Dropping In: 6 Questions With Dropping In: 6 Questions With Steve Jones On The Co-Lab
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
Teton Gravity Research has been organizing The Co-Lab $100,000 freeskiing video project for years. Since announcing the contest to the public last May, there have been many questions as to how it will work.
We sat down with TGR co-founder Steve Jones to talk about The Co-Lab.
1) There is a lot of talk about The Co-Lab $100,000 freeskiing video contest. When the day comes to unveil the videos to the world, what do you hope to see?
Steve Jones: I have been hearing lots of background talk from undiscovered skiers, to pros working on segments. I think this thing could go any number of ways. Some guys are working on all park style skiing, some guys on more urban-centric edits, and some guys on more of a freeride type of a vibe. With the way people have evolved their skiing, I think we will see a lot of diverse edits that include lots of different styles of skiing. In terms of participants, from what I am hearing about on the street, this $100,000 could go to anyone.
2) What do you think will make a successful edit for The Co-Lab?
Steve Jones: I think some people think they need helicopters and all kinds of hi-tech camera equipment to win. That is not the case. I think it will come down to the most innovative riding combined with the most innovative editing. Creativity, aggressiveness, style, resourcefulness will all play a big part.
Another cool thing is that if you don't win the grand prize we are going to be announcing some sub-category awards as well. We are still defining those but things like, “Best foot-powered edit,” “Best Trick,” “Rowdiest Line,” “Most Innovative/Creative” are some of the ideas being thrown around. These are not final yet, but you get the idea. We are hoping to have a much smaller cash component to award for these sub-categories. Again, still in the works but hopefully can release some sub-categories soon.
3) If the edits are voted on by the people, how will the voting work? How will you prevent shenanigans?
Steve Jones: The people are only allowed to vote in the top 18 segments. Then there are three wildcards chosen by an outside panel of industry experts. Once the public has voted and the final 21 segments are locked, voting is closed to only those final 21 athletes to decide the ultimate winner.
4) What do you hope the final video for The Co-Lab to be?
Steve Jones: The final compilation film will be made up of the top 12 segments. From what I am hearing in the rumor mill and knowing some of the contestants, the final compilation will be a mix of undiscovered rippers and a variety of some of the industry's top pros. It's kind of cool because we expect to see guys from different film companies, competition backgrounds, local heroes, etc. mixed together into one final movie of their own personal edits. This is anyone's chance and it should be a colorful group of people. I think we are going to see some major surprises.
5) Will there be a movie tour for The Co-Lab movie?
Steve Jones: The Co-Lab will be distributed via iTunes and various other distribution platforms. We don't own the footage but we do retain the rights to distribute. There will be a ton of exposure for the people in this movie. We are considering showing CoLab at some of our bigger movie tour stops, as a lead in to our annual film. At very least we will be showing the winner's segment at all of the film tour venues as a preview. We will also distribute to film festivals and probably some TV coverage as well.
6) Do you guys really have $100,000?
Steve Jones: Yes we do, and somebody is going to be very happy.
--------
So, are you in? We want to hear your Co-Lab story. Send us an email to CoLab@tetongravity.com for a chance to be featured on this site.

Resort Review: Mt. Baker, Wash Resort Review: Mt. Baker, Washington Home To The Legendary Banked Slalom Snowboard Race
- From: mikehardaker
-
Description:
The Mt. Baker Ski Area is a tiny ski resort located in the USA near Canada, known for having the most snow in North America averaging an impressive 641 inches of snow annually. The resort even broke the record for total snowfall during the 98-99 season with a whopping 1,140 inches of snow. Located within the Mt. Baker-Snowqualmie National Forrest the Mt. Baker Ski Area was created in 1940 as a recreational destination for Washington residents. Fast forward almost 75 years and the terrain and base area still look almost exactly the same. You won’t find any real estate for sale or overpriced ski shops here.
