    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

      Ian McIntosh

Canadian pro freeskier Ian McIntosh is a hard-charging specimen of brute strength, raw talent, and pure style. Today, Backcountry.com, online specialty retailer of premium outdoor gear, welcomes McIntosh to their 34-member Pro Team. No slouch to slashing turns on steep powder faces, electrifying crowds at comps, or bringing his A-game for the camera, McIntosh joins an elite athlete roster that includes some of the most talented professionals in skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering, rock climbing, and mountain biking.

“We are super excited about having Ian join our program,” said Jonny Atencio, Sports Marketing Manager at Backcountry.com. “I've known Ian since he was competing on the Freeride Tour – the guy is a beast. His ability to seek out and ski unique lines is uncanny. We look forward to Ian's contributions to our community, as he will be providing product reviews, answering questions, and uploading photos and video to the Backcountry.com site.”

Growing up in the Kootenays in interior British Columbia, Canada, McIntosh has had skis strapped to his feet since he was two-years-old. As part of a family that was crazy about skiing – his grandfather is still an instructor at age 85 – McIntosh honed his love for speed and technique as a ski racer during his early years. But, as he got older, the big mountains were calling McIntosh’s name – which prompted a move to Whistler in 2004.

“Having an avid skiing family, it was natural for me to gain a huge love for the mountains,” said McIntosh. “I was ski touring with my family from age 10. But, my love for powder quickly overtook my love for racing and I found myself completely addicted to skiing and over the years became a successful ski bum. Many things helped me hone my skills over the years from racing to the Freeski Tour, but I attribute everything to those early years as a kid where my passion for the mountains was born.”
After a few years on the freeride comp circuit, where he took second-place overall on the Freeski World Tour in 2004 and won the North American crown the same year, McIntosh was invited to shoot with leading ski-film company Teton Gravity Research (TGR) – a dream of his. This opportunity opened the door to McIntosh’s ski career as he has become a leading athlete in not only TGR’s annual ski films, but many others including Warren Miller and Red Bull productions. In 2007, McIntosh won the Powder Magazine Awards “Breakthrough Performance” honor.

“My skiing today is evolving as I become more and more focused on going places where not many have ever been and skiing mountains and lines that have never been ridden,” said McIntosh. “Bigger challenges and bigger rewards are waiting. Joining Backcountry.com is super exciting for me because I think that I embody the backcountry spirit as strong as most.”
Consisting of some of the most experienced and respected athletes in the world, Backcountry.com’s Pro Team members are ambassadors – and affiliates – for the site. Through adding product reviews, updating their personal profile pages, and sharing news across their social media channels, Backcountry.com athletes are an extension of the brand helping connect and engage customers and the Backcountry.com community.

  • Thousands Rage At The Dream Fa Thousands Rage At The Dream Factory World Premiere

    • From: SamPetri
    • Description:

Dave Hudacsko at The Dream Factory premiere

On Saturday, Teton Gravity Research premiered its newest ski and snowboard film, The Dream Factory, to a few thousand fired-up fans at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort inside Walk Festival Hall.

The party kicked off around 3 p.m. with free beer and yard games in front of the TGR production office, right next to the JHMR tram. Yes that’s right, free beer next to the tram. As fans tossed back cool ones on the warm, sunny afternoon, Erik Roner, Ian McIntosh and Marshall Miller buzzed over Teton Village and jumped out of a plane, skydiving in to the venue with smoke trailing off their feet. All three stomped their landings in a rather tight common area between The Mangy Moose and Hotel Terra. That kicked the crowd in to high gear, and the vibe ramped up from there.

To accommodate all the fans who want to see the movie, each year there are two showings of the TGR movie – the early show and the late show. The early show is a bit mellower and the late show is rowdy. With about a thousand people in line to the venue, you could feel the hype in the air. Screw it if it’s still summer – the TGR premiere marks the beginning of winter in the Tetons. There you are, back at the base of the ski area with all your winter friends celebrating the act of sliding on snow. It’s an extraordinary feeling of camaraderie.

Inside, almost all of the TGR athletes were there signing posters including: Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Seth Morrison, Dylan Hood, Erik Roner, Dana Flahr, Dash Longe, Todd Ligare, Daron Rahlves, Forrest Shearer, Chris Benchetler, Griffin Post, Ralph Backstrom, Angel Collinson, Tim Durtschi, Matt Philippi and Max Hammer.

There was a mass amount of giveaways from TGR sponsors like GoPro, The North Face, Atomic, Marker, Volkl, Scott, DNA, Smith Optics, Black Diamond and The Ski Journal.

The film looks back to the roots of the freeriding movement in Alaska while at the same time looking to the future of the sport. In that sense, it was very cool to see members of the Jackson Hole Air Force as well as kids from the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard club together in attendance. It made for a cohesive vibe where people of all ages were celebrating just how freaking awesome it is to soar down the mountains on snow.

The film layers the most current ski footage from Alaska with historical clips. Really, two stories are told – that of the new freeriders and the pioneers before them. In all, the film shows the progression of skiing and snowboarding in Alaska, The Dream Factory.

