News: Olympic Snowboarding And News: Olympic Snowboarding And Freeskiing Teams Announced At Copper
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Copper Mountain, Colorado — With a host of new action sports events on the docket for the 2014 Olympics just two years away, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) formally announced 2011-12 U.S. Snowboarding and U.S. Freeskiing teams Friday from its training facility at the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix at Copper.
The announcement includes first year teams in slopestyle snowboarding and skiing, as well as halfpipe skiing – all the result of decisions by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) earlier this year to bring the events into the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The USSA named 21 athletes to U.S. Snowboarding halfpipe and slopestyle teams, and 17 to U.S. Freeskiing.
Halfpipe athletes have had outstanding training in Copper's early-opening 22-foot pipe and competed in the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix opener this past weekend at the Colorado resort.

As a part of the Copper announcement, the inaugural U.S. Snowboarding Slopestyle Snowboarding Pro Team was named. Olympic halfpipe bronze medalist and multi-event threat Scotty Lago (Seabrook, NH), along with Sprint U.S. Grand Prix and Euro X Games winner Chas Guldemond (Reno, NV), were among those selected. Holding the coaching reins for the 2012 slopestyle crew is former U.S. Snowboarding athlete Bill Enos, who comes to the team from Waterville Valley.
"With the inclusion of slopestyle snowboarding in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, naming this team is a natural step for us," said U.S. Snowboarding and U.S. Freeskiing Director Jeremy Forster. "We're supporting a great group of Olympic medal potential athletes and we look forward to working with this amazing group of riders as we head toward Sochi."
One of the most recent sports to be added to the winter Olympic lineup, slopestyle snowboarding features a stylized course featuring kickers, rails, boxes and other freestyle features that riders will incorporate into their runs.
"There have been so many huge developments in slopestyle snowboarding in the past year. The riders have been taking the sport to new levels, the IOC gave the nod to the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games, and now we are naming this group of super-talented riders to the first ever U.S. Snowboarding Slopestyle Pro Team," said U.S. Snowboarding and U.S. Freeskiing Halfpipe and Slopestyle Head Coach Mike Jankowski. "These athletes are paving the golden road for U.S. Snowboarding into the future."
According to Guldemond, being named to the team means more opportunities for him to take his riding to that next level. "It's something new for the organization. It's a really exciting change and shows the growth in snowboarding," said Guldemond. "The benefits U.S. Snowboarding can provide for me will help take my snowboarding to the next level, as well as the other riders. Having a national team will allow riders to progress that much more."
The team roster includes a group of athletes known for their slope abilities including Dew Tour slopestyle champion Sage Kotsenburg (Park City, UT), X Games silver medalist Eric Willett (Breckenridge, CO) and 14-year-old slopestyle phenom Ty Walker (Stowe, VT) on the women's side.
Longtime U.S. Snowboarding partner, Burton, has signed on to support the U.S. Snowboarding Slopestyle Pro Team by providing official uniforming for the Team's inaugural inclusion in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
The season kicks off for slopestyle snowboarding Dec. 15 when the Winter Dew Tour touches down in Breckenridge, CO. Key events in the season including the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix in Mammoth Mountain, CA, X Games, Dew Tour and the Feb. 10-19 TTR World Championships in Oslo, Norway.
Olympic Medalists Head Halfpipe Pro Team
Four Olympic medalists headline the U.S. Snowboarding Halfpipe Pro Team. In addition to his slopestyle team spot, Olympic halfpipe bronze medalist Lago heads a talented U.S. men’s halfpipe team joined by fellow 2010 Olympian Greg Bretz (Mammoth Mountain, CA). The U.S. women boast one of the strongest groups in snowboarding history with Olympic and X Games gold medalist Kelly Clark (Mt. Snow, VT), four-time X Games gold medalist and Olympic silver medalist Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, CO) and Olympic and X Games champion Hannah Teter leading the way. Clark was the dominant force in the sport last season, taking down all the major titles.
Joining them for her second year on the Pro Team is 2010 Euro X champ Kaitlyn Farrington (Sun Valley, ID), who picked up an opening win in the Copper Grand Prix a year ago as well as second in X Games, plus two-time Olympian Elena Hight. Matt Ladley (Steamboat Springs, CO) moves up from Rookie to Pro Team following his big win in the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix in Mammoth Mountain.
The Pro Team opens its season in the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix this weekend. In addition to the Grand Prix, the comp lineup for the season will be the Dew Tour, X Games, U.S. Open and other major international competitions.
"There's an amazing depth of talent on this team with six Olympic medals," said Jankowski. "We've had great early season training here at Copper and are anxious to get into the pipe for competition this weekend."
The vets are not the only snowboarders taking to the pipe as the Rookie Team was also announced led by Benji Farrow (Ludlow, VT) who was recently fifth in a FIS World Cup. Spencer Shaw (Stratton Mountain, VT), who took second at the 2011 Mammoth Grand Prix and Taylor Gold (Steamboat Springs, CO), second place in the 2011 Junior Worlds halfpipe, also highlight the team. The women's squad is led by 15-year old Maddy Schaffrick (Steamboat Springs, CO), who scored a 2009 Grand Prix podium at the age of 13 along with Serena Shaw (Stratton Mountain, VT).
Veteran Pro Team halfpipe coach Rick Bower, a former World Champion, will be joined by Olympian Tommy Czeschin this season. Spencer Tamblyn will return to coach the Rookie Team.
The U.S. Snowboarding Snowboardcross Team will be named next week at Telluride in advance of the USANA Snowboardcross Cup.