The nearest lodging to the ski resort is located 30 miles down the road in the town of Glacier, Washington where to the locals the lack of internet and cell service is a welcome relief. For travelers you truly have to adapt while stepping back in time. If your sole focus is riding powder and ripping it fall line you’d be hard pressed to find better terrain in North America. Short vertical runs average around 1,000 feet with access to some of the rowdiest terrain around, combined with a lack of crowds and non–existent lift lines and you have the breeding grounds for some of the best riders in the world to test their skills. Its no wonder people like Carter Turk, Craig Kelly, Jamie Lynn, Jeff Fulton, George St. James, Tex Davenport, Mike Ranquet, Lucas DeBari, Forrest Burki, and every other ripper in the snowboard industry has called this mountain home.
Baker’s roots in snowboarding go way back, this was the first resort in the United States to truly embrace snowboarding and has been home to the Legendary Baked Slalom snowboard race, the longest running snowboarding competition in the world for the last 27 years. The resort is family run and operated which is extremely rare these days, maybe that’s why parking is free and lift tickets are only $50 a day.
If you like to hike, or just access life changing terrain it happens quick at Baker. The resort’s backcountry policy allows for skiers and riders to duck ropes if the following conditions are met, you must have a partner, avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe and backpack along with an understanding of the terrain. Ropes here are meant to be ducked, just not the ones with 2 sets of ropes as those lines lead to un-survivable cliffs, which are numerous within the resorts boundaries. If you’re smart and a strong rider you can shred some of the best lift accessed terrain in North America, if you blow it you may end up seriously hurt or even worse.
Each year 100 lucky snowboarders are chosen by lottery to compete in the Legendary Banked Slalom (LBS) snowboard race. Getting a spot is truly an honor especially when you’re an unknown rider like myself. Looking at the start list for this years race names like Travis Rice, Terje Haakonsen, Temple Cummins and Blair Habenicht certainly stand out!
The LBS course is dug by hand each year in a natural half pipe with banked slalom gates running from top to bottom. The start shack is legendary in itself with the words “stay low, say your prayers” painted across the entrance, good advise indeed. Unlike other snowboard contest the vibe at the Mt. Baker Legendary Banked Slalom is all about having fun, maybe it’s due to the fact there is no prize money to win, instead the best snowboarders in the world hurl themselves down an icy course for the chance to win a roll of duct tape and a Carhartt jacket.
Snowboarders from all over the world come to the event annually driving up the Mt. Baker Highway to see old friends, rip powder in an effort to cement their names in the history books. Just being selected to race is an honor in itself. The LBS is regarded as the predecessor to boardercross races.
The LBS takes place over 3 days giving each rider 2 days to qualify for a shot to ride in the finals. Plenty of high fives, hoots and hollers will follow each run, as the course is lined by locals, media, competitors and visiting riders all looking to see fast and flawless runs.
Wondering what the secret is to win, so am I. To win a roll of duct tape your wax must be dialed for the Northwest snow that tends to be warmer than most places in the country. Sharp edges seem to help too especially when 100 riders slide down the same line creating an extremely fast course. Racers times tend to get faster as the day progresses.
Guys like Blair Habenicht, Terje Haakonsen and Temple Cummins seem un-phased by the icy conditions each year. However this year just may be a bit different as the resort is calling for between 2-4 feet of snow the week leading up to the start of the race.
Stay tuned for TGR’s updates throughout the week from the 2013 Legendary Banked Slalom race at Mt. Baker! - Blog post

Every Third Thursday is about ideas, about engineering, about the beauty of manufacturing and always pushing the boundaries. So what happens when Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew come up with an idea that has nothing to do with any of those meaningful aspects? They run with it! This month's factory challenge is to build a snowboard integrating pennies — pennies in the base and “penny traction” edges specifically. Jake Olson-Elm is the chosen one to ride what might just be the worst ETT ideas ever. Priceless! Hit play now to watch some noncents go down! Rachael Burks Is Forming A Wol Rachael Burks Is Forming A Wolfpack
- From: brigidmander
-
Description:
For the last two years pro skier Rachael Burks, one of free skiing’s most visible female personalities, has been laying relatively low. Burks has not been resting, however, instead she has been busy creating a new action sports website, femalewolfpack.com.
