Description:

Copper Mountain, Colo. – Keri Herman’s (Breckenridge, CO) back-to-back switch tricks and clean landings sealed the deal for her second straight World Cup win at the Visa U.S. Freeskiing Grand Prix at Copper Mountain. Herman’s first run featured one of the best displays of grabs fans have seen in women’s slopestyle skiing. Her run included a lipslide first rail, bus stop to switch, switch right 720 safety-grab, switch right 540 Japan-grab, right 540 tail-grab. Great Britain’s James Woods took the men’s title.
Americans took four of the top eight spots including Bobby Brown (Breckenridge, CO) fourth, Nick Goepper (Lawrenceburg, IN) fifth, Alex Schlopy (Park City, UT) seventh and Sammy Carlson (Hood River, OR) eighth. American women took four of the top nine with Ashley Battersby (Park City, UT) sixth, Jamie Crane-Mauzy (Park City, UT) eighth and U.S.Freeskiing rookie Jess Breda (Marshfield, MA) ninth at just her second World Cup. The event also doubled as the U.S. Slopestyle Championship with Brown and Herman taking titles as top Americans. The athletes gained valuable FIS Olympic qualifying points in addition to AFP Platinum level points.
“I am so happy!” said Keri Herman. “At Dew Tour in December I finished dead last and this is great! It’s so cool to have won both FIS World Cup’s so far; it’s a real honor to represent the USA at the top of the podium. I tried so hard to grab well in my run and it worked out. The field of competition was tough and I am lucky the score from my first run held, because I fell on my second run. This is such a good confidence booster heading into X Games.”

News: Craig Kelly, Wayne Wong News: Craig Kelly, Wayne Wong And More To Join Ski And Snowboard Hall of Fame
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
Wayne Wong showing off his signature "Wong Banger."
ISHPEMING, MI - Freestyle skiing pioneer Wayne Wong and world champion freestyle moguls skier Jeremy Bloom lead an outstanding class of six inductees elected to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. Joining them will be Alpine World Championship medalist Kirsten Clark, world champion and snowboarding pioneer Craig Kelly, acclaimed international ski instructor and leader Horst Abraham and ski resort developer Hans Geier. U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame Chairman Bernie Weichsel made the announcement.
Wayne Wong is regarded by many as a living legend. He was the leading and most popular skier of his day when hotdog or freestyle skiing was emerging on the scene. The inventor of the famous “Wong Banger” and a star of countless skiing movies, Wong packaged his fame into being a true ambassador for skiing and continues to this day to convey his passion and enjoyment for the benefit of ski sports across the country. Both SKI and Powder magazines have named him among the most influential skiers in the 20th century.
Jeremy Bloom was also a star of freestyle skiing who won two World Cup titles and a World Championship and was one of America’s most visible skiing stars in the mid-2000’s. In 2003 he won gold in the dual moguls event at the World Championships and a silver in the individual moguls. Two years later he won his third World Championship medal as well as earning the moguls and overall World Cup titles. His six straight wins in World Cup competition set a record that stood for seven years. Bloom was also a football star at the University of Colorado and played for two years for the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers.
Kirsten Clark started racing at the age of seven, developing her skiing skills at Maine’s Sugarloaf Mountain. During her 13 year career on the U.S. Ski Team she won 12 U.S. titles and reached the World Cup podium eight times. In 2003 she won a World Championship silver medal in the super G. From 1998 to 2002 she strung together five straight U.S. downhill titles. A three time Olympian, Clark was respected for her quiet leadership and the high standards she set preparing for competition. Lindsey Vonn said of her, “Clarkie was always someone I looked up to.”
Craig Kelly is the third snowboarding honoree to be elected to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. A winner of four world titles in the early days of the sport, Kelly was one of its most influential pioneers working with Jake Burton Carpenter to open countless ski areas to the sport in the 1980s. He also played a key role during the early years of Burton Snowboards. The holder of an honors degree in chemical engineering, he starred in numerous skiing and snowboarding films over 20 years. The first true professional snowboarder, he was awarded TransWorld Snowboarding’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. He died a year later in an avalanche while seeking to become the first fully certified Canadian Mountain Guide as a snowboarder.
