Rahlves' Banzai Tour Finishes Rahlves' Banzai Tour Finishes Strong

Description:
Truckee, Calif. (March 12, 2013) –Throughout the past two months, skiers, snowboarders and spectators alike have descended upon the Tahoe area to compete in and watch the rowdiest race in the Sierra. Rahlves’ Banzai Tour brought in tough competition from across the country to four renown Lake Tahoe resorts for the ultimate test of ski and riding skills. The tour also entertained guests with quintessential pre and après ski parties, exciting results, and photo finishes.
Starting at Kirkwood Mountain Resort, athletes were challenged by “The Wall,” which proved to be one of the most challenging races to date, as competitors had to drop into an intimidating 20 ft. vertical wall right out of the gate. For the second tour stop hosted at Alpine Meadows, athletes were tested with fast and rough terrain, while spectators were entertained with the closest and most dramatic photo finish in Banzai history. With warm spring-like weather on the first day of the Squaw Valley tour stop, and formidable conditions on Sunday, Squaw tested the resilience of Rahlves’ Banzai Tour, as well as the dedication of tour participants. However, with fresh snow in the forecast, Rahlves’ Banzai Tour rallied for the final tour stop at Sugar Bowl Resort, home of the original Silver Belt Banzai.
The Sugar Bowl Final and Super Final concluded the tour in true Banzai style, complete with strong competition paired with music, barbecue, libations and the beloved Banzai atmosphere of camaraderie and healthy competition. Banzai veterans Johnny Bochenek, Kyle Coxon and John Lange took the top spots for men’s skiing during the Silver Belt, which also qualified Lange as the final athlete to compete in the Super Final. Men’s snowboarded Chelone Miller raced to first in the Silver Belt, while women’s snowboarder Kiana Putman and women’s skier Shannon Rahlves both secured the top spot in their respective categories. The men’s Super Final provided drama and a $5,000 paycheck to Salt Lake City skier Kyle Coxon. “The Sugar Bowl final and Super Final were awesome,” said Daron Rahlves. “It was a beautiful day, fans lined the course and the athletes delivered a great show. I wanted to be skiing in the Super Final, but instead was an excited fan like the rest watching and stoked for Kyle Coxon taking home the 5 grand. I will be back in the Super Final next year so those boys better start training now ha, ha. I’m so grateful to my wife and kids for the endless support, all the sponsors, the fans and athletes for making this year’s tour the best yet. ”

For those who are curious about the tour’s name, Banzai is a Japanese term expressed as an exuberant cheer meaning, “Long Life!” or “Hurray!” An apt name for a high-spirited downhill ski and snowboard competition, the Silver Belt Race first took place in the 1940s at Sugar Bowl Ski Resort and was re-introduced with the head-to-head action by Daron Rahlves and Sugar Bowl in 2009. The race continued with one event for another year, and then Rahlves decided to take the show on the road, officially launching Rahlves’ Banzai Tour and expanding to stops at four of Lake Tahoe's premier resorts.
The Rahlves Banzai tour is presented by Bank of The West. The Rahlves Banzai Tour is also supported by sponsors such as Red Bull, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Contour, CEP “intelligent sportswear”, North Lake Tahoe Chamber/VCB/Resort Association, Spyder, Atomic, Start Haus Ski Shop, Wend Wax, COAL, SVE/BOSE, The Bar Effect, World Cup Supply, Jagermeister, Snow Fest, Sports Insurance, Technical Equipment Cleaners, Resort at Squaw Creek, ZINKA, 101.5 Truckee Tahoe Radio, Tahoe TV, POWDER Mag, High Fives Foundation and CRUX Events, thereby creating an alluring $80,000 prize purse. - From: TetonGravityResearch

Description:
Truckee, Calif. –Rahlves’ Banzai Tour is back, showcasing racing in its purest form of four at a time going head-to-head over natural terrain in ski and boarder-cross style action. The 2013 dates for this annual favorite have been announced, so mark your calendars and get ready to compete in the ultimate test on the mountain. With tour stops, pre and après parties spanning four weekends from Feb. 2nd through Mar. 10th at Kirkwood Mountain Resort, Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley and Sugar Bowl Resort, the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour is sure to be a showstopper.
