Hit List: Julian Carr Hit List: Julian Carr
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
Welcome to Hit List, a new interview series that gives athletes, industry peeps and folks you secretly idolize the chance to reveal all their dirty little secrets to the untamed terrain of the world wide web. The premise is simple, ask a few probing—and perhaps inappropriate–questions, and release the reigns for the interviewee to go buck wild with whatever they wish to divulge.
To get this party started, we hit up Julian Carr, aka the Flying Yeti, because he's the king of crazy cliff drops, the founder of Discrete Headwear and an all around deep dude. We asked him a motley mix of questions, from his stance on jorts to head banging, which produced more intuitive morsels than we had bargained for. Buckle up.
Take it away Jules!
Which TGR athlete would you most like to make-out with and why?
I've lived with Rachael Burks and Dash Longe and didn't make out with either of them. What a rip off.
What gets your adrenaline going more, grocery shopping or getting the mail?
Hmmm that's tough. I think mail. Grocery store you kinda know what you're getting into, but with the mail, you never know what goodies are showing up. Exhilarating.
What's the best head-banging song of all time?
Metallica #Fourhorsemen or LaidbackLuke & Steve Aoki #Turbulence
Speaking of head-banging, how many times a day do you brush your luscious locks?
Once or twice daily. Morning before I tie it back, and if I'm feeling a bit of a breeze it might get a second brushing.
You're dating Sierra Quitiquit. Who has longer hair?
Same length exactly—I shit you not. Sometimes I look at her mane and I'm like, damn you got some long ass hair… Then quickly realize that I, too, have some long ass hair. Quite trippy.
We heard you're training for the Olympricks, what does your training regimen look like?
Secret. But, lots of smoothies and juicing. And almond butter.
What are the top seven pieces of gear you have to have for summer?
Skateboard.
Smith Shades.
Discrete limited #5Panel or #Floral snapback.
Goal Zero transportable solar panel.
What are your thoughts on Jorts?
I'm way into them. Anyone that isn't, clearly is misappropriated chemically.
Would you rather throw spread eagles or stickmans for the rest of your life?
Stickmans! Right Todd Ligare?!.. Haha. Ligare has the sickest "hanging man" in the game FYI.
You're poolside, what's better-- Bud Light Lime, Tropical Flavored Twisted Tea, or a Coronita?
A "Red Light" which is Bud Light, Red Bull, and Vodka.
What are the best and worst trends in skiing?
Best is people loving to connect in their own way with the mountain that is authentic to them. Like hooting from the chairlift at someone shredding, that's good style. Or if you're all by yourself, getting it and hooting yourself on—that's sick style! The worst trend is people connecting to the mountain in a way that is not authentic to them.
Name three places in the world you'd never want to visit?
I can't say there are any places I never want to go. But three I want to go to the least? Hmmm, Kansas. DC. Tijuana.
We heard you're deep. Blow our minds with something deep.
I believe in the infinite possibilities of higher comprehensions.
What was your favorite part of last season?
I was stoked I got to shred some quality Utah powder, travel in Iceland, and work with a film company I admire, Sherpas Cinemas.
So you’ve been getting after it, but aren't you a little young to be having a comeback season?
Haha. Keep the knees chopping, head on a swivel and the chest up! Keep up the good fight! Always. When you hit 80 or so is when you are classified as old. 'Til then stay hungry!
Best make-out song?
Aaron Neville, "How could I help but love you." Or Duck Sauce, "Barbara Streisand."
Craziest thing you've witnessed at a snow industry party?
Someone not drinking. Haha. And that's actually me! Haven't in 5 months, loving the new energy.
Worst job you could ever imagine having?
I think you can find beauty in any engagement.
Who are your sponsors these days?
Icelantic, Spyder, GoPro, Discrete, Backcountry.com, Suunto, Level, Smith, Goal Zero.

