Open Season: Big Game Hunting Open Season: Big Game Hunting On Mt. Shasta
- From: sethlightcap

Description:
Words and photos by Seth Lightcap
Unless you have the freedom to beeline straight to Northern California in the next 48 hours, do not call this number: 530-926-5555
That’s the number for the Mt. Shasta Climber’s Hotline sponsored by The Fifth Season mountain shop in Mt. Shasta City. It’s a recorded message that is updated daily with the current climbing and skiing conditions on the 14,179-foot tall Mt. Shasta, the second highest volcano in the Cascades.
Calling the Shasta hotline is not to be taken lightly. Spontaneous calls have been known to send ski fiends into a frenzy. No doubt jobs have been lost and relationships trashed because of Shasta hotline calls. But if there is even the slightest chance you can drop everything and run to Mt. Shasta this very minute...dial the number now. Yes, right now. Then call your boss and start coughing...
Despite a lackluster winter in Tahoe and the central Sierra, Mt. Shasta caught the brunt of northern trending storms which stacked the snowpack to near average depth. The gargantuan flanks of this mystical peak have now ripened into golden fields of corn snow that beg for 200 foot radius GS turns. If you’ve ever laid eyes on the mighty Mt. Shasta, or better yet, been able to shred it, then you know these runs are all par five. Six thousand-foot descents drop off the summit plateau on every aspect. The only caveat is that you’ve got to earn every turn, so get stoked to spend some hours putting one foot in front of the other if you want to slay this giant.
As usual, May is the month to find primo conditions on the southwest facing routes that are the easiest to access. The Bunny Flat trailhead is the starting point for most adventures at the moment with the trailheads on the north and east sides still a few weeks from melting out. Vinnie Poch, a Shasta ski freak who works at The Fifth Season, suggests you get on these south facing routes now, otherwise look around the corner come June.
“The skiing has been phenomenal, but if it doesn’t cool down the south side is gonna go quick,” said Poch. “But then we’ll just have to move to the north and east sides of the mountain.”
Brennan Lagasse rips the northeast face of a Mt. Shasta sub-peak known as Shastina. The Whitney glacier pours down between the two peaks.
On your first Shasta ski trip climbing the Avalanche Gulch route from the Bunny Flat trailhead and skiing the Red Banks bowl or the West Face is a sure bet. Once you get accustomed to the climbing logistics and the lay of the land the potential for linking multiple descents and stacking up big vertical is endless. If you want to bag the summit and ski down in a single day be ready to leave the trailhead at 3 or 4 am. You’ll need about seven hours to the climb the 7,000 feet to the summit. The other option is to camp midway up which substantially shortens the summit push.
Allison Lightcap and Brennan Lagasse tour alongside the Whitney glacier. The north, east and south sides of the mountain are home to active glaciers.
For the next month or more you’ll be able to skin right from the car up to about 10 or 11,000 feet. Beyond that, the pitch steepens dramatically and most routes become a bootpack. Crampons are crucial, as you’ll be trudging up frozen slopes pre-dawn. Climbing with a whippet self-arrest pole or ice axe is also a must. The routes vary in exposure but there is always the potential for an awkward slip to turn into a very long tumble.
Allison Lightcap crunches across the rime-y northeast ridge of Shastina.
Weather and wind will make or break your day on Shasta. If the winds are cranking stay low as anything above 10,000 feet won’t stand a chance of softening up.
North facing slopes between 11,000 and 14,00- feet still hold some transitional winter snow. Allison Lightcap found a panel of the porn-y stuff slashing off Shastina.
If you don’t have the crampons and ice axe necessary for the mission you can rent them from The Fifth Season or the Shasta Base Camp in Mt. Shasta City. Without that gear excuse, the only thing standing between you and a 7,000-foot backcountry ski descent is a fair bit of travel time (it’s a long way to Shasta from anywhere) and of course, the gusto to climb this bad mother. All things considered, the ascent is not a super human feat, though. If you’ve ever pulled off a 10-hour day in the mountains and you’ve had some experience climbing above 12,000 feet, then the climb shouldn’t be a problem for you.
You reap what you sow on Mt. Shasta. Allison Lightcap harvested first tracks down a 3,000 foot panel of perfect corn as a reward for dropping off the summit into the Wintun glacier before the Brewer Creek trailhead on the east side of the mountain was open. We climbed back up the Wintun to the summit and dropped down the West Face to the car at Bunny Flat.
Just like a hunting season, to get in on the Shasta season you’ll need to fill out a wilderness permit and purchase a summit pass if you plan to climb above 10,000 feet. Permits cost $20 and are available at all the trailheads. If you have the motivation to climb but are shaky on the technical skills you can also hire a ski guide from Shasta Mountain Guides. They offer both group and custom backcountry ski trips until the snow is gone.
Do you catch my drift? There’s really nothing to it but to do it. So take a deep breath, think about how rad it would be to cap off your winter with an epic descent off one of the finest ski peaks in the world and then pick up the phone. Now dial these digits and make it happen - 530-926-5555. - Blog post