The USSA also confirmed the halfpipe and slopestyle skiing teams it nominated earlier this year as a result of the IOC decision.
Nine athletes were confirmed on the U.S. Freeskiing Halfpipe Pro Team including X Games champions Jen Hudak (Salt Lake City) and Simon Dumont (Bethel, ME). The IOC gave the green light to halfpipe skiing last April.
In slopestyle, 10 athletes were confirmed to the U.S. Freeskiing Slopestyle Pro Team. The inaugural team is headlined by AFP Slopestyle Tour Champion Bobby Brown (Denver, CO), World Championship gold medalist Alex Schlopy (Park City, UT), World Championship bronze medalist Keri Herman (Breckenridge, CO), X Games gold medalist Sammy Carlson (Hood River, OR), Dew Tour winner Tom Wallisch (Salt Lake City) and reigning U.S. halfpipe champ Devin Logan (West Dover, VT).
Slopestyle skiing was incorporated as an Olympic sport this past July. Athletes are judged on runs in which they perform tricks on a series of jumps, rails, boxes and other features of a manmade slopestyle course.
Former pro freeskiing athletes Andy Woods and Evan Raps have been named coaches. Woods will head the Halfpipe Pro Team with X Games medalist Evan Raps leading slopestyle.
The Halfpipe Pro Team kicked off its season at the Visa U.S. Halfpipe Grand Prix in Copper this weekend, with the Slopestyle Pro Team on course next week at the opening Dew Tour in Breckenridge.
The North Face, a charter partner of the U.S. Freeskiing program, will also outfit U.S. Freeskiing's halfpipe and slopestyle teams for their 2014 Olympic debut.

Video: Solitude - Jen Hudack M Video: Solitude - Jen Hudack Moving Mountains Episode 3
- From: media-75233