Daniel Tisi and Sam WinshipSam Winship and Daniel Tisi.

One technique used this year is side-by-side footage of skiers shredding lines back in the day matched with people skiing the same lines now. Seeing this, you realize how far the sport has come and how monumental it was when people accomplished those feats for the first time. A couple of memorable moments like this come when you see Ralph Backstrom ride a line in Valdez made famous by Johan Olofsson in Totally Board 5. And when Colter Hinchliffe shreds a line in Haines called Dr. Seuss, made famous by Jeremy Jones. There are other stand-out performances by Tim Durtschi, Dash Longe, Dana Flahr, Daron Rahlves … Well, everyone pretty much crushes it – it’s a TGR flick.

Not to be missed is the heavy hitting Corbet’s Couloir segment at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. There, John Spriggs kicks off the session with a huge back flip into the line followed by the likes of Daniel Tisi, who, at the age of 13, airs into the line larger than most grown men ever have. In almost every segment the viewer is shown the past, present and future of skiing and snowboarding.

After the movie a party raged at The Mangy Moose. TGR skier Marc-Andre Belliveau – who last appeared in Lost And Found – played an acoustic set as an opener for the headliner American Royalty. While American Royalty rocked hard – playing a triple encore because the crowd would not let them off stage – perhaps one of the best moments came when Dash Longe joined Marc Andre on stage for a rendition of “Raging Alcoholic.” It was a soulful moment that set the vibe for the party and let people send it deep in to the night.

      Here's to winter.

  • IPRW Day 3 - Avalanche Safety IPRW Day 3 - Avalanche Safety And Snowpack Analysis

    • From: SamPetri
    • Description:

On Day three of Teton Gravity Research’s International Professional Riders Workshop at Snowbird, the crew focused on avalanche safety. The day started off with a presentation by Craig Gordon of the Utah Avalanche Center, who talked about avy awareness and snowmobiling in the backcountry.

Gordon is the sole avalanche forecaster for the western Uinta Mountains — an area accessed primarily by snowmobile. He recently developed the “Know Before You Go” avalanche education program for young adults in Utah, which he shared with the TGR crew. Even if the 15-minute PowerPoint presentation is for kids — it's a great teaching tool. Gordon kept his avy presentation entertaining, talking about “the Jihadists of the snowpack” (weak layers). Hilarious. Sometimes avy classes can get boring, but not when Gordon is teaching the class. His "Know Before You Go" program has directly reached over 100,000 students to date. Add 30 more to that number.

After, Ian McIntosh added his knowledge of snowmobiling to the conversation. McIntosh goes snowmobile-skiing extensively around Pemberton, B.C.

“A lot of times when I’m out there, I’m the only guy who checked the avy conditions,” McIntosh said. “I’m also the only guy with a rope and the only guy with a first aid kit.  … We’ve gotta watch each other’s backs. …. We’re doing heavy shit out there on our sleds, and if shit goes wrong, how are you going to deal with that?”

On that note, the crew headed out in to the field and split in to groups to analyze the snowpack, to practice searching for avalanche burial victims, to practice the compression test, the extended column test and even the rouche block test.

Considering the number of athletes that showed up to this event and the instructors of the course, a great deal of knowledge was shared and learned over the last three days. The final day — Thursday — will focus on rope work. TGR will be making a video of the entire four-day course, so stay tuned. And in the meantime, consider signing up for an avalanche class in your area.

Scroll down for a few photos from avalanche saftey day.

  • IPRW Day 1 - Wilderness First IPRW Day 1 - Wilderness First Aid

    • From: SamPetri
    • Description:

The fourth annual Teton Gravity Research International Pro Riders Workshop is shaping up to be one of the biggest to date. On Monday about 30 TGR athletes and staff arrived at the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird for the first part of the class — a 16-hour Wilderness First Aid course taught by the Jackson Hole Outdoor Leadership Institute.

Top TGR ski and snowboard athletes turned out for the event designed to build the team and get both production crews and riders on the same page before venturing into the mountains to film.

Athletes on the ski side included, Seth Morrison, Ian McIntosh, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Erik Roner, Dylan Hood, Dash Longe, Daron Rahlves, Rachael Burks, Todd Ligare, Griffin Post, Matt Philippi and Tim Durtschi.

On the snowboard side, Jeremy Jones, Ralph Backstrom, Ryland Bell and Forrest Shearer were in attendance.

On Day 1 the crew learned how to survey an accident scene and assess what happened to victims, even if victims are unconscious. The first day of the class covered emergency moves like how to drag and carry a victim to safety; CPR; helmet and backpack removal; common ski, snowboard and snowmobiling injuries; shock; splints, head, neck and spine clearing; soft tissue injuries; cold injuries; bleeding and hypothermia.

And at the end of the day the crew played around with emergency sleds and bivy sacks designed by Brooks Range. This winter, every TGR production crew will carry Brooks Range emergency gear in the field.