“There is no other race like this in the world,” said Rahlves. “Last year's low tide conditions forced new routes down each venue and produced exciting competition and a great show for spectators. I was impressed with the competitors attitude and level of commitment. What's so unique about this race is every day ripper’s line up against pro level athletes and have a shot at the title of Rahlves' Banzai Champ. It's a competition among competitors, but ultimately it's against the mountain.”
When the gate drops, it's on as four competitors battle it out for the holeshot and an early lead. Tactics, skill, strength and calculated risk are put to the test attacking terrain and skied out snow conditions found at any resort off the groomed runs. Watching the battle is simply awe-inspiring and commands respect.
The final stop on the tour at Sugar Bowl Resort, where the race originated, will feature the “Super Final” in which former World Champion, 12-time World Cup winner, X-Games Gold Medalist and four-time Olympic skier, and Sugar Bowl Resort Ambassador Daron Rahlves will race against the four men’s skiing division winners from each stop on this year’s tour. This grand finale will not disappoint, as it provides the only opportunity during the tour to witness Rahlves putting his technical skills and all out effort to the test against the crowned winners of the tour who will be vying to beat Rahlves and to take home the title of “Banzai Master” with a cash prize of $10,000; winner takes all.
Friday night before each tour stop, competing athletes, sponsors, media and special guests are invited to the event kick-off, “Rahlves' Banzai Welcome Party”. The location will be announced closer to the event dates. On Saturday after the solo qualifying timed runs to seed Sunday's Finals and heats of four, all competing athletes, sponsors, media and fans are invited to celebrate all things Banzai at the 3-6pm “Rahlves' Banzai Après Party” thrown by High Fives Foundation, a Truckee, CA based non-profit organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for athletes who have suffered a life-altering injury while pursuing their dream in the winter action sports community. A portion of the proceeds from Sierra Nevada beers purchased throughout the evening and raffle prizes will be donated to High Fives.
Competitors aged 18 and up are encouraged to start polishing up on their schussing big mountain skills and get ready to enter the men’s and women’s ski and snowboard divisions for the tour.
Make plans to catch the high-speed action at each tour stop including:
• Kirkwood Mountain Resort Feb. 2-3, 2013
• Alpine Meadows Feb. 9-10, 2013
• Squaw Valley Mar. 2-3, 2013
• Sugar Bowl Resort Mar. 9-10, 2013

Description:
The second stop of Daron Rahlves’ four-stop Banzai Tour ski and snowboard race went off at Alpine Meadows Feb. 23-24. With two more stops in the next two weeks scheduled at Sugar Bowl and Squaw Valley USA, competition is ramping up.
“We had an insane course, great conditions, and athletes who put it all on the line,” Daron Rahlves said of the event at Alpine Meadows.
Last Friday, competitors and spectators alike enjoyed the sunny spring-like weather and the exciting new course layout. Some spectacular crashes along with neck-and-neck finishes kept the excitement level pinned at 11.
Former U.S. freestyle team member Shelly Robertson proved that you don’t have to be a racer to win.
“I’ve done a few of these and finished second every time,” Robertson said with a smile. “It’s nice to finally get the win.”
Others had a different story to tell. Last year’s overall men’s snowboard champion, Sylvain Duclos, took fifth at Alpine but was stoked nonetheless.
“Anything can happen,” Duclos said. “It’s such a long course. This is a fun event. I wish there were more like this.”
Originally scheduled for January, the race was postponed due to lack of snow. But recent precipitation and a rerouted course made the event possible.
Two weeks ago, Kirkwood Mountain Resort played host to the first Rahlves’ Banzai event of the season. The race went well despite the low-tide conditions.
“This year has been a challenge,” Rahlves said. “We’ve had to redo the whole thing. The Kirkwood event was probably better because of it. I think we found the course that I had dreamed of. We were forced to go there.”
A banzai racer crosses the finish line at Alpine Meadows. Photo by Jeremy Benson.Rahlves’ Banzai Tour was started by four-time Olympian turned big-mountain skiing phenomenon, Daron Rahlves. Last winter, Rahlves created the series based on the Silver Belt race that took place at Sugar Bowl in the 1940s, it’s like a skiercross event mixed with big mountain freeriding.