Description:
This is the third and final episode of Jen Hudak's web series titled, "Moving Mountains." The following is a video description from Hudak:
In the midst of the craziest contest season of my life last year, I managed to escape to Japan for an epic adventure. Accompanied by my good friend Julian Carr, founder of Discrete Headwear, we met up with filmer/editor extraordinaire John Roderick of Neu Productions, world-renowned photographer Erik Seo, and our guide Nobu Murai. We were headed to experience the isolated parts of the Japanese Mountains to the North near Furano-- to step even further away from the contest scene, away from sponsors, away from business. It was time to reintroduce myself to the joys of skiing, of creativity, of fun.
With a 5 a.m. wake-up call the next morning, we loaded our van and made the venture north. By 8 a.m. we had arrived at our hotel and by 9:20 a.m. we were on the tram. By 10 a.m. we were about ready to throw in the towel. Conditions were about as bad as they could have been for Japan. There was nothing to do but laugh, so I did- quite heartily- and shortly thereafter everyone else laughed too. Thankfully Julian was there to keep the confidence up. He is incredible for that. (Maybe that is why he can successfully front-flip 200+ ft cliffs.)
After working for a few hours, Julian managed to find a few airs to get off of, and after a mini-melt down from me, he convinced me to ski a small line and drop into snow that resembled conditions I skied when I blew my right knee. By the end of the day we were feeling a bit more comfortable with the conditions. We worked hard for the shots that we got, and though they weren’t many, they were as good as they could’ve been. But we were all wondering what we would do in the coming days. We needed snow, a lot of snow.
Apparently the snow-gods were listening and they blessed us with a bit of a storm. When we woke the following morning and looked outside, it was clear that there would be some fresh snow, but we figured only about 6-10″. It would help. We could milk some pow turns, but we would still have to look for that northern aspect and jumping off of anything might still be questionable. We headed out, slightly skeptical but mostly optimistic.
It didn’t take long to realize that it had in fact snowed about half a meter up top. Right away we were getting face shots. The new snow was deep and it didn’t seem to be letting up. From run to run, our bootpack would be filled with new snow. This went on all day. We got shot after shot. I skied some of the deepest snow of my life and got to do it with one of my favorite people. I got to ski for me again and it was extremely refreshing. A few airs, lots of pow turns and endless smiles. As you can see by this edit, we got it good for the next few days.
I am so grateful for this life and am so grateful for moments like this that provide the reminder. It is easy to get caught up in the hustle and forget just how lucky we are. Life is a blessing. Remember to try to make the most of it everyday, and you’ll be on a good path.

Description:
November 7, 2011
Moving Mountains is a three-part web video series that follows Jen Hudak as she recovers from a season-ending injury, competes in the 2011 X Games at Buttermilk and travels to Japan. The video profile of the five-time X Games medalist offers a glimpse into the athlete's life.
In this episode, Hudak prepares for one of the biggest halfpipe events of the ski season.
"Imagine life, elevated," Hudak writes on her Vimeo page. "Every emotion, sensation, vibration is powering 10 times higher than usual. If you can grasp that, then you can grasp the X Games and this episode of 'Moving Mountains.' It’s all about pressure."
Episode three will be released in the beginning of December, Hudak said in an email.
"I hope that everyone can enjoy this edit, understand a little more about what goes on behind the scenes at X Games, and get stoked that winter is right around the corner, opportunities abounding," Hudak said. "Life is about pushing yourself — dream big."

After a season-ending crash that happened last March during an X Games Europe training run in Tignes, France, Jen Hudak was left with a dislocated shoulder and an out-of-commission knee.
Now the halfpipe skier is on the road to recovery. With an eye on the future, Hudak hopes that road will lead to the 2014 Olympics.
This video, the first in a series, recaps the five-time X Games medalist's season as she travels from Utah to Colorado, then on to Japan and France.
"We captured my daily life in Utah from the U.S Ski Team gym, to Park City’s incredible pipe and into the infamous Utah sidecountry — enjoying my last few days of freeskiing before jumping into the high-pressure contest circuit," Hudak says on her Vimeo page.
The candid video offers a glimpse at Hudak's life and how she is overcoming from her injuries as an athlete.
Storyline aside, perhaps the best nugget of information in this Web clip is finding out that she grew up with a rope tow in her back yard in Vermont. That is so cool. No wonder she's such a strong skier.