Windells Session 2 Snowboardin Windells Session 2 Snowboarding Recap

It’s almost the end of June and that means that Session 2 has just finished up at Windells Snowboard Camp. The first month of summer has been flying by, as every day has been packed full with fun activities on and off the hill. The Nike 6.0 Team hosted Session 2, and with all of the park laps, skating, and Zombie Dodgeball the riders were taking part in, it was hard to tell who was having the most fun: Mason Aguirre, Sage Kotsenburg, Greg Bretz, Matt Ladley, and Ellery Hollingsworth, or all of the campers they were hanging out with!

A Session 2 view of the park, filled with jumps, rails, and boxes. Tucked in the right corner is the snake run, a favorite feature of everyone this summer.
For a small taste of summer snowboard camp fun, here are the top six moments from Session 2:
- The Nike crew hosted the first ever Windells Got Talent activity, where campers displayed a host of interesting skills. The youth of today is definitely multi-talented. the Nike 6.0 Team channeled Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson, judging acts that ranged from a devil stick performance, to pseudo-choreographed 80’s dancing, celebrity impressions, and finally, a brother and sister who did a dance and then poured soda on each other’s faces.
- The Capita Team came to camp, where they hung out with campers, participated in the chocolate milk race, signed autographs, and told everyone about their new team movie, Defenders of Awesome.
- Sage Kotsenburg held Sage-a-palooza with the campers, which included a multitude of birthday presents, cans of frosting, and prizes from Nike 6.0. Campers presented gifts to Sage, one of the best being a sock puppet that proclaimed he was the Sage’s #1 fan.
- Niko Cioffi and the Gremlinz were running around camp, too, and created a brand new, awesome camp activity: Capture the Schwag. Later in the week, Dakota Whitaker hit the on-campus air bag on a snowskate. Twice. This was the first time in recorded history this has ever happened.
- Nike 6.0 took over the Windells park. Mason, Greg, and Matt were lapping the tow ropes, Ellery was shredding with campers, and Sage Kotsenburg somehow lost his shirt, but was able to continue boarding. Nike stoked out the campers by bringing Snapsportz on hill and in the skatepark to get tons of photos of everyone having a blast and learning new tricks.
- The Voleurz Team trekked to camp from Canada, too! Joe Schuster, Jake Black, Simon D’Artois, and Patrick King showed their 2011 Intersection winning video and along with a group of excited campers, debunked the “don’t eat Pop Rocks and drink soda” myth.
Session 2 over and out—there’s still time to register for Session 7 in August, so head over to www.windells.com for more info, and come ride with us!

Mason Aguirre. We think he is doing a cab five mute. Regardless, looks like fun!

The Capita Team narrowly avoided getting carpal tunnel from all of the autographs they signed for campers while promoting their new team movie, Defenders of Awesome. (l to r) Scotty Stevens, Cale Zima, and Brandon Cocard. P: Erik Hoffman

Niko Cioffi back one off the pole jam.

That’s a really proper backlip. Luke Haddock.

Greg Bretz has great grabs.

Niko Cioffi created and patented Gremlinz Capture the Schwag while at camp. As the Gremlinz would say, “everyone synced up and sanctioned tons of schwag.” P: Erik Hoffman

The inflating of the bag jump each year is a definite sign that summer is here at Mount Hood.

Del Mar means “from the sea” in Spanish. Brendan Gerard is from Lake Tahoe. The two come together for a second in the halfpipe, in what could be called a Del Tahoe indy.

At Windells, the zombies always win during Zombie Dodgeball. No matter how many times campers hear this, some still choose to play on the human side. Sage Kotsenburg and camper Sebastian work the odds and join the zombie ranks for a game. P: Erik Hoffman

Windells Snowboard Camp Sessio Windells Snowboard Camp Session 1 recap
- From: windellscamp
-
Description:

Chris Hagerty came all the way to Hood, via Colorado, to start of his summer shred with this back five stale.
Summer has officially begun at Mount Hood. The jumps are salted, the towropes are turning, and campers are strapping in and learning new tricks. Session 1 just wrapped at Windells and it was a seriously sick start to the season. The mountain is completely white, with over 100 inches of snow more than usual, and the Windells Diggers have crafted one of their best parks ever: two separate jib areas and all of the jumps, hips, and quarters that your summer-shredding heart could desire.

