  • Manhunt For Armed Fugitive Doe Manhunt For Armed Fugitive Does Little To Derail SoCal Shredders On A Powder Day

    • From: vandagyuris
    • Description:

       Bear Mountain

Nothing could keep Big Bear shredders indoors when a mid-February blizzard dumped two feet of pow on the Southern California dome – even a deadly manhunt for murder suspect and former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner.

Big Bear residents were put on high alert as schools closed, resorts shut down, and local shops locked up once the hunt for Dorner moved from Irvine to the mountain town above Los Angeles. Despite the warnings that the fugitive had stowed away in a cabin in the woods, Bear Mountain only shut down for one session. A thousand feet below, Snow Summit didn’t even blink an eye and carried on business as usual. With a record single snowfall of the season, mother earth’s gift of 24 inches overruled any fear of a convicted felon on the loose.

Dorner was suspected to have launched a killing spree that allegedly began on February 3rd in Irvine. Four days later, Dorner’s burned out truck was discovered in Big Bear Lake, commencing a six-day manhunt. Found barricaded inside a cabin on February 12, authorities tried to smoke him out with pyrotechnics. The cabin caught fire and Dorner’s charred remains were identified a few days later.

Throughout the ordeal, Bear Mountain offered a constant stream of updates on the status of the mountain on their homepage.

Despite the media blow out over a mountain lockdown, skiers and boarders continued to chase down fresh powder in the wake of magically clear conditions.

Undeterred shredders scrambled for first chair at Big Bear as authorities searched for murder suspect Chris Dorner. (Photo: Big Bear Mountain Resorts)

Closing only for a single afternoon session on precautionary terms, Bear continued to operate with all runs open and their legendary fully loaded park – including the big girl and boy playground, Red Bull Plaza. The Plaza provides an urban oasis for expert riders with 32 foot stairs, K-rails, a billboard wall ride, and a marble ledge, just to highlight a few.

The nonchalant tone on the mountain amidst national anxiety aligned with the essence of skiing and boarding. Sports so reliant upon Mother Nature to deliver opportunity, especially in a region like Southern California, cannot afford to waste a single snowflake. While tense vibes certainly permeated the community of Big Bear, on the mountain it was the crisp wind, the perfect sun and the smell of a fresh layer that reigned supreme.

  • Seth Morrison VS JP Auclair: T Seth Morrison VS JP Auclair: The King Of The Hill Final Battle

    • From: TetonGravityResearch

      King Of The Hill Header

It’s no wonder they made it this far - they are two of the biggest names in the ski game: Seth Morrison and JP Auclair.

In December, when we launched The King Of The Hill athlete battle, we selected 32 skiers from 4 ski film production companies and pitted them against each other in a March Madness style bracket to see who would come out on top. The goal was to let the public decide which skier they liked the best. At that point, it was anyone’s game.

Since then, there have been 30 different rounds of voting and it has all come down to this: Seth Morrison VS JP Auclair.

      So, who will it be?

      Will it be Seth Morrison?

Morrison has one of the longest careers in freeskiing history all while maintaining the highest level of athleticism. Morrison, originally from Kentucky but now residing in Colorado, has starred in over 22 ski movies. He’s competed in countless extreme skiing competitions, and logged plenty of first descents. Ask any skier: Morrison has one of the loftiest backflips in the sport. From bold, big mountain lines to ski mountaineering in Chamonix, Seth Morrison is one of the best all-around skiers of all-time.

Or will it be JP Auclair?

Auclair, a French Canadian, helped Salomon launch the 1080 ski in 1998 – revolutionizing the freeskiing movement with the first twin tip ski. Then, in 2002, Auclair co-founded Armada skis, injecting new life into the sport with the slogan, “what skiing will become.” And let’s not forget Auclair’s street-skiing segment from “All.I.Can.” Since it came out, athletes and filmers are still trying to create something as engaging. From big mountain lines to urban to founding one of the best companies in skiing, JP Auclair is one of the best all-around skiers of all-time.

So who will it be? Seth Morrison or JP Auclair? Only you can decide.