Freeski Open of New Zealand press release:
Wanaka, New Zealand — Over 100 athletes have converged on Wanaka for The North Face Freeski Open of New Zealand, presented by Volkl, which begins with the slopestyle qualifiers and semi-finals on Thursday, Sept. 1 at Snow Park. Now in it’s seventh year, the Freeski Open is officially recognized on the international freeski World Tour alongside the world’s biggest freeski events and has established itself as the biggest event of its kind in the southern hemisphere attracting the world’s best freeski athletes from across the globe.
Confirmed riders this year include current overall world freeskiing champion and winner of both the slopestyle and halfpipe competitions at the recent Winter Games NZ, Gus Kenworthy (USA); New Zealand’s own Jossi Wells (2010 overall world freeskiing champion, currently ranked fourth overall); Switzerland’s Elias Ambuehl (ranked eighth overall and sixth in slopestyle); America’s Alex Schlopy (ranked ninth overall and fourth in slopestyle), Joss Christensen (ranked 11th overall), David Wise (ranked fourth in halfpipe), Taylor Seaton (two-time NZ Freeski Open halfpipe winner), and Nick Goepper (slopestyle winner at one of the 2011 Winter Dew Tour stops and an X-Games competitor) along with Italy’s Markus Eder (winner of the Big Air at the Polish Freeski Open and a Winter X Games Europe competitor), Finland’s AJ Kemppainen (Winter X Games Competitor), Switzerland’s Nils Lauper and Canada’s Vincent Gagnier.
The heavy hitting women’s field will see overall world champion and winner of all three Winter Games NZ freeski events, Devin Logan from the USA, going up against France’s Anais Caradeux (ranked second in halfpipe), Canada’s Kim Lamarre (ranked fifth in slopestyle and slopestyle winner at last year’s NZ Freeski Open), America’s Jen Hudak (ranked seventh in halfpipe), Sweden’s Emma Dahlström (ranked seventh in slopestyle and slopestyle winner at the European Freeski Open) and New Zealand’s Janina Kuzma who took second in halfpipe at last year’s NZ Freeski Open.Photo: Bobby Brown competes in slopestyle at the Freeski Open NZ Credit: Camilla Stoddart
“Our goal has always been to provide a proving ground for New Zealand’s athletes against the best in the world in our own backyard,” said Freeskiing NZ’s Hamish Acland. “We also recognize that in providing an event of this calibre we have the ability to promote NZ to the world as a premier training and competition destination.”
The Freeski Open covers three major freeski disciplines: Slopestyle, Halfpipe and Big Mountain."Within the freeskiing community being able to ski all aspects of the mountain is highly regarded,” explains Acland. “The North Face Freeski Open is unique on the world stage as it allows for skiers to compete in both freestyle and freeride competitions.”
"I think this is pretty cool as it shows the public all aspects of the sport but also lets skiers like Taylor Seaton, two-time halfpipe champion, go up against the freeride guys and on the other side, lets one of the world’s best big mountain skiers, Janina Kuzma, go up against the top women in slopestyle and halfpipe.”
The Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) includes the Slopestyle and Halfpipe as an AFP points earner while the Big Mountain is a Freeride World Qualifying (FWQ) Event.
This year’s slopestyle course has been designed to ensure the best possible features for throwing down big.
Head Judge Rafael Regazzoni is looking forward to some intense competition. "The slopestyle course looks sick, the best I have seen so far in New Zealand. The field is so strong, the competition will be sweet."
"What happens here in New Zealand is really important,” said Regazzoni. “The first competitions of the season give us a good insight into freeskiing's progression and what we will see at the Northern Hemisphere competitions."
Snow Park provides the ultimate venue for spectators with easy viewing from the Woolshed Restaurant or from virtually anywhere on the mountain. Description:
Article from Skiingmag.com:
"In preparation for the inclusion of halfpipe at 2014 Olympics in Sochi, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association announced it’s first-ever national freeskiing team today.
The nine invited athletes are: Simon Dumont, David Wise, Torin Yater-Wallace, Tucker Perkins, Gus Kenworthy, Devin Logan, Jen Hudak, Jess Cumming, and Brita Sigourney. Mike Jankowski, who is currently the head freestyle coach, will coach the team.
The USSA made the decision of who to invite based on last year’s competition results, but U.S. Freeskiing Director, Jeremy Forster also noted that the athletes had a hand in making halfpipe skiing an Olympic sport. “They have played a key role in the formation of their sport and helped influence the IOC decision to include halfpipe skiing through their skills as athletes," he said."

