Well, these guys are back charging in Las Lenas again. Jordi Tenas, Txema Trull and Adria Millan dropped a bunch of POV edits from South America last year around this time. Now they’re back crushing the same lines, albeit with what looks like a thinner snowpack. These three are pretty damn good at making point of view videos and that is because they are actually good at skiing and editing. Keep it up!

Jordi Tenas, Txema Trull, and Adrià Millan seem to have their annual Las Lenas trip pretty dialed. Note the proximity of their lodging and the straight-to-the-couloir modus operandi. We've had hot and dry weather all summer in the Rockies, and refreshing this page over and over has me itching for a one-way ticket to Argentina.

  • News: Subaru Freeskiing World News: Subaru Freeskiing World Tour And Swatch Freeride World Tour Partner

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

Freeskiing World Tour, Freeride World Tour Partner
World Tours join for first combined stop of the Swatch Freeride & Freeskiing World Tour Jan. 4-11 in Revelstoke, British Columbia.

Snowboarding added to Revelstoke with athletes from the Freeride World Tour and The North Face Masters.

Salt Lake City, Utah – North American-based Subaru Freeskiing World Tour and European-based Swatch Freeride World Tour have joined to establish a new global competitive big mountain freeskiing and snowboarding structure, with stops stretching from Revelstoke, British Columbia, to Verbier, Switzerland. The move comes after years of both tours experiencing incredible growth in both athlete and sponsorship participation.

“This is the natural next step in the evolution of a long-term partnership between both tours,” said Adam Comey, president of Salt Lake City-based Mountain Sports International, the company that owns the Freeskiing World Tour. “This is a global sport with a common culture and passion for big mountain riding and a global strategy will best serve the athletes, events, and tour sponsors.”

Freeride World Tour organizers are in complete agreement.

“The 2012 season will be the next step in globalizing freeride,” said Nicholas Hale Woods, founder of the Swatch Freeride World Tour.  “We’re extremely pleased to co-organize an event together with MSI in Revelstoke in 2012, and we’ will continue working ever closer with MSI to further align our events and activities in 2013.”

In 2012, the tours will operate independently as they have in the past, with a joint event in Revelstoke, British Columbia, in January, followed by top Subaru Freeskiing World Tour and The North Face Masters athletes joining the Freeride athletes again at season’s end in Verbier, Switzerland, for the Swatch Verbier Extreme, featuring a $32,000 prize purse.

“Although Revelstoke Mountain Resort is expanding into the family market, our heart and soul is big mountain skiing and riding,” said Revelstoke Mountain Resort Chief Operating Officer, Rod Kessler. “The combination of the Swatch Freeride Tour and the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour marks a historic event amongst the Snow Sports industry. Revelstoke Mountain Resort and the Revelstoke Accommodation Association is excited to host the world’s top big mountain ski and snowboard athletes in January 2012. Our goal is to deliver an unforgettable experience to both athletes and guests alike, while showcasing Revelstoke’s unparalleled terrain, snow conditions, and hospitality.”

In addition to event collaboration, the two tours will also follow a unified global event tier and points system, now giving athletes the chance to enter in small, open events that feed directly to the world’s biggest freeskiing championships. Events will be grouped as 5-Star, 4-Star, or 3-Star categories: 5-star events will include Freeskiing World Tour and Freeride World Tour main events. 4-Star events will include World Tour Qualifiers and long-standing regional events such as Taos and Red Mountain.  3-Star events include competitions with big, open fields, first-time competitors, and lower prize money such as the Ski the East Tour.

The official 2011-12 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour season started this summer in Las Lenas at the Argentinean Freeskiing Championships (Stop #1), then moved to Ski Arpa in Los Andes at the Chilean Freeskiing Championships (Stop #2). The Swatch Freeride & Freeskiing World Tour Revelstoke 2012, Jan 4-11, will be Stop #3 on the Subaru FWT. Twenty-five pre-qualified Freeskiing World Tour athletes will join 25 pre-qualified Freeride World Tour athletes. Fifteen open spots are up for grabs in the qualifier event boasting upwards of 80 freeskiing athletes. Twelve snowboarding athletes from The North Face Masters will join 12 riders from the Freeride World Tour for the snowboarding category of the event.

“By partnering with the Freeride World Tour we are going to make it more compelling for fans around the world to follow both tours and other independent stops, as their favorite athletes gain points.  The event structure and points system will create a clear path and added exposure for all aspiring big mountain skiers and snowboarders,” said FWT event director Bryan Barlow. “The strategy for both tours has always been to grow the sport and keep it moving in the right direction, and I am looking forward to developing our partnership and events alike.”