  • News: Big Year Ahead For The 2 News: Big Year Ahead For The 2013 World Heli Challenge

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

      2012 World Heli Challenge

Lake Wanaka - Exciting changes to the World Heli Challenge announced today will see a new Junior World Heli Challenge event and a revised elite format to the World Heli Challenge with limited athlete numbers for 2013.

Event founder and director Tony “Harro” Harrington is excited to launch the Junior World Heli Challenge as part of the competition next year. “For the past couple of years we’ve developed the concept of selected ‘Young Guns’ in the competition so this is a natural progression to involve more junior skiers and boarders,” explains Harrington.

“There is such strong interest coming from young athletes from around the world that we’ve decided to create a tailored event just for them.  We’re excited about the opportunity to help these boys and girls develop the skills and awareness about the backcountry that will hopefully see them progress to the World Heli Challenge in years to come. We love their passion and are blown away by how many young people and their families want to be involved.”

The Junior World Heli Challenge will be open to 15 skiers and 15 snowboarders aged between 12 and 16 years.  As with the senior event, the standard is high and athletes will be assessed on their skills and experience to be eligible. The Junior World Heli Challenge will take place over one week starting 26th July 2013 and includes one heli-accessed competition day in the backcountry of New Zealand’s Southern Alps surrounding Wanaka.  In addition to the competition day a major focus is backcountry tuition and awareness training, snow days and family time at the local ski resorts.

The main event – the World Heli Challenge – is set for some dynamic changes for 2013 with a new restricted line-up limited to just 32 athletes; 12 males and 4 females each skiing and boarding in the competition.

“This is an elite and unique event and by keeping our numbers contained we have better options for accessing new terrain and hidden stashes down the Southern Alps to take the competition to a whole new level,” said Harrington.

“The World Heli Challenge is a gathering, it is an event like no other in the world and we are committed to keeping it contained and preserving its essence.  We could easily grow the event but would risk losing its authenticity, the camaraderie and diluting the intensity of the experience for everyone.”

      EVENT DATES FOR 2013:

Junior World Heli Challenge:  Friday 26th July 2013 (registration night) to the Saturday 3rd August, 2013 (Awards Night)

World Heli Challenge:  Sunday 4th August, 2013 (registration day) to the Thursday 22nd August, 2013 (Showcase Awards Night)

Information about the Junior World Heli Challenge will soon be posted at www.worldhelichallenge.com and all of the details on the World Heli Challenge main event, entry fees and registration will also be loaded to the site by February 2013.

I once fell off my skateboard at 32 mph, and peeled most of the skin off my shoulder, knees, and palms. Then again, I was dual tow-skating, aka skitching, and my buddy let go of the rope without warning, sending me skidding across the street in board-shorts and a beater. That's right, I had a tow-rope attached to the hitch of my Civic. I highly recommend against any of this. What I would recommend, however, is trying out a Freebord. Especially if you enjoy snowboarding, but feel disconnected from the mountains in the off-seasons.

Freebords provide the feel of a snowboard, on a surface much less forgiving than snow. The trucks are much wider than the board, so wheel-bite is no longer a concern, and they come with a third wheel that allows you to carve against the slope and slide 180s and 360s with ease. In this video, Freebord team rider Mike Hoppe chases Corey Lucero down a seemingly endless hill in California, and tops out at 37.6 mph into oncoming traffic.

Rider: Galen Carter Filmed By: Shawn Carter Filmed from the Snowbird Tram on March 9th, 2012. The concept was to get a run right under the tram North Chute, Hanging Bowl, The Glade, Andersons, and Daltons on a sick pow day. Sadly, the opportunity window never opened for it this year but we have some ideas for coming seasons. The upside to the crappy conditions was the complete lack of anyone else in the edit. The clip is a testament to the strength of the rider. A small percentage of rippers are capable of shredding this run nonstop under ideal conditions and even substantially less with a mix of melt freeze and super hard chalk.

The Rahlves' Banzai Tour, the premier big mountain skier and boarder-cross event in the U.S., concluded this past weekend at Sugar Bowl Resort in California. This year's tour took place at four Lake Tahoe, California resorts including Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Kirkwood Mountain Resort and Sugar Bowl Resort. The event featured head to head action with four competitors at a time, racing down a course featuring all natural terrain and snow conditions.