News: USSA Launches US Freeski News: USSA Launches US Freeskiing Brand
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
May 2, 2011
New York, New York (US Ski Team) – Freeskiing athletes from the newest Olympic sport played a key role in development of the brand identity for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association's (USSA) new U.S. Freeskiing athletic program. The design was unveiled Monday at the New York offices of DraftFCB, which collaborated with the USSA on the creative process together with sport stakeholders.
The USSA announced the new U.S. Freeskiing program in January including the events of halfpipe and slopestyle skiing, along with skicross. In April, the International Olympic Committee added halfpipe skiing to the 2014 Olympic program in Sochi, Russia.
"We are an athletic organization and it was important that the athletes in this sport be integrally involved in the development of the new brand identity," said USSA President and CEO Bill Marolt. "Freeskiing athletes have taken great pride in advancing their sport to the Olympics and showcasing it through the millions of youth who ski in halfpipes and terrain parks at resorts across America."
The U.S. Freeskiing brand identity is the sport's visual language. The creative design is wrapped in patriotic red, white and blue, featuring a badge-like US on the left with a handcrafted flowing word mark for the word Freeskiing. The design evolves the shape of traditional letters into a dynamic motion – like freeskiing evolved from breaking the rules of traditional skiing. Each letter evolves in motion.
"The design represents how we feel about ourselves in our sport," said X Games champion Jen Hudak. "There's a feeling of independence – there are no rules, you can see that in the letters."
The USSA retained noted global agency DraftFCB to coordinate the creative process after a national agency search. Together with the USSA, DraftFCB managed an in-depth process to integrate freeskiing athletes in focus groups and maintained engagement with athletes through surveys and private interviews to foster original ideas and garner feedback leading up to the final design.
The new brand identity joins the USSA's family of notable brands including the U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding. "As athletes, we've pushed for our unique U.S. Freeskiing brand and we're proud to be a part of this highly respected family of programs," added Hudak.
"Freeskiing is the most rapidly expanding market in skiing globally," said the USSA's Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer Andrew Judelson. "The brand identity developed together with DraftFCB with the athletes will greatly enhance the public awareness of U.S. Freeskiing, benefiting athletes and partners in these new Olympic sports and help us generate new revenue to support those programs.."
"No single movement defines the sport of freeskiing," said DraftFCB SVP Group Creative Director Roald Van Wyk. "So our challenge was to create a brand identity that encapsulated the constant change that freeskiing is going through - capturing the movement and evolution of each trick."
The brand identity will showcase the sport in U.S. Freeskiing television programming on NBC, Versus, and Universal Sports, as well as print and digital marketing materials. It will be available on a variety of merchandise from licensees and suppliers.
Freeskiing events are showcased annually in the USSA's Revolution Tour, Hole Shot and Grand Prix circuits, along with X Games, Dew Tour, The North Face Park and Pipe tour and Association of Freeskiing Professionals events, as well as the International Ski Federation's Freestyle World Cup.
Final approval on slopestyle skiing is pending with a decision anticipated in May or June. Skicross joined the Olympics in 2010

News: Halfpipe Skiing Makes 20 News: Halfpipe Skiing Makes 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games
- From: media-75233

