  • Resort Review: Mt. Baker, Wash Resort Review: Mt. Baker, Washington Home To The Legendary Banked Slalom Snowboard Race

      Mt. Baker LBS

The Mt. Baker Ski Area is a tiny ski resort located in the USA near Canada, known for having the most snow in North America averaging an impressive 641 inches of snow annually. The resort even broke the record for total snowfall during the 98-99 season with a whopping 1,140 inches of snow.  Located within the Mt. Baker-Snowqualmie National Forrest the Mt. Baker Ski Area was created in 1940 as a recreational destination for Washington residents.  Fast forward almost 75 years and the terrain and base area still look almost exactly the same. You won’t find any real estate for sale or overpriced ski shops here.

The nearest lodging to the ski resort is located 30 miles down the road in the town of Glacier, Washington where to the locals the lack of internet and cell service is a welcome relief. For travelers you truly have to adapt while stepping back in time. If your sole focus is riding powder and ripping it fall line you’d be hard pressed to find better terrain in North America.  Short vertical runs average around 1,000 feet with access to some of the rowdiest terrain around, combined with a lack of crowds and non–existent lift lines and you have the breeding grounds for some of the best riders in the world to test their skills.  Its no wonder people like Carter Turk, Craig Kelly, Jamie Lynn, Jeff Fulton, George St. James, Tex Davenport, Mike Ranquet, Lucas DeBari, Forrest Burki, and every other ripper in the snowboard industry has called this mountain home.

Baker’s roots in snowboarding go way back, this was the first resort in the United States to truly embrace snowboarding and has been home to the Legendary Baked Slalom snowboard race, the longest running snowboarding competition in the world for the last 27 years. The resort is family run and operated which is extremely rare these days, maybe that’s why parking is free and lift tickets are only $50 a day.

If you like to hike, or just access life changing terrain it happens quick at Baker.  The resort’s backcountry policy allows for skiers and riders to duck ropes if the following conditions are met, you must have a partner, avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe and backpack along with an understanding of the terrain.  Ropes here are meant to be ducked, just not the ones with 2 sets of ropes as those lines lead to un-survivable cliffs, which  are numerous within the resorts boundaries. If you’re smart and a strong rider you can shred some of the best lift accessed terrain in North America, if you blow it you may end up seriously hurt or even worse.

Each year 100 lucky snowboarders are chosen by lottery to compete in the Legendary Banked Slalom (LBS) snowboard race.  Getting a spot is truly an honor especially when you’re an unknown rider like myself.  Looking at the start list for this years race names like Travis Rice, Terje Haakonsen, Temple Cummins and Blair Habenicht certainly stand out!

The LBS course is dug by hand each year in a natural half pipe with banked slalom gates running from top to bottom.  The start shack is legendary in itself with the words “stay low, say your prayers” painted across the entrance, good advise indeed. Unlike other snowboard contest the vibe at the Mt. Baker Legendary Banked Slalom is all about having fun, maybe it’s due to the fact there is no prize money to win, instead the best snowboarders in the world hurl themselves down an icy course for the chance to win a roll of duct tape and a Carhartt jacket.

Snowboarders from all over the world come to the event annually driving up the Mt. Baker Highway to see old friends, rip powder in an effort to cement their names in the history books.  Just being selected to race is an honor in itself. The LBS is regarded as the predecessor to boardercross races.

The LBS takes place over 3 days giving each rider 2 days to qualify for a shot to ride in the finals. Plenty of high fives, hoots and hollers will follow each run, as the course is lined by locals, media, competitors and visiting riders all looking to see fast and flawless runs.

Wondering what the secret is to win, so am I.  To win a roll of duct tape your wax must be dialed for the Northwest snow that tends to be warmer than most places in the country. Sharp edges seem to help too especially when 100 riders slide down the same line creating an extremely fast course. Racers times tend to get faster as the day progresses.