“Rahlves' Banzai is ski and snowboard racing in its purest form, with four at a time going head to head over natural terrain,” Rahlves said.
Anyone can enter. The fastest person wins.
In 2011 the series had three stops, Alpine Meadows, Kirkwood, and Sugar Bowl. For 2012, the popular and successful series added Squaw Valley as a fourth tour stop. The intense head-to-head racing action will be featured on NBC in a show produced by Teton Gravity Research. The show will air March 27 as part of Red Bull’s Signature Series.
“I’m honored to have the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour as part of this amazing series and give the due respect to the athletes that compete,” Rahlves said.
Each event has a prize purse of $15,000 split between the men’s and women’s ski and snowboard divisions. An additional $10,000 is up for grabs in winner-take-all Super Final at Sugar Bowl, when Rahlves takes on the men’s ski winners from all four tour stops. That is, if anyone can beat him.
Qualifying takes place on Day 1 when racers attack the course alone in time-trial fashion. The fastest qualifiers move on to Day 2, when they race head-to-head, four at a time, down the course’s challenging natural terrain. The top two racers advance from each heat until the competition is whittled down to the top four, who race for Banzai glory and money.
Want to compete? Go online to www.rahlvesbanzai.com to register, watch videos, or check results. Want to watch? Come out to Squaw Valley or Sugar Bowl and catch the action for yourself, or watch it on NBC on March 27.

News: Rahlves, McConkey & Plak News: Rahlves, McConkey & Plake To Join U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
April 1, 2011
Sun Valley, Idaho (US Ski Team) – In a competitive career spanning two decades, Daron Rahlves has his share of medals and trophies. A super G World Championship in 2001. Hahnenkamm champion in 2004. Two medals at 2005 Worlds. 12 World Cup victories. The 2008 X Games skicross gold. Saturday, Rahlves will be honored with induction into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Sun Valley. But does it mean he's retired? Not on your life!
Pointing his Atomic skis downhill at 85 mph was just one phase of Rahlves' career. Ski racer? Yes. But, first and foremost, a skier.
"I don’t want people to look back on my history and say 'man that guy was a good ski racer,' said Rahlves. "I want people to know me as a skier who loves skiing. Staying active and influential in the ski world is really important to me."
It's fitting that among the group of six Hall of Fame inductees are two more of skiing's greatest names – Glen Plake and the late Shane McConkey. Plake is a former freestyle skier turned skiing ambassador whose trademark Mohawk hairdo is known to every skier young and old. McConkey was one of the sport's most daring skiers, literally defining a generation of extreme skiers before his tragic death in a 2008 skiing accident.
"Everyone grew up watching Glen Plake," said Rahlves. "For the last 20 years, he's been the most iconic guy in the ski world. He's done a lot for our sport in terms of recognition. It helps to have a two-foot Mohawk. But it's also about his smile and that signature cackle."
Rahlves and Plake caught up at a ski event earlier this winter and joked about their induction. "He said he didn't think he was going to accept it because he's not done skiing," laughed Rahlves. "I told him you don't have to hang it up to be in the Hall. Besides Plake's never going to hang it up and neither will I."
Plake, McConkey and Rahlves all grew up skiing Tahoe. Each drew inspiration from the others. "Shane, he's done some amazing things," said Rahlves. "Before my first World Cup win, I was skiing with Shane in Tahoe the day before I left for Norway. He opened my eyes to a whole new way of being creative on the mountain. I was always into going fast and doing bigger lines. But he was just really technical and always having fun. I have to attribute some of the feeling I have for that win in Norway to Shane. After ripping with him, I just took that fun into ski racing."
That March, 2000 weekend in Norway, , Rahlves swept to a pair of wins on the same course that brought Tommy Moe Olympic gold fame six years earlier in Kvitfjell.
"Daron had a passion for skiing that was unlike any other World Cup racer," said former U.S. Ski Team Coach Phil McNichol, who was with Rahlves during the pinnacle of his racing career. "A lot comes from his lineage of being a Tahoe skier growing up with Glen and Shane. He just had this intense passion whether skiing the Mousefalle or skipping a rest day to hit some powder."