It was the ultimate test of skiing and riding skills. Saturday's qualifying event ranked the top 32 Men's and top 16 Women's skiers and snowboarders, advancing them into Sunday's finals and a shot at winning the tour title in their respective categories. • News: Kye Peterson, Ashley Max News: Kye Peterson, Ashley Maxfield 1st After Day 1 Of Freeskiing World Tour In Revelstoke

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

Freeskiing World Tour Day 1 Revelstoke
Revelstoke, Britsh Columbia – Day One of the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour went off Friday on Revelstoke’s “North Bowl” with great success.  The level of skiing and athleticism displayed was high, with athletes battling for the few spots in Sunday’s finals.

Already a freeskiing legend at the young age of 21, Kye Peterson of Whistler/Blackcomb, Canada, topped the Men’s field by taking full advantage of the terrain “North Bowl” has to offer. Kye successfully skied off a big double-staged cliff up top, and then skied fast and aggressively through the open bowl.  To gain maximum style and creativity points, he landed two huge 360s at the bottom, impressing fans and judges alike.  Sitting in second place, with his playful, fluid, stylish skiing, is Subaru Freeskiing World Tour 2011 Champion and The North Face athlete, Drew Tabke, with a score of 39.17.  Completing out the top three Men’s finishers was Oakley White Allen of Snowbird, Utah, scoring 37.50.  Out of the 50 Men’s skiers, 25 men will advance to the heli-accessed Day 2 Finals on “Mac Daddy”, a remote location in the Revelstoke backcountry.

The stacked women’s field was very competitive, with only 3 points separating the top ten female competitors. Ashley Maxfield of Alta, Utah, skied the most technical line of the day for the women, wowing the crowd and surprising even herself. “I went bigger than I thought, but as soon as I landed on the second pillow I knew I had it” said Maxfield who scored 33.50.  Two- tenths of a point behind Maxfield sits the third place finisher of the 2011 Canadian Freeskiing Championships and Revelstoke local, Nicole Derksen with a score of 33.30.  Rounding out the top three Women’s Day 1 competitors is the 2011 Freeskiing World Tour Overall Champion and The North Face athlete, Angel Collinson with a score of 32.90.

“The level of skiing today was even higher than anticipated,” remarked Event Director Bryan Barlow. “Conditions were perfect. Soft landings and good snow allowed competitors to ski lines that have rarely or never been skied before.”

The 2012 Swatch Freeride and Freeskiing World Tour at Revelstoke Mountain Resort continues Saturday with snowboarders from The Swatch Freeride World Tour and The North Face Masters of Snowboarding, competing on Mac Face for a one-run final.  The Final Day, Day 2, of the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour is currently scheduled for Sunday, January 8.

  • News: Benjamin Ogilvie, Lexi D News: Benjamin Ogilvie, Lexi Dupont Win Freeskiing World Tour Qualifier In Revelstoke

    • Description:

      Freeskiing World Tour Revelstoke
Revelstoke, BC – Revelstoke’s Separate Reality venue was host to Thursday’s Qualifier for the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour. With few spots up for grabs in today’s Day 1 of competition, skiers pushed the limits of big mountain freeskiing to earn their spot. Taking first out of 60 competitors in the Men’s field was Benjamin Ogilvie from Fernie, BC. In first for the Women is Snowbird local Lexi Dupont from a stacked roster of 23 ladies.

“In today’s qualifier, it was definitely clear that skiers needed to step up in every aspect of the criteria; they had to have great technique, control and fluidity,” notes Head Judge Jim Jack on the selective cut. Out of the deep qualifier field, 13 men and 4 women will advance to today's Day 1 competition on North Bowl’s Unlimited Assets. “It was a very competitive cut, so congratulations to the skiers that made it in,” said Jack.

On the women’s side, athletes skied very smart and safe and 99 percent of the competitors stayed on their feet. “Winner Lexi Dupont skied fast and fluid, with direct fall-line skiing,” remarked Announcer Max Kuszaj. “Its no surprise she is sitting in the top qualifying position going into Day 1.” Canadian Crystal-Rose Lee was a close second. For the men, the majority of the skiers made the best use of the terrain and the style/creativity category by adding newschool tricks into their run, which benefited their scores. “A standout for me would be Fernie BC’s own Luke Nelson with his fast, fluid technical skiing on the top of Separate Reality, and smooth 360 at the bottom, encompassing all aspects we encourage in a competitor’s run,” says Kuszaj.