Guys like Blair Habenicht, Terje Haakonsen and Temple Cummins seem un-phased by the icy conditions each year. However this year just may be a bit different as the resort is calling for between 2-4 feet of snow the week leading up to the start of the race.

Stay tuned for TGR’s updates throughout the week from the 2013 Legendary Banked Slalom race at Mt. Baker!

Jeremy Jones' Further World Premiere at Squaw Valley

Story and Photos by Seth Lightcap

It’s easy to throw around the word 'epic,' but really, what else do you call a world premiere showing at the base of Squaw Valley’s KT-22 chairlift packed with a couple thousand people all celebrating under the stars? Epic pretty much nails it, right?

Seriously though, THOUSANDS of fans and friends descended on Squaw Valley for the world premiere of Further last Friday bringing with them an atmosphere that was truly indescribable with words even as epic as 'epic.' The only thing that does justice to describing the show of support for Jeremy Jones and the new movie at the premiere is the size of the words that were projected onto Squaw’s Tram Face that night - F@%KING HUGE!

The gravity of the occasion was not lost on the man of the hour, Jeremy Jones.

“The energy tonight is really special,” Jeremy said as he gazed into crowd that stretched back from the screen over 200 yards. “It’s why we make these films - to get everyone together for a gathering of the tribe. What’s also cool is that we are on very hallowed ground standing at the base of KT. That lift has had such a huge impact on my life and the lives of many other people here tonight. It’s really, really special.”

Fellow Further star Ryland Bell was equally blown away by the showing.

“People were flooding in,” Bell said. ”Way more people came out than I thought. The stoke was super high.”

Lucas Debari, the third rider in the ultra heavy AK segment of Further, bumped the stoke assessment of the evening even higher still.

“I bet Burning Man didn’t have a higher stoke per person ratio than out here tonight,” Debari said.

      Teton Gravity Research Further Crew

It was a toss-up who the night really belonged to. Of course it belonged to the fans who came out to show the love and witness the debut of a ground-breaking backcountry snowboarding film, but it also belonged to Jeremy and the Further production crew, who finally got the chance to celebrate after two years of tireless work. Before the showing Jeremy brought all the Further athletes and production staff to the stage to the thunderous appreciation of the crowd.

What those at Squaw saw on the big screen as the film rolled for the first time is also indescribable. How do you describe the look on someone’s face after they’ve just ridden a life changing line at midnight in the Arctic Circle? Moments in the movie like these struck Further rider Forrest Shearer as one of the highlights of the film.

“I was really excited to see Terje Haakonsen riding with Jeremy in Svalbard,” Shearer said. “It’s a big deal to see him on one of these missions and watching him and Jeremy shred together in such a special zone was super sick.”

When asked about what this film meant to him, Jeremy described it point blank - Further is his best effort yet.

“This is a no B.S. look into going into the mountains and doing our thing,” Jones said. “It captures the highs and the lows and it’s pretty revealing. The people I surrounded myself with on this project were the best people I could and we all put everything we had into it. What you see in the movie is our best effort.”

The Squaw village during the Further premiere

The evening’s festivities started in the sponsor village where fans had the chance to check out Jeremy’s outwear collection from O’neill, fondle the 2013 Jones Snowboards lineup and learn about Cloudline’s shred tours to Japan. Clif Bar kept people snacking on tasty morsels while they waited to get a poster signed by Jeremy and Forrest Shearer.

The support from these sponsors plus many others is what made the Further project possible, Jeremy said before the premiere.

“Everyone says you gotta thank the sponsors but you really do,” Jeremy said. ”We couldn’t have made this with out them. Action sports films in general are really important to the community and the sponsors make them happen. Huge props to them, the production crew and the riders!”

Jeremy Jones signs autographs at the Further premiere

Kids of all ages lined up to get an autographed poster from Jeremy Jones and Forrest Shearer before the premiere.

