News: Keri Herman and James Wo News: Keri Herman and James Woods Win Historic Olympic Slopestyle Qualifier
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
USHUAIA, Argentina – U.S. Freeskiing's Keri Herman (Breckenridge, CO) placed a check mark on history Friday, Sept. 7 with an FIS World Cup slopestyle skiing victory during the first 2014 Olympic Winter Games qualifying event. Great Britain’s James Woods took the win for the men. The top American male was McRae Williams (Salt Lake City) in eighth.
An X Games silver medalist, Herman won by a huge six-point margin to mark her first podium since 2011. Herman’s winning run: clean double kink rail, frontside 270, switch cork 720 bro-kang grab, switch 540, 360 safety grab, to a cork 540 mute grab.
Switzerland’s Eveline Bhend took second and Canadian Dara Howell came in third.
“This feels amazing and almost surreal. It hasn’t quite clicked in yet because I am so far away from home,” Keri Herman said. “It’s been a great week in Argentina and I had some time to figure out what I needed to do to win and I did it.”
The next chance for athletes to qualify will be Jan. 11, 2013 during the Visa U.S. Freeskiing Grand Prix at Copper Mountain, CO – part of the winter-long Sprint U.S. Grand Prix series.
Slopestyle and halfpipe skiing will make their debut at the 2014 Olympic program in Sochi, Russia. The Olympic qualifying period provides individual athletes with opportunity to achieve required international ranking in order to be eligible for Olympic selection and helps the USA earn the maximum number of nation's quota spots.

The Big Air competition in the Tyrol, Austria, resort of Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis drew countless spectators to watch the world’s best female freeskiers throw down on the perfectly shaped jump feature known as the Chateaux. All week the invited Queens had multiple photo and film sessions on the unique construction, building up to this big day. On Friday an extra five girls were invited to practice on the jump and join the invited Queens for the Big Air competition on Saturday.
The sun was out, the jump was yet again perfectly shaped thanks to the dedicated shapers of the legendary Schneestern crew, and the girls were motivated to progress the sport yet again. The format of the Suzuki NINE QUEENS big air competition was decided by the competitors and it started with a one hour and fifteen minute jam session with overall impression deciding the eight finalists.
These would then had five jumps each to impress the judges with their two best tricks. The jam session saw hugely diverse tricks being thrown: switch 720s, cork 900s, rodeos and even a double frontflip attempt kept the crowd cheering and gave the judges a tough job deciding the finalists.
After a short lunch break, the eight finalists made their way to the top of the run-in for their five final hits on the jump. The atmosphere at the top was incredible, the girls all wore big smiles and there was no pressure, just a unanimous stoke on being able to session such an awesome kicker.
All the girls put down some really smooth and technical tricks, but when all was said and done it was Ashley Battersby from the USA that took home first place. Ashley landed her first ever switch 1080, styling it out with a solid mute grab and stomping the landing. “I tried the switch 1080 last year at NINE QUEENS for the first time and wasn’t quite able to land it. So I am so stoked to have finally landed it this year.”
Ashley said, “It has been such a good event and its been so much fun being able to session this perfect jump with so many good skiers”. In second place was Eveline Bhend who surprised everyone by stomping the first ever misty flip 900 landed by a woman, grabbing a solid mute grab for extra measure. In third place was Kaya Turski, who also threw a massive switch 1080.
It was truly epic to behold all the girls push themselves and the sport to a new level, smiling and laughing with each other the whole time. Yet again history was written at the Suzuki NINE QUEENS and one can be sure that next years Big Air contest will be just as progressive and inspiring for the sport. Congratulations to all the girls, we can’t wait for next year! - Blog post

