8 teams of skiing's elite film crews featuring the likes of Level 1 Productions, 4bi9 Media, Traveling Circus, Step Productions, Inspired Media, The Kids, Toy Soldier Productions and Me Gustan Aviones came costume clad, ready to throw down and eager to claim bragging rights and the $10,000 cold hard cash compliments of Go Pro that come with 1st place.

Level 1 took top honors and the white dinner jackets.
4bi9 Media claimed second and a trip to Retallack lodge.
And The Traveling Circus rounded out the top 3 earning a 5 day trip back to the host resort, Sun Valley.

Call outs to Johnny G's subshack for feeding the crews and of course Freeskier Magazine for playing the role of our fantabulous media partner of choice.

Camp life is a multi-dimensional reality—a temporary town established to facilitate exploration in unfamiliar territory. And all the while snowskate course maintenance and games of beer spear escalate.
You see, when we got here, we were greeted with high fives and the pure excitement that you love to feel after your very best ski sessions with your best ski buds. Then we watched them fly off the frozen lake and we moved into their tents. I also remember hearing a “This is the coolest thing we've ever done. Later!”
So now we are posted up in paradise, skiing lines we've never skied before—on mountains none of us have ever seen before. Without a cloud in the sky like we've never dreamed before. Here we are—Fantasy Camp. Time to put on the boots.

  • Zack Giffin's Tiny House - BD Zack Giffin's Tiny House - BD Crash Pads Episode 2

    • From: blackdiamond
    • Description:

Here at Black Diamond, our athletes' all-consuming drive to spend as much time in the mountains, at the crags and on the trails as possible tends to make for some interesting living situations. Modded-out cargo vans, backwoods shacks, parents' basements and musty expedition tents-the idiosyncratic places they reside when they're not doing what they do are a defining testament to the Black Diamond team's passion for climbing and skiing. Whether it's just a place to store gear, a comfy base to rest up for the next adventure or a traveling home on wheels, this ongoing series will give you an inside look at the places BD climbers and skiers call home.

This month we caught up with BD skier Zack Giffin, who had his super-unique tiny house on wheels parked in the Alta Ski Area parking lot in the midst of a massive mid-winter storm. In between pow laps, Zack was kind enough to give us the tour of his custom-built rolling ski cabin.

      Tim Durtschi in Austria
      Words By Tim Durtschi
      Photos by Dutch Simpson

After our weeklong stay at the Bluebird Mountain Hostel and good times skiing in Hochfugen, Austria, it was off to Fieberbrunn.

Fieberbrunn is a powder paradise. It has five gondolas: more than any other type of lift at the resort. We took advantage of the easily accessible tree skiing during the heavy storm that hit the day of our arrival.

Our trusty guide Marcus informed us that we arrived to one of the biggest storms that they have seen all season, and the cold weather made for some blower pow. Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Dylan Hood, Colter Hinchliffe and myself made laps from open to close and there was still massive amounts of unskied terrain that made us anxious to get up in the morning and do it all over again.

When the pow stopped falling (we were starting to feel like it never would) our friend Matthias Haunholder took us to some really fun lines off the backside near the Wildseeloder Lodge. The Atomic team manager, Chris Mckearin, came over from the Atomic factory, which is a short 1.5-hour drive away, and got to ski with us for two days.

It was pretty cool to be able to ski with your team manager, especially during a film shoot. I mean, you definitely don’t want to crash in front of your team manager … actually he’s a pretty cool guy, so it’s no big deal.

This week in Fieberbrunn marks the end of our month long journey through the Tirol Valley of Austria. It has been awesome, good times the entire way through, we got to see a huge amount of terrain over the course of our migration, but there is still so much that we could experience. I will definitely be back in the Alps in the future, there is so much opportunity here, and with such welcoming people, it’s hard to say “no” when they say kommen sie bald wieder!

      Lindsey Vonn

VAIL, CO – Olympic champion Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) underwent successful surgery Sunday and is resting comfortably. According to U.S. Women’s Alpine Ski Team Head Physician Dr. Bill Sterett, the surgery conducted at the Vail Valley Surgery Center went well and he was optimistic for a full recovery.

"While it was too early to issue a specific prognosis on Vonn, Dr. Bill Sterett, U.S. Women’s Alpine Ski Team Head Physician said: “The overall success rate for ACL/MCL surgery is very good. Modern surgical techniques combined with aggressive rehabilitation will help Lindsey make a full recovery. She will do everything in her power to return as quickly as possible to competitive skiing.”