Rahlves' Banzai Tour Finishes Rahlves' Banzai Tour Finishes Strong
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
Truckee, Calif. (March 12, 2013) –Throughout the past two months, skiers, snowboarders and spectators alike have descended upon the Tahoe area to compete in and watch the rowdiest race in the Sierra. Rahlves’ Banzai Tour brought in tough competition from across the country to four renown Lake Tahoe resorts for the ultimate test of ski and riding skills. The tour also entertained guests with quintessential pre and après ski parties, exciting results, and photo finishes.
Starting at Kirkwood Mountain Resort, athletes were challenged by “The Wall,” which proved to be one of the most challenging races to date, as competitors had to drop into an intimidating 20 ft. vertical wall right out of the gate. For the second tour stop hosted at Alpine Meadows, athletes were tested with fast and rough terrain, while spectators were entertained with the closest and most dramatic photo finish in Banzai history. With warm spring-like weather on the first day of the Squaw Valley tour stop, and formidable conditions on Sunday, Squaw tested the resilience of Rahlves’ Banzai Tour, as well as the dedication of tour participants. However, with fresh snow in the forecast, Rahlves’ Banzai Tour rallied for the final tour stop at Sugar Bowl Resort, home of the original Silver Belt Banzai.
The Sugar Bowl Final and Super Final concluded the tour in true Banzai style, complete with strong competition paired with music, barbecue, libations and the beloved Banzai atmosphere of camaraderie and healthy competition. Banzai veterans Johnny Bochenek, Kyle Coxon and John Lange took the top spots for men’s skiing during the Silver Belt, which also qualified Lange as the final athlete to compete in the Super Final. Men’s snowboarded Chelone Miller raced to first in the Silver Belt, while women’s snowboarder Kiana Putman and women’s skier Shannon Rahlves both secured the top spot in their respective categories. The men’s Super Final provided drama and a $5,000 paycheck to Salt Lake City skier Kyle Coxon. “The Sugar Bowl final and Super Final were awesome,” said Daron Rahlves. “It was a beautiful day, fans lined the course and the athletes delivered a great show. I wanted to be skiing in the Super Final, but instead was an excited fan like the rest watching and stoked for Kyle Coxon taking home the 5 grand. I will be back in the Super Final next year so those boys better start training now ha, ha. I’m so grateful to my wife and kids for the endless support, all the sponsors, the fans and athletes for making this year’s tour the best yet. ”

For those who are curious about the tour’s name, Banzai is a Japanese term expressed as an exuberant cheer meaning, “Long Life!” or “Hurray!” An apt name for a high-spirited downhill ski and snowboard competition, the Silver Belt Race first took place in the 1940s at Sugar Bowl Ski Resort and was re-introduced with the head-to-head action by Daron Rahlves and Sugar Bowl in 2009. The race continued with one event for another year, and then Rahlves decided to take the show on the road, officially launching Rahlves’ Banzai Tour and expanding to stops at four of Lake Tahoe's premier resorts.
The Rahlves Banzai tour is presented by Bank of The West. The Rahlves Banzai Tour is also supported by sponsors such as Red Bull, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Contour, CEP “intelligent sportswear”, North Lake Tahoe Chamber/VCB/Resort Association, Spyder, Atomic, Start Haus Ski Shop, Wend Wax, COAL, SVE/BOSE, The Bar Effect, World Cup Supply, Jagermeister, Snow Fest, Sports Insurance, Technical Equipment Cleaners, Resort at Squaw Creek, ZINKA, 101.5 Truckee Tahoe Radio, Tahoe TV, POWDER Mag, High Fives Foundation and CRUX Events, thereby creating an alluring $80,000 prize purse. News: Backcountry.com Signs TG News: Backcountry.com Signs TGR Athlete Ian McIntosh To Pro Team
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:

Canadian pro freeskier Ian McIntosh is a hard-charging specimen of brute strength, raw talent, and pure style. Today, Backcountry.com, online specialty retailer of premium outdoor gear, welcomes McIntosh to their 34-member Pro Team. No slouch to slashing turns on steep powder faces, electrifying crowds at comps, or bringing his A-game for the camera, McIntosh joins an elite athlete roster that includes some of the most talented professionals in skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering, rock climbing, and mountain biking.
“We are super excited about having Ian join our program,” said Jonny Atencio, Sports Marketing Manager at Backcountry.com. “I've known Ian since he was competing on the Freeride Tour – the guy is a beast. His ability to seek out and ski unique lines is uncanny. We look forward to Ian's contributions to our community, as he will be providing product reviews, answering questions, and uploading photos and video to the Backcountry.com site.”
Growing up in the Kootenays in interior British Columbia, Canada, McIntosh has had skis strapped to his feet since he was two-years-old. As part of a family that was crazy about skiing – his grandfather is still an instructor at age 85 – McIntosh honed his love for speed and technique as a ski racer during his early years. But, as he got older, the big mountains were calling McIntosh’s name – which prompted a move to Whistler in 2004.
“Having an avid skiing family, it was natural for me to gain a huge love for the mountains,” said McIntosh. “I was ski touring with my family from age 10. But, my love for powder quickly overtook my love for racing and I found myself completely addicted to skiing and over the years became a successful ski bum. Many things helped me hone my skills over the years from racing to the Freeski Tour, but I attribute everything to those early years as a kid where my passion for the mountains was born.”
After a few years on the freeride comp circuit, where he took second-place overall on the Freeski World Tour in 2004 and won the North American crown the same year, McIntosh was invited to shoot with leading ski-film company Teton Gravity Research (TGR) – a dream of his. This opportunity opened the door to McIntosh’s ski career as he has become a leading athlete in not only TGR’s annual ski films, but many others including Warren Miller and Red Bull productions. In 2007, McIntosh won the Powder Magazine Awards “Breakthrough Performance” honor.
“My skiing today is evolving as I become more and more focused on going places where not many have ever been and skiing mountains and lines that have never been ridden,” said McIntosh. “Bigger challenges and bigger rewards are waiting. Joining Backcountry.com is super exciting for me because I think that I embody the backcountry spirit as strong as most.”
Consisting of some of the most experienced and respected athletes in the world, Backcountry.com’s Pro Team members are ambassadors – and affiliates – for the site. Through adding product reviews, updating their personal profile pages, and sharing news across their social media channels, Backcountry.com athletes are an extension of the brand helping connect and engage customers and the Backcountry.com community.

Manhunt For Armed Fugitive Doe Manhunt For Armed Fugitive Does Little To Derail SoCal Shredders On A Powder Day
- From: vandagyuris
-
Description:
Nothing could keep Big Bear shredders indoors when a mid-February blizzard dumped two feet of pow on the Southern California dome – even a deadly manhunt for murder suspect and former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner.
Big Bear residents were put on high alert as schools closed, resorts shut down, and local shops locked up once the hunt for Dorner moved from Irvine to the mountain town above Los Angeles. Despite the warnings that the fugitive had stowed away in a cabin in the woods, Bear Mountain only shut down for one session. A thousand feet below, Snow Summit didn’t even blink an eye and carried on business as usual. With a record single snowfall of the season, mother earth’s gift of 24 inches overruled any fear of a convicted felon on the loose.
Dorner was suspected to have launched a killing spree that allegedly began on February 3rd in Irvine. Four days later, Dorner’s burned out truck was discovered in Big Bear Lake, commencing a six-day manhunt. Found barricaded inside a cabin on February 12, authorities tried to smoke him out with pyrotechnics. The cabin caught fire and Dorner’s charred remains were identified a few days later.
Throughout the ordeal, Bear Mountain offered a constant stream of updates on the status of the mountain on their homepage.
Despite the media blow out over a mountain lockdown, skiers and boarders continued to chase down fresh powder in the wake of magically clear conditions.
Undeterred shredders scrambled for first chair at Big Bear as authorities searched for murder suspect Chris Dorner. (Photo: Big Bear Mountain Resorts)
Closing only for a single afternoon session on precautionary terms, Bear continued to operate with all runs open and their legendary fully loaded park – including the big girl and boy playground, Red Bull Plaza. The Plaza provides an urban oasis for expert riders with 32 foot stairs, K-rails, a billboard wall ride, and a marble ledge, just to highlight a few.
The nonchalant tone on the mountain amidst national anxiety aligned with the essence of skiing and boarding. Sports so reliant upon Mother Nature to deliver opportunity, especially in a region like Southern California, cannot afford to waste a single snowflake. While tense vibes certainly permeated the community of Big Bear, on the mountain it was the crisp wind, the perfect sun and the smell of a fresh layer that reigned supreme.Big Bear Mountain Resort and Snow Summit Lift Tickets are available for Sale ONLINE through Liftopia.com - Blog post

The Red Bull Playstreets is a one of a kind freeski event: a slopestyle contest that attracts thousands of spectators and twists and turns through the narrow streets of Bad Gastein, Austria. Runs have to be perfect to get enough speed for the challenging features and Gus Kenworthy managed to make it all the way through to the finals, unfortunately just not getting enough speed to clear the jump features. That didn't stop him throwing down a cork 900 of the knuckle of the jump and claiming second place! Congrats Gus!

