      Beartooth

The Third Annual Beartooth Summer Session is set to occur from Wednesday through Sunday, June 5th-June 9th at Beartooth Basin Ski Area, formerly Red Lodge International Summer Ski Camp, and in the surrounding backcountry.

The little ski area, near the top of Beartooth Pass on the Montana/Wyoming border, features two high-speed poma lifts, steeps,  chutes, cornices, and a terrain  park at the bottom.  The ski area was first opened in the 1960s as a venue for summer  ski race training.  During the late 1990s and early 2000s the ski area saw an influx of newschool skiing. Mickey Price, Tony Gilpin, Glen Plake, and Donovan Power trained and coached alongside Tanner Hall, Wiley Miller, Paul Cotter, and many others.  Prominent film companies such as Teton Gravity Research, Team 13, and Toy Soldier Productions have featured  footage from the Beartooth Basin Ski Area in their films.

The Second Annual Beartooth Summer Session  brought approximately 100 skier visits and 40 competitors from all around North America. Writers from Teton Gravity Research, Sking Magazine, Bomb Snow Magazine, and Explore Big Sky covered the event.

ON3P Ski Company and other sponsors will be working with the ski area to host the session and build a quality terrain park and competition course. The event, terrain park, and ski area will be open to the public as well as to invited riders and photographers. In addition to world-class, lift-accessible summer skiing, the surrounding area has excellent backcountry access, including day-long tours, boot packs, and car shuttle laps.

On Saturday, June 8th, a big-mountain/slopestyle competition will take place at Beartooth Basin. Competitors will take top-to-bottom runs and be judged on style, technique,  amplitude, and consistency.

ON3P will have its fleet of demo skis available free to the public. Tickets to the ski area will be discounted for session attendees to $40 per day. Half day tickets for $35 will also be available.

More details including group lodging options, competition  registration, and a roster of invited riders will be published at www.beartoothsummersession.com . View the rest of the media gallery here. We hope to see you next month in the Beartooths.

  • Skiers Throw Down At Beartooth Skiers Throw Down At Beartooth Summer Session

The first competitor dropped in double fisting beers. He stomped his air over a cliff, then busted a “screamin’ seaman” off a booter near the base. Thirty bros applauded from the cornice above. Below, a siren rang out from the judges’ stand, prompting the next skier to drop before the first competitor even finished.

“We’re running it like this for the next three hours,” judge Trevor Leaf said.

And so it went Saturday at ON3P Skis’ second annual Beartooth Summer Sessions big mountain freestyle skiing event. The competition took place at Red Lodge International Summer Ski And Snowboard Camp — a rugged, remote, tiny nugget of an area with 900-vert and two Poma lifts located off the top of Beartooth Pass in Wyoming, just northeast of Yellowstone National Park.

The event featured a jam-session format where each competitor got three runs. Skiers would drop from a cornice in to a 40-degree face peppered with rocks and cliffs and make their way to a park that featured a couple of booters, a hip jump and a few rails. Skiers were judged on a combined score from the big mountain and freestyle terrain.

      Who won?

“No official results yet,” ON3P’s Kip Kirol said Tuesday. “I started tallying them but they are such chicken scratch I need to confirm a few things.”

In the end, it doesn’t really matter who won — the whole event was an amateur throw down of progressive ski trickery way out in the hills, far away from cell phone reception. Picture a homegrown Red Bull Cold Rush or Red Bull Supernatural type of event happening in June on corn snow. What you have is a rendezvous of 20-year-old Rocky Mountain redneck ski thugs who are more passionate about the sport than a lot of people who make a decent living off it. In short, it was core. Core as fuck.

The solid crew of competitors made a weekend out of it, camping at a Westmintser Spires Church Camp in Red Lodge, Montana, watching pig racing at a bar in Bear Creek at night and skiing during the day.

“Basically the whole idea was to keep everyone as cohesive as possible without forcing anything,” Kip Kirol said. “What I was trying to do was for it to be like a summer camp where you’re not paying for après. Just a really really cheap, bad-ass ski experience.”

