Well, here we are in St. Anton Austria! But it doesn't stop there. St. Anton is just our base at a network of ski lifts, gondolas, and trams known as Ski-Arlberg. Included in this network are the villages of Lech, Zurz, Stuben, St. Christoph, and St. Anton, just to name a few. We have spent the majority of our days at Stuben, which is a couple lift rides and a few valleys away from our pad. It offers a bit more backcountry than the other areas via its three older chairlifts. In the past two days we have ended up skiing out two different long valleys to the roads, leaving us nowhere near where we started. Pure adventure skiing with a great crew.

I knew no one at the beginning of this trip one week ago, but I already feel comfortable enough to talk with them about things I can't discuss here. Our posse of nine including Dylan Hood, Tim Durtchi, and Sage Cattabriga-Alosa have all really been soaking in Austria. Biers have been drunk, meat has been eaten, lines have been skied and Deutsch has been attempted to be spoken. It's sunny and were headed to the hill! Over and out, stay tuned.

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

Copper Mountain, CO - The first stop of the 2013 The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS) concluded Sunday in chilly temperatures with variable light conditions at Copper Mountain, Colorado. Over $10,000 in prize money and swag was awarded to the top finishers including The North Face athletes Mike Riddle, of Whistler, BC, and Maddie Bowman, of South Lake Tahoe, CA, who both took first place.

On Saturday, 62 male and 23 female athletes from around the globe including the United States, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, Russia and more skied in a highly competitive qualifier day. The men were divided into three heats with the top four scores in each heat moving on to the finals as well as the next top four male scores. A total of 16 men advanced to Sunday’s final round. Twelve women also progressed to the finals, vying to win the first Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) U.S. event of the season.

Men’s champion Mike Riddle started off his winning run with a left-side double cork 1260 mute grab. He then executed a clean right-side 900 tail grab moving into a left-side 900 opposite Japan grab. An alley-oop flat spin 360 bow-and-arrow-grab led to his final trick, a switch left-side 900 mute grab. The run earned Riddle a high score of 90.

“The PPOS Finals at Copper Mountain went down amazingly well with athletes competing at a top level for any standard,” said PPOS Head Judge Steele Spence with AFP. “This open series format is so important for up-and-coming freeskiers to have the opportunity to compete alongside the pros. In addition, athletes at Copper were able to earn both FIS and AFP points.”

Rounding out the men’s podium in second place was Peter Crook of the British Virgin Islands scoring an 86.4. Finally, U.S. Freeskiing Rookie Team athlete Aaron Blunck out of Crested Butte, Colorado took the third place spot with a score of 84.6.

  • News: Jeremy Jones' Further Se News: Jeremy Jones' Further Series Premieres On Outside Television December 13

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

      Further TV series

(Teton Village, Wyo.) - The award-winning producers from multimedia action sports brand Teton Gravity Research (TGR) have produced a ten-episode original series giving viewers an intense look at the personalities, adventure, drama, and excitement from two years of filming Further with Jeremy Jones. Showcasing some of the greatest snowboarding adventures on the planet, the original TV series will air exclusively on Outside Television, premiering Thursday, December 13 at 9:30pm EST with new episodes each Thursday. Outside will also provide Further fans with dual encore episodes every weekend.

The second installment in the Jeremy Jones trilogy that began with Outside Television's popular series Jeremy Jones' Deeper last year, Further explores some of the world's most remote mountain terrain while continuing Jones' mission to camp deep in the backcountry and on the summits of unridden lines to access near-vertical spines and wide-open powder fields. Join Jeremy and his crew as they push their minds and bodies Further.

“We've always thought this type of riding is perfect for a television series, which allows us to go more in-depth and show viewers more of these trips to tell the full story,” says Jeremy Jones. “We learned what's possible working on Deeper, and we've been able to build upon that experience with Further, both in terms of riding and the overall production.”

“This is exactly the sort of flagship programming we want people to identify with Outside Television,” echoes Rob Faris, senior vice president of programming and production for Outside Television, which has been expanding rapidly through Comcast Xfinity and other systems since June. “The true success of the Jeremy Jones trilogy is the overall quality of story development, characters and production rather than devising action just for the thrill of it. We look forward to continuing this franchise even beyond Deeper and Further and are fortunate to have attracted such world-class partners as Teton Gravity Research and Jeremy Jones.”