McNichols shared a story of the U.S. Championship downhill at Squaw Valley being canceled due to new snow. "Daron was out there inspecting in downhill skis with racing bindings when it was called. He didn't waste a minute getting to the powder – didn't even take time to change skis. He caught massive air off this jump, the skis didn't release and he threw out his hip."
Rahlves still puts fun into skiing every day. While he's no longer pulling on a bib and arcing turns through World Cup race courses, he's into his sport every day of the year. A quick visit to DaronRahlves.com has "D" talking lines from a heli over an Alaskan ridgeline, highlights from his signature Rahlves' Banzai Tour, pix from the Pain McSchlonkey Chinese Downhill and sick tricks from the Red Bull Cold Rush Cliffs.
"It's all about waking up at the crack of dawn, seeing clear blue skies and rallying out there," said Rahlves as his eyes stayed transfixed on the pillows of snow cascading down the spines of a steep ridgeline near Haines, Alaska.
Today, from his home base in Truckee, CA where he lives with wife Michelle and their three-and-a-half-year old twins, Rahlves globetrots to powder fields and innovative ski events. It's a big change from the five-month grind of the World Cup circuit where for a decade he was best in the world.
An episode of last season's Almost Live featuring Daron
In 2001 at St. Anton, Austria, Rahlves literally silenced the crowd of 25,000+ Austrians with his unprecedented win in the World Championship super G. It was an event that Austria totally owned. Until that day.
Three years later, after he had won over many Austrian fans, he did the unthinkable. He won the fabled Hahnenkamm. From 2000 to 2006, Rahlves won a dozen World Cups. He took three wins in Kvitfjell plus wins on the classic courses in Kitzbuehel, Bormio and Wengen. But winning at home in Beaver Creek on the Birds of Prey – well, that was very special!
"Every win was cool, but the highlights are definitely the first World Championship, Kitzbuehel, Wengen and especially Beaver Creek," he reminisced. "Birds of Prey is just a big deal for me. I skied so many years there and then it was time to just start winning on home turf. To get two wins there and also be on the podium a number of times is such a good feeling."
Not only did Rahlves dominate on the Birds of Prey, he did so together with teammate Bode Miller. Over four Decembers from 2003-2006, Rahlves or Miller won every year, often with the other right behind in second place. It was the most dominating period in U.S. men's downhill history.
"That was a very special time in history," said McNichol. "When we walked into Kitz or Beaver Creek, we did it with our heads held high. We were proud!"
"There's a special feeling that goes along with winning a big event in Europe," said Rahlves. "Whether it's a World Championship or Kitz or the Lauberhorn, they all carry a magic that can't be described.
"But I'm also really proud of what I've been able to do after my ski racing career - winning the X Games for skicross, going to the Olympics in a completely different sport."
Rahlves is a part of one of the most prestigious classes in Hall of Fame history. In addition to Plake and McConkey, he is joined by the legendary ski racer Bobby Cochran, Paralympic medalist Muffy Davis and Sun Valley and Snowbasin resort owner Earl Holding. The six will be honored Saturday evening at the Sun Valley Inn.
The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame is located in Ishpeming, MI – the birthplace of organized skiing in America in 1905. The Hall has recognized nearly 400 athletes and sport builders since 1956. The annual induction rotates around to America's greatest resorts, including Sun Valley which is celebrating its 75th anniversary.
"This is definitely a big honor and something I'm proud of," said Rahlves. "But to be among this list of names makes it even more special."