News: Nine Queens Women's Free News: Nine Queens Women's Freeskiing Event In Full Swing - Video From Day 1 & 2
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
The worlds best female freeskiers have been the honorable guests at the Tiyrol, Austria, ski resort of Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis since last Sunday, with the goal of showing off their phenomenal skills on the pristine jump of the Suzuki NINE QUEENS.
Adverse weather conditions hampered the start slightly, meanwhile however, the weather has cooperated and the event is now in full swing. The Suzuki NINE QUEENS is exceeding all expectations, the unbelievable sessions proving it to be one of the most progressive events in women’s freeskiing yet again.
The first big highlight occurred on Wednesday when the familiar sound of thudding rotors of the helicopter got the athlete’s, filmer’s and photographer’s hearts beating a little harder. Flying cameras filmed the athletes for two hours from multiple unique angles, giving the ground photographers a priceless additional subject for their photos.
Ashley Battersby.
Thursday was just as spectacular, with all the athletes and media getting up in the early hours of the morning to shoot action on the “Chateaux” for sunrise. Then, after a well deserved rest during the day, everyone went up the mountain again for a magical sunset and night shooting. O’Neill Team Rider and host of the event Virginie Faivre, who sadly was unable to ski herself due to injury was still absolutely stoked: “Our Chateaux looked even more fabulous under the floodlights than it does during the day. It was just magical. I didn’t think it could go any better than last year, but it seems that the Suzuki NINE QUEENS has no limits!“The level of riding on the perfectly shaped jump has been incredibly high. Völkl Marker Freeski Team members Emma Dahlström and Emilia Wint threw cleanly grabbed Cork 720s, superstar Kaya Turski displayed some silky smooth style, while Anna Segal stomped some smooth flat 360s and Eveline Bhend sent huge Flat 540s deep into the landing.
Ashley Battersby brought everyone to their feet with a textbook switch 900. Local hero Eva Patscheider, who didn’t join the fun due to an injury couldn’t miss watching the spectacular action: “You can see that the girls feel really comfortable on the jump. Last year they spent a lot of time getting used to the larger dimensions, but this time it looks completely natural for them. I can’t wait to ride with the girls again next year!“
The big finale will go down this Saturday with the Big Air contest open to spectators, followed by a prize giving, photo awards and raging afterparty presented by Sweet Protection and downdays.eu at the Hexenalm in Fiss.

News: Nine Queens Women's Free News: Nine Queens Women's Freeskiing Event Kicks Off In Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis Austria
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
The worlds best female freeskiers met up in the Austrian Alps on Sunday for the second annual Suzuki NINE QUEENS, a next-level women’s freeski event. Virginie Faivre of the O’Neill International Team sent out the invitations and everyone gladly accepted the call to Serfaus, Fiss, Ladis including: Kaya Turski, who had just won another impressive X Games Gold medal, Anna Segal, Emilia Wint, Ashley Battersby and Keri Herman, all of whom had also made the long trip from the European X Games. The biggest names in the European scene also joined them including Caja Schöpf, Eveline Bhend and many more.
The event started on Sunday evening with a classy welcome dinner at the Community Hall in Ladis. In the awe-inspiring ancient basement, the event organizer Nico Zacek officially welcomed the Queens and set out a rough plan for the upcoming week. All the best photos of the previous year hung on the walls, inspiring the QUEENS, who each received a Baby-G watch as a small welcoming present. The atmosphere couldn’t have been better and one could feel the excited anticipation for the upcoming kicker session.
However the weather gods did not feel like accommodating the queen’s anticipation much, on Monday. High snowfall and an impenetrable fog made even an inspection of the jump impossible. Disregarding the adverse conditions, all the ladies made sure to complete a sightseeing tour of the “Chateaux”, as the impressive jump had been named. Emma Dahlström and Julie Bénard of the Marker Völkl International Freeski Team even sessioned the rails at the Chateaux for a little while.
The first big day of the event was on Tuesday, when the clouds parted and revealed the impressive “Chateaux” with a fresh coat of white snow to brighten the day. The shapers of the world renown Schneestern Crew first needed a few hours to clear the snow around the complex structure and bring the jump back into top form. The Queens finally got to hit the jump just before lunch, however mother nature still wanted to meddle a little with the play of things: a strong and variable wind made things a little too dangerous to continue the session. When almost all hope had been lost, the wind subsided and the session on Virginie Faivres’ Chateaux was able start proper.
The Queens proved quickly why they are considered the best in the world, needing only a few warm up jumps before their styled out tricks started to draw yelps of joy from filmers and photographer alike. Yet the media contingent was not alone in their exhilaration, “The Jump is just perfect!” said Australian Anna Segal, “It is without a doubt one of the best kickers I have ever skied”. With the warm light of the dying sun as a backdrop it was truly a breathtaking session to behold.
A number of special photo and film shoots are still planned until the big day, however, one will have to wait a little longer to see the finished products that the small number of invited camera professionals will present from these epic sessions. With the public Big Air contest, the release of the photos and videos, as well as the afterparty on Saturday, it is going to be a very exciting week!

News: Tom Wallisch, Kaya Tursk News: Tom Wallisch, Kaya Turski Win Dew Tour Slopestyle Skiing At Killington
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Killington, Vermont - There was no room for error among the field of 14 freeskiers if the guys had any chance of cracking into the top three at Sunday's Pantech Invitational freeski slope Finals. It seemed like the win was in the bag for Bobby Brown, after he scored a 93.00 in his first run with his signature style; smooth and solid on the rail sections and huge and blasting over the three jumps. He stomped his landings and his score held on straight through until the last guy to drop in for second runs.
If the last to drop had been anyone other than Tom Wallisch, there may have been no contest. But Wallish was coming off a win at last month’s Dew Tour in Breckenridge, where he came back in his second run to take the title. In true Wallisch style, he did it again here in Killington. Not only did he bump Brown into second, he did it by scoring the highest ever in Winter Dew Tour freeski history with a 95.25.

