Description:
The Hume Hotel, established in 1898, is a landmark in downtown Nelson, British Columbia.
— Words and photos by Lindsey Ross
For a month this winter, I had the unique opportunity to photograph with Sweetgrass Productions in Nelson, B.C. The ski and snowboard film company was producing a movie there and rented a house in the area for the duration of the project. This home became the epicenter of the Sweetgrass community, serving as a temporary residence for the elite skiers and snowboarders who showed up to film. I arrived to find athletes, filmmakers, and photographers packed into a six-bedroom house, sleeping in closets, on living room floors, and under stairwells. At night we dined, stretched, hydrated, planned, edited and entertained one another with movies and acoustic music. During the days, we chased ephemeral light, immaculate snow and mystical terrain. Enraptured in these conditions, athletes went big and my 1970s-era Hasselblad camera served as a faithful witness to this.
Sweetgrass is known for their methodical, artistic approach to filmmaking, often drawing upon the culture and aesthetics of their film locations. This film is set up to be no different and is greatly informed and fueled by the town of Nelson. Nelson is a community, which embodies a distinctive and yet dualistic character. It seems to exist somewhere between many polarities: it is organic and electronic, homegrown and cosmic, genuine and effervescent, earthy and sublime. The community possesses the energy of youth but the reverence for heritage. The appropriate lens was necessary explore this mysterious locale.
These images are exposed on expired film, producing magenta photographs. The color magenta symbolizes creativity and flow of energy. It is an anomaly among colors because it has no assigned wavelength. So theoretically magenta does not exist. But the color itself does exist — it exists in two places at once, opposite ends of the visible spectrum at a higher frequency than violet and a lower frequency than red. Therefore, it is considered a sub spectral color because it only exists as a result of the combination of two or more wavelengths. Upon being discovered, magenta broke convention of scientific understanding of the visible spectrum.
It seemed appropriate to photograph with Sweetgrass in Nelson, a town defined by paradox with a hue also defined by paradox.

Description:
When you find a place that’s good, stay there. The ski dream tells you that traveling from snowy destination to winter wonderland is the guaranteed way to find powder. Yes, you may see the world of ski areas and communities. Just make sure you’re there long enough to enjoy a few storm cycles. Once you’re out of the pattern it becomes more and more effortless to miss this storm or that one. For the tiny house and crew, driving away from Whitewater before a 70-centimeter cycle was our pattern mistake.
We may have not skied the best day in five years at Whitewater, but we did meet all the folks who would once we left. One of those folks was local patroller, Orry Grant, otherwise known as OG. A blonde hair, blue-eyed, hiking-machine, and unassuming bad-ass, Mr. Grant is without a doubt skiing powder at this very moment, regardless of what moment you are reading this. As a patroller and member of the avalanche control crew for Kootenay Pass, the Nelson native breathes ski-lifer.
Orry Grant embodies Kootenay mountain culture being born in Nelson, living in Revelstoke for years, and knowing the nooks and crannies of the best ski zones in the Koots. Coincidentally, one of our first impressions of the OG was in Kootenay Mountain Culture, a beautifully designed magazine that pays homage to the people, places, and centimeters that make BC a skier’s heaven. The Kootenays are a blessed place. For people like Orry Grant, that place is home.
Choosing Orry was really just another gift for the tiny house crew. We missed the major, epic storm, but we got to feel like we were helping make things happen for the Whitewater local. With a recent G3 sponsorship and a spot on the ambassador program for OR, Orry’s life just became that much more entrenched in the world of skiing. And for that, the skiing community should feel grateful.
A smile goes a long way. Orry’s kind demeanor and smiles (plus his assistance as a patroller) will undoubtedly keep many people out there skiing. It will definitely bring us back to Whitewater. That and the hopes of hitting the storm we missed.