Dew Tour to Debut Ski and Snowboard Big Air and Downtown Breckenridge Events

Burr Ridge, III – November 19, 2012 - The Dew Tour today announced the first round of confirmed athletes for the iON Mountain Championships in Breckenridge, Colo., December 13-16. The new Dew Tour will feature the world’s top freestyle skiers and snowboarders as they converge in Breckenridge to kick off the first major event of the winter action sports season.  The only winter event of the bigger, better 2012 Dew Tour will feature more competitions, including ski and snowboard Big Air, as well as a Film Night and concert that will take over downtown Breckenridge.

The iON Mountain Championships will feature the top names in men’s and women’s snowboarding hitting the Dew Tour Superpipe and Slopestyle course.  Olympic gold medalist Shaun White will bring his one-of-a-kind tricks to the Superpipe, while Iouri Podladtchikov and fun-loving Frends Scotty Lago and Jack and Luke Mitrani attempt to keep him off of the podium.  Last year’s Dew Cup winner, Louie Vito, will aim to gain his third consecutive Cup during the winner-takes-all weekend.  Several snowboarders will be splitting their time between hitting features on the Slopestyle course and triple corking in the Dew Tour’s debut Big Air contest.  Mark McMorris, Sebastien Toutant, Torstein Horgmo and Breckenridge local Eric Willett are sure to be pushing the progression of snowboarding as Dew Tour kicks off the 2012-2013 winter season.

Competition will be close on the women’s side, as Superpipe dominator Kelly Clark attempts to defend her Dew Cup champion title.  Gretchen Bleiler, Elena Hight and 2010 Olympic gold medalist Torah Bright will also look to get their seasons started at the top of the podium.  Perennial Slopestyle contender Jamie Anderson will face off against Canadian Spencer O’Brien and a strong international field of up-and-coming women for the Slopestyle Dew Cup.

“I’m really excited to start the season competing at the Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships in Breckenridge,” said Lago. “The riders get one shot at a Dew Cup for the year, and there will be a lot of heavy hitters, so everyone will be bringing our best to the event.”

Freestyle skiing events will see the athletes sizing each other up after an off-season spent training for one of the sport’s biggest stages at the Dew Tour.  Simon Dumont and Tanner Hall will meet in the Superpipe, hoping their experience is enough to overtake Kevin Rolland, the winner of last year’s Dew Cup.  Breckenridge team skier Bobby Brown will attempt to use home slope advantage against Nick Goepper and previous Dew Cup champ Tom Wallisch on the Slopestyle course.  The three will also be among those competing in Big Air.

The pressure will also be on the women as they compete for Dew Cups in Superpipe and Slopestyle.  Canadian Rosalind Groenewoud will aim for the top spot on the podium in Pipe, fending off Maddie Bowman, Brita Sigourney and Jen Hudak.  Slopestyle could be anyone’s game, as Kaya Turski and locals Keri Herman and Emilia Wint lead the top names set to compete at Breckenridge.

The Dew Tour’s new format for 2012 includes an expansion of events throughout the weekend, bringing the action sports and lifestyle festival to Breckenridge.  The world’s best skiers and snowboarders will throw it down on the mountain while the lifts are running, with the spotlight swinging to the Riverwalk Center and downtown area in the evenings, featuring a Film Night recognizing the most influential and progressive films of the season.  The iON Mountain Championships will also include a concert, set to be announced at a later date.

Erme Catino: Within three to four years you have gone from appearing in your first Poor Boyz film to the top of freeskiing. It doesn’t seem like long, but I’m sure it must feel like ages ago – how has the whirlwind been?

Nick Martini: It has been hectic. After I started doing well in competitions everything seemed to kick off… In 2009, I was asked to host an urban trip in my hometown of Boston, for Poor Boyz’s Every Day is a Saturday. Ever since then, things got busy from filming with TGR, Stept, and Poor Boyz, skiing in the Dew Tour, and the injuries – which is how I fell in love with filming.