X Games terrain park builders Snow Park Technologies to star in reality TV show on National Geographic Channel.
Story and Photos By Seth Lightcap
Reality TV has shown us dirty jobs, dangerous jobs and of course, ‘only in Nevada’ jobs (see Cathouse). But for once, you’re late night channel surfing is about to drop you into the boots of a talented crew doing a really freakin’ cool job.
Ever wonder what it takes to build an X Games halfpipe or design a super-human sized slopestyle feature? You’re about to find out as the exploits of Snow Park Technologies, the rockstar terrain park builders tasked with creating the X Games courses and signature resort terrain parks at Sun Valley, Northstar and Vail, will be featured in a reality TV show on the National Geographic Channel. The eight-episode series, called ‘Mountain Movers’, will air in late-spring 2013.
Snow Park Technologies (SPT) was founded on the sunny So-Cal slopes of Snow Summit Resort in 1997 by then Snow Summit terrain park director Chris ‘Gunny’ Gunnarson. Gunnarson’s offshoot terrain park consulting business has since grown to become the world’s foremost designer and builder of resort terrain parks, competition courses and signature park features. SPT is known for it’s exacting logistical expertise and innovative production abilities having built every Winter X Games course there’s ever been, as well as next-level park features like the cubed halfpipe that SPT created for Red Bull and Simon Dumont at Squaw Valley in 2011.
The talents of SPT’s crew of cat drivers and jib builders attracted the attention of NatGeo Channel who are currently filming SPT’s operations as they criss-cross the globe building halfpipes and terrain parks. The show will offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse at SPT’s unique construction efforts, said Gunnarson.
“‘Mountain Movers’ will tell the story about the design and construction efforts that go into the work we do at SPT, and the different conditions and environments we deal with along the way,” said Gunnarson. “The idea is that each episode will follow one project from start to finish — from initial design and planning through the execution of the project on site.”
Armed with a no-nonsense, get-it-done-right attitude, Gunnarson will take a lead role in the TV series as the show chronicles the SPT president’s moves leading the company.

Beyond strictly on-snow, on-location scenes, Mountain Movers will showcase SPT’s new Jib Factory, a cavernous office/production facility in Verdi, Nevada where they design terrain park layouts and build the rails and wallrides. SPT’s drive to bang out on-time construction, delivery and installation of such features will be a focal point of the show. This massive 40x30 foot wallride (the biggest SPT has ever built) was constructed early-January in the Jib Factory for the 2013 Winter-X Snowboard Street course.

Snow Park Technologies’ lead fabricator Tyrone Coyne is arguably the king of terrain park rail and jib building. Coyne built the world’s first “fun box” (a slide-able park feature with lexan plastic on top of it) when he was working at Snow Summit Resort in the late ’90s and has been designing and crafting signature terrain park features for SPT ever since. With a masterful eye for jib design and a steady hand with a welding torch, Coyne is the shop supervisor of SPT’s Jib Factory. Get ready for some heavy metal moments as the NatGeo cameras capture Coyne in action building monster features.
Laying down corduroy in a snowcat may not sound that riveting, but sculpting jumps and halfpipes should present some interesting angles on some serious cat-time. SPT Project Manager, Corley Howard (shown here), and the legendary halfpipe cutter and SPT Business Director Frank Wells will be two of the cat drivers featured.
“The weapon of choice is the Prinoth Bison X,” said Howard, talking about the best snowcat for building terrain parks. The Italian-made Bison X is a terrain park-specific snowcat equipped with special features that allows them to push snow more efficiently than a standard grooming cat that’s designed to go faster up and down ski runs. SPT has its own custom-wrapped Bison X that will star in the TV show and snowcat snafus will be a likely source of tension in the story line.

SPT uses a software program called Google Sketch-Up to create 3D renderings of what a terrain park feature will look like on the mountain before it’s built. These drawings allow SPT to precisely present its suggested park layouts to resort and event management. The dimensions of the drawings can be used to determine the amount of steel needed to build a rail or the water volume needed to make enough snow to build a jump or halfpipe. These drawings depict a new jump line at SPT partner resort Alpine Meadows.

Nobody builds bigger, badder jibs than SPT. Inside the Jib Factory, SPT fabricators Sean Picard and Erik Jakobsen prepare a couple gargantuan rails for primetime. Two of these rail segments came together to form the ‘Bat-wing’ rail featured in the 2013 Winter X slopestyle course.