The Subaru Freeskiing World Tour will continue on to Crested Butte, Colorado, Kirkwood, California, and Snowbird, Utah. An overall Subaru Freeskiing World Tour Champion will be crowned at the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour Championships at Snowbird.

  • Siblings John and Angel Collin Siblings John and Angel Collinson Take On Freeskiing

    • From: johnclarydavies
    • Description:

      John and Angel Collinson

      October 28, 2011

      — John Clary Davies

In May 2009, Angel Collinson realized ski racing wasn’t fun anymore. She had finished the season ranked high and had been invited to camps by the U.S. Ski Team, but decided she was ready to move on. Angel just wasn’t sure how.

“I still loved skiing,” said Collinson, now 21, “and my brother, who had done the Junior Freeskiing Tour, was like, ‘you got to try this; you’ll love it.’  So I signed up.”

John and Angel aren’t typical siblings. They are Black Diamond, North Face, Smith Optics and Backcountry.com teammates, and they are training, travel and ski partners. They’re roommates and friends.

Right now, they are also both building a house, along with their parents, at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon. Once it’s finished, Angel and John will live there until their parents retire. In the meantime, they’ll continue staying where they grew up, in Snowbird’s employee housing quarters (though the two no longer share a bunk bed in a 5-foot by 12-foot room). When they were kids, their father worked for Snowbird’s snow safety department, while in the winter their mom taught Angel and John and four other students, from kindergarten to twelfth grade, in a one-room school. In the fall and spring, the kids would travel down Little Cottonwood Canyon and attend public school.

“When I was growing up I realized how awesome it was because I’d be in the valley for public school and be like, ‘man it kind of sucks down here; there are no mountains to play in,’” said 19-year-old John. “We were running around in the woods and living the mountain-man lifestyle. The setting for both of us was perfect for our endeavors in skiing and climbing.”

      Angel Collinson Skis Powder

Angel Collinson rips a powder turn.

After taking her brother’s advice, Angel won the 2010 Freeskiing World Tour title the winter after quitting the race team. Then, she became just the third woman to back her title up by taking it again in 2011. This season, Angel is taking time off from the University of Utah, where she was pursuing a degree in environmental law, to put all her efforts toward skiing. She says she has only been able to dedicate about 40 percent to 50 percent of her time to skiing in the past, and wants to make the most of the opportunities the sport presents.

“I’m changing my identity because I’ve always thought of myself as an academic,” said Angel. “Now I’m calling myself a professional athlete. When I think that’s actually what I’ll be doing and making a living off of, that’s really exciting. To conceptualize myself in that role is neat.”

Angel says she and her brother feed off of each other’s skiing. She is a more technical skier from her background in racing, but John is better in the air.

“He’s a lot more playful with features and throws tricks a lot more and he’s teaching me that,” said Angel. “And sometimes he’ll be skiing and I’ll make a comment — keep your hands up more, or drop your hip — we’ll bounce ideas off each other.”

      John Collinson

      John Collinson airs a cliff.

John, like Angel, has experienced plenty of early success. At age 4, he summited Mount Rainier, and by age 17, he had become the youngest person to climb the Seven Summits. In all, he has climbed over 200 mountains. He is also a part of the Dubsatch Collective, a group of young skiers, including Nate Cahoon, Leo Ahrens, Sam Cohen, Grant Howard, and Andrew Pollard, who came of age skiing Little Cottonwood Canyon together. John won the overall Junior Freeski World Tour in 2010 and took second (as did Angel) in this summer’s Red Bull Powder Disorder in Las Lenas, Argentina.

“We’re really excited to have started working with them at such a young age and feel like both of these guys are the future of freeskiing,” said Black Diamond Team Manager TJ Kolanko. “I think that they have just scratched the surface and the sky’s the limit for both of them.”

Both Collinsons want to film this winter and compete when they can. Inevitably, they’ll end up back in Little Cottonwood Canyon, waking up to the 7 a.m. bomb squad and skiing Snowbird.

“Big mountain skiing is how [we] view the world,” said Angel. “Up at Snowbird, in this utopia… you watch it snow when you’re making breakfast and you get the feeling of what every day has in store for you. It’s a very intimate place to ski and be in nature and be in the mountains.”

      Crystal Wright

      October 24, 2011

      — Brigid Mander

Fall is not the season to sit on the couch hungover, waiting for the snow. Fall is a time of preparation. It’s get-ready-for-go-time season, and there is only one place to be: Mountain Athlete in Jackson, Wyoming. Inside the warehouse turned gym, under the watchful eye of Freeskiing World Tour champion Crystal Wright, badass pros mingle with recreational athletes and everyone shares a common goal — to up their game.