Description:
LONDON (April 6) – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Wednesday afternoon that halfpipe skiing and women's ski jumping will be included in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. A decision for slopestyle skiing and snowboarding and the alpine team event will be made in late May.
"This is a special day. The IOC's decisions to include women's ski jumping and halfpipe skiing marks a truly progressive era in the Olympic sport movement," said USSA President and CEO Bill Marolt. "Today is the beginning of a chapter in the history books that will showcase these great athletes' talent and dedication on the world's stage in 2014 and beyond. The USSA is happy to be a part of these exciting developments in Olympic sport."
"With these (events) on board, we have a very compelling value proposition for these Games," said IOC Sport Director Christophe Dubi. "It will be an extremely exciting program."
Women's ski jumping and halfpipe skiing were two of the five ski and snowboarding events being considered for inclusion in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. After much deliberation, Dubi proudly announced the approved events. With successful World Championship events at Holmenkollen in Norway and Park City Mountain Resort in Utah, the athletes' years of hard work and constant support of the sports committed advocates have paid off.
"I have been waiting for this decision for over six years now, it is a dream come true. Now on to the next dream: getting myself there," said 2010 X Games champion Jen Hudak (Salt Lake City). "The level of the sport is high, the interest in it is even higher, the Olympics provide us with the ultimate stage to show our sport to the world!"
"This is a great moment for freeskiing. I feel honored to be considered to be in the same class as an Olympic athlete. It’s exciting to be recognized as an Olympic caliber sport," said seven-time X Games champion Simon Dumont (Bethel, ME). "I hope to have the opportunity to go to Russia and make my country proud. I’ve been waiting for the chance to bring home a medal."
For halfpipe skiing, the inclusion coincides with the fast-paced progression of the sport, as the world's youth continues to vocalize their interest through self-made videos and the increased number of ski terrain parks and halfpipes across the world. That progression led the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association to create a new athletic program and brand, U.S. Freeskiing, around the new events.
"The IOC's decision to include these new sports in the 2014 Olympics has reach and relevance to millions of youth around the world," said USSA's Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer Andrew Judelson. "This decision gives them the opportunity to dream big - to compete on the world's largest stage. This has an incredibly positive impact on the growth of our new U.S. Freeskiing brand by giving marketers a captivated and scalable audience to communicate their messages."
"It is hugely appealing to the youth. This is what kids do. They go in the halfpipe and on the jumps. Both slopestyle and halfpipe are extremely popular and appealing," explained Dubi when asked about how the decision will appeal to youth during the IOC press conference. "If you go on the internet this is what you see as well. They film themselves and share their videos. It's quite amazing what is happening."
For women's ski jumping, the decision to include became clear after seeing the level of competition significantly improve from the 2009 World Championships to the 2011 World Championships. With 13 nations represented in the top 30 competitors, and nearly 30 women consistently jumping between 80 and 97 meters, the diversity proved favorable.
"I’ve dedicated my life, hopes and dreams to ski jumping and I’m thrilled that our sport will be showcased at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi," said 2009 World Champion Lindsey Van (Park City, UT). We are ready.
"For our sport this means a huge step in the right direction. Women's ski jumping has been developing a lot over the past 10 years, but the Olympics is what our sport really needed to take the next step."
"To have our event accepted for Sochi 2014 feels amazing," said Jessica Jerome (Park City, UT). "This decision gives us more validity in the sense that it can only keep growing from here."
"The USSA is thrilled that these athletes will now be able to compete at the Olympic level," said USSA's Executive Vice President, Athletics Luke Bodensteiner. "They've proven themselves athletically, most recently at the 2011 Nordic World Championships in Oslo, with an excellent championship competition under some of the most challenging conditions possible."
Other events included in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi are biathlon mixed relay, the figure skating team event and the luge team relay.
"What is important though is to remain relevant to what is happening every given weekend. Once you have this relevance all the rest will follow," explained Dubi in reference to the consideration of Olympic events inclusion. "But it is not driven by commercial objectives it is driven by remaining appealing and remaining relevant to what people do every weekend, especially the youth."
Hopes are optimistic for slopestyle skiing and snowboarding and the alpine team event as the IOC will further review the events before making a final decision in late May. The IOC plans to continue meeting with both the International Ski Federation and Sochi organizers relative to the remaining events. - Blog post

News: Kevin Rolland & Brita Si News: Kevin Rolland & Brita Sigourney Win Winter Dew Tour Freeski Superpipe At Snowbasin