Horst Abraham is an Austrian native who rewrote the script for American ski instruction that had a significant impact internationally. Through his work America’s ski instructors emerged as world leaders in their field. Starting with the Aspen Ski School and later the technical director for the Vail Ski School, he eventually became the education vice president for the Professional Ski Instructors of America. As the developer of what became known as the American Teaching Method in 1980, focusing on teaching skiing skills instead of skiing turns, he led the U.S. to become the world leader in snow sports education.
Hans Geier was a leading manager and developer of ski areas across the United States for nearly 30 years. From the time he completed Pennsylvania’s Ski Round Top in 1971 until his retirement in 1998, he had a large impact on the growth of the sport. Most notably he was the general manager of Steamboat Springs resort in Colorado from 1981 to 1990 when he led it through a $43 million expansion, growing annual skier visits from 360,000 to over a million and putting the resort’s finances in the black. In 1994 he was hired as president of Doppelmayr Corporation for North America, a position he held until his retirement in 1998. He also served on numerous ski association boards including the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) and chairman of Colorado Ski Country. In 1988 the NSAA presented to him its Lifetime Achievement Award.
The induction of the Class of 2012 will take place at the Marriott Vail Resort in Vail, CO on April 13, 2013 as the concluding event for Skiing Heritage Week celebrating Vail’s 50th anniversary.
The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame provides highly respected perpetual national recognition to athletes competing in skiing and snowboarding and of the builders of these sports who have made the highest level of national and/or international achievement and contribution to American skiing and snowboarding. It is located in Ishpeming, MI, the birthplace of organized skiing in America, where it also serves as the headquarters for the International Skiing History Association. - Blog post

News: Skiing And Snowboarding News: Skiing And Snowboarding See Unified World Tour For 2013, Dates Announced
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Lausanne, Switzerland / Salt Lake City, USA – Event organizers of Swatch Freeride World Tour, Freeskiing World Tour, and The North Face Masters of Snowboarding announced this week a merger that will combine all three tours under one unified, global, five-star championship series. The new six-stop world tour, named the Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face, will include freeride skiing and snowboarding at each stop.
Confirmed tour locations include Revelstoke, Canada, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France, Kirkwood, USA, Fieberbrunn Pillerseetal, Austria, and one more stop still to be confirmed, before the World Tour finals in Verbier, Switzerland.
"The union of the three tours is a major step in the sports' growth," said Nicolas Hale-Woods, Freeride World Tour Managing Director Europe. "Not only at the Freeride World Tour level, but also at the qualifying level, with events happening in New Zealand, North and South America, and Europe, all counting toward one unique Freeride World Qualifier ranking, enabling riders from all active areas to qualify for the next season's Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face."
"Big mountain freeriding has a long and rich history with incredibly talented athletes around the world," said Adam Comey, Mountain Sports International President and Freeride World Tour Managing Director Americas. "Now, with two great brands in Swatch and The North Face, and two dedicated organizations in Europe and North America coming together for one mission and one tour, the next chapter of freeride skiing and snowboarding is very bright."
For 2013, start lists will feature qualified athletes from all three of the 2012 tours, as well as from qualifier events (four-star events), along with a limited number of wild card entries from both continents.
"The merger of the two ski tours is a great step for our sport," said 2012 Swatch Freeride World Tour Champion Reine Barkered of Sweden. "It will add even more recognition around the world. For me, as a rider, I'm looking forward to an even more exciting season with a lot of new faces."
American skier Drew Tabke, a long-time competitor and podium leader on both tours, agrees: "Beyond the details of judging, rankings, and format, I'm most excited to see the two tours' top riders compete against one another. The best event last year was the combined event at Revelstoke. This event represented the ideal outcome of this merger of the two tours: A legitimate representation of the world's best riders competing at a world-class venue."