      Story via the L.A. Times

Skier Lindsey Vonn was taken to the hospital by helicopter Tuesday after crashing during the super-G at the world championships in Schladming, Austria.

She appeared to have injured her right knee and was treated on the slope for 12 minutes before being airlifted to the hospital.

The injury occurred while the four-time World Cup champion was landing a jump. After losing balance on her right leg, with her knee bending awkwardly, Vonn's ski came off immediately, causing her to go off course and hit a gate before stopping.

The race had already been postponed 3½ hours due to fog and several competitors struggled due to the weather.

“It's not a very difficult course, but in some parts you couldn't see anything,” Fabienne Suter of Switzerland said.

Vonn had just returned to racing earlier this year after taking nearly a month off to recover from an intestinal illness.

    • From: 4frntskis
    • Description:

In the Open Men’s’ class on Saturday, the top 7 competitors after a 2 run qualifier advanced to a two run final where Alex Dorszynski rose above the other competitors to win the division and the coveted one-year sponsorship from 4FRNT Skis. Alex, along with Scott Pollman, Bryce Hanrahan, Eric Lee O’Brien, Justin Dye, Barret Young and Evan Haines advanced to Sunday’s Pro class competition as result of making finals.

Finals day on Sunday, Parker White’s consistently performed run composed of a fluid upper cliff section down into a 360 off a 30’cliff, a cork 7 on the hip and a P-White signature front flip out of the “rut-jump” at the bottom put him on top of the podium. Due to heating temps and isothermal conditions, the finals was reduced to a 1 run format where the latter 4 athletes found themselves fighting a crash as conditions set up and legs became tired. 4FRNT Team Rider, Thayne Rich washed out on his double-flip attempt on the last hit, which put him in second place. Kyle Johnston rounded out the Pro class podium with monster cliff airs and a bail attempt at a cliff air 720. Sean Fields found his swift line choice a bit too fast as he clipped a rock in the upper section for 4th and Utah based shred, Luke Perin rounded things out with a monster backflip after a miss-hap following a half cab attempt on the upper cliffs to take home 5th.

  • Interview: TGR Skier Erik Rone Interview: TGR Skier Erik Roner Stars In Nitro Circus 3D Movie

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

Erik Roner has starred in Teton Gravity Research movies for almost a decade. For the past few years he’s been known in the ski world for his stand-out ski-BASE jumping segments in our films. His current web series Roner Vision is one of the best ski-athlete series out there. But mainstream America knows Roner for being on the MTV show Nitro Circus with Travis Pastrana. For the past two years Roner and the Nitro crew have been creating a feature-length 3D film to share with the world. On Wednesday, August 8, the movie hits 1000 theaters across the country. We caught up with Roner before the premiere to find out more about the movie and what it’s like to film with the Nitro Circus crew.

       nitro team

TGR: How did Nitro Circus 3D come about? What did it take to make this happen?

Erik Roner: We did two seasons with MTV, then more or less took the last two years to focus on doing this movie. And in doing this movie we came across a lot of hardships and a lot of learning curves, dealing with Hollywood, dealing with insurance, dealing with the studios, and we've kind of just had to force feed this the whole way. We ended up financing it ourselves, because at first a lot of the studios, when they heard about all the stunts we wanted to do, they said "There's no way we're going to be able to insure this." We kind of did it under the radar and then sold it back to the studios after we had done it. So, fortunately, it worked out and we're hoping everyone likes it.

      airborne tubing

TGR: How did Nitro Circus begin? To me, it kind of comes out of the Jackass realm of things. Is anyone from Jackass involved in Nitro Circus, or is it a completely different crew?

Erik Roner: It started out with Travis Pastrana filming stuff in his backyard with the neighbors, cousins, whomever he could get over there. And then he started making DVDs to help pay for everything they were wrecking and destroying.

Greg Godfrey was in Hollywood trying to be filmer/director guy. He saw Crusty Demons III, and he said "That's what I want to do." He moved to Utah, did one film-shoot with Travis, and saw how gnarly Travis is and how motivating he is to people around him, and said "Hey, do you what to go into business together?" So sure enough, they started Nitro Circus and started shooting DVDs for awhile.