- From: TetonGravityResearch

Description:

Les Arcs, France - Sam Favret, of Chamonix, won the fifth installment of Red Bull Linecatcher. American Parker White and Nicolas Vuignier, of Switzerland, took home second and third, respectively.
The 2013 edition of the Red Bull Linecatcher featured a high level of competition on the White Circus face, in the Savoyard resort of Les Arcs, France. As expected, the day had clear skies, little wind and very cold temperatures, allowing the snowpack to retain its lightness. On this beautiful face covered with powder, 20 skiers decided to do what they do best: go huge in the backcountry.

A native of Chamonix, Sam Favret, impressed the judges with breathtaking descents. In his last run, Favret skillfully combined the techniques of freestyle, freeride commitment, and creative line choice, convincing the jury he was the No. 1 skier of the day.
After a switch cork 540 on the right side and a left cork 720 off two kickers on the top of the face, Favret skied with aggression and fluidity in the second part of his line, embellishing his descent from a 360 on a natural air before drawing in large turns toward the finish line.
“Happiness! What a day! There were really great [jumps] on this contest,” Favret said. “I have overcome the pressure and ski relaxed and it allowed me free rein and [to ski] my best. This is awesome. ... This result bodes well for the rest of the season.”

Parker White, a 21-year-old American ski prodigy and the youngest skier in the race, climbed to the second step of the podium. He won the heart of the jury by making two very technical airs perfectly on his first run, throwing a 720 and a butter cork 720.
“Today was a magical day,” said White, of Vermont. “I did not expect at all to finish second and I'm really, really happy.”
Nicolas Vuignier, of Switzerland, who is the only one of the three winners to have already participated in the Red Bull Linecacher, completed the podium. It was during the 2011 edition that Nicolas had crossed the qualifiers but could not confirm at the final stages. This year, is his last run, he seized his chance. He chose a strange line, beginning his descent with a 360 on natural terrain before two kickers: a cork 7 and 360, all at full speed and flawless.
“Everyone has skied so well that it must have been really difficult for the judges. I am very pleasantly surprised and super happy,” Vuignier said while leaving the podium.
Finally, the special prize of “Best Natural Trick” (best is on natural terrain) was awarded to Léo Taillefer of Val d'Isère for his superb skiing and a 360 over a bump in the natural entrance of his run.
This fifth edition of the Red Bull Linecatcher has been a great success and resulted in a very diverse showcase of freeskiing.

News: Rahlves’ Banzai Tour Ann News: Rahlves’ Banzai Tour Announces Tour Dates
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
Truckee, Calif. –Rahlves’ Banzai Tour is back, showcasing racing in its purest form of four at a time going head-to-head over natural terrain in ski and boarder-cross style action. The 2013 dates for this annual favorite have been announced, so mark your calendars and get ready to compete in the ultimate test on the mountain. With tour stops, pre and après parties spanning four weekends from Feb. 2nd through Mar. 10th at Kirkwood Mountain Resort, Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley and Sugar Bowl Resort, the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour is sure to be a showstopper.
“There is no other race like this in the world,” said Rahlves. “Last year's low tide conditions forced new routes down each venue and produced exciting competition and a great show for spectators. I was impressed with the competitors attitude and level of commitment. What's so unique about this race is every day ripper’s line up against pro level athletes and have a shot at the title of Rahlves' Banzai Champ. It's a competition among competitors, but ultimately it's against the mountain.”
When the gate drops, it's on as four competitors battle it out for the holeshot and an early lead. Tactics, skill, strength and calculated risk are put to the test attacking terrain and skied out snow conditions found at any resort off the groomed runs. Watching the battle is simply awe-inspiring and commands respect.
The final stop on the tour at Sugar Bowl Resort, where the race originated, will feature the “Super Final” in which former World Champion, 12-time World Cup winner, X-Games Gold Medalist and four-time Olympic skier, and Sugar Bowl Resort Ambassador Daron Rahlves will race against the four men’s skiing division winners from each stop on this year’s tour. This grand finale will not disappoint, as it provides the only opportunity during the tour to witness Rahlves putting his technical skills and all out effort to the test against the crowned winners of the tour who will be vying to beat Rahlves and to take home the title of “Banzai Master” with a cash prize of $10,000; winner takes all.
Friday night before each tour stop, competing athletes, sponsors, media and special guests are invited to the event kick-off, “Rahlves' Banzai Welcome Party”. The location will be announced closer to the event dates. On Saturday after the solo qualifying timed runs to seed Sunday's Finals and heats of four, all competing athletes, sponsors, media and fans are invited to celebrate all things Banzai at the 3-6pm “Rahlves' Banzai Après Party” thrown by High Fives Foundation, a Truckee, CA based non-profit organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for athletes who have suffered a life-altering injury while pursuing their dream in the winter action sports community. A portion of the proceeds from Sierra Nevada beers purchased throughout the evening and raffle prizes will be donated to High Fives.
Competitors aged 18 and up are encouraged to start polishing up on their schussing big mountain skills and get ready to enter the men’s and women’s ski and snowboard divisions for the tour.
Make plans to catch the high-speed action at each tour stop including:
• Kirkwood Mountain Resort Feb. 2-3, 2013
• Alpine Meadows Feb. 9-10, 2013
• Squaw Valley Mar. 2-3, 2013
• Sugar Bowl Resort Mar. 9-10, 2013
The race continued with one event for another year, and then Rahlves decided to take the show on the road, officially launching the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour and expanding to stops at four of Lake Tahoe's premier resorts.
Building on the tour’s success and evolution, Rahlves has designated the worthy High Fives Foundation as the tour’s official non-profit partner, while leveraging big name sponsors such as Red Bull, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Contour, CEP “intelligent sportswear”, North Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, Jagermeister, Spyder, Atomic, Start Haus Ski Shop, Wend Wax, COAL, The Bar Effect, World Cup Supply, Snow Fest, Sports Insurance and CRUX Events, thereby creating an alluring $80,000 prize purse.
Media coverage will include, Live event coverage on Sunday by 101.5FM Truckee-Tahoe Radio, Tahoe TV event edits for web / local tv, POWDER Magazine coverage and more.