American snowboarder Ralph Backstrom, a title contender on both tours, says, "I couldn't be more stoked to hear that the The North Face Masters and FWT will be combined for next season. I look forward to seeing some more North Americans at the European stops, some more Euros in North America, and an increased talent pool."
In addition to the five-star Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face, there will be around 40 qualifier events (FWQ) around the world, ranging from one to four-stars, for up-and-coming athletes to earn a spot on the next year's FWT. First stops of the four-star FWQ will be in New Zealand and in Chile in August 2012. Riders will score points in two separate rankings, a five-star FWT ranking and a one to four-star FWQ ranking.
The North Face, a long-time supporter of big mountain skiing and snowboarding, the Freeskiing World Tour, and founder of The North Face Masters of Snowboarding, has joined on as presenting sponsor to the new, merged Freeride World Tour.
"The North Face is excited to be a partner in this next generation of freeride competition. Athletes like Ingrid Backstrom and Dana Flahr were able to foster and showcase their talents in this competitive forum and we're looking forward to the expansion of this arena across multiple sports," said Aaron Carpenter, Vice President of Marketing at The North Face. "We take pride in the role our pioneering athletes and innovative products have in both the history and future of action sports. This collaboration signifies our commitment to the continual evolution of freeriding and its athletes."
"It is a great pride to welcome The North Face as presenting partner of Swatch Freeride World Tour. The fit between the two brands is just perfect," said Nicolas Hale-Woods, Freeride World Tour Managing Director Europe.
Along with the addition of The North Face for 2013, long time partner of Freeride World Tour, Swatch is back as title sponsor for the second year, making it possible for a tour of this size to continue to thrive and evolve.
"As a long-term supporter of freeride skiing and snowboarding we're very happy to see the merger of the top European and North American events into the Swatch Freeride World Tour by the North Face. There's nothing more exciting and inspiring than to see top athletes performing at their best, and the six big-mountain venues on the new world tour are spectacular sites for all-out competition at the highest level. We can't wait! [for the season to start]" said Marco Vaccari, Head of Marketing International Swatch Ltd.

News: Grandfather Of Snowboard News: Grandfather Of Snowboarding Sherman Poppen Honored With Snurfer Sculpture
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Muskegon, MI – Join the Community Foundation for Muskegon County on Thursday, June 7 at 5:00 p.m. for a dedication ceremony honoring Sherman “Sherm” Poppen at the unveiling of the “Snurfer Sculpture” at 477 West Western, across the street from the L.C. Walker Arena.
A Muskegon native, Mr. Poppen is being honored for inventing the Snurfer, a way to surf on the snow, and his entrepreneurial success. Speakers at these events will include Cindy Larsen, president of the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce, Muskegon Mayor Steve Warmington, sculpture artist Jason Dreweck, and Poppen.
Following the dedication, the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce will host a reception at the Holiday Inn Muskegon Harbor, to celebrate Poppen’s induction into the Muskegon Business Hall of Fame.
Also included will be a showcasing of the limited edition snowboard bronze sculpture “The Turning Point” by sculpture artist Jason Dreweck, and a “Celebration of Business” reception following the dedication at the Holiday Inn Muskegon Harbor. The celebration will feature live music and an original cocktail, the “Snurfer-tini.”
"The Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber Hall of Fame recognizes business excellence, innovation, and inventions that have made lasting contributions to industry and community,” said Cindy Larsen. “Clearly Mr. Poppen’s invention changed the course of history in winter sports. This recognition is long overdue. It is our hope that the sculpture and the award and will inspire others to see Muskegon, Michigan’s role in winter sports development and see the Muskegon Lakeshore as a winter tourism destination.”
The Snurfer was invented on Christmas Day in 1965, when Poppen’s pregnant wife, Nancy, wanted their two daughters, Wendy and Laurie, to play outside so she could get some rest. When the girls were disappointed they couldn’t safely stand up in their sled to go down the snow-covered dunes in their backyard, Poppen fastened together a pair of kid’s skis, and after some tweaking, invented Muskegon’s most famous toy, the Snurfer. The term “Snurfer” was coined by Mrs. Poppen combining the words “surf” and “snow.”