The website will feature video content of female action sports athletes, ranging from dirt-biking, surfing, slack-lining, to BASE and mountaineering. The goal, according to an announcement from the website, is to “specifically increase female visibility in action sports.”
A soft launch, which will have about ten videos on it, will be followed by an official launch on January 1, 2013, and a video of the week moving forward.
Burks’ ability to out-ski, and out-party, and out-backflip many men in the industry has earned her magazine appearances, profiles, and film segments ranging from Warren Miller Films, TGR, and the Levitation Project, and Powder Magazine reader’s polls, among others.
Burks says she decided to create the website after recognizing that to gain recognition in action sports is tough, but it is often even tougher for females.
“I got to a point in my ski career where it felt like my progress depended on how much money I could get together, which didn’t make sense to me. So I decided to give women a platform where they can get visibility without being reliant on financial alliances,” Burks said.
“In action sports, it is difficult to have progression for anyone. Hopefully this will give girls from all over the world an opportunity to showcase their skills, maybe pick up a sponsor, and pursue being a pro athlete,” she said.
One of the website’s goals is to collect female content in one easy-to-find viewing location. Burks also hopes that a consolidated arena where female athletes are showcased pushing the limits will influence women’s action sports as a whole.
“The best way is to lead by example. Sometimes all it takes is one person showing everyone else what is possible,” she said. “The idea is to let women be inspired once they are able to see what other women are doing, what is possible, and to up the ante.”
The target audience of the site is everyone ranging for sponsors looking for new talent, to people sitting at a desk looking for a cool way to kill some time.
“I don’t want this to be only for women, either. I think guys are interested in what the girls are doing, too,” Burks said.
Burks will personally select the videos chosen to go up on the site. Edits sent for submission can be new or existing video, pro or amateur, and should be sent to femalewolfpack@gmail.com for the rest of the month. After the January launch, videos submitted for consideration can be uploaded directly to the site. According to Burks, there will be no commentary, no editorials, no thumbs up or thumbs down, just visual content.
Athletes are already getting on board with the project.
“I think it is awesome! It’ll be a cool place to express ourselves, have fun, and put up rad content,” said Nat Segal, a Jackson Hole-based pro skier and competitor on the Freeride World Tour. “It’s going to give up and comers a place to showcase their abilities and get exposure, which sometimes girls really have to fight for. And it will give younger girls a place to see what other women are doing. I’m stoked. I already sent her some edits.”

News: Amplid Ambush Acedemy Of News: Amplid Ambush Acedemy Offers New Way To Become Sponsored
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Amplid has launched a completely new concept in athlete sponsorship, the Amplid Ambush Academy. Amplid has teamed-up with GoPro in a search for 20 talented, unsigned snowboarders and 20 ripping skiers who are hungry for an opportunity to prove themselves to a potential sponsor. Over the course of a season, they will compete in riding, filming and photo challenges that reflect the expectations on pro riders in the industry today.
“It’s crazy how being a pro rider has changed in only a few years. Building a career five years ago meant begging to get on magazine trips or praying that sponsors could afford to pay for a spot on next season’s big movie. Now it’s all about filming and editing your own movies and using social media to promote yourself. Amplid needs team riders with this complete skills package and the Amplid Ambush Academy is about finding them.” Says Amplid co-founder Peter Bauer.
At the start of every month throughout the season, a member of Amplid’s International Cartel Team will set the 20 chosen shredders their challenge; there will be five in total. In addition to awarding prizes to the winner of each challenge, at the end of the 2012/13 winter season, Amplid will offer the Academy members that have really impressed a place on the team.
Those applicants who make the cut and are accepted on to the Academy will receive a welcome pack with a GoPro Hero 2, the best way to capture that killer footage in crisp HD; a soft goods pack and a huge Proform discount on Amplid gear.
