of training he's gone through this summer, the pipe is a comfortable place to be.
"I'm pretty consistent. I've just got to do it when it counts and I landed it when it counted today," Vito said. "Snowboarding is a lot less pressure and a lot easier for me than dancing was, so that made it a lot easier today."
Mammoth rider Greg Bretz (Mammoth, CA) threw his name in the hat of riders to watch, finishing third.
"Finishing third in my heat, I'm pretty stoked, actually," Bretz said. "I couldn't ask for anything better. The progression of snowboarding is through the roof these days. You've just got to keep up and have fun doing it."
The finals of the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix at Copper Mountain go down Saturday. Fans can check out ussnowboarding.com, facebook.com/ussnowboarding, and twitter.com/ussnowboarding for info.