In 1968, Muskegon became home to the annual World Snurfing Classic, which was sponsored by Muskegon Community College. The first classic showcased men’s and women’s downhill events and a men’s slalom event. Ted Slater and Sally Waite were the first Snurfing champions and both received a Brunswick trophy presented by Poppen. The annual event, renamed the National Snurfing Championship in later years, continued for 12 years, and was moved to an area ski lodge in 1980 due to growing popularity and participation.
Poppen licensed the board that fueled the development of the snowboard as a piece of sporting equipment to Brunswick in 1966. The company sold 1 million Snurfers between 1966 and 1973 before discontinuing production. JEM Corporate produced and marketed the board from 1973 until the early 1980s.
Poppen’s success has been recognized through his inductions into the Snowboarding Hall of Fame in 1995 in Banff, Alberta, Canada and the Muskegon Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. Three original Snurfers and scans of the original paperwork for his invention were showcased at The Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention & Innovation, part of the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. He was also featured on an episode of the Discovery Channel’s “Inventions” program for his Snurfer.
Also, Mr. Poppen was hailed as the founder of snowboarding when it became an Olympic sport 33 years after its invention.
Interestingly, Sherman Poppen took up snowboarding at the age of 67.

This morning started out with bluebird skies and cold temperatures, keeping the snow conditions firm and fast on “Lookout Vista”.
The field of nine women and 42 men headed into the Qualifier with hopes to qualify into tomorrow’s main event-Day 1 of the World Freeskiing Championships. Judges had the difficult job of choosing three female and sixteen male freeskiers to advance to the 5-Star competition with the pre-qualified skiers.
“Lookout Vista is a perfect qualifier venue with lots of features,” noted Head Judge Eric Schmitz.” Everyone skied really well, making the cut for the finals really tough.”
Qualifying first for the ladies was Robin McElroy out of Squaw Valley with a winning score of 30.40. McElroy skied with confidence, earning points for her fluid skiing in the variable snow conditions. In second was Snowbird’s Hannah Follender with 29.00. Rounding out the top three and earning the final spot in tomorrow’s competition was Alex Riedman from Crested Butte with a 27.13.
Topping the talented men’s field was Blackcomb’s Laurent Gauthier with a high score of 35.60.
“Gauthier skied the looker’s left-hand side of the venue very fast and fluidly, building his line score with multiple airs, clearly setting himself in front of the pack,” said Announcer Max Kuszaj.
Second place went to Rob Gosiewski from Vail, scoring 35.17. Max Weintraub out of Squaw Valley scored 34.80 to place third in today’s Qualifier event.
The Kirkwood Qualifier marked the final 4 Star event of the 2012 season. Gauthier’s win today earned him enough points to be named the 4 Star Tour Champion of the 2012 season with 3250 points. The ladies 4 Star Overall Tour Champion is Alex Riedman from Crested Butte with 3540 points.
All of the action from Kirkwood will be streaming live on www.freeskiingworldtour.com for Day One and Day Two, starting at 10 am PST tomorrow. With sunny conditions forecasted all weekend, the final stop of the tour will be an impressive conclusion to the 2012 Freeskiing World Tour.

News: Tailgate Alaska Returns News: Tailgate Alaska Returns To Thompson Pass April 1-12
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
In less than a week, Flow Tailgate Alaska will take over Thompson Pass for the biggest freeride festival devoted to skiers and snowboarders. Voted by Transworld readers as the No. 1 snowboarding event in the world, Flow Tailgate Alaska brings recreationists, professional athletes, legends and the industry together in the ultimate winter playground from April 1-12, 2012.
For its fifth year, Flow Tailgate Alaska will bring together over 500 tailgaters for a two-week celebration in the Alaskan Chugach Mountains with educational opportunities, parties, competitions and entertainment for all. While most of North America had a weak winter season, the Chugach Mountains have been on track for a record setting season.
"This is probably a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ride this much snow in Alaska," event creator Mark Sullivan said.
