EYE OF THE CONDOR 3 from La Parva on Vimeo.
The final chapter of the saga comes to fruition for its third and final year. Ski La Parva is thrilled to announce that it will once again be host to the annual Sony Eye of the Condor – a weeklong film and photo competition set high in the heart of the Andes.
This year’s event will showcase teams of skiers and snowboarders hailing from around the world August 2 - August 9. Discrete Headwear, and Icelantic Skis are among some of the teams returning but the competition will also feature some exciting new faces that will be making a first time appearance for the events third and final year. With all-star alumni featuring icons such as Andy Mahre, Pep Fujas, Sean Pettit, Tanner Rainville, Ingrid Backstrom, Rachael Burks, Seth Morrison, Chris Davenport, and more, you never know who will show up this year.
“Sony Eye of the Condor has been such an important event to us the past several years, and we would love to see more events with this format, but all good things must come to an end and we have decided to put this trilogy to rest and look forward to what is next. To those teams out there thinking about making the trip this year, I am going to make you an offer you can’t refuse!” says La Parva Director of Marketing and Sales Rodrigo Medina.
In addition to the competition, which will award cash prizes to the best video and photography portfolios, Sony Eye Of The Condor will present its annual forum discussions led by industry leaders examining the role action sports and media play in our society at large.
The week of festivities will culminate in the booming metropolis of Santiago Chile for the second annual iF3 La Parva/Chile (International Freeskiing Film Festival). The film festival will play host to the Sony Eye of The Condor awards and will include a celebration of the global Freeskiing film community, complete with athlete autograph sessions, film screenings, vendors, and live music.
The winning films and photos from Sony Eye of The Condor will be showcased not only in Santiago but also around the globe at the other iF3 events, including Montreal, Quebec; Annecy France; and Innsbruck, Austria.
Eye of the Condor is presented with the support of Sony. Please address press and other inquiries to La Parva Team eotc3@laparva.cl

On The Ascent: Liz Daley On The Ascent: Liz Daley

Description:
Liz Daley rips in La Parva, Chile, this past August. Photo by Adam Clark. If you’ve lived in Washington’s mountain communities, you’ve probably heard of Liz Daley. Born in Tacoma, Wash., the 27-year-old backcountry snowboarder, climber, and mountain guide has used the Cascade Mountains as training grounds her entire life. With multiple expeditions and first female descents on many of the cardinal peaks of the Pacific Northwest — Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker, Mt. Shasta, and Mt. Adams — Daley has been preparing for a flourishing future in snowboard mountaineering. Throw a few seasons in Chamonix into the mix, new relationships with Jones Snowboards and Patagonia, and Liz might just be on the road to becoming one of snowboarding’s leading ladies in backcountry and mountaineering.
Or is she already there?
I get in touch with her to chat about the upcoming season just before she rushes out to an event in Seattle. It’s a few hours before and she’s a ball-of-energy, but excited to revel in the recent snowfall, intentions to climb in Utah all of November, and a hut trip she has planned for December on Roger’s Pass. Following her social media stream is enough to make even the most keen climbers and snowboarders jealous. Liz doesn’t let a day go by without getting outside.
“For years I've been seeking out ways to ride as much as possible and travel — becoming a professional snowboarder just helps facilitate that,” explains Liz candidly. “But, I don't like the idea of being solely a professional snowboarder. I want to develop an array of skills. That's why I got into patrolling and guiding.”

Brilliantly blonde and always outgoing, Liz is unassuming when it comes to a high-profile resume of big lines around the world. The first time we met, in Mt. Baker’s only après bar, the Tap Room, her long blonde hair, pink pom-pom hat, and perfect, white-toothed smile glowed in a room full of grungy ski-bum dudes and mountain employees. She resembled a backcountry Barbie of sorts (minus the psychosis and other plastic-girl stereotypes), but with all the characteristics parents should want their daughters to emulate. She’s obviously motivated, confident, and modest at the same time about her achievements, including missions like the first female snowboard descent of the Coleman Headwall of Mt. Baker. How hadn’t I heard about her before? How had the narrative of Liz Daley, a competent and multi-faceted snowboarder chick, who splits her time between the Cascades and Chamonix, been kept silent?