February 12, 2011
Ogden, Utah (The Dew Tour) – Everything was on the line for Frenchman Kevin Rolland heading into today’s freeski superpipe final at the Winter Dew Tour’s Toyota Championship. Rolland and Simon Dumont had flip flopped first and second all year, but it was Rolland who came out on top today earning his second win of the season and his first-ever Dew Cup. On the women’s front, Brita Sigourney of Carmel, Calif. took top honors at the freeski superpipe final with a final score of 92.00.
Heading into his second run, Rolland, age 21, already secured the highest score of the competition with a 95.00. However, he topped that on his victory lap by throwing out tricks that included two huge doubles and a flawless left double 12 for a final score of 96.50, the highest in Winter Dew Tour history for freeski superpipe, naming him this season’s Dew Cup Champion.
“To win the Dew Cup is crazy for me because it was my goal at the beginning of the season, and now to get it, it’s one of the craziest days of my life,” said Rolland. “I’m so, so stoked!”
The story of the day however may go to fellow Frenchman, Benoit Valentin, who placed second in the men’s final with a score of 90.25. Valentin, 18, competed in the Winter Dew Tour’s Last Chance Qualifiers (LCQs), held for the first time ever at the Toyota Championship. Valentin’s win in the LCQ’s gave him the opportunity to qualify into prelims at Snowbasin Resort, where he made an impressive second-place finish overall in the final. New Zealand’s Byron Wells, 18, rounded out the podium in third with an 84.25.
“This is just such a great day for me,” said Valentin. “To be able to have a chance to compete through the Last Chance Qualifiers, and to make it this far, is just so crazy for me. I skied the best I ever have today, and I’m so happy."
In the women’s freeski superpipe final, 21-year-old Sigourney earned a winning score of 92.00 on her first run by throwing out tricks that included a 900, a 540, an alley-oop 540 and a 720. Devin Logan, age 17 from Dover, Vt., followed in second with a 91.00 and local favorite Jen Hudak, age 24 from Salt Lake City, Utah, earned a third place score of 90.00.
“It feels awesome to win,” said Sigourney. “It’s the last stop for me and to go out with a win is just a really good feeling."
The four-day competition is the third and final stop on the 2010-11 Winter Dew Tour season featuring men and women’s snowboarding and freeskiing disciplines. The Toyota Championship will continue tonight with the snowboard superpipe finals and will conclude tomorrow with the snowboard and freeski slopestyle finals where the remaining Dew Cup Champions will be honored.

News: TNF's Mike Riddle Takes News: TNF's Mike Riddle Takes Gold At FIS World Freestyle Ski Championships, Jen Hudak Gets Silver
- From: media-75233

Description:
February 5, 2010
Park City, Utah (US Ski Team) – American Jen Hudak (Salt Lake City) ignored a 25 mph crosswind to win silver in halfpipe skiing at the 2011 FIS Freestyle World Championships. Simon Dumont (Dillon, CO), one of the sport's greatest stars, earned bronze.
NBC will air the halfpipe World Championships contest on Sunday, Feb. 6 at 3 p.m. ET.
Conditions for Saturday’s halfpipe competition could hardly have been more challenging. The halfpipe was subject to a fierce crosswind which affected athletes’ airs and radically impacted speeds across the flat bottom and up the steep 22-foot walls.
Hudak, who qualified first, needed a strong second run to upset what would have been a Canadian 1-2-3. With the final run of the women’s competition, Hudak laid down a very big and technical run, which included a smooth 900, to earn World Championship silver. Canadians Rosalind Groenewoud won gold, while Keltie Hansen got bronze.
"I knew the conditions were going to be tough," said Hudak. "But to be honest, I didn't even think of the weather until someone asked me after my run. I had one of the highest amplitudes of the day."
Each of the medalists was keenly aware that this was more than a typical competition. Halfpipe skiing, along with slopestyle, is under consideration by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to be included in the 2014 Winter Olympics hosted by Sochi, Russia. A decision is expected by the IOC sometime over the next couple months.
"There is a ton of attention on our sport right now. The IOC is here looking on," explained Hudak. "We just wanted to come out and put on a good show. Hopefully we will have a shot at 2014 in Sochi [Russia]."
It was also the strong winds that impaired Dumont in his final run, blowing him off course, which kept him from challenging Canada’s Mike Riddle for gold.
"The biggest thing about today was obviously the Olympic push," said Dumont. "If this were any other event, I probably would have pulled out. But our big goal is to end up in the Olympics. Hopefully we proved that we are here, we’re serious and we are going to ski in a hurricane and put on a good show."
Dumont’s bronze medal run began with a huge cork 900 into a right side 900 to a double flip 900 with tail grab to an allyoop 720 and ended with a switch 720.
David Wise (Reno, NV) had a standout second finals run in which he led off with a super technical double cork 1260. Wise ended in fourth after being ousted off the podium when defending World Champion and two-time X Games champ Kevin Rolland wowed the judges with his second run. Joining Dumont and Wise in the finals was Tucker Perkins (North Hampton, NH) in seventh.
U.S. women Devin Logan (West Dover, VT) and Brita Sigourney (Carmel, CA) had solid runs down Park City Mountain Resort’s Eagle Superpipe. The two finished just off the podium in fifth and sixth respectively.
The final event of the 2011 FIS Freestyle World Championships, hosted by Deer Valley Resort in Park City, UT, will be dual moguls. Finals begin at 7:30 MST.