Then Johnny Knoxville and Dickhouse Productions did an Evil Knievel tribute with Travis' Nitro Circus crew. After that, those guys said "We need to do a TV show with them." And they were an instrumental part of lining up the MTV show we did for two seasons. After that, when we started doing this movie, this movie was all Godfrey Entertainment. So the Jackass guys helped, like Knoxville and Jermaine from Jackass have good interviews in the movie, kind of talking about who we are and what we do. So they're definitely a part of the movie, but as far as directing and putting the movie together, they didn't have any part in it.

       motogeddon

TGR: Tell me about the movie. Have you watched the movie yet? Have you seen a final cut?

Erik Roner: Yeah, we had a screening at X Games at that Mann's Chinese Theatre down on Sunset Boulevard, which kind of felt like a premiere. You know, over a thousand people, kind of key industry people, and all the Jackass guys were there. The feedback was really good. I was really impressed with the movie. I was questioning it at first: If we, on our own, could pull off a theatrical movie. Of course we could do the DVD stunts, stunt reels for the ADD crowd that we're so accustomed to. But actually putting together a theatrical movie, that mom and pops and the kids are going to want to see, as well as our hardcore fan base is going to want to see. And I surely think we did. There's a nice storyline throughout it that kind of shows where we've come from and the type of people we are. And there's a lot of insane stunts that we do where people are laying their lives on the line. There were definitely some accidents that happen along the way, and some hardships, but all-in-all we all came out in one piece and I think everyone's super proud of what they did for the movie, and everyone's really excited to share it with the world.

       Freedom-8-M-thumb.jpg

TGR: Who's in the Nitro Circus crew?

Erik Roner: The main cast is Travis Pastrana, Street Bike Tommy, Jolene Van Vugt, Me, Special Greg and Jim Dechamp. And we've included a couple new people in this movie, Aaron "Wheels" Fotheringham. He's the kid who's in our live show, he's in a wheel chair, he has spina bifida and the kid's nuts. He tries all kinds…he tried the loop, he does the mega-ramp. He's truly inspiring for the stuff he does and the situation he's at. And another guy we introduced is Dusty Wygel. He's just another kind of Special Greg-type kid that's pretty much good at everything and fun to have around. We use him as stunt-feed. "You're the new guy, you try this first." For us older guys that have been through the ranks.

       hangin out with nitro

TGR: Who comes up with the stunt concepts? Do you come up with your own or do you all talk about it together?

Erik Roner: A little bit of both. Some of the stunt ideas in the movie definitely were mine, and everyone tries to come up with a unique stunt for themselves, especially in this movie-type environment. We all get together and have big brainstorming sessions. We call it nitro-physics. Someone comes up with an idea, and then someone else chimes in, "Oh, well you could do that, but if you put this on top of it…or you put a little twist on it, and the stunt's this much better, or gnarlier, or this much more dramatic." So there's definitely a lot of brainstorming sessions that go down, but for the most part we all try to come up with individual stunts.

      sky blob nitro circus roner

TGR: What do you do in the movie? What parts are you in and what was the gnarliest thing you did for the flick?

Erik Roner: I have a few different things that I'm proud of. Without giving away too much of the movie, one involves a blob, a large building and base-jumping. Another one involves kind of a human-version of Angry Birds. And another involves a building-to-building gap jump with tricycles. It's like a 40-foot gap and the buildings are 400 feet high.  It's real intimidating. There's no safety nets. In real stunt movies, the details that go into every stunt are crazy. We're a little looser, we're a little more fly by the seam of your pants. We try to do things smart, we're not dumb, But at the same time, we don't have the budget or the time to spend to create these huge stunts. That's who we are and that’s the way we roll and that’s kind of always how we've been. We stay true to that in this movie, even though we were doing way bigger stunts, shooting them in 3D, and [it's] a lot bigger production.

       airborne

TGR: I'm excited for the 3D aspect.

Erik Roner: I've never really been to a lot of 3D movies and I've heard a lot of people say they give them headaches. They really did a great job capturing 3D. There's a few scenes in there where we heard people say it was the best 3D they've seen. There's a big crossover scene where there's trophy trucks and dirt bikes and helicopters and monster trucks, and everyone's jumping at the same time. And the 3D had it so layered that you really feel like you’re right there, it's so neat.

       explosion nitro circus

TGR: What's it like filming with those guys compared with filming a ski movie?

