    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

After returning home from his annual pilgrimage to AK, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa gave us a glimpse inside Fantasy Camp. Located deep within the Neacola Mountains, Fantasy Camp served as TGR’s staging ground this spring. Whether nailing first descents or documenting them, the TGR crew kept busy filming for Way of Life. As we gear up for the film’s release, we’ll be filling you in on what went down in Alaska.

Words and Images by Sage Cattabriga-Alosa

      TGR Fantasy Camp

Todd Ligar and Ian Mac look down on a nice little spine wall we dubbed NHL. The wall earned this name because lurking just under a thin dust of snow was a solid sheet of ice that stretched from wall to wall. It made for some exciting attempts at hanging on—and some hockey stops.

      Fantasy Camp

Ariel views like this allow for quickly spotting multiple zones. I often go back through my photos, looking for areas where lines and zones might have been hiding on the first look.

      Fantasy Camp

The Land of Ice—seeing glacial caps and massive glacial fields is quite a sight. It’s cool to see mountains being formed right before your eyes.

      Fantasy Camp

      The ol' Look down.

      Fantasy Camp

Ian Mac speeds out of a massive line in an icy world. The challenge on lines like this is dealing with an exit plan. Large bergshrunds littered the bottom of this wall and the snow was firm underneath the top layer. Needless to say, control—and a plan—was critical to getting out safely.

      Fantasy Camp

House-size chunks of ice and snow make up this peeling glacier.

      Fantasy Camp

This looks like a calm perch, but the area below is loaded with spince walls that branch out in almost all directions. Here, Ian enjoys a moment of calm before the storm.

      Fantasy Camp

Tim Durtschi launches into a 360 off this natural spine flank. This was his first film line of the trip, and he came out of the gate hot!

The glow of the sun reflects off the ocean in the distance.

      Fantasy Camp

Wind can be your enemy out in the alpine, turning glory pow into sastrugi moguls. Luckily, we found protected zones that held good snow through the end of our trip.

Doug Brewer, a bush pilot, was the key to our success at Fantasy Camp. He flew us, our gear, our camp supplies, and fuel out in many different flights. In this photo, he is headed home after taking us on a recon flight in his Bush Hawk.

      Fantasy Camp

GPS helps, but helicopters are fly-by-sight aircrafts.

      Fantasy Camp

This is how we measure our time out in the helicopter. It keeps track of the amount of hours that we are pulling power, and how long we can fly.

      Fantasy Camp

Sammy Carlson flies out of the bottom of a fun line.

      Fantasy Camp

The production team hard at work. Dutch Simpson shoots third angle, picking up the action, and reaction as we roll up to the group at the end of each run. And Tim D, who mostly shoots his Sony Action Cam helps out.

      Fantasy Camp

Dana Flahr lays some smooth tracks while killing time before our next set up.

      Fantasy Camp

A zone that got away... always tons of options out there. And it feels good to have goals for the future. It looks like you could have a bit of fun with this one.

      Tim Durtschi in Austria
      Words By Tim Durtschi
      Photos by Dutch Simpson

After our weeklong stay at the Bluebird Mountain Hostel and good times skiing in Hochfugen, Austria, it was off to Fieberbrunn.

Fieberbrunn is a powder paradise. It has five gondolas: more than any other type of lift at the resort. We took advantage of the easily accessible tree skiing during the heavy storm that hit the day of our arrival.

Our trusty guide Marcus informed us that we arrived to one of the biggest storms that they have seen all season, and the cold weather made for some blower pow. Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Dylan Hood, Colter Hinchliffe and myself made laps from open to close and there was still massive amounts of unskied terrain that made us anxious to get up in the morning and do it all over again.

When the pow stopped falling (we were starting to feel like it never would) our friend Matthias Haunholder took us to some really fun lines off the backside near the Wildseeloder Lodge. The Atomic team manager, Chris Mckearin, came over from the Atomic factory, which is a short 1.5-hour drive away, and got to ski with us for two days.

It was pretty cool to be able to ski with your team manager, especially during a film shoot. I mean, you definitely don’t want to crash in front of your team manager … actually he’s a pretty cool guy, so it’s no big deal.

This week in Fieberbrunn marks the end of our month long journey through the Tirol Valley of Austria. It has been awesome, good times the entire way through, we got to see a huge amount of terrain over the course of our migration, but there is still so much that we could experience. I will definitely be back in the Alps in the future, there is so much opportunity here, and with such welcoming people, it’s hard to say “no” when they say kommen sie bald wieder!

Les Arcs, France - Sam Favret, of Chamonix, won the fifth installment of Red Bull Linecatcher. American Parker White and Nicolas Vuignier, of Switzerland, took home second and third, respectively.

The 2013 edition of the Red Bull Linecatcher featured a high level of competition on the White Circus face, in the Savoyard resort of Les Arcs, France. As expected, the day had clear skies, little wind and very cold temperatures, allowing the snowpack to retain its lightness. On this beautiful face covered with powder, 20 skiers decided to do what they do best: go huge in the backcountry.

A native of Chamonix, Sam Favret, impressed the judges with breathtaking descents. In his last run, Favret skillfully combined the techniques of freestyle, freeride commitment, and creative line choice, convincing the jury he was the No. 1 skier of the day.

After a switch cork 540 on the right side and a left cork 720 off two kickers on the top of the face, Favret skied with aggression and fluidity in the second part of his line, embellishing his descent from a 360 on a natural air before drawing in large turns toward the finish line.

“Happiness! What a day! There were really great [jumps] on this contest,” Favret said. “I have overcome the pressure and ski relaxed and it allowed me free rein and [to ski] my best. This is awesome. ... This result bodes well for the rest of the season.”

Parker White, a 21-year-old American ski prodigy and the youngest skier in the race, climbed to the second step of the podium. He won the heart of the jury by making two very technical airs perfectly on his first run, throwing a 720 and a butter cork 720.

“Today was a magical day,” said White, of Vermont. “I did not expect at all to finish second and I'm really, really happy.”

Nicolas Vuignier, of Switzerland, who is the only one of the three winners to have already participated in the Red Bull Linecacher, completed the podium. It was during the 2011 edition that Nicolas had crossed the qualifiers but could not confirm at the final stages. This year, is his last run, he seized his chance. He chose a strange line, beginning his descent with a 360 on natural terrain before two kickers: a cork 7 and 360, all at full speed and flawless.

“Everyone has skied so well that it must have been really difficult for the judges. I am very pleasantly surprised and super happy,” Vuignier said while leaving the podium.

Finally, the special prize of “Best Natural Trick” (best is on natural terrain) was awarded to Léo Taillefer of Val d'Isère for his superb skiing and a 360 over a bump in the natural entrance of his run.

This fifth edition of the Red Bull Linecatcher has been a great success and resulted in a very diverse showcase of freeskiing.

      The final standings:

Tim Durtschi & Chris Benchetler present the new Atomic Bent Chetler 2012-13. With a massive 123 mm waist width and two huge Powder Rockers in tip and tail, the result is a sensationally light surf feeling in powder. For the first time, Chris has added Atomic's new and exclusive Sprocket Power Boosters to the 2012/13 model: these lightweight carbon inserts in the binding area make jumps even easier thanks to increased pop and increase the agility of the ski on challenging runs. The sensational graphics have, of course, once again been penned by Chris himself.