“Liz has come into her own as a competent mountain guide and snowboard mountaineer at a time when excitement around these sports is really growing,” says professional skier Drew Tabke, who’s been on many mountain adventures with Daley over the years. “I expect a lot of options to open for her as far as travel and expeditions to virtually anywhere — and Liz has the motivation and enthusiasm to tackle anything.”
For an all-around athlete and mountain girl like Liz, representing companies like Patagonia and Jones isn’t the only way she’s going to find her way into the outdoors. With EMT and Outdoor Emergency Care certifications, a guide resume with the American Alpine Institute, and a recent stint on the Canyons Ski Patrol in Utah, her career options in the mountains are clearly diverse and easily attainable. She’s even spearheaded her own splitboard programs with AAI, which start in December near Mt. Baker.

“Last spring I was teaching six-day Basic Alpinism courses on Mt. Baker, where I demonstrate crevasse rescue and ice climbing techniques. It’s fun, but walking down any mountain sucks,” says Liz. “I'm hoping all of my courses fill up so I won't have to walk down another mountain ever again.”
This winter, even if Liz won’t be walking down mountains, she’ll still be climbing and riding them. That’s inevitable. Her upcoming season involves a few early season objectives in Washington and BC, followed by her AAI clinics, and then she’s off to Chamonix — a place where a long list of lines to ride has begun to accumulate.

“There are a couple big lines I've had my eyes on for years, but they haven't been in,” she explains. “In Cham, you don't ride something if it's not in, so I'm waiting until conditions are right. I've also yet to summit Mont Blanc.”
Regardless of her job or whether you’ve heard of her or not, Liz will be out ripping around in the mountains of the world. Not a few times a week or a handful a month. This girl is out there all the time. And her skills are transcending those of other women in her discipline because of her intrinsic motivation to go out everyday.
For Liz, being in the mountains isn’t a job or hobby; it’s a daily affair.

Description:
This is a silly video I made from our Patagonia 2013/14 product testing trip. Caroline Gleich, Carston Oliver and myself, Liz Daley are down in Chile right now testing out the new line, and giving feedback to designer, Glen Morden. We came at the perfect time for maximum shred times. We've got 70cm's in the past week with storm days, blue bird days and everything in between. A great trip to test out the clothing in all sorts of conditions. I've been riding my women's 156 split with Karakorams everyday and I LOVE IT! Thanks Patagonia and Jones Snowboards for the trip with an awesome crew and blower pow!

News: Icelantic, Discrete Take News: Icelantic, Discrete Take Top Honors at Sony Eye of the Condor
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
La Parva, Chile – After an intense week of competition, Sony Eye of the Condor concluded Friday in spectacular fashion at the first ever iF3- La Parva in Santiago, Chile. At a crowded Mallsport, Chris Bezamat and Team Discrete took top honors in the photography category while Katy-Robin Garton and Team Icelantic took home the award for “Best Film.” The “People’s Choice” award will be voted on this week through an online voting contest hosted by several websites.
On the photography side of things, Chris Bezamat bested photographers Jordan Ingmire, Roberta Rebori, and Juan Luis de Heckeren with his capturing of Chilean mountain culture and his unique use of flashes. This is Bezamat’s second year competing in Eye of the Condor, and his first year taking home the win.
“Last year’s winner, Juan Luis de Heckeren, is a really talented photographer so I was pretty nervous about what team Chile was going to have- plus we didn’t see them the entire week,” said Bezamat. “But, the portrait shot I had of Rachael (Burks) and the sunset shot of Parker (Cook) were pretty strong images, so I thought I had a pretty good chance, but I definitely wasn’t sure we had it by any means.”
The most heavily contested category, the film category, came down to a tight race between Team Discrete and Team Icelantic. In the end, John Roderick and Team Discrete’s film came up one vote short to Katy-Robin Garton and Team Icelantic’s heartfelt tribute to the mountains.
“Having people appreciate the video meant so much (to us) because of everything that went into it as a team,” said Team Icelantic editor and producer Katy-Robin Garton. “I’ve never experienced such an incredible group of women working together, and it showed, and that’s what carried (the film).”