Erik Roner: There're similarities and there're differences. There's still the nerves the night before a big day, and you've got a lot of things you're laying on the line, and it's an intense situation. But you're with your friends, it's a scramble, you're having the time of your life, you're traveling around, it's so much fun. It's normally not as intense as skiing because when you'e out skiing you're always trying to get the best shot and film the most perfect line you can do. And we have an environment with Nitro where we kind of live by the ethic pass that there're a lot of failures. Still, you're out there trying new things, pushing things outside the comfort zone, and you're inventing stuff, straight up. You're doing things people have never done before, and whenever you're doing that you get footage, even if you lace it, or you completely wad up. So in that regard you're a little more lax, but at the same time you're always doing gnarly stuff.

       major bruise

TGR: What was the most memorable day shooting for you?

Erik Roner: My best shoot was when we went to Panama City. There're a lot of illegal things that are tough to do in the States, that either cost a fortune or everyone just says "no." You go to Panama and get someone a six-pack of beer and they let you on top of their roof, and you can do whatever you want. I personally had a lot of fun there. I always like when I get out of the States because the rules are easy to bend and it allows me to do the things that I want to do. Like I said, in this movie we've had some great successes, we had some some pretty big failures and some seriously close calls. Jim had a pretty bad car crash and was in a coma for a few days, but he's doing alright. But those things are serious, they're really real and it puts things into perspective. Everything we're doing and everything we believe in, and we're trying to push ourselves through, and to showcase to people that you can do. But some of the feedback we got from the movie was pretty inspirational, which kind of surprised us, because this is what we do, this is what we want to do. But people kind of look at it and say, "Wow, these guys are really pushing outside the limits, they're creating this job. They're creating this whole world where they travel with their friends, and it becomes a job." People were seeing it as inspirational, and that was really cool to hear.

      nitro crew

TGR: What's the whole message behind Nitro Circus?

Erik Roner: Motorsports is where it began, but it's become so much more than that. It's basically a competitive spirit among friends, pushing each other and pushing the limits of what's possible. In anything, you know? Whatever we can come up with, whatever we can do. It's just us having a great time, you know? Sometimes we come away inventing or creating something amazing, and sometimes we come away with broken bones. It's kind of the nature of the beast.

  • News: Freeride World Tour Sees News: Freeride World Tour Sees Perfect Conditions In Fieberbrunn, Austria

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

Winners: Drew Tabke, USA (ski men), Eva Walkner, AUT (ski women), Jonathan Charlet, FRA (snowboard men), Liz Kristoferitsch AUT (snowboard women)

The Tyrolean village of Fieberbrunn, Austria hosted a faultless last stage of the Swatch Freeride World Tour before the finals in Verbier, Switzerland. With 20 cm of fresh cold snow on a solid base, the athletes were fired-up to give the mountain their best shot and attempt to secure a place in the finals. The event village on the mountain was filled to capacity with over 3400 lucky spectators, witnessing the riders delivering an awesome performance.

Ski And Snowboard Women Charging Hard

The ski women started first and showcased high-level riding. It was a double win for Austria with local skier Eva Walkner displaying some impressive runs, proving she wanted the podium with a powerful, full-throttle line and big stomped airs.

“It is so amazing to win in Fieberbrunn!” Eva Walkner said. “The snow was perfect and everything came together exactly how I expected it to. It’s always difficult to manage risk and smooth, fluid skiing…but I did today in Fieberbrunn with a smooth, fun line.”

Swedish skier Christine Hargin, won the last event in Roldal and continued her podium streak with her aggressive lines. Today she was close on Eva’s heels with a second place.

      FWT Ski Women

Snowboarder Liz Kristoferitsch cranked out an adrenaline-filled line far right, bringing it home for Austria.

“I was really nervous before the event but now that I rode my line and won, the stress is gone,” Liz Kirstoferitsch said.

American Shannan Yates took a good line lookers left that secured a second spot among the snowboarders. Finally, the Kuzma sisters from New Zealand both took third in each category, skier Janina Kuzma stomping great air and snowboarder Maria Kuzma involving a cool spine at the top.

The fresh powder snow on the aesthetic North face of the Wildseeloder allowed the men skiers to show their very best performance and some amazing riding was witnessed. American skier Drew Tabke mixed high-level big mountain skiing with smooth freestyle tricks in his typical trademark style. A treat to watch, Tabke lit up the venue with his creative lines and massive 360 into a smooth backflip.
“Fieberbrunn is an awesome place to ski and the mountains here are amazing. I had a good line with a back flip and a 360. It’s going to be a close competition between Sam Smoothy (NZL) and I in Verbier,” Tabke said after his first-ever win on the Freeride World Tour, and now sitting on the second spot of the overall ranking.