EC: When you began filming with TGR, and signed with The North Face, the Stept movies took on a whole new level. How have you balanced running Stept while filming segments with TGR and Poor Boyz?

NM: The winters have been insane and full of traveling, which is fun. However, in the summer the production side of things ties me down with editing, so I haven’t been able to spend time at Hood, etc.  There was a time actually when we got so busy, we almost stopped making Stept films, but in 2010 I hurt my knee, and got into filming while I was working on my recovery video blog… I put all of my energy into Stept and our upcoming film Network. After Network, things flew by, all of our riders began coming into the scene with TGR and Pooy Boyz such as Cam Riley and Clayton Vila. Now, things are coming full circle with a bunch of us transitioning to filming full-time again with Stept.

EC: Your Stept crew of Sean Jordan, Clayton Vila, Cam Riley, Shea Flynn among others have all taken off around the same time. What’s that like, and what is a day in the life at the Stept house?

NM: A lot of us grew up skiing together. My brother Alex, initially moved to Boulder to attend The University of Colorado and then we followed suit for skiing and school. Recently a lot of us have branched out to film with other companies, and now I think we are all coming into our own. If we hadn’t done that, Stept wouldn’t be what it is today. This season, we are coming back together with experiences learned from working with TGR and Poor Boyz, and can focus on making our best Stept work to date. I’m really hyped to focus on Stept this year!

This season is actually the first time the whole Stept crew is under one roof – we recently moved into a house 3 months ago. There are 13 of us in one house. Prior to this, a few of us lived together – those early years were the loosest couple of years of my life. Now, we have a studio and editing suite,  but it is still typical Boulder. We are either skiing all day/night, if there is no snow we’ll party until 6:00 a.m. it’s hectic on your head especially since the college party nights are often midweek and not your typical Friday and Saturday nights… We love it, we have been doing this together for 10 years so when it dumps, everyone is ready to work and all of us can operate the lights, winch, camera, etc.

EC: Your films combine a raw nature and cinematic style that I think is unique. What do you see the future holding for you as a pro-skier and continuing with Stept?

NM: One of our goals is to think we have a broad perspective. Although our content is very niched — urban skiing — the film is enjoyable to watch for all ages and types of skiers.

Personally, I learned so much from Todd Jones (TGR) and Johnny DeCesare (Poor Boyz Productions). Both have been huge inspirations, and they taught me so much in terms of business and marketing.

With Stept we really started taking on documenting street-based skiing. You hear a lot of people saying they’re taking the park into the backcountry, with Stept we’re taking the park out of the terrain park and into the streets. The majority of snowboarding films are urban, and I think we’re filling that gap in skiing.

Additionally, Cam and I have been busy with Stept Studios — commercial film projects with nonendemic media. It’s been fun to dive into the production side of Stept Studios and we’re getting recommendations from others within the industry. That side of Stept has been getting super busy. We keep things separate so it’s great. With Stept Productions, we’re still the badass kids, but we keep it professional for Stept Studios.

EC: Talk about the recent injuries, are you healthy now?

NM: Yes. It feels so good to be walking and skiing, it’s crazy to think back on the injuries the past four years. I’ve had six to seven surgeries and tore my ACL three times. My knee is f’ed again, and the decision was to take out my ACL for this year and ski without it, then re-evaluate in the spring. The past few years I was able to film small segments with TGR and Poor Boyz, but last season was the first year I didn’t film with Stept. This year I’m going to take it back a bit, but I’m excited to ski.

EC: If you could have a dream film trip this season what would that be, and who would you bring?

NM: To be honest, I would love to go to Japan or Alaska, but a dream trip for me would be to go to Boston. The East Coast is so good for urban. Our friends and family are there, and it’s really supportive. Boston is one of my favorite cities to film regarding the architecture — the landscape is very atheistically pleasing for urban. Two winters ago we were there for two months, the shots turned out so well, and to go back with the whole Stept crew would be a dream.