News: Jen Hudak, Simon Dumont News: Jen Hudak, Simon Dumont Lead USA in Ski Halfpipe
- From: media-75233

Description:
December 10, 2010
Copper Mountain, Colorado – Canadians were the cream of the crop Friday when a new world of innovation was introduced to the Visa U.S. Halfpipe Grand Prix as ski halfpipe made its competition debut in the series. Justin Dorey and Rosalind Groenwoud, who both hail from Canada, took the win. Jen Hudak (Salt Lake City) and Simon Dumont (Bethel, ME) led the USA in second and third in an event being considered by the International Olympic Committee for 2014.
Dorey was sitting in second headed into the final run of the day, topped only by his fellow Canadian competitor Mike Riddle, but he threw down with a double cork 12, flat 3, switch left 9, switch right 7, right flat 5 to nail a win.
"Everyone had pretty good runs and no one could go that big, so I wasn't sure how I'd end up, but I'm stoked with a win under my feet. I couldn't be happier," Dorey said. "This is an awesome event. It's really well run."
Second place winner Riddle was hopeful that the first inclusion of ski halfpipe in the Grand Prix will be a precursor for great things to come in the sport.
"The Grand Prix is a huge snowboarding event and it's great for us with the push for the Olympics. I would love to go to the Olympics one day, it's my all time dream," Riddle said.
Dumont put down a series of solid hits to land in third, tapping him for a spot on the 2011 World Championship team for ski halfpipe, and making him hopeful for his sport's eventual Olympic inclusion.
"I feel like I've podiumed in a lot of different events and the only one left is the Olympics. It's the biggest venue with the most people watching, so if I can go there and take a medal it would be a dream come true," Dumont said. "I hope that everyone looks at this event, realizes that skiing can put on a good show and it's exciting. Hopefully they'll put us in the Olympics and we can do our thing."
Snowy conditions carried on steadily throughout the competition, but according to women's winner Groenwold, the snow was merely a motivational factor in how she competed.
"I've got the best wax tech in the world, Kenny from Swix, and I actually like slow pipes because it forces me to be aggressive," said Groenwold, who nailed a straight air mute grab, 900, left 5, right 5, left 360, switch right 540 for the win.
Groenwold was happy at the inclusion of ski halfpipe in the Grand Prix series, and hopes that coinciding ski and snowboard halfpipe events will continue.
"I think it's awesome that we're being included this year. It's a positive step moving forward for the Olympics," Groenwold said. "I think we've been competing with the snowboarders at other events and it was nice that the FIS saw it is easy to run our competitions together."
Hudak and fellow U.S. athlete Jess Cumming (Wilton, CT) hit the Grand Prix podium as well, finishing second and third. The two earned some Grand Prix trophies, not to mention the two spots that were up for grabs on the U.S. ski halfpipe World Championship team.
"This is the first Grand Prix that we've had as skiers and it's nice to be a part of such a well established and well run event," Hudak said.
In step with her fellow competitors, Hudak hopes the sport's growth will earn it an opportunity to be an Olympic discipline.
"It's a really good opportunity for us to show the world what we can do and hopefully the right people are watching and it will help our push for the Olympics in 2014," Hudak said.
The action at Copper Mountain continues Saturday with snowboarders dropping into the halfpipe at 11:30 a.m. MT, followed by the Paul Mitchell Progression Session at 7:00 p.m.