Four days a week, with death metal cranking in the background, Wright strolls around her ski conditioning classes, observing and encouraging the athletes. Her meassage: “You think you are strong, but you are not strong. Not strong enough, and you need to train. Hard.” The death metal serves a dual purpose: to help motivate the struggling crew in front of her and to drown out the sounds of suffering.

Wright has won the FWT twice, made the podium plenty, and is just back from winning this season’s first FWT competition, the Red Bull Powder Disorder in Las Lenas, Argentina.

To have gained such a large following among Jackson athletes after just a couple of seasons working as a personal trainer is no small feat. The core Jackson athletes are some of the toughest and cockiest around. But professional competitors, ski movie stars, and even those who make the ski movies are jumping when she says jump, faces contorted with effort.

“Her course is the real deal,” Teton Gravity Research’s supervising producer Greg Epstein said. “I'm worked after every [class]; it has definitely improved my overall core fitness levels.”

Anyone who gives Wright 60 minutes of their life receives an all-over body ache accompanied by a wake-up call.

“So many people have the attitude that they don’t need to train, and they are strong enough, and then all these skiers come to class and try to keep up,” Wright said. “The big picture is injury prevention. For example, around 50 percent of ACL tears can be avoided by strength training — but it goes to a whole other level for us, in competing and skiing big lines. To be able to really land big airs strong, to ski out of lines looking strong, all day long, you have to train.”

It's something that Wright would like to see change across the board in the freeskiing world.

“We’re doing this dangerous sport, and so few train for it," Wright said. "So many athletes out there could ski so much better.”

Wright, who raced for the University of Montana and has trained with the U.S. Ski Team, doesn’t cut herself any slack either. With a full big mountain competition season coming up, she does her own intense gym workouts four days a week, along with biking, hiking and climbing. It’s paid off for her throughout her ski career, so chances are she’s looking at another successful season — all while creating a few more skiers that can keep up with her on the snow.

When Americans ski deep powder snow they tend to give a "WOOT! WOOT!" or a "YEAAAAAH!" often ending the run with an exhausted "UUUUUGGHHHHH!" For Jordi Tenas and Txema Trull, who, as commenter "russian salad' pointed out, speak Catalan,  it's "BWAH! BWAH!" all day long as they descend the slopes of Las Lenas. In the above clip Tenas and Trull get top to bottom fresh right off the Ts Marte chairlift. In the below clip, Tenas gets "BWAH!" solo as he skis a Las Lenas couloir. October 12, 2011

      — Dan Kostrzewski

Jackson, Wyoming local Lynsey Dyer has traveled far from her roots in the Sun Valley race program to become one of skiing’s most respected and inspiring female athletes. With bold, beautiful lines captured on film and in print she has earned widespread respect and recognition that culminated with Powder Magazine’s Female Skier of the Year award in 2010. Off the hill, Lynsey has also exhibited a creative side using her artistic talents to design graphic artwork for First Ascent and land one of her photographs in National Geographic Magazine. Tetongravity.com caught up with Lynsey to talk about her recent trips, current segments and geopolitical stories in between international flights to thrilling locations.

Tetongravity.com: What was the most inspiring trip you took this past season?

Lynsey Dyer: Lel Tone and I got to go to Kashmir and ski on the disputed border of India and Pakistan in a red A-star helicopter. It blew my mind the fact that there are guys with guns on both sides and yet we are waving this white flag that we were just there to ski powder. So it was the first time that I saw my sport become something bigger than itself in that both side were opinionated in this war that has gone on for a ridiculous amount of time and yet they could all celebrate together and lighten up for a moment when it came to powder skiing, which I though was significant in that a sport could bring two opposing sides together even just for a moment. So it was really inspiring. I was very proud of skiing on that trip.

What was that experience like skiing in the Gulmarg region?

We got a couple of runs at 5,000 meters and they were first descents, which was really fun. We named a run Uncle Eddie (after Eddie Bauer), which was a treat. It is just completely untouched there. Any run in the past they have had to hike to it and this was the first year they have allowed helicopters out there so the possibilities were just endless.

Do they have anything like the concept of heli tenure in India?

Well, you’re not supposed to go into Pakistan but the border is so foggy that we definitely ventured over. We actually peed in Pakistan and that was a highlight.

I mean, what a crazy opportunity, right? To go on a trip where you have five days to try and get good ski footage is difficult, right? And we had one sunny day with safe conditions and it was an epic day, a day that none of us will forget.

And then ending up and skiing at 5,000 meters … the only way we would know how high we were getting was the pilot would put on an oxygen mask and that was how we knew it was high.

