  • Third Annual Beartooth Summer Third Annual Beartooth Summer Session Presented by ON3P Ski Company

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

      Beartooth

The Third Annual Beartooth Summer Session is set to occur from Wednesday through Sunday, June 5th-June 9th at Beartooth Basin Ski Area, formerly Red Lodge International Summer Ski Camp, and in the surrounding backcountry.

The little ski area, near the top of Beartooth Pass on the Montana/Wyoming border, features two high-speed poma lifts, steeps,  chutes, cornices, and a terrain  park at the bottom.  The ski area was first opened in the 1960s as a venue for summer  ski race training.  During the late 1990s and early 2000s the ski area saw an influx of newschool skiing. Mickey Price, Tony Gilpin, Glen Plake, and Donovan Power trained and coached alongside Tanner Hall, Wiley Miller, Paul Cotter, and many others.  Prominent film companies such as Teton Gravity Research, Team 13, and Toy Soldier Productions have featured  footage from the Beartooth Basin Ski Area in their films.

The Second Annual Beartooth Summer Session  brought approximately 100 skier visits and 40 competitors from all around North America. Writers from Teton Gravity Research, Sking Magazine, Bomb Snow Magazine, and Explore Big Sky covered the event.

ON3P Ski Company and other sponsors will be working with the ski area to host the session and build a quality terrain park and competition course. The event, terrain park, and ski area will be open to the public as well as to invited riders and photographers. In addition to world-class, lift-accessible summer skiing, the surrounding area has excellent backcountry access, including day-long tours, boot packs, and car shuttle laps.

On Saturday, June 8th, a big-mountain/slopestyle competition will take place at Beartooth Basin. Competitors will take top-to-bottom runs and be judged on style, technique,  amplitude, and consistency.

ON3P will have its fleet of demo skis available free to the public. Tickets to the ski area will be discounted for session attendees to $40 per day. Half day tickets for $35 will also be available.

More details including group lodging options, competition  registration, and a roster of invited riders will be published at www.beartoothsummersession.com . View the rest of the media gallery here. We hope to see you next month in the Beartooths.

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

Dew Tour Mens Superpipe podium 2012
The Dew Tour Men’s Freeski Superpipe Final brought great skiing, crowd energy and progression of riding in Breckenridge, Colorado.

Coming into the finals were the top ten of 21 skiers from the semi-final, and, just like the semi-final, those riders competing in the finals were given two chances to take to the pipe and put it all on the line in a last ditch effort to take home the 2012 Dew Cup.

Mike Riddle was the number one qualifier coming into finals, however the lineup of skiers included a number of riders that could easily come in hot and create an upset.

Justin Dorey showed up to do just that, and on his first run Dorey exploded out of the pipe and picked up a high score of 93.50 that put him on the top of the list for the rest of the event. Dorey’s run included a right double 1260 safety, left 900 tail, air-to-fakie, switch 720 Japan, alley-oop left flat 540 critical and a left double 1260 Japan.

“Riddle has been on point this year, stomping runs better than anyone I have ever seen this year,” said Dorey with regard to his competition. “The fact that [Dew Tour] is doing this stop bigger than any other is pretty cool. Breckenridge is sick, this is one of the best pipes in the world and the weather always seems to cooperate with us – Breck has been good to me over the years.”

In the end, Dorey rode out the overall winner and Dew Cup champ, Byron Wells took home the second place position and the top qualifier coming into the event, Riddle, rode out with a respected third place.

      TNF Park And Pipe Thumbnail
Salt Lake City, Utah — The first stop of the 2013 The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series  (PPOS) kicks off with an exciting halfpipe competition at Copper Mountain, Colo. on Dec. 8-9, 2012. The North Face PPOS allows top-level professionals and up-and-coming freeskiing athletes the opportunity to advance in the competition circuit at all four stops throughout the 2013 tour.

“The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series is very important for North American freeskiing athletes,” said Steele Spence, PPOS series head judge. “The series is a stepping stone for athletes hoping to progress to the top level of competition. The events are very well organized with a full panel of Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) certified judges and courses at world-class resorts.”

The first stop at Copper Mountain will be the first AFP sanctioned event in the United States for the 2013 competition season. In addition, the Copper Mountain event will be an International Ski Federation (FIS) sanctioned NORAM CUP event with athletes earning FIS points.

“FIS is excited to be able to integrate The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series events in Copper Mountain, CO and Northstar, CA into the 2012-13 FIS Freestyle NORAM NORAM CUP,” said Konrad X Rotermund, FIS Freestyle Continental Cup Coordinator-Americas. “These events will provide a great opportunity for athletes to get their needed FIS points to be part of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games qualification process and/or earn the opportunity to be the NORAM CUP Champion. Recognizing schedules are very full in North America, it is great to be able to cooperate with the already established PPOS events to give the athletes multiple avenues to meet their competitive goals in a single event.”

Halfpipe skiing will make its Olympic debut in 2014 at the Sochi, Russia Winter Games. The PPOS will work in conjunction with the AFP to ensure professional competition judging in accordance with AFP standards and criteria. Judging is based on overall impression, including content, difficulty of run, style and use of park or pipe.

“I am excited to be a part of the The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series at Copper Mountain,” said The North Face Athlete Mike Riddle. “The best athletes in the world are all converging at the resort this early season to get dialed in for the coming season. The event will see a very skilled field showing-off the tricks they have practiced all summer.”