Riders that think they have what it takes to be a part of the Amplid Ambush Academy can access more information and apply at www.amplid.com. - Blog post

News: Team Americas Wins 2012 News: Team Americas Wins 2012 Swatch Skiers Cup
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
With a final score of 10 - 9, Team Americas takes the SWATCH SKIERS CUP trophy from defending champions Team Europe. More exciting news also comes out of the day, as organizers proudly announce a 3rd edition of the event to be held in Zermatt, Switzerland for February 2013.
Valle Nevado, September 7, 2012 - Due to unsafe snow conditions on today's intended Backcountry Slopestyle course, athletes and organizers took a last minute decision to change plans and hold a tiebreak-style match with only three riders from each team on a higher venue with better snow conditions. After the uncertainty and suspense of the final day, and due to amazing performances from its chosen riders, Team Americas emerged victorious, winning the 2nd edition of the SWATCH SKIERS CUP.
Cody Townsend (USA) 1 – 0 Mathieu Imbert (FRA)
Chopo Diaz (CHILI) 0 – 1 Marcus Eder (ITA)
KC Deane (USA) 1 – 0 Paddy Graham (UK)
Changing the format of the event at the last minute was an extremely difficult decision for organizers and athletes alike. The variety of riding that both the Big Mountain and Backcountry Slopestyle heats offer is a trademark of the SWATCH SKIERS CUP, and everyone involved was wary of losing out on the freestyle component of this progressive event. However, thanks to the quick action of the organizers, and incredible riding by the athletes, the event was able to showcase cutting-edge riding in a high-mountain venue behind Valle Nevado ski area.
Each team had to choose only three riders to compete in the tie-break.
“I chose my guys based on a combination of their motivation and enthusiasm in the moment and their abilities as creative freestyle skiers, because what I want is to push the level of riding at the event. If we would have won today we would have won with style,” commented event co-founder and Team Europe captain Sverre Liliequist.
Event judge Mark Abma also had praise for the riding of Team Europe.
“Markus Eder's run was amazing, spinning 360s in both directions and incorporating a rodeo 540 and a rodeo 720, all off of the natural terrain found on this backup venue,” said Abma.
In the end, however, Team Europe couldn't stop the charge of Team Americas. With the score tied after the first two matches, it was up to KC Deane (USA) and Paddy Graham (UK). Paddy was building an impressive run, but took a hard impact on the landing of one of his airs, putting his knees to his chin, bringing his run to an end. Deane dropped in with a huge backflip at the top of the face and finished the run in impressive style, thus winning the tiebreaker and the SWATCH SKIERS CUP trophy for his team.
The conclusion of the second edition of the SWATCH SKIERS CUP is also a victory for the event itself. Organizers are proud to announce today that the next edition of the SWATCH SKIERS CUP will be held in Zermatt, Switzerland in front of the legendary Matterhorn from the 9th through the 16th of Februrary, 2013.
The event born in the minds of Sverre Liliequist and Kaj Zackrisson is here to stay. Swatch Proteam member Kaj Zackrisson comments: “This is a dream come true! Lake Wanaka, New Zealand – Skier Jacqui Edgerly, from the USA, and Snowboarder Will Jackways, from New Zealand, took center stage at the World Heli Challenge ION Showcase Awards on August 16. They were named the X Factor Awardees for World Heli Challenge 2012, as another successful World Heli Challenge came to an end. In a first for the World Heli Challenge, skiers and snowboarders competed together for the top spots with only one male and one female taking the honors.Jacqui and Will were chosen based on their overall aggressive performance and not necessarily on points earned during the competition.
“Jaqui took the prize for her determination and amazing line choice, and pushing her limits,” said head ski judge Dion Newport. "Showing why she was invited to the World Heli Challenge by skiing a line on the extreme day that had a lot of exposure and risk. Not landing her run put her back in second position but her amazing show for the cameras and viewers earned her the XFactor Award.”