News: Benjamin Ogilvie, Lexi D News: Benjamin Ogilvie, Lexi Dupont Win Freeskiing World Tour Qualifier In Revelstoke
- From: media-75233

Description:

Revelstoke, BC – Revelstoke’s Separate Reality venue was host to Thursday’s Qualifier for the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour. With few spots up for grabs in today’s Day 1 of competition, skiers pushed the limits of big mountain freeskiing to earn their spot. Taking first out of 60 competitors in the Men’s field was Benjamin Ogilvie from Fernie, BC. In first for the Women is Snowbird local Lexi Dupont from a stacked roster of 23 ladies.
“In today’s qualifier, it was definitely clear that skiers needed to step up in every aspect of the criteria; they had to have great technique, control and fluidity,” notes Head Judge Jim Jack on the selective cut. Out of the deep qualifier field, 13 men and 4 women will advance to today's Day 1 competition on North Bowl’s Unlimited Assets. “It was a very competitive cut, so congratulations to the skiers that made it in,” said Jack.
On the women’s side, athletes skied very smart and safe and 99 percent of the competitors stayed on their feet. “Winner Lexi Dupont skied fast and fluid, with direct fall-line skiing,” remarked Announcer Max Kuszaj. “Its no surprise she is sitting in the top qualifying position going into Day 1.” Canadian Crystal-Rose Lee was a close second. For the men, the majority of the skiers made the best use of the terrain and the style/creativity category by adding newschool tricks into their run, which benefited their scores. “A standout for me would be Fernie BC’s own Luke Nelson with his fast, fluid technical skiing on the top of Separate Reality, and smooth 360 at the bottom, encompassing all aspects we encourage in a competitor’s run,” says Kuszaj.
Skiers on the mountain experienced a mix of sun and snow with great conditions and visibility of the venue. “Conditions for this event are definitely shaping up to be some of the best we’ve had here at Revelstoke. The consistency of the snow will make landings cleaner and provides athletes a venue to showcase their abilities. Day 1 of the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour starts today and will be broadcast live on www.freeskiingworldtour.com.

Event: Awakening The Skeena Ja Event: Awakening The Skeena Jackson Hole Premiere
- From: media-75233

Description:
A film about hope, human endurance and inspiration, Awakening the Skeena will screen at the Center For The Arts Theater on November 18, 2010. Silent auction and concessions begin at 6 PM. The film and Q&A with filmmakers will follow. Casey Sheahan, Patagonia CEO, will be opening the event. Auction items include one week of fishing for three anglers at the exclusive Islas Secas Resort (http://www.islassecas.com/) in Panama, guided fishing trips with John Simms, Carter Andrews and Boots Allen. Other auction items include a week of heli-skiing in BC with Skeena Heli-Skiing and the Bear Claw Lodge, three days of guided fishing in New Zealand, a week of steelhead fishing in BC with Sweetwater Travel, a Two Handed Rod from Scott Rod Company, round-trip Hawk Air and Stork Nest Motel packages in Smithers, BC, artwork by A.D. Maddox, halfday stand-up paddle or kayak lesson with Rendezvous River Sports, and many more.
Last summer, 34 year old Executive Chef Ali Howard swam the entire 610 km length of the Skeena River. She swam through Class IV whitewater, giant whirlpools and thick grizzly bear country as she made her journey to the Pacific Ocean. She started in an area known as the Sacred Headwaters, the birthplace of the Skeena, Stikine and Nass watersheds noted as the 'Serengeti of North America' by National Geographic, Explorer in Residence, Wade Davis. These three rivers are also home to three of British Columbia's greatest wild salmon and steelhead populations and a mecca for whitewater and backcountry enthusiasts.
Howard felt compelled to complete this incredible feat of human endurance to unite communities along the way and celebrate the Skeena Watershed while raising awareness about current industrial threats. The Sacred Headwaters have been listed as British Columbia's most endangered river system because of Shell's coalbed methane proposal that would see 1,500-10,000 wells drilled in almost 1 million acres of wilderness adjacent to the Spatsizi Park. 1000's of kilometers of roads, pipelines, generators and compressor stations would turn this caribou calving ground into an industrial wasteland. This ill-proposed development inspired unity of the entire northwest corner of British Columbia in opposition to Shell's plan. The folk storm created by Howard and her swim team catalyzed a groundswell of support for the Sacred Headwaters and Skeena Watershed.
Awakening the Skeena demonstrates how a single person can unite several nations, communities and various levels of government towards a common vision. Filmmaker Andrew Eddy and his crew accompanied Howard and the swim team for the entire 26-day journey. The film showcases the incredible wilderness, culture and spirit of northwestern British Columbia and gives hope for the future. Howard earned a spot in the Top 10 Most Intriguing Environmentalists on the Planet (Mother Nature's Network) and Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia was inspired by Howard to create the Patagonia Activist Award (Howard was the first recipient).