Jones Snowboards at the Further premiere

The 2013 Jones Snowboards Carbon boards were looking ridiculously hot on display. The Carbon Flagship and the Carbon Solution (a splitboard version of the Flagship) were the boards Jeremy and Ryland rode in Alaska’s Wrangell St. Elias range while filming for Further.

Sky Divers at the Further premiere

The Squaw Valley Air Force jumped out of a plane as the party people started to assemble in the sponsor village.

The auction at the Further premiere

Prior to the premiere there was a silent auction benefiting Protect Our Winters. Lucky bidders donated thousands of dollars to an amazing cause and took home gear and auction items worthy of drooling over.

      Lucky raffle winner

When the lights went down, the raffle kicked into high gear. This lucky dude won a Jones Snowboard’s Solution splitboard and had the board handed over to him by the man himself.

Further athletes Lucas Debari, Ryland Bell and Forrest Shearer

Everyone was thrilled to see the movie, but these three were probably a bit more anxious to see it than most. Further athletes Lucas Debari, Ryland Bell and Forrest Shearer finally got to see their hard work the last two winters pay off on the big screen.

Squaw Valley's Tram Face lit up

If you missed the Further World Premiere at Squaw Valley, I’m sorry. As you can tell by the look of Squaw’s Tram Face, the atmosphere in the air was all-time. But don’t stress it! That wasn’t your last chance to see Further on the big screen. The Further premiere tour will be stopping down at nearly a hundred different locations worldwide over the course of the next three months. Don’t miss the show when it comes near you!

      Next Further premiere tour stops:

Jeremy Jones talks with Buoloco about Further. After personally seeing the footage, people will be blown away by Terje Haakonsen as he's hiking walls in the middle of nowhere and shredding them afterwards. The walls may look innocent, but they're far from it.

Lucas Debari is shredding Alaska and Forrest Shearer shreds Japan. They both have insane parts. In the mix is Ralph Backstrom shredding non-stop. Last but not least is Josh Dirksen, aka Rancho Relaxo, showing class and style.

Jeremy Jones, the back-bone structure of this film, shows us why he carries the light during the whole show. He also tells us how and why he chose each professional snowboarder to be a part of this project.

  • News: Burton U.S. Open Moves T News: Burton U.S. Open Moves To Vail After 30 Years In Vermont, Adds Slopestyle Event

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

      Burton US Open

Vail, Colorado – The Burton U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships, at home in Vermont for the past thirty years, are moving to Vail, Colorado, in 2013. The change in location was announced monday by Burton Snowboards and Vail Resorts. After 27 years at Stratton Mountain, Vermont, and thirty years in the state, the event will be held February 25 – March 3, 2013, at the area of Vail Resort known as Golden Peak.

Along with a change in venue, the event is shifting focus. Attention has long been centered around the halfpipe at the U.S. Open, with other events like racing, rail jams and big airs shifting in and out of the lineup over the years. When the contest makes its debut in its new home next season, slopestyle, which is now an official part of the Olympic Winter Games lineup, will be stepping boldly up to claim an equal share of the spotlight.

The news that the U.S. Open will no longer be held in Vermont, the state that gave birth to both Burton snowboards and the contest itself, is roughly the equivalent of the organizers of the Rose Bowl telling football fans that the game is keeping its name, and all the people who put it on are the same – it's just no longer going to be played in Pasadena.

"I just want to thank Stratton Mountain in Vermont, where the U.S. Open took place for so long," said Jake Burton, in a statement announcing the move. "Stratton not only hosted the Open for 27 years, but also played a pivotal role in making resort riding a reality. Vail is an incredible mountain and has been my snowboarding home-away-from-home for over twenty years. I have no doubt that the U.S. Open at Vail will only grow in its legacy as the premier rider-driven event in the world."