The Alaska Avalanche Information Center will be offering daily classes on snow safety and avalanche awareness, glacier travel and crevasse rescue, and decision making in mountain terrain. The center also provides a daily avalanche bulletin for the Valdez/Thompson Pass area on their website www.alaskasnow.org.
"Valdez and Thompson Pass are seeing a banner snow year this season, with a 125-inch base and 639 inches of total snowfall thus far on the Pass, so there should be plenty of powder for Tailgaters visiting the area," AAIC Director Sean Wisner said. "We are proud to be part of such a great event with snow safety and education as its central theme. The AAIC staff encourages all mountain travelers to check the bulletin before venturing out each day, choose terrain that is appropriate for the conditions, and live to ride another day!"
Flow Tailgate Alaska serves as the host for skiing and snowboarding's original big mountain world championship events - The World Freeride Championships taking place from April 1-12, 2012 with a $10,000 payout to the winner.
The best part is, YOU are invited to come and participate. There are still a few tickets left for Flow Tailgate Alaska that include camping at basecamp, snow science classes, beer, bathrooms, discounts on RV, hotels, heli and a whole lot more. News: Kaylin Richardson, Silas News: Kaylin Richardson, Silas Chickering-Ayers Win FWT Snowbird Stop
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Salt Lake City, Utah — Saturday’s incoming storm held off just long enough to wrap up the North American Freeskiing Championships, stop number four of the 2012 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour (FWT) on Snowbird’s “North Baldy”. First time event winners were crowned on both the men and women’s side after two days of competition.
Variable snow conditions and cloudy skies couldn’t dampen the high spirits and energy of the athletes and the huge crowd gathered to watch the action. “Going into today we knew we had a weather window in the morning and lucked out,” said Competition Director Ron Pankey. “Due to the approaching storm it was a one run final with skiers stepping up their game in response. “
No one could touch the lead Kaylin Richardson had heading into the finals, winning her first FWT event and adding North American Freeskiing Championship to the Park City local’s long list of skiing accomplishments with an overall score of 70.30. Two-time Olympian Richardson skied the top of “North Baldy” in her signature aggressive style and sealed the deal with a straight-line cliff drop to finish her winning run. Coming in second, earning a two-day combined score of 67.30 was Jackson Hole’s Crystal Wright who showcased her strong, athletic skiing on the “Amphitheater” section. Rounding out the women’s podium was Snowbird’s Angel Collinson earning a score of 63.57. Wright and Collinson are now tied for the overall 2012 tour title with only the Kirkwood stop left to go this season.
Also winning his first FWT event is Mad River Glen’s Silas Chickering-Ayers who blew away the finals field scoring 41.03 for today’s run, six points ahead of the next competitor of the day, totaling 76.40 for the championship. His big left-side 360 through the “Fields of Glory” was just one highlight of his flawless run. The elder Chickering-Ayers, Lars, winner of Snowbird in 2010 was unable to compete due to injury so it was a fitting honor for his brother to take home today’s championship.
“Despite the hard conditions today I knew everyone would be skiing hard and that I had to send it and stay on my feet,” said Chickering-Ayers. “It couldn’t have gone better.”In second was Day One leader and Alta/Snowbird local Spencer Brinson who dropped the huge cliff “Blonde Rock” earning a final score of 74.23. Third place went to Crested Butte’s Tom Runcie with a score of 72.30. Runcie also was bestowed with the Backcountry.com Sickbird belt buckle; a coveted award given at each tour stop to a skier who had an outstanding run or trick.
“Runcie got his first nomination on Day One with a huge, high speed double-stage cliff on “Silver Fox”, said Announcer Frankie Alisuag. “He solidified the win after hitting another high-speed double today, exhibiting his strength and confidence with speed.”
With both men’s and women’s champions first time winners, the new wave of freeskiing talent shows an exciting future for the tour.
The 2012 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour continues on next weekend with a Qualifier event in Moonlight Basin, MT March 22-25 and wraps up at Kirkwood, CA April 4-9. - Blog post