Tom Wallisch competes in the Dew Tour on Sunday at Killington."I was just trying to convince myself that I’m a second-run skier," Wallisch said. "So far every major contest win I’ve had has been second run. Even Euro X Games two season’s ago, we had three runs, but my brain just likes to do a good second run. So I was just trying to convince myself that was how it was going to go, get a good mindset, just picture myself at the bottom and just let my body do the work."
His run started with a switch lip blind 2 on the top down rail, into a right foot forward front up blind 4 on the flat down, into a switch lip front 4 on the cannon rail. He hit the jumps with a left double cork 1260 mute to switch left double cork 1080 japan, to switch right double cork 1080 japan.

Bobby Brown boosting during the slopestyle. It had to be a letdown for Brown, who wasn’t able to increase his initial lead on his second run after falling on the last hit, but he didn’t let it show.
“I’m just stoked on how I did, obviously Tom just threw an amazing run and I’m stoked for him,” Brown said. “Now I’m just looking forward to X Games next week.”
Seventeen-year-old Nick Goepper knocked Sammy Carlson off the podium into fourth after he finished his final run, so the competition was heated straight through to the last minute.
Wallisch is now in the overall lead heading in to next month’s finals in Snowbasin, where Brown will be fighting back as the defending Dew Cup champ.

13 Alex Bellemare 68.50
14 Philip Casabon 60.25In the women's field, Devin Logan conquered the rail sections and jumps to nearly take the win at Sunday's Pantech Invitational slopestyle Final, until Kaya Turski fought back in her last run to win it with 92.25.
"I have my whole family and friends here with mu just trying to keep me calm," Turski said. "I tried not to think about the first run, tried to keep it together. It was a new run, so I was all in."
Turski's run went like this: Front switchup on the down bar, into a switch gap to the downbox, into a 180 on the cannon to switch 3 off. On the jumps, she startede with a switch 5, into a 5, to finish with switch 7.
Many among the field of 6 freeskiers struggled to put down clean runs, with the massive jumps offering no mercy. But the girls rose to the occasion and Logan's score of 90.50 held on until Turski came through as the last girl to drop.
"I came a little short (on last jump) and I knew next run I had to just go in a little faster," Turski said. "I went at it straight and tucked as much as I could and hoped for the best. The wind was a little tricky today, but I made it through."

News: Alexis Godbout & Ashley News: Alexis Godbout & Ashley Battersby Win Winter Dew Tour's Freeski Slopestyle Finals In Breckenridge
- From: media-75233

Description:
December 19, 2010
Breckenridge, Colorado – Canada’s Alexis Godbout claimed his first-ever Winter Dew Tour victory at today’s men’s freeski slopstyle final, closing out the four-day Nike 6.0 Open at Breckenridge Ski Resort. Prior to Godbout’s win, Ashley Battersby of Park City, Utah, was victorious in the women’s freeski slopestyle final, earning a top score of 83.00.
One of three athletes to never miss a Winter Dew Tour final, 20-year-old Godbout finally landed on top of the podium at the season-opening event. Godbout’s second run included a back 270, right rodeo 9 and a huge right kangaroo flip to earn a first-place score of 94.50. With a hometown crowd cheering him on, Breckenridge’s Bobby Brown, 19, placed second with a 92.25. Twenty-one-year-old Sammy Carlson of Tigard, Ore. followed behind in third with an 88.75.
“I really didn’t expect this that’s for sure. I’m stoked,” said Godbout. “I mean, I started the season in an amazing way and I couldn’t be happier.”
Twenty-two-year-old Battersby had a first place run in the women’s freeski slopestyle finals that included a disaster (when you air the first part of a rail and slide down the second) on the Nike 6.0 Burlington Double Set, a disaster to switch on the Toyota rail, a switch 540 and a 720. Breckenridge’s own Keri Herman, 28, placed second on her home mountain with a flat score of 83.00 and Canadian Jessica Warll, 22, rounded out the podium in third with an 80.00.
“It’s amazing to win the first stop of the Winter Dew Tour, and it feels so unreal,” said Battersby. “This is definitely one of my dreams and one of my goals that I’ve accomplished so I’m psyched.”
The four-day competition was the first of three stops of the Winter Dew Tour featuring men’s and women’s snowboarding and freeskiing disciplines. Approximately 30,500 people experienced the Nike 6.0 Open this weekend at Breckenridge Ski Resort in Breckenridge, Colo. The Tour will continue on to Killington Resort in Killington, Vt. in January and will conclude with the Toyota Championships at Snowbasin Resort in Ogden, Utah.