Nuking winds lowered the start for The Eagle Bowl Banzai taking out the GNAR upper pitch off The Wall. A lower bush league start with cattle fence stakes and a voice command start brought back the grass roots feeling of my first thoughts of what the Banzai is all about. The shortened course made for close battles to the finish line. It's hard for me to sit back and watch all the fun these guys are having, but I do get some skiing in and run a Contour GPS to capture the action for all of you. In the Men's Ski Final it came down to Alpine winner Markus Caston and 4th place Jesse Maddex against new comers Craig Garbiel and John Bocheneck. If Jesse stayed on his feet (sorry..ha,ha,ha can't help it) out of the start I might have had a better view of the Markus and Craig scuffle. I did get a glimpse of the explosion. It was a scrap to the finish for Craig who came in 2nd behind John. Jesse's never give up approach landed him in third and is now ranked 2nd in Overall Rahlves' Banzai Tour points and a chance at $3,500 for the overall title. Caston leads the tour going into the final round at Sugar Bowl March 12-13.1st Bocheneck $2000, a Contour GPS and Suunto CORE - 2nd Craig Garbiel $1000 and Giro Revolver helmet - 3rd Jesse Maddex $750 and Giro Station goggle - 4th Markus Caston $500 and Wend Wax. The Men's Snowboard overall race is the tighest with a tie for 1st. Jayson Hale winner from Kirkwood and Sylvain Duclos our Alpine winner are just 10 points ahead of Matt Clark. If Matt wins the Silver Belt Banzai he will take the overall and $3,000. Women's Ski also has a tie for 1st. My sister Shannon and Shelly Robertson are at the top with 160 points fighting for $2,500. Women's Snowboard Marge Cossettini and Alison Martin tie for 1st at 100 points each. The 3rd and final round will have plenty of intensity for the win and overall titles. To top it off I'll be taking on Markus Caston, John Bocheneck and the winner from the Silver Belt Banzai in one final run for $10,000 winner takes all. www.rahlvesbanzai.com

Description:
“RAHLVES’ BANZAI TOUR 2011” COMBINES BIG MOUNTAIN, DOWNHILL AND SKI/BOARDER-CROSS DISCIPLINES FOR A THREE-RESORT TOUR OF TAHOE AND A RACE FOR $50,000 IN CASH
(Lake Tahoe, CA) – Daron Rahlves, four-time Olympian, World Champion and current Sugar Bowl Ski Ambassador, has announced plans for a new multi-resort race series this winter, with stops at Alpine Meadows, Kirkwood and Sugar Bowl. Mixing disciplines of big mountain freeriding, downhill racing and ski & boarder cross strategy, the “Banzai” format, with roots stemming from the original Silver Belt Banzai at Sugar Bowl, puts four racers at a time blasting out of a ski-cross start gate feature, maneuvering through strategically-placed gates on an all-natural big-mountain course, navigating natural terrain features as well as fellow racers, with the limited rules to finish fast enough to place in the top two slots and advance to the next round. A grass-roots flashback to the days of simply racing your friends to the bottom of the hill, Rahlves, the most decorated men’s downhiller in U.S. history, says that while the racing is real, the focus of the Banzai is on having fun. “With so many competitions in skiing being of such a serious nature, the Banzai Tour invites skiers and riders to come out, get in the gate and point it, still maintaining a high level of racing of course, but also having a great time and enjoying the festive atmosphere that the Banzai is really all about.” Open to anyone 18 years or older willing to race, historically the Silver Belt Banzai at Sugar Bowl has seen a mix of high-level athletes, racing enthusiasts and average-Joe and average-Jill’s just looking to come out for a good time on the mountain. With reasonable entry fees of $100 that includes a lift ticket, and a $50,000 overall prize purse, the Rahlves Banzai Tour should see over 100 athletes racing at each tour stop. And complemented nicely with vendor village exhibit areas, numerous spectator viewing spots, finish line BBQ’s and post-race parties complete with live music and dj’s, the event draws more than just competitors.
The three Tahoe mountains involved are perfect venues for a race of this style, offering big mountain terrain with impressive steeps, compelling routes to navigate and big snowfall totals every season. Each race boasts a $10,000 purse, inviting Men and Women Ski and Snow Board divisions to compete, with an additional $10,000 given out to the overall Tour winners. And while Rahlves will act as the Banzai tour ambassador, in a compelling twist to the overall series, Rahlves himself will not race in any of the three tour stops. Rather, all three Men’s Skier division winners from each event will earn the right to race Rahlves in a final day, one-shot, winner-take-all, $10,000 mad-dash “Banzai Super Final”, sure to be a crowd pleaser.
Dates for the 2011 Rahlves’ Banzai Tour are:
Alpine Meadows January 22nd and 23rd