Despite Sam Smoothy going a bit too big today and crashing, the New Zealander still tops the overall ranking.

French Rookie Kevin Guri, finally got to show the world how good he is and charged into second place with a huge double air and screaming-fast line. It’s young Guri’s first podium on the tour. As always, the Swedish bullet Reine Barkered fired a high-speed line with stomped airs bringing him to a third place finish. Some other impressive lines come to mind like Swiss Richard Amacker finishing like a boss with a frontflip and three straight jumps in a row or his fellow country man Samuel Anthamatten and German Tom Leitner pulling off a huge 360 on the middle cliff.

With a rough crash early in his line, previous favorites such as Oakley White-Allen (USA) were not able to hold it together for a good score.

French athlete Jonathan “Douds” Charlet rode a creative line with a technical couloir entrance and a couple of solid airs. Douds creative approach was enough give him first place finish and raise the bar for the other snowboarders.

“My run was very good. Many people took the line I initially intended to ride, so I chose a new one where nobody else went. I had jumps and I had a straight line. And we had good powder! Now I have the chance to win the tour in Verbier!” He said.

Local Austrian and veteran rider Flo Orley delivered his patented solid line style and technical riding. As impressive as Orley’s line was, it was not enough to place an Austrian on the top of the men’s snowboard podium. The French big mountain rider Aurélien Routens rode a powerful line with a big double-set air that brought him into a respectable third place.

It’s all on for the finals in Verbier!

    • Description:

      Sarah Burke

Pioneering Whistler halfpipe freestyle skier Sarah Burke is in critical condition in a coma following a crash in Park City, Utah, on Tuesday.

Burke, 29, was training on Park City Mountain Resort’s “Eagle Superpipe” in the early afternoon when she suffered a head injury following a landing, witnesses said.

“Apparently she landed on her feet at the bottom of the pipe and then kind of bounced on to her head,” said Canadian Freestyle Ski Association CEO Peter Judge, who heard accounts from athletes at the scene.

“It didn’t look like it was a real stunner of a fall, but obviously it was one of those ones where she hit just right and it was more pointed than it appeared.”

Park City Mountain Resort mountain patrol stabilized her at the scene and then transported her to base patrol, said Andy Miller, the resort’s communications manager.

“From there, she was flown to a hospital in Salt Lake City,” he said.

Judge said the severity of her injury is not yet known.

“The thing with head injuries, and even comas, is that they can be very deceiving,” Judge said. “A coma could be something that’s quite mild, and you come out of in a certain period of time, or it can be significant. At this point, it’s pretty speculative to try and pin exactly what it is, or what the implications of it are.”

The 22-foot superpipe hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics men’s and women’s snowboard halfpipe events and the 2011 FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships halfpipe competition.

It is the same superpipe where snowboarder Kevin Pearce was severely injured during training on Dec. 31, 2009. Pearce suffered traumatic brain injuries but recovered and returned to riding on snow last month.

As of late Tuesday, Burke’s husband, skier Rory Bushfield, and Burke’s mother were trying to arrange travel to Salt Lake City.

“Sarah is a very, very strong human and she will be fine,” Bushfield said.

BAD KLEINKIRCHHEIM, Austria - Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) stormed to second and led three Americans into the top 10 at the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup downhill in Bad Kleinkirchheim. World Cup overall and downhill leader Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) survived a big mistake right out of the starting gate to finish fourth, missing the podium by a mere five hundredths. Reigning downhill World Champion Austrian Elisabeth Goergl of Austria won for her first World Cup downhill victory.

"It was a really cool to see such a solid performance from our team," Julia Mancuso said. "Lindsey is always fast, but it was good to see Stacey in there and Laurenne right back in it after her crash in Lake Louise."

Lindsey Vonn, still fighting a stomach bug, expanded her Audi FIS World Cup overall lead by finishing fourth. Vonn also continues to lead the World Cup downhill standings.

"I'm really happy for Julia with second and for Liz Goergl for winning at home," Lindsey Vonn said. "I'm still happy with fourth considering where my strength is, but Lizzy and Julia skied really well and deserved to be on the podium."