News: Top Athletes, Industry L News: Top Athletes, Industry Leaders Confirmed For Sony Eye of the Condor 2
- From: media-75233

Description:
La Parva, Chile – Top skiers and industry leaders are scheduled to arrive in La Parva this week for the second annual Sony Eye of the Condor, a week-long film and photography contest. Set in the heart of the Andes, La Parva will play host to athletes including JT Holmes, Julian Carr, Rachel Burks and Drew Tabke, and industry leaders including Chris Davenport, Adam Clark, and Ingrid Backstrom.
“The Eye of the Condor format is full-throttle,” says professional skier JT Holmes. “It's not a long period of time and the competition is fierce, so you have to hustle to get exciting shots, but with the terrain available it all works out. I tend to need a week to decompress after the event.”
While the film and photography competition will be the centerpiece of the event, a collection of industry leaders will also provide a forum for broader discussion during the Eye of the Condor Actions Sports Symposium. Industry leaders such as Chris Davenport, Dave Fields and Julian Carr will offer their insights on the roll that action and adventure sports play in the world at large.
“Yes, Eye of the Condor is about teams producing the best short film and photography portfolio, but it’s also a celebration of skiing and mountain culture,” says La Parva Director of Corporate Sales and Marketing Rodrigo Medina. “It’s a perfect way to share Chilean ski culture with the rest of the world.”

News: Eye Of The Condor Return News: Eye Of The Condor Returns To Ski La Parva, Partners With IF3
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Members of Dubsatch Collective blast through powder in 2011 at Ski La Parva in Chile during the Eye Of The Condor film and photo competition.
SANTIAGO, CHILE — After an extremely successful event in 2011, Ski La Parva is pleased to announce the return of Sony Eye of the Condor — a weeklong film and photo competition set in the Andes. Presented by Sony, Subaru Chile and Delta Airlines, Sony Eye of the Condor 2 will showcase elite athletes and photographers from around the world from July 27 to August 4, 2012. A new partnership with IF3 will provide increased media distribution for teams and brands, as well as the first ever IF3 Film Festival La Parva/Chile in Santiago. An all-star panel of judges — including Ingrid Backstrom and Chris Davenport — and athletes including the K2 Factory Team — will surely set a high benchmark for what’s to come in the 2012/2013 season.
“With the direction of the sport focusing on digital media and quality of production, we have created a venue for athletes and brands to showcase their highest quality work in a cultivating environment,” says Ski La Parva’s Director of Corporate Sales and Marketing Rodrigo Medina. “Not only does Sony Eye of the Condor provide a great outlet for competitors, the laid back Chilean atmosphere provides a great platform for industry leaders to discuss the state of the sport.”
In addition to the competition, which will award cash prizes to the best video and photography portfolio, Sony Eye of the Condor will support local arts, with a photography exhibition showcasing local talent. The event will also provide a forum for broader discussion with seminars, photo retrospectives and other events that seek to examine the roll that action sports and photography play in society at large.
“The Eye of the Condor is such an awesome event because it celebrates the creativity in skiing; it's really open to interpretation and gives teams the freedom to show how much fun skiing is in whichever way they choose.” Says judge Ingrid Backstrom. “Plus to have the film and photos set against such an insane backdrop way up in the Andes guarantees some truly stunning imagery”
The week of festivities will culminate in the booming metropolis of Santiago de Chile at the first annual IF3 La Parva/Chile. The one night film festival will celebrate the global Freeskiing film community, complete with athlete autograph sessions, film screenings, vendors, and live music. The winning films and photos from Sony Eye of The Condor will be showcased around the globe at IF3 International Film Festivals, including Montreal, Quebec; Annecy France; and Innsbruck Austria. “We are extremely excited about our new partnership with IF3, we feel it’s going to show the international community the beauty and uniqueness of the Chilean ski community,” says Medina.
“The Eye of the Condor competition is an amazing event” says Team Discrete (2011 EOTC People’s Choice Award) member and 2012 Red Bull Cold Rush Champion Rachel Burks “It's rad, because all the teams are staying in the same area, dining together, running into each other on the slopes — it’s the perfect competition atmosphere.”