The U.S. Open is almost as old as snowboarding itself. In its heyday, the event was less of a contest and more of an annual gathering of the tribes, and as such, it drew and created many of snowboarding's biggest names. Because so many of snowboarding's legends claim U.S. Open titles, including Craig Kelly, Terje Haakonsen, Todd Richards, Danny Kass, Kelly Clark, Shaun White, Kazu Kokubo, Torah Bright, and more, to win a halfpipe event there is to go down in the annals of the sport's history.

"I grew up nine miles from where the Open was held," said Clark, a 29-year-old native Vermonter, two-time Olympic medalist and nine-time Winter X medalist, who cut her teeth as a pre-teen at the U.S. Open. "I went as a kid to see Terje and all these big-name pros ride, and it was really inspiring to be able to experience that as a spectator. But I'm optimistic and excited about the future. It will take on a new identity in Vail and will look different than it ever has, but it still will remain one of the pinnacle events in snowboarding that embraces the core of the sport."

While the break in tradition is a clear heralding of the end of an era in snowboarding, what the contest potentially gains with the move is significant. With conditions ranging from fog to sub-zero temperatures to sleet and ice storms, weather has tormented competitors at Stratton for years. And while Vermont once was the epicenter of snowboard culture, and the U.S. Open the crown jewel of contests, the globalization of the sport and the addition of major events around the world have contributed to a packed competition calendar. Traveling to the Open's remote location has become less of a pilgrimage and more difficult for today's competitors and spectators to pull off.

Vail, meanwhile, is a two-hour drive from Denver and its international airport, and is located in an area of the Rocky Mountains that has a high concentration of snowboarders and skiers. The potential pool of spectators to draw from is huge, as is the effort that Vail is putting into keeping them entertained once they get there. Along with a festival area at the base of the venue, Vail is hosting a series of free outdoor concerts, among other things.

Burton representatives remain steadfastly tight-lipped about the company's reasons for leaving Stratton, other than to say that Burton is committed to "progression", and the move is in line with that philosophy.

Progression is a word snowboarders use like Hawaiians use the term "da kine". It can mean anything, and nothing, depending on the context. Looking at the run that the slopestyle event is to be held on, however, it appears that progression in this case refers to the course itself.

Future Olympic slopestyle gold super-contender Mark McMorris said: "It's on a perfect run. If you look back to the Honda Vail Sessions that used to be here, they were the biggest jump contests in snowboarding. It's where all the new tricks happened. [The first 1260s in a contest were landed there by David Benedek and Chas Guldemond in 2007.] This is the same idea. It's on the same face of the mountain where the Sessions were held, and will have huge jumps, and history will for sure be made."

Vail Resorts recently invested in an extensive upgrade of its snowmaking system, installing 27 automated snowmaking machines on Golden Peak. The investment has turned the area into a training center, attracting athletes like alpine ski racers Lindsey Vonn and Bode Miller to the resort to run laps in the early season. This is significant, in that downhill racers need steep-graded runs – the same type of steep grade that slopestyle course designers need to be able to build the kind of big jumps with long, steep landings that the new generation of slopestyle competitors have been begging for for the past two years.

"I know it sucks that it's leaving Vermont because it's been there forever," McMorris said. "I made my first pro podium at the Open. I have great memories from it, for sure. But Vail is so nice, and it's going to be so great to make new memories here. In the end, it's still the U.S. Open, that's not changing it's just going to be in a different place."

It takes three days to pack a week's worth of food and gear onto snowmachines, which they then ride 180 kilometers north. What they anticipated to be a relatively manageable commute to camp turns into a 30-hour ordeal as multiple sleds get stuck in the melting ice. But the terrain Jeremy discovers makes the trip worth it.

Further Unplugged takes you behind the scenes of Jeremy Jones' two-year snowboarding film, Further. Get an inside glimpse of what goes on between the lines as Jones and other top riders including Terje Haakonsen, Xavier De Le Rue and Josh Dirksen travel to exotic locations such as Japan, the Arctic Circle and the Wrangell-St. Elias Wilderness. Challenges arise around every corner as this crew attempts to push their minds and bodies further.