  • News: Black Diamond To Acquire News: Black Diamond To Acquire Snow Safety Product Designer PIEPS

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

      Black Diamond Logo

Black Diamond, Inc. (NASDAQ: BDE) has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire PIEPS Holding GmbH and its operating subsidiary, PIEPS GmbH (together “PIEPS”), a leading Austrian designer and marketer of avalanche beacons and snow safety products, from the SEIDEL Group, a family-owned group of companies focused on electronics manufacturing.

“Black Diamond’s acquisition of PIEPS reflects our ongoing strategy to assemble the best and brightest global companies that lead the charge in creating safer travel and backcountry adventure experiences,” said Peter Metcalf, president and CEO of Black Diamond. “Like Black Diamond Equipment, PIEPS is widely recognized among backcountry enthusiasts for its electronic innovation, premium quality, product reliability and practicality. This reputation has translated into their position as one of the global leaders in avalanche transceivers and has given PIEPS a leading market share in its core markets of Germany and Austria.

Founded in 2006, with roots dating back to 1972, PIEPS is widely recognized as an innovator and technology leader in alpine safety equipment. PIEPS offers a focused range of premium alpine performance products, including avalanche transceivers and probes, shovels, safety equipment, packs, and satellite-based devices for messaging, route tracking, and navigation. PIEPS is the only authorized European Iridium satellite network partner within the alpine sport and outdoor sectors.

PIEPS’ CEO Michael Schober commented: “The joint power of Black Diamond’s global operational resources and PIEPS’ leading alpine search and rescue technology creates a powerful platform for further product development. We believe that Black Diamond’s existing and planned electronic products will be supported with our extensive technical experience developing and manufacturing avalanche beacons and other electronic devices. In Black Diamond, we are confident that we have found our ideal match to cultivate our brand and look forward to continue delivering premium alpine performance products.

      PIEPS Logo

For its fiscal year ended March 31, 2012, PIEPS’ sales were €6.0 million or approximately $8.2 million.

Under the terms of a definitive agreement, Black Diamond will purchase PIEPS for €8.0 million or approximately $10.4 million in cash and will also assume approximately €2.1 million or $2.7 million in debt. Black Diamond has committed up to an additional estimated €2.3 million or approximately $3.0 million of contingent purchase price upon PIEPS’ achievement of certain sales targets between the closing of the transaction and March 31, 2015.

The transaction is expected to close on October 1, 2012 and is expected to be immediately accretive to Black Diamond earnings per share.

“PIEPS will be run as a semi-autonomous, discrete but closely linked Black Diamond brand that we believe will benefit directly from our operational infrastructure that is similarly tailored to highly engineered, life-dependent products,” continued Metcalf. “We also expect to grow PIEPS’ sales in those markets and geographies covered by Black Diamond’s global distribution platform. PIEPS has historically generated higher gross margin than a typical hard goods company and we expect that to have a positive impact on our overall average gross margin. PIEPS intellectual property, specifically its avalanche technology—including their paradigm-changing Global Finder—supports Black Diamond’s continuing focus on developing our electronic technology and applications product portfolio. We believe that all of these factors make PIEPS an ideal acquisition for Black Diamond as we advance our strategy to become the world’s most respected outdoor equipment and lifestyle company.”

Black Diamond Europe Managing Director, Christian Jaeggi observed, “In Europe the combination of Black Diamond with its highly respected, responsive, and centralized dealer services operation with the avalanche safety and transceiver leadership embodied in Pieps creates a truly synergistic opportunity that we believe will benefit not only both companies but retailers and consumers alike.”

All PIEPS products are designed and developed in its state-of-the-art facilities and are the result of close collaboration with top mountain guides and rescue teams, scientists and alpine security specialists, as well as major universities in Austria and Switzerland, such as the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research. PIEPS electronic products will continue to be manufactured by SEIDEL Elektronik, another member of the SEIDEL Group and a contract manufacturer of electronic products for over 15 years.

Renowned for its technological innovation, PIEPS is the recipient of many prestigious industry awards, including Gear of the Show at the summer 2012 Outdoor Retailer and the ISPO Outdoor Award in 2011. It also holds the distinctive ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9001 certification which defines the standard for quality management systems.