The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series at Copper Mountain begins on Friday, Dec. 7 with athlete registration. The competition kicks off on Saturday, Dec. 8 with practice and qualifiers in the Main Vein Superpipe, and concludes on Sunday, Dec. 9 with finals. Coinciding with The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series, Copper Mountain’s celebrates its 40th Anniversary Dec. 7-9. Specials throughout the weekend include $40 lift tickets, $40 Woodward Intro Sessions, $40 Ski & Ride School Lessons, $40 rentals for two, and many more.

The U.S. Freeskiing and U.S. Snowboarding athletes will also gather at Copper Mountain on Saturday, Dec. 8 for the annual U.S. Freeskiing and U.S. Snowboarding team naming event at 2:45 p.m. followed by a free concert by the Neil Diamond cover band, Super Diamond at 3 p.m. in Burning Stones Plaza. Enter to win a private meet and greet with America’s snowboarding and freeskiing Olympic hopefuls at www.facebook/CopperMtn or www.facebook/US-Freeskiing.

The field is absolutely stacked for the Copper Mountain pipe event. Twenty-four women and 65 men will be taking on Copper’s 22-foot superpipe seeking not only the PPOS event win, but AFP and FIS points. With names including Tanner Hall, Rosalind Groenewoud, Justin Dorey, Maddie Bowman, and the Wells brothers all in attendance, it is going to be an all out battle for the title.

Dew Tour to Debut Ski and Snowboard Big Air and Downtown Breckenridge Events

Burr Ridge, III – November 19, 2012 - The Dew Tour today announced the first round of confirmed athletes for the iON Mountain Championships in Breckenridge, Colo., December 13-16. The new Dew Tour will feature the world’s top freestyle skiers and snowboarders as they converge in Breckenridge to kick off the first major event of the winter action sports season.  The only winter event of the bigger, better 2012 Dew Tour will feature more competitions, including ski and snowboard Big Air, as well as a Film Night and concert that will take over downtown Breckenridge.

The iON Mountain Championships will feature the top names in men’s and women’s snowboarding hitting the Dew Tour Superpipe and Slopestyle course.  Olympic gold medalist Shaun White will bring his one-of-a-kind tricks to the Superpipe, while Iouri Podladtchikov and fun-loving Frends Scotty Lago and Jack and Luke Mitrani attempt to keep him off of the podium.  Last year’s Dew Cup winner, Louie Vito, will aim to gain his third consecutive Cup during the winner-takes-all weekend.  Several snowboarders will be splitting their time between hitting features on the Slopestyle course and triple corking in the Dew Tour’s debut Big Air contest.  Mark McMorris, Sebastien Toutant, Torstein Horgmo and Breckenridge local Eric Willett are sure to be pushing the progression of snowboarding as Dew Tour kicks off the 2012-2013 winter season.

Competition will be close on the women’s side, as Superpipe dominator Kelly Clark attempts to defend her Dew Cup champion title.  Gretchen Bleiler, Elena Hight and 2010 Olympic gold medalist Torah Bright will also look to get their seasons started at the top of the podium.  Perennial Slopestyle contender Jamie Anderson will face off against Canadian Spencer O’Brien and a strong international field of up-and-coming women for the Slopestyle Dew Cup.

“I’m really excited to start the season competing at the Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships in Breckenridge,” said Lago. “The riders get one shot at a Dew Cup for the year, and there will be a lot of heavy hitters, so everyone will be bringing our best to the event.”

Freestyle skiing events will see the athletes sizing each other up after an off-season spent training for one of the sport’s biggest stages at the Dew Tour.  Simon Dumont and Tanner Hall will meet in the Superpipe, hoping their experience is enough to overtake Kevin Rolland, the winner of last year’s Dew Cup.  Breckenridge team skier Bobby Brown will attempt to use home slope advantage against Nick Goepper and previous Dew Cup champ Tom Wallisch on the Slopestyle course.  The three will also be among those competing in Big Air.

The pressure will also be on the women as they compete for Dew Cups in Superpipe and Slopestyle.  Canadian Rosalind Groenewoud will aim for the top spot on the podium in Pipe, fending off Maddie Bowman, Brita Sigourney and Jen Hudak.  Slopestyle could be anyone’s game, as Kaya Turski and locals Keri Herman and Emilia Wint lead the top names set to compete at Breckenridge.

The Dew Tour’s new format for 2012 includes an expansion of events throughout the weekend, bringing the action sports and lifestyle festival to Breckenridge.  The world’s best skiers and snowboarders will throw it down on the mountain while the lifts are running, with the spotlight swinging to the Riverwalk Center and downtown area in the evenings, featuring a Film Night recognizing the most influential and progressive films of the season.  The iON Mountain Championships will also include a concert, set to be announced at a later date.

  • News: Tanner Hall Wins Halfpip News: Tanner Hall Wins Halfpipe At The North Face Freeski Open Of New Zealand

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

Tanner Hall returns to half pipe competition and takes the win. Jossi Wells was sitting in the top spot after semi finals. Bad weather stopped competition after just one run of the finals with the judges unable to see leaving the riders with the scores they had posted in the first run. Tanner Hall (USA) was on top infront of Torin Yater-Wallace (USA) and Benoit Valentine (FRA) took third throwing a double on his first hit. Jossi was left hanging in 4th place on 78 points but look poised to take the win if more runs had been on offer.