Interview: Ingrid Backstrom's Interview: Ingrid Backstrom's Season Is A World Tour
- From: jeremybenson

Description:
Ingrid Backstrom hikes to her line in Chamonix, France. Photo by Adam Clark.
If you’re a skier then you’ve probably heard of Ingrid Backstrom. The big-mountain skiing phenomenon cut her teeth on the slopes of Crystal Mountain, Wash., and honed her skills on the steeps at Squaw Valley, Calif. For the past eight years Ingrid has filmed with Matchstick Productions, 5 of those years she’s taken home the Powder Video Award for Best Female Performance.
As one of the premier big-mountain skiers in the world, she is often on the road for photo shoots, expeditions, and movie premieres. TetonGravity.com caught up with Ingrid while she was skiing at Points North Heli in Cordova, Alaska.
Teton Gravity Research: How was your winter?
Ingrid Backstrom: My winter was really fun. Of course there is always stuff I wish I could have done or could have been more productive or gotten more sunny days and all that, but overall I had a great time, got to ski a lot of days, and went to some amazing places. So I am really stoked on my winter. And finishing up healthy is always the goal. So it’s OK to have left some stuff on the table. That’s more important to me these days.
TGR: Where are you now?
Backstrom: I’m in Cordova, Alaska! I got to come here for a Volkl Fantasy Camp, where Dash Longe and I are skiing with the contest winners. Although, I’m pretty sure both Dash and I feel like we won at this point. It’s certainly been a fantasy week.
TGR: Where’d you spend your time this season?
Backstrom: I got to hang out in Squaw Valley at home for a few weeks, which is always great. Also in Chamonix, Crystal Mountain, Whistler, and Alyeska in Girdwood, Alaska.
TGR: In January you took your first trip to Chamonix, did it live up to your expectations?
Backstrom: I can safely say it blew my expectations out of the water. I was expecting it to be cool, but for some reason I just only had pictured all of the scary gnar and was prepared to be on guard the whole time. Instead, we skied pow runs to the valley in really safe conditions, with chamois and ibex sightings. I only wore a harness one time!
Ingrid rips it up in Chamonix. Photo by Adam Clark.
TGR: After months on the road, do you look forward to some down time, not traveling for a bit?
Backstrom: Yes, for sure! I absolutely love being in Squaw Valley, seeing my friends and enjoying Tahoe. Being at home takes on a whole new meaning when you live out of a bag so much — that’s great, too, but I start really missing my friends and my bed.
TGR: Last year you were featured in MSP’s the Sherpa’s movie, who’d you film with this year?
Backstrom: I filmed with Matchstick on two trips. I don’t know where the winter went, it seemed like it started late and ended early this year! But I’m honored that they wanted to still film with me, I love skiing with all those guys.
TGR: Any plans for the summer, skiing, etc?
Backstrom: I am really excited to be going to Chile for a few things at the end of July. I get to be a judge at the Eye of the Condor event in La Parva, which was so fun last year--plus I will be coaching a women’s camp in La Parva in August followed by [Chris] Davenport’s freeskiing camp in Portillo.
TGR: Could you tell us about the women’s camp in La Parva?
Backstrom: I’m really excited to be partnering with Powder Quest to do a women’s ski camp in La Parva. It will be a small group and it’s the perfect place to ski, relax, and enjoy the culture. We still have spots open also if you know any women who love to ski!
TGR: Your brother Ralph crushed it on the Freeride World Tour this year and has been filming with TGR, is it genetics or something in the water that made you and your brothers such incredible athletes?
Backstrom: Ralph is amazing — of course I have always known that he is the best snowboarder out there but it’s so great to see all of his hard work pay off with such a great year. I’m simultaneously proud of him and in awe of him. I have to give most of the credit to my parents. They are so amazing.
TGR: In addition to being an athlete, what other types of things do you do for your sponsors?
Backstrom: I try to get involved with product feedback and R&D whenever possible — The North Face is really amazing about involving the athletes at every step of the process and it’s so fun to learn more about what goes into making good products. I’ve had some awesome opportunities — really fun product testing trips, speaking engagements, and other stuff that I never thought I would be doing when I wanted to be a skier.
TGR: Where do you see yourself and what do you plan to be doing five to 10 years down the road?
Backstrom: That’s a hard one — hopefully still skiing, involved in the ski and outdoor industry in some way, perhaps in a different capacity, and maybe traveling a bit less. - Blog post