We asked, “where is ours?” and he replied, “get out.”

      Lynsey Dyer skis

      Was it an older machine?

No it was a beautiful A-star from New Zealand and a great crew and guides and a great journey. It ended up being seventy clicks from where they found Osama, so we were right in there.

In the heart of the geopolitical zone?

      Yeah.

So the other project you worked on was with the Rocky Mountain Sherpas for the film “All.I.Can”?

      That’s right.

Why did you decide to get involved with that project?

They are incredible people and they are very passionate about what they do and they are on the cutting edge of ski film. This will not be just another ski-porn film. This will be the most beautifully shot and directed pieces of not only ski film but showing the natural world.

Because of the Cineflex they use — which is a ridiculously expensive stabilizing device for shooting from the helicopter — it is going to look a lot more like “Planet Earth,” on that scale, rather than a normal ski movie.

As well as having a message, which I feel like a lot of ski films don’t, and it’s a very powerful message about environmentalism, but in a very inspiring way because these guys are so creative and dedicated and these guys are so over the top and dedicated in all aspects. So I am honored to be part of what the ski industry is calling the best ski film of the last ten years.

So, what specifically about the environmental message resonated with you?

Really capturing the beauty. These guys are famous for their timelapses and showing certain parts of the cycle of life and showing the earth as a living being, breathing through its  rivers and through the cycles of winter to summer to spring. And just beautiful imagery of even making logging look beautiful.

It’s not opinionated it’s just putting it out there for the viewer to decide it’s not preaching anything but it is so inspiring that I think my goal with skiing is inspiring people to go outside and to make it accessible to the point where people think if she can do it, I can do it. And so I feel like this film captures all that with absolute beauty.

What are you most excited about looking forward?

Right now we are headed to South America, we are filming with Sweetgrass Productions in Portillo and from there I go straight to Las Lenas, hopefully with Eddie Bauer. And from there I can’t say, I’ve been working with Outside Television a lot and from there who knows — hopefully I’ll get more time at home in Jackson but you never know what the season will bring. It’s always at the last minute and that’s part of the adventure.

This is epic! Straight up. Not trying to throw that term around. But the first minute of this Web edit is what skiing is all about: a perfect slope of powder for you and your friends to go nuts on. Maybe it's the whimsical sounds of Sigur Rose and their song "Hoppipolla" that amplifies this spectacle, but scoring a line like the first one in this video is a special thing. It's the stuff that dreams are made of.

  • News: Freeskiing World Tour Da News: Freeskiing World Tour Day 1 Las Lenas Results And Video

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

It's winter in the southern hemisphere and freeskiers are taking advantage of the snow. The Subaru Freeskiing World Tour kicked off yesterday in Las Lenas, Argentina, with a two-day invite-only event called the Red Bull Powder Disorder. The format of the competition remains the same as other FWT events, except athletes must hit one of several man-made kickers as they descend the mountain. Although the competition is on a weather hold today, you can watch video from Day 1 above. Read the press release and results below.

From the Freeskiing World Tour's press release yesterday:

This morning thirty-six of the world’s best skiers assembled atop Las Lenas’ famed run, Eduardo’s, looking down on a 2,000-vertical-foot, never-before-seen mix of sculpted booters and natural big mountain terrain. Unlike many other competitions involving built jumps, today’s venue featured hardpack, windcrust, and crud. Despite the conditions, the invited athletes proved why they are the biggest names in international professional big mountain freeskiing.

Guerlain Chicherit (FRA) dominated the men’s field with a huge front flip off the mandatory top air, landing perfectly on his feet, before heading to a 30-foot cliff drop and a front flip off the bottom kicker and into the finish line with a 38.27, the top score of the day.

On his heels, John Collinson (USA) delivered his best ever competition run (31.23 points), with a left side 3 off the mandatory top air, a straight air off the second official jump, and smooth 3 off an athlete-made kicker, known as the Pepsi-Cola jump because they marked take-off with said soda.

FWT veteran Julien Lopez (FRA) finished third, stomping his line like an American football linebacker: backflip off mandatory air, mute grab off second official air, stomped 30-foot cliff drop (same as Chicherit’s), and three more airs in the bottom section.

Crystal Wright (USA), in her first competition since a broken fibula, proved with her strength, that even though there was a focus on jumps and tricks, that fast and fluid still wins the game (29.47 points). “I know that it always goes back to the basics and conditions and to not slow down on the entire venue,” she said.

Angel Collinson (USA), 2011 overall FWT winner, applied a similar approach. Starting with a spread eagle crotch grab – a la judge Brant Moles circa ’97 – Collinson laid her signature picture perfect turns down the huge Eduardo’s face, dropping airs all the while (27.50).