Although ON3P is based out of Portland, Oregon, they throw the event on Beartooth Pass because it offers steep, rocky terrain, allowing for the “big mountain” portion of the event. On top of that, it’s a fun road trip for the ON3P crew.

“We got back last night,” Kirol said. “It was great. The ride home was good. We stopped in Hood River and stomped on Sammy Carlson’s trampoline.”

Although relatively obscure, Red Lodge International Summer Ski And Snowboard Camp has been operating on Beartooth Pass since 1968, co-owner and operations manager Austin Hart said. Over the years, its name has changed several times. Many locals still refer to it as Red Lodge Race Camp, he said. Next season, Hart hopes to change the name to something shorter: Beartooth Basin, perhaps.

The area is typically open to the public from Memorial Day Weekend to the Fourth of July, although this year the last day of operations will be July 1. The hill has hosted racers, mogul skiers, and even acted as a training ground for Tanner Hall.

Hart, who is 27 years old, took over his uncle Rob Hart’s share of the ski area in 2009 after Rob Hart died in a skiing accident.

“I kind of got thrown into it,” Hart said. “ But I feel like a pretty lucky to employ my friends and ski around all June.”

Hart wants ON3P to come back next year.

“It’s awesome dude, I love it,” Hart said. “We need these events to bring the crowd who wants to ski there. It’s definitely a big mountain free ride venue. The ON3P guys brought a lot of energy into it. I’m stoked on those guys. They’re cool.”

      Beartooth Summer Session

The Second Annual Beartooth Summer Session is set to begin on Wednesday June 20, 2012.  The session includes 4 days of discounted lift tickets, lodging, meal plans, free 12/13 ON3P demos, a free big mountain-slopestyle competition, an after-party in Red Lodge, and guided backcountry skiing with Beartooth Mountain Guides.

In addition to the lift accessed skiing on Twin Lakes Headwall, the Beartooth Mountains provide skiing options ranging from easy boot packs to multi day tours, all year long.  Red Lodge Summer Ski Camp on Twin Lakes Headwall provides technical steep skiing, cornices, chutes, drops, rails, and jumps all accessed via two high speed poma lifts. Backcountry tours vary from 30 minute boot-packs to multi day expeditions.  Lodging is available at Westminster Spires Camp, located 10 miles from Red Lodge and 13 miles from Beartooth Pass.

Discounted lift tickets, gourmet meals, and economical accommodations are all available for purchase on ON3P Skis’ website.  A Beartooth Summer Session Pass is available and includes 3 lift tickets, 4 nights lodging, free Phar North/Beartooth Summer Session t shirt, raffle tickets for swag give-away, and a meet and greet welcoming dinner.  The Beartooth Session Pass costs $270.  A gourmet meal plan is available and includes steaks, breakfast burritos, spaghetti, fruits, veggies, and other quality food.  The meal plan is available to pre-purchase for $45.  Pre-buying the meal plan will be 35% cheaper than buying each meal individually and there is no guarantee on the amount of food that will be available to purchase on site.  Lodging is also available on a night to night basis for $35 per night.  Anyone staying in the cabins needs to bring their own bedding or sleeping bag.

The session will peak with a big mountain slopestyle competition on Saturday, June 23.  Entry is free and while supplies last, each participant will receive a free Phar North/Beartooth Summer Session t-shirt.  Classes and divisions will be established closer to the day of the event.  The course will feature cornices, chutes, drops, jumps, and rails.  The Bull 'n Bear Saloon in Red Lodge is hosting the after-party on Saturday night.  Red Lodge Taxi will be available for transportation to or from town.
Over $6,500 of gear has been donated from Outdoor Technology, ON3P Ski Company, Saga, Trew, Bloom, Crash Pads, Mystery Ranch, Kink, and Phar North; including skis, jackets, backpacks, and lots of other gear.  Gear will be distributed as contest prizes, raffle ticket items, and special giveaways during the session.