News: Lars Chickering-Ayers, S News: Lars Chickering-Ayers, Sole Diaz Win FWT Chilean Freeskiing Championships
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
August 21, 2011
From Mountain Sports International:
Words: Keith Carlsen/MSI
VALLE EL ARPA, CHILE — Three days ago, the 25-minute 4x4 road to Ski Arpa was covered in a snow-dirt soup. Now, after the finals of The North Face Chilean Freeskiing Championships, it’s paved with some of the best ski lines the remote South American cat skiing operation has ever witnessed. Freeskiing’s elite gathered this week in Los Andes, Chile, and made summer skiing history with Lars Chickering-Ayers and Sole Diaz taking the top spots on the podium.
“I like turning where the mountain makes you turn and when you’re on big mountain terrain, that’s how I ski,” said Chickering-Ayers, the veteran champion.
In the men’s field, skiing talent rivaled some of the best this tour has ever seen. Mad River Glen’s Lars Chickering-Ayers took the win with a run that lasted six turns and 45 seconds. Chickering-Ayers’ run was total commitment; he dropped fast out of the gate into an air that covered nearly 40-vertical feet of distance down the slope, hit a turn in soft snow, sailed smoothly through two more high speed turns and nailed a three on the money booter at the bottom. Rounding out the stout men’s field, were Josh Daiek, of Kirkwood, Calif., in second with a huge mid-slope three, and Kevin O’Meara of Squaw Valley, Calif., in third with one of the biggest airs off the cliff just below the start.
Chilean Freeskiing Championships finals highlight video:
This competition’s women’s field was the most consistently strong and clean in FWT history. Every woman knew her line, charged it, and for the most part, stomped landings.
“I am so stoked for my win in Chile; I am the only Chilean woman in the comp and I won,” said an excited Sole Diaz. “I actually changed my run choice in the gate. I saw a couple of other girls do a new line and I knew I could ski it better.”
In a proud moment on her home country’s turf, La Parva, Chile, local Sole Diaz, took the win by a full two points over two-time tour champion Angel Collinson of Snowbird, UT. Diaz skied similarly to Chickering-Ayers descending straight down the fall-line with no hesitation and dropping air upon air with style, fluidity and control. Rounding out the women’s podium was Crystal Wright, of Jackson, Wyo., with her well-known grace and strength.
Setting the standard for the season 2012 Backcountry.com Sickbird Award, former Junior Freeskiing Champion Leo Ahrens, dropped an underflip 540 off the top booter, sticking his incredulous high-speed switch landing into the bowl before another massive three mid-venue.
With helicopters flying overhead, cat and snowmobiles shuttling skiers to the top of the mountain, this event was the complete package. And being South America in August, there were a few challenges related to weather and snowpack. The intended day two venue for the Chilean Freeskiing Championships — Stairway to Heaven — was kept closed until inspection today to preserve the snow quality. Due to overnight winds that scoured the ridge tops, competition director Bryan Barlow felt it necessary for the athletes to get a feel for the venue. When they entered the venue today, they discovered the snow coverage was too thin to safely ski the way they wanted to in the venue. The athletes met with Barlow and made a unanimous decision to not ski Stairway to Heaven, and to instead, return to the day one venue, Cornices, for the second run of the competition. Upon returning to Cornices, event organizers determined the higher scoring lines from day one had deteriorated from the impact of ski traffic and became unsafe to ski. Barlow and the athletes realized the competitors who had intended on skiing these lines, now had no opportunity to inspect new lines, probe landings, and check take-offs. Therefore event organizers made it optional for all qualified skiers to compete in the changed finals venue and made it an optional day, which would make it a best of two runs. Several competitors, who had established a lead with their day-one lines, chose not to compete, letting their day one score stand.
“Our Chilean Freeskiing Championships unofficially became the Chile Challenge,” said head judge Jim Norm Jack. “Conditions on the final face were too shallow and boney to provide a venue suitable for this level of competition. Safety being paramount, we opted to move back to Cornices. The athletes came together with the event organizers to put on one of the most exciting and spirited events we have ever seen. Relaxed and stoked, the skiers threw down dynamic runs. Today was a great celebration in the mountains and represented the full essence of our sport.”

