Seth Morrison helmet cam in AKEven if you’ll never get this view, that doesn’t mean you can’t prevent others from enjoying it.

Oh, April.  Usually a glorious month stocked with empty late-season pow days, great stability, and awesome corn and park skiing.  It’s also the golden time for heli-skiing in Alaska, which is a particularly aggravating fact for the majority of us who have no access to the above-mentioned late season in this awful snow year.  With little more than mud left at our home mountains, we’re forced to suffer as videos and photos from our favorite pros and our lucky friends having the time of their lives in Alaska flood our Facebook feeds.  But fear not, snow-less masses, there is something you can do to fight back against the two key constituencies that are currently making that chip on your shoulder so infuriatingly large that you can’t even see around it to change lanes on the highway.

      The Gloating, Social Media-Abusing Pro

If you’re using the popular social media app Instagram these days, you’re likely following your favorite pros as they capture photo after photo of all the amazing places they get to go to that you don’t.  You might have tolerated it in February, when they were chest-deep in Japan while you were at least getting turns, but now that your gear is in the closet and they’re in a helicopter chasing pow, you just can’t take it anymore.

Not to worry!  Every smirking post glorifying heli-ski life and how sweet it is to ski miles and miles of untracked spines leaves the door open to respond with an equal amount of sarcasm and ridicule.

      So when you see this:

      “Cody Townsend Going Heli Skiing”
      @where ski movies are made

Cody Townsend Heli-Skiing in AKFlying home on a day like yesterday is the best feeling ever.

      Respond with this:

“Ryan Dunfee Looking at Dismal NH Surf Forecast”
@heli filming heli filming my epic vacation you will never have

NH surf ForecastHappy Easter from #AK where we are killing it waaaay harder than your stupid family picnic.  Me and the bros and pros are going heli-surfing in a $6 million helicopter made of dark chocolate.  Champagne drinking all day in between epicest faceshots and perfect overhead barrels while I shop for yachts online.  Everyone else is blowing it!!!  Oh yeah, going for a ride in a stealth bomber to blow up your crappy mountain that’s already closed haha!

And you can keep pushing it from there:

“Ryan Dunfee Bored Looking for Real-Life Jobs”
@Alaska and outer space.  Taking a crap on Richard Branson’s weak spaceship.

Star WarsF#ck yeah #AK is sick!!!  Day five spent outrunning imperial cruisers with a talking bush of fur named #Chewbacca while I played dodgeball with the Lakers girls in the back!!  Also skied a first descent on some random planet… 17,000-foot vert of BLOWER pow while you nerds sit at work!!  I’m the man and my vacation is way better than your life every day!  I rule!!!

Make sure to tag your favorite pro in every post, and you’ll be sure to see a precipitous drop-off in their gloaty powder posts as they realize us the rest of us have to carry on with our boring lives while they have fun, and we don’t want to hear about how much better it is to be them.

      The Obnoxious and Stoked Bro

      Broken Mountain BikeWhoops…

So your best buddy maxed out all his credit cards and booked a week-long heli trip in Haines, and is now enjoying the trip his entire ski life, as well as the Gaper Spirit Animal’s, has led up to.  It’s clear you’re not going to be “winning” a la Charlie Sheen this spring since you’re stuck at work crying over the lack of snow while your buddy sends you picture texts of all the life-changing lines he or she is shredding.  But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a way better summer than they will.  Place all their prized summer toys in the driveway – mountain bike, surfboard, hiking boots, grill – and promptly run them over with your car.  When they return from heli-skiing with a shit-eating grin that makes you want to puke, you can find solace in the fact that your summer will be way, way better than theirs.  What excuse you use for why you wrecked all your roomie’s gear is up to you.

Get fired up, read some recent AK gloat posts here, here, here, here and here.

  • Rocker@Squaw Bar Opens With Lo Rocker@Squaw Bar Opens With Lots Of Bros In Attendance

    • From: brigidmander
    • Description:

Ski bars have never claimed to be tame, but Squaw Valley hopes its brand-new Rocker@Squaw may just be a one-week old legend in the making. Considering Squaw local JT Holmes and two other members of the Red Bull Air Force parachuted in to kick off the grand opening party on Friday night — well, it could be business as usual at Squaw. But since so many of the Squaw crew are a little nuts, no one really knows what that means.  So, we can just go with the assumption that Rocker will be setting a pretty high bar for post-shred debauchery.

Rocker@SquawThe scene at Rocker@Squaw. Photo by Gary "Kiwi" Moore / Squaw Valley.

The grand opening mayhem on Friday night saw many skiers from the community as well as Squaw’s ski celebrities in attendance. The bar was built as a celebration of the athletes that call Squaw home.  Huge posters and ski shots of the likes of Jonny Moseley, Shane McConkey, and Julia Mancuso, to name a few, adorn the walls.  Rocker is also going to be providing an avenue to support the Shane McConkey Foundation.