There are new additions to the Concrete Jungle are all over campus, thanks to Jamie Weller, Billy Coulon, Peter Gunn, Nick Early, and crew.
The first Windells session was all about good weather, good riding, and good friends with session hosts, Johnny Lazz, Forest Bailey, Nial Romanek, and Will Bateman. The crew lapped all week under sunny skies, hitting more metal than a member of the United Steelworkers Union on an overtime shift. What you would expect to be true about a week at snowboard camp, definitely is: it’s the most fun you can have during the summer months. Beyond the awesomeness of shredding everyday, skating every night, and getting to play tons of on-campus games, here are the top five highlights from Session 1:
- The new street section of the Concrete Jungle was unveiled: curbs, ledges, and a stairset, all thanks to Jamie Weller, Billy Coulon, and crew.
- Forest held a pickle-eating contest for the second year in a row, this time with giant gherkins on strings and blindfolded campers. Winning campers walked away with prizes from Gnu, but the spectators might have had the most fun watching everyone
- What’s better than drinking a smoothie of dinner leftovers made by Johnny Lazz? Watching Johnny drink it, too. Lazz, Forest, Will, and Nial plugged their noses and drank liquefied lasagna with the campers.
- Lazz, Forest, Will, and Nial did a top to bottom run, lapping all of Timberline, through the lengthy Windells park, Public Park, and down to the base of the Magic Mile Lift.
- The Neff RV came to camp and gave out free ice cream to all of the campers. Summer camp is the best.

Justin Norman shows his Oregon colors with tail bonk on the wallride.

If Forest stalls above the clouds on Timberline and no one is around to see it, do we remember if he back oned on or off?

There’s more snow on Mount Hood than there has been in years—they had to dig out the Palmer lift in order to have it run.

Nial Romanek back 180 off the pole jam.

A little yoga is a good way to start the afternoon. Sammy Spiteri and crew striking the warrior pose.

Assistant Head Digger Everest Arnold may not be showing the proper tow rope safety, but he sure is having a good time.

This shot of Derrek Lever’s frontlip is fire. If Derrek could grow a mustache, it’d fiery too. Because he’s a redhead.

Description:
When both Jackson Hole and Grand Targhee closed for the season, one must inevitably migrate South in search of lift service and this past weekend presented the perfect opportunity to do so. Snowbird picked up two feet of snow last Tuesday en route to breaking their all time season snowfall record of 688". That snow was followed by another 18" Friday night and by Saturday morning I found myself at the base of Little Cottonwood Canyon waiting for avalanche clearance after a 5 hour drive from Jackson that began at 3 AM. And well, from there it was literally all time. Just watch the video and you'll see.

Description:
The past four days have been perhaps the best four of my life. It’s been an up and down past month or so here at Jackson Hole and things finally started to turn around last week. On Saturday, co-worker Brian Wulf and I took three flawlessly smooth laps through Four Pines. On Sunday it dumped 24″ in a 12 hour period and I met up with Don Watkins and Julie Weinberger for some deep pillow lines through Four Pines and Saratoga Bowl. Yesterday, Headwall, Casper Bowl and The Crags opened, changing my life forever and there’s no end in sight. Below are videos from yesterday and from Monday. Enjoy!

While I can't say no to a double digit powder, some of my favorite days of the season so far have been the midweek storms that come out of nowhere. Jackson Hole reported only 3" this morning, but there were pockets of 6"+. After first tracks down Bernie's Bowl and Alta 1 Chute, I ripped a super smooth Laramie Bowl and Grand before heading to work at 11. Oh, and it was bluebird all day.

While we picked up an unexpected midweek 7" at Jackson Hole, the snow was followed by quite a bit of warming, roughing up much of the resort's off-piste in-bounds skiing. As such, I took to the groomers the past couple days to try out a few new GoPro mounts and here are my findings.

Windell's Session 4 Snowboard Windell's Session 4 Snowboard Recap and Video
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Another session down at Windells Snowboard Camp and just like the snow covering the lava rocks on Mount Hood, the summer is melting away more quickly than everyone would like it to. Well, they say time flies when you’re having fun, right? That’s definitely the case at Windells, where Session Four was a blur of corrugated tubes, pole jams, barrel bonks, with stoked-out campers making new friends, learning sweet tricks and grabbing free schwag.
This past session Windells resident schralper Pat Milbery brought together riders from Skull Candy, Arbor and Think Thank to form a very creative, skate-influenced and fun-loving group of shreds—perfect candidates to build a Dream Feature. Skull Candy’s Bennie Henrich and Zack Hale joined Arbor’s Moss Halladay and Joe Bosler. Austin Hironaka, Scott Stevens and Ben Bogart rallied for Think Thank and joined in on the Dream Feature shredding as well. The group built a step up dance floor to spine combo that was flanked by a corrugated tube, pole jam and matching hips.
The second stop of Bonfire’s Pipe 2 Pipe also went down during Session Two, with energy-filled ams storming the Windells park for the rail jam. The most energetic am of all, Windells’ own Johnny Lazz took the snow title, backing up his win from last year with some very tech tricks.
Session Five is up next with the Skeleton Crew as the resident pros. Check www.windells.com/blog for daily updates on what’s going down, up on Mount Hood.