“Will stood out during both days of competition,” said head snowboard judge, Mike Hygemann. “He had an amazing first run in the freestyle day where he showed great control and use of terrain pulling off 360 spins, a tail grab air, a method air and an indy…an excellent run from the kiwi. The extreme day saw him taking a very challenging line which he executed with aggression and style.”
Narrowly missing the top spots were snowboarder Abby Lockhart, New Zealand, and skiers Natalie Segal from Australia and Markus Eder from Italy.

Event organizers continued with the innovative online judging format, drawing on the experience of internationally regarded judges from around the world to review each run and analyze in detail when deciding this year's winners.
Dion Newport and Mike Hygemann were the onsite ski and snowboard judges and were able to consult with the “virtual” judges about the days' conditions and any other specifics that may not have been discerned from the videos.
In addition to competitor awards for best performances on the snow, the best images and cinematography captured throughout the two-week event in the Canon Shootout were also screened and announced to the packed Wanaka Centre audience and to a global audience via live webcast.

The audience was treated to five mind-blowing five-minute mini documentaries. It wasn’t an easy decision for the judges as each film captured the spirit of the two-weeks of heli-accessed skiing and snowboarding and all of the off-snow adventures from a different perspective.
“Each and every film transported the audience inside the unique experience that is the World Heli Challenge,” said event founder Tony Harrington.

Stevens Pass Mountain Resort F Stevens Pass Mountain Resort First In WA To Win National Environmental Award
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
In its 18 year history, the ski industry’s most prestigious award has never been won by a Washington resort.
Leavenworth, WA – The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) honored Stevens Pass Mountain Resort with the 2012 Golden Eagle Award for Environmental Excellence. Stevens Pass took top environmental honors in the mid-sized resort category (200,000 to 500,000 skier visits) for its energy conservation and greenhouse gas (GHG)reduction efforts. An Oregon resort won the award in 1994 and is the only other PNW winner.
“Our company-wide focus on sustainability includes many progressive programs, and we are especially pleased to receive this national acknowledgement,” said Ross Freeman, Environment & Sustainability Manager for Stevens Pass.
Energy conservation programs at Stevens Pass include simple measures such as upgraded lighting, occupancy sensors, timers, and improved operational protocols, as well as more complex projects such as a comprehensive third-party energy audit, building equipment retrofits, and solar power installations.
Greenhouse gas reduction efforts include extensive food waste compost programs, tracking of fuel consumption for all vehicles and snow machinery, no-idling policies, the purchase of cleaner engines (e.g. 4-stroke snowmobiles; low-emissions snowcats and front loaders), electric vehicles, and investment in employee transit. Last year the resort completed the installation of two public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, the nation’s first to be located in a mountain pass environment, and at the time the only units located at any ski resort.
Many other environmental projects are also underway, such as on-slope recycling, preferential purchasing of local food ingredients, and active surplus property/re-use procedures.
“We are always looking for ways to reduce our impacts, save money through efficiency, and do the right thing for the mountain environment for years to come,” said Freeman.
In addition to all its onsite GHG programs, for the past five years Stevens Pass has also chosen to offset a full 100 percent of its electricity and propane consumption through renewable energy credits and carbon offsets from non-polluting windpower. By making this investment to support clean energy for everyone, the resort has funded 21,289,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of windpower, and prevented the emission of 16,182 tons of CO2, or the equivalent of taking 2,878 cars off the road for a year.
Stevens Pass believes it has a responsibility to the environment and is one of the few resorts nationwide with full time environmental staff.
“We know that combating global warming is critical for the future of our entire industry, and we seek to lead resorts across the PNW by example,” said Freeman.
The NSAA’s Golden Eagle award comes on the heels of another notable award from the Washington State Recycling Association, which recently named Stevens Pass as Recycler of the Year – a category won last year by the Seattle Mariners baseball team.
Last December, Stevens Pass was thrilled to receive a national top ten ranking, and the highest score in the PNW, from the Ski Area Citizens’ Coalition annual Report Card, which uses public records and extensive surveys to rank the environmental practices of Western ski resorts. - Blog post