Earlier we posted the two winning edits from the Eye Of The Condor video competition that took place July 30 to Aug. 5, 2011 in La Parva Chile. Below are the three runners up from teams Klint, K2 and Optimus Prime.
Team Klint's video is shot by Ben Grunow and features powder and jib skiing by Tanner Rainville, Brian Kish and Will Hibbs.
Pep Fujas, Sean Pettit and Andy Mahre of team K2 take a humorous angle with their video entry.
Team Optimus Prime created a mostly point of view video that features kite skiing, wing suits and dudes playing the drinking game "quarters." Enjoy.

This snow report from Perisher, Australia says Perisher received 27cm (10.5 in) overnight and looks like some good powder. Nothing epic, but it should spice up the groomers (not that the day glo outerwear doesn't spice it up enough).
Thredbo, Australia has the same story as Perisher. New snow, they recorded 60cm (23 in.) in 48 hours. This video has some better riding showcasing one snowboarder takin a few sidehits and logging some face shots.
Treble Cone, New Zealand is lookin awesome. This Go Pro edit pretty much says it all, powder and cliff drops for days!
This little edit from Las Lenas, Argentina gives a little insight into daily operations and what goes on at the mountain during a typical snow day. People skiing and riding in near white out conditions mixed in with shots of the resort buildings and lifties workin the chairs. Argentina looks like a good spot to go right now.
Man they know how to rock in Chapelco, Argentina. The video is a short edit of groomer groomer and chairlift riding from July 2nd, their opening day.
This video from La Parva, Chile really makes me feel like going south of the border. They've got some fun angles and good looking snow.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 6th, 2009
CHOPO DIAZ AND JACQUI EDGERLY WIN THE NORTH FACE SOUTH AMERICAN FREESKIING CHAMPIONSHIPS PRESENTED BY SMIRNOFF
From flip-flops to powder, world’s best freeskiers pioneer exciting new lines on McConkey’s venue at La Parva, Chile, during the first stop of the 2010 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour
La Parva, Chile, September 5, 2009—During the First Annual The North Face South American Freeskiing Championships, an international field of the world’s best freeskiers conquered McConkey’s run, South America's finest competition venue. With nearly a foot of fresh snow, athletes from the Untied States, France, Canada, Chile, Argentina, and Switzerland congregated to enjoy a rare opportunity to ski and compete during North America’s summer months for a $10,000 cash purse.
With the top three men’s final scores separated by less than half a point, competition was fierce. But on his home terrain, 26-year-old Chopo Diaz (CHL) rose to the top as the clear winner with 40.88 points. He charged the venue with the fastest line of the day—also earning the coveted Sickbird award with his creative, aggressive blend of two large, stylish airs with stomped landings. On his heels, 2009 FWT Champion Julien Lopez (FRA) skied an equally aggressive fall-line run with his signature massive spread eagle in the crux of the venue, finishing just two-tenths behind Diaz. Rounding out the international podium, Romain Bellon (SWZ) pioneered an original line with fluid style, finishing less than a half point off the lead.
“It was an honor to have the entire international freeskiing community at my home mountain,” said Diaz. “I’m honored to be champion, but I would have loved to ski a second run.”
Due to 100mph winds pummeling the venue on Saturday morning, the second day of the SAFC was unfortunately cancelled.
“I’m really happy for Chopo,” said Lopez. “Second is good, but I like to be first. I was really happy with the venue, but I wanted to ski one more run.”
Female freeskiing veteran Jacqui Edgerly (USA) won her first competition with a fluid, aggressive line with two solid airs. Jess McMillan, 2007 FWT World Champion, returned to competition with intent to win, taking six airs, skiing with energy and aggression, to finish just a half point off the lead. Chopo Diaz’s sister and local ripper Soledad Diaz, followed in her brother’s footsteps to show everyone that she is a legitimate competitor. The local favorite skied the fastest line of the female competitors.
“The freesking movement has truly returned to South America,” said Rodrigo Medina, La Parva’s marketing director who stunt-doubled as the competition’s forerunner. “The international freeskiing community’s presence in Chile was both an honor and a long time coming. We have enjoyed hosting this prestigious event and the first stop of the FWT and look forward to many more in the years to come.”
A live produced HD webcast of the entire competition will be rebroadcast later this week. For broadcast times, video coverage, photos, interviews, athlete profiles and more, visit the official website of competitive big mountain skiing: www.freeskiingworldtour.com