Celebrity bartendersCelebrity bartenders Daron Rahlves, JT Holmes and Scott Gaffney. Photo by Gary "Kiwi" Moore / Squaw Valley.

The foundation donates to philanthropic causes in Shane’s name and works to keep skiing ridiculous by holding events such as the Pain McSchlonkey Classic.

“The name 'Rocker@Squaw' is itself is a tribute to Shane and the rocker technology for skis and snowboards that he helped to pioneer,” said Amelia Richardson, PR manager for Squaw Valley.

But the point is not to be all about the official pros, Richmond said. In a techie new twist, anyone will be able to upload helmet cam footage right at the bar to Rocker’s iMacs. It’s a brave new world for the classic apres spraying session. So if you’re proclaiming your awesomeness, you might have to back that up with some footage, bro.

JT Homes parachutes inJT Holmes parachutes in to his bartending gig. Photo by Gary "Kiwi" Moore / Squaw Valley.

There’s the five pound, $50 GNAR burger and 38 beers on tap, but since it is a full-on apres-ski bar, it also has cocktails — with a purpose. For five extra dollars, imbibers get a commemorative Shane McConkey glass donated by Rocker and Red Bull.  One hundred percent of glass sales will be given to the Shane McConkey Foundation.

“Squaw has been amazing — they miss Shane, too. It’s been a hard loss for everyone. He was such a legacy here,” Sherry McConkey said, when speaking on the decision by Squaw to partner with the foundation.

The bar, which is owned by Squaw Valley, was originally slated to be named “McConkey’s” but the resort decided to expand the focus to all its athletes instead, Sherry said. Plans are also underway to partner with HighFives Foundation, a nonprofit that helps severely injured athletes, Richardson said.

It isn’t often that a bar is kind enough to donate the proceeds from your headache to a good cause. So go ahead and get after it, after you get after it, on your next trip to Squaw. After all, as Sherry McConkey predicts, Rocker is going to be “insane.”

    • Description:

      November 14, 2011

Ice, rocks, slough, chutes — all of this is de rigueur for snowboarder Xavier de Le Rue. And there's going to be plenty of that in his upcoming film, "This Is My Winter."

"It's 4 o'clock and we left at mid-day," de Le Rue says while climbing a sketchy face in Europe. "How fucking stupid are we?"

The candid comments de Le Rue makes while pertched on the side of a mountain are what really makes this helmet cam teaser stand out.

"I guess I've got to trust you," he says as he ropes in to the ice using cordelette.

Pointing the camera at himself, he uses his other had to point to his head like a crazy person.

      And then he rips it.

This helmet cam teaser for "This Is My Winter" really puts you in de Le Rue's shoes. Check it out.

"This Is My Winter" features Xavier de Le Rue, Mathieu Crepel, Andreas Fransson and Samuel Anthamatten.

The full 28-minute movie will be available for free before December.

    • Description:

When both Jackson Hole and Grand Targhee closed for the season, one must inevitably migrate South in search of lift service and this past weekend presented the perfect opportunity to do so. Snowbird picked up two feet of snow last Tuesday en route to breaking their all time season snowfall record of 688". That snow was followed by another 18" Friday night and by Saturday morning I found myself at the base of Little Cottonwood Canyon waiting for avalanche clearance after a 5 hour drive from Jackson that began at 3 AM. And well, from there it was literally all time. Just watch the video and you'll see.

The past four days have been perhaps the best four of my life. It’s been an up and down past month or so here at Jackson Hole and things finally started to turn around last week. On Saturday, co-worker Brian Wulf and I took three flawlessly smooth laps through Four Pines. On Sunday it dumped 24″ in a 12 hour period and I met up with Don Watkins and Julie Weinberger for some deep pillow lines through Four Pines and Saratoga Bowl. Yesterday, Headwall, Casper Bowl and The Crags opened, changing my life forever and there’s no end in sight. Below are videos from yesterday and from Monday. Enjoy!

"The inbounds skiing on Jackson is still recovering. The upper elevations north facing shots still have a chalky softer base for this new snow to sit upon. Last Tuesday's surprise powder was followed by another 5" on Thursday and 6" on Friday, making for two fantastic days of skiing. Strong winds followed by warmer temperatures buffed out the mountain on Saturday, making for some funky skiing. Sunday was another storm day, with the resort picking up 8" and setting up what should have been an outstanding Monday morning. The weather gods, however weren't on the same page and coated the bottom half of the mountain with rain overnight. Rendezvous Bowl was still great this morning, but getting down the bottom half of the mountain was chaotic at times. And then mother nature decided to make amends by dropping 7" of blower pow for the today's last box. What a week! Here's a collection of clips from all of this.