Opening Day Jitters Opening Day Jitters
- From: johnwellsma
-
Description:
Coffee, beer, cashews, gum, and gas - that’s all I need. That, and about 2.5 hours of sleep, and I’m set for opening day. The night before, all energies flow into one as I obsessively prepare for the sickest day of skiing ever.
Straight-lining Crystal Bowl at Kicking Horse, and making GS pow turns on the opener never gets old. Being the first person to ski lift line on Blackcomb’s Jersey Cream is fun, if you can handle the eyes on you. Getting white-walled at Baker on your first step into the slackcountry and having a buddy to help you up is the essence of skiing, and the reason you prepare.
Speeding down Baker HWY 542 toward Mt. Baker, all the memories of the past 900 times I have been down this road over the last nine years come flooding back. I end up being so early, few people are there besides the employees and a handful of hardcores. I walk over to Chair 1, I drop my skis next to a pair that I know all too well. Killing time, drinking coffee, and chatting to fellow shredders, the excitement builds. We wait another hour bouncing around, stretching, adjusting loose Dukes, and chewing gum. What’s another couple hours when it has been over 225 days since my last powder day? I’m ready to pop off.
Most people watch ski videos to get pumped to shred, but the night before, while waxing my skis, turning my DIN up to 14, and putting rain-x on my top sheets and poles, I pop on Dust to Glory and marvel at Johnny Campbell flooring it across the beach. Or I watch GoPros Monsters of Motocross edit along with some raw POV footage of my buddy’s Russian Yak plane doing acrobatics and I am stoked, it’s kind of weird. But hey, whatever gets you revved up. Don’t get me wrong, I still love ski vids, I just like taking it up a notch and throwing in an engine sometimes. I chirp myself into the night cleaning goggles, charging GoPros, and preparing my protein smoothie for the onslaught that I know will happen if only I can get there first.
I haven’t missed an opening day in the last 10 years except for a relative’s funeral, but that goes without saying. It can be the most important day of the year, or the most insignificant. It can be a baller, high-fiving pow day with renewed friends, or an icy downhill hockey event like Red Bull Crashed Ice. Luckily the latter rarely happens at the powder capital of North America, Mt. Baker.
With a 67-inch base that accumulated over a four- to five-day storm cycle, Mt. Baker opened its lifts to the public with limited trails, but loads of snow beyond the ropes. On opening day, all was good in the land of winter.
A few days later, on Friday November 23, Blackcomb Mountain received 10-inches of new snow and had a clearing trend for the rest of the weekend. It was a good start to the season, launching me right back into the ether. With another couple of successful opening days to add to my growing list of memories, I am happy settling back into the frantic pace we call skiing. - Blog post