Description:
Salt Lake City, UT, July 24, 2009 – Mountain Sports International (MSI) announced today the 2010 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour (FWT) schedule includes two new international events in Chile and Canada with the World Tour finals and Championships at Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort in Utah.
Now in its 12th year, the Subaru FWT is the largest and longest running competitive Big Mountain Freeskiing tour in the history of the sport. The Subaru FWT features over $100,000 in prize money and an unprecedented six stops, including a Freeskiing World Tour Qualifier.
Athlete Registration for South America Only begins August 3, 2009 at 1 PM MST at www.freeskiingworldtour.com
“With the addition of two international stops, over $100,000 in prize money, and continuous live coverage, the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour is stronger than ever,” said Mountain Sport International President Adam Comey. “And to honor our good friend and legendary skier Shane McConkey—who founded this sport and the IFSA—the overall World Tour champions will be awarded with the McConkey Cup. This sport was his vision and we intend to keep it thriving for years to come.”
”Sponsoring the Freeskiing World Tour remains a natural fit for Subaru,” notes Tim Mahoney, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Subaru of America, Inc. “Subaru owners tend to be adventure seekers and since our vehicles are undaunted by winter weather and snowy mountain passes, these events are a perfect showcase for us.”
The 2010 FWT will kick off in less than six weeks in La Parva, Chile, at The North Face South American Freeskiing Championships, where the world’s best freeskiers will get a unique chance to compete during the summer.
“After 12 years we’re excited to have the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour back to South America,” said La Parva Ski Resort Marketing Director Rodrigo Medina. “We truly believe the La Parva venues will challenge the competitors and the Chilean mountains and people will be a great fit with the other FWT stops.”
Back in North America in January, the tour continues with another new event, the Canadian Freeskiing Championships, at British Columbia’s renowned Revelstoke Mountain Resort (RMR).
“We are ecstatic to be hosting the Freeskiing World Tour for the next three years and feel this is a significant opportunity for both Revelstoke Mountain Resort (RMR) and our community, said RMR COO Rod Kessler. “Holding this event in Revelstoke underscores our presence in the global ski industry and is recognition by the freeskiing community that RMR is one of the most sought-after resort destinations worldwide.”
The tour marches on to the notorious steeps of Crested Butte, Colorado, and then onto the famed Cirque at Kirkwood, California. Long known as the premiere venue on the Subaru FWT, Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort will host the 2010 Subaru Freeskiing World Championships, with the tour leaders battling for top positions in the final runs of the year down the infamous North Baldy.
“I feel like our sport has taken a huge evolutionary jump forward,” said 2009 women's overall Freeskiing World Tour Champion Crystal Wright. “The level of competition from both the men and women has progressed to unexpected new heights. Revelstoke and La Parva are awesome venues and will bring international legitimacy to the tour. And with the live webcasting more people than ever are learning about our sport. This is going to be a big year.”