Rebecca Selig (USA), known in the past for her aggressive style that often ends in dramatic crashes, held it together like the pro she is, sliding into third (26.07 points).

Yes, former FWT world champion and decade-long Matchstick Productions film star, Ingrid Backstrom, stepped into the gate today with a humble, but proud attitude. She skied strong and solid and placed 5th in her first contest since 2004.

      Story From Freeskiingworldtour.com

"The Subaru Freeskiing World Tour will never be the same. For the first time in the tour’s 15-year history, man-made, mandatory slopestyle jumps will be incorporated into the 2012 season’s first event, the Red Bull Powder Disorder. Athletes from around the globe have made the August pilgrimage to the storied slopes of Las Leñas, Argentina. The names are here. The snow is here. The media is here. The stage is set for one of the most historic starts to the longest running competitive freeskiing tours in the world.

“It’s fitting that we’re celebrating the start of the 2012 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour in the center of the Andes, where it began 15 years ago,” said Bryan Barlow, competition director for the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour. “The terrain here at Las Leñas is the perfect fit to add the slopestyle element. Not all of the FWT venues are conducive to this format, which makes this stop especially unique.”

Tuesday marks the official registration and venue inspection day on the 2,000-vertical-foot face, known as Eduardos, that holds a consistent, 40-degree pitch. Unlike last year, however, skiers won’t just be looking at the terrain in terms of powder turns and cliff drops. This year, local event producers are working with key athletes to build three different jumps on the face. In meetings today with heavy hitters from MSI, Big Powder, Red Bull, and Las Leñas, the consensus was made that the first jump would be made mandatory and the second two would be optional. All of the athletes are pumped and ready to throw down with this added element."

In the high desert of South America, winter takes hold, devouring bleached bones and abandoned shacks. Into these most inhospitable of lands, a handful of drifters emerge from the whiteout, ready to cast their lot on forsaken peaks both merciless and magnificent. Venturing beyond the frontiers of most mountain films, Solitaire is backcountry skiing forged in the tradition of Western cinema. Born in the spires of Argentina’s legendary Las Lenas, a lonely two-year journey begins through an abandoned world, wandering the length of a continent from Peru’s Cordillera Blanca to Chilean Patagonia.

Lost in the winds of snowbound badlands and the blizzards of primordial forests; seen from a horse’s saddle and a paraglider’s wings; ridden on ski and board and telemark...

Solitaire fuses western-inspired tales of backcountry gambles into landscapes never before visited on film.

Shot on location in: Las Lenas, Argentina; Portillo, Chile;Nevados de Chillan, Chile; Patagonia, Chile; Bariloche, Argentina; Caviahue, Argentina; Huaraz, Peru; Iquitos, Peru; Uyuni, Bolivia; and Sajama, Bolivia.

Featuring: Leo Ahrens, JP Auclair, Ryland Bell, Will Cardamone, Johnny Collinson, Forrest Coots, Stephan Drake, Jacqui Edgerly, Chris Erickson, Sebastian Haag, Kip Garre, Atsushi Gomyo, Kim Havell, Eliel Hindert, Erica Laidlaw, Jaime Laidlaw, Kyle Miller, Osamu “Ommu” Okada, Carston Oliver, Alex Paul, Thayne Rich, Dave Rosenbarger, Don Roth, Elyse Saugstad, Aidan Sheahan, Forrest Shearer, Ptor Spricenieks, Thomas Steiner, Drew Stoecklein, Taro Tamai, Jack Tolan… and honoring Arne Backstrom and Kip Garre.

This snow report from Perisher, Australia says Perisher received 27cm (10.5 in) overnight and looks like some good powder. Nothing epic, but it should spice up the groomers (not that the day glo outerwear doesn't spice it up enough).

Thredbo, Australia has the same story as Perisher. New snow, they recorded 60cm (23 in.) in 48 hours. This video has some better riding showcasing one snowboarder takin a few sidehits and logging some face shots.

Treble Cone, New Zealand is lookin awesome. This Go Pro edit pretty much says it all, powder and cliff drops for days!

This little edit from Las Lenas, Argentina gives a little insight into daily operations and what goes on at the mountain during a typical snow day. People skiing and riding in near white out conditions mixed in with shots of the resort buildings and lifties workin the chairs. Argentina looks like a good spot to go right now.

Man they know how to rock in Chapelco, Argentina. The video is a short edit of groomer groomer and chairlift riding from July 2nd, their opening day.

This video from La Parva, Chile really makes me feel like going south of the border. They've got some fun angles and good looking snow.