      ON3P Factory

      November 17, 2011

      — John Clary Davies

There’s a piece of base material stuck in Kip Kirol’s mustache. The shavings litter his workspace, where he’s routing out bases, tacking on edges. Behind him, Ramen boils in one of those college dorm essential hot pots.

It’s going to be a late night at Portland’s ON3P mini ski factory. For the four employees and two interns, who work for skis, 14-hour production days are common. The small ski company (pronounced Oh-Ehn-Three-Pea) is making about 1,000 skis this year, and between the entire crew, they can make an average of six skis a day. Practically every step in the process is done by hand, which results in a very labor-intensive production.

"I’m definitely more of a slave driver," ON3P founder and owner Scott Andrus said. "Everyone else has a sense of wanting some normalcy. For better or worse, I’ve gotten used to the crazy hours. This is my life."

In 2008, Rowen Tych was a student at the University of Washington. Once, while on Newschoolers.com, Tych saw a post by Andrus about the semi-custom powder skis he was building in his Tacoma garage for $300 a pop.

"Being a broke college student, that sounded amazing," Tych said. “I said, 'sign me up.'"

A few months later, Tych heard that Andrus needed help pressing the skis, so he drove down to Tacoma. He canceled work for four days and pumped out as many skis as he could, including his own. Upon graduating, Tych couldn’t find any work in his field — biology — and decided to take the year off and apply to graduate school. That’s when Andrus offered him a job.

      ON3P Factory

Andrus walks into the factory looking beat. With bloodshot eyes and unkempt hair, he comes across a bit curt. Five years after building his own ski press in his garage, his company has nearly doubled its production each year. On Dec. 1, the company will move into a new factory space, three times the size of its current facility. Additionally, evo.com will be carrying ON3P skis this season as the first retailer to do business with the upstart. Andrus says that if they meet their goals this year, ON3P will nearly be profitable. That’s no small feat for a small company in its fourth year, but clearly, it has also taken a toll on Andrus.

"I haven’t had a life for two and a half years," said Andrus. "We literally lived here for six months, we would go home every week and half to shower and do laundry."

Rowen and Andrus lamented the challenges of operating a small ski company. Manufacturers tend to put smaller orders at the end of the line. For a company that operates on pre-sales, there isn’t much margin for error, says Andrus. So when edges show up seven months late, or the sidewalls come a centimeter too short, it adds to the stress of an already tight timeline.

Of course, the benefits to working for themselves are the freedom and control to use their tools however they please.

"We get to do whatever we want," Andrus said. "We don’t have a huge budget so you can’t go totally crazy, but we are still building whatever we want to build."

This season, that includes the limited edition Pillowfight, 135-mm underfoot boards with a rockered tip and rockered and tapered tail. The top sheets, different for each of the 15 skis built at each size, feature a different image of women pillow fighting in lingerie. Tych said he was sitting around drinking beers out of the office kegerator one night when he came up with the idea.

"I was like, 'what do you want on a super deep, endless powder day?'" Tych said.

      ON3P Pillowfight Ad

The guys at ON3P recruited their most attractive friends for a photo shoot — all the girls asked for in return was a little booze — while an ON3P artist shot nearly 2,000 images.

"It was the best night ever," Andrus said. "The hardest thing to do was get them to hit each other. One was six weeks pregnant."

By building skis entirely themselves, Tych said they are able to come up with a prototype, drop all the files, cut their bamboo cores, build the ski and throw it in the press the next day.

"You can literally be going from idea, to it’s on your feet in a week," Tych said.

Tych said by being a part of every step in the process increases the attention to detail, the quality of the ski, and his pride in each pair.

"When you’re running a small batch through, you pay individual attention and walk each and every ski through the entire process yourself," Tych said. “And not only is it kind of cool to end up with a finished pair of skis after you take the wrapper off, but it’s like, 'Nice, from start to finish, we did this.'"