Skiers on the mountain experienced a mix of sun and snow with great conditions and visibility of the venue. “Conditions for this event are definitely shaping up to be some of the best we’ve had here at Revelstoke. The consistency of the snow will make landings cleaner and provides athletes a venue to showcase their abilities. Day 1 of the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour starts today and will be broadcast live on www.freeskiingworldtour.com.

      Wolf Creek opening day 2011

A snowboarder slashes a turn at Colorado's Wolf Creek Ski Area on Saturday, October 8, 2011.

      October 10, 2011

Game on! With the snow in the West this past weekend, people were skiing almost everywhere.

Southern Colorado's Wolf Creek Ski Area, the first area to officially open, reported that roughly 1,500 skiers and snowboarders made the trip for its Saturday opening — possibly the earliest ski area opening date in Colorado history. Some people were so stoked that they slept in their vehicles in the parking lot to catch the season's first chair Saturday morning.

Eight inches fell Friday night to compliment the three feet that had already fallen. Opening day was a powder day.

A snow depth of 35 inches at the summit and 32 inches midway is quite respectable, and 44 inches of snow to date is unheard of for an opening day at Wolf Creek. The ski area will remain open through Columbus Day and then reopen for Saturday and Sunday, the 15th and 16th, after not operating Tuesday through Friday.

Meanwhile, plenty of others got out this weekend to take advantage of the snow in the West, even if their local slopes were closed.

Below are some shred videos from this weekend. Enjoy them, then get out there. It's on.

  • News: Slip Derails Ted Ligety' News: Slip Derails Ted Ligety's Attempt At 4 Consecutive GS Wins

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

      January 8, 2011

Adelboden, Switzerland – Audi FIS Alpine World Cup giant slalom leader Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) put it all on the line Saturday before going down on his hip and breaking his string of three World Cup GS victories. France's Cyprien Richard and Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal produced a rare tie for the win, while Olympic champion Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) finished 22nd and Ligety 28th.

There was a lot at stake for Ligety as he slid into the start house for the first run of GS on the classic Adelboden course. He came in with a three GS win streak and had a chance to be the first racer in 32 years to clinch four consecutive GS World Cup races in a single season.

Things were looking good after the first run as Ligety posted the fastest time, building a .36 cushion for the second run despite nearly sliding out near the finish. The win was in his reach as 30,000 fans echoed through the legendary alpine valley where the World Cup was born in early 1967.

"Despite that mistake right before the finish, I'm really happy with my run," said Ligety. "I'm psyched about the position I'm in for the second run and the snow is perfect for me. It's warm, nice and slushy, just like spring in Park City."

The light then went out on Ligety. As the afternoon set on Adelboden, so did the light on the race hill with the final 10 racers skiing in extremely flat conditions.

With a spectacular second run in excellent light conditions Richard, who was a second and a half behind Ligety after the first run, took full advantage of the early round two start to move up 20 spots while Svindal jumped from sixth for the win.

Awaiting potential history, the fans cheered with support and excitement as Ligety kicked out of the start. However, today was not his day. Tough light conditions and falling on his hip silenced his GS streak. As a loud sigh echoed from the crowd, Ligety bounced back into the course after letting out a frustrated scream to finish 28th.

"He went out about a third of the way into the second run and then got back up and continued," explained Technical Head Mike Day. "It's a bit of a bummer, but he showed again first run where his GS is right now."

Miller, the only other American to qualify for the second run, was one of just two racers outside of the top 30 to make the second run start list. With an incredibly tight first run, Miller squeezed into the flip with 26th and finished the day in 22nd.

Although disappointed, the U.S. Ski Team has already shifted gears to Sunday's race and begun training slalom immediately after the race finished.

"That's ski racing," said Day. "We'll move on and get ready for slalom tomorrow."

Ligety and Miller will be joined by David Chodounsky (Crested Butte, CO), Will Brandenburg (Spokane, WA) and Nolan Kasper (Warren, VT) in Sunday's slalom. The race is scheduled to start at 4:30 a.m. ET with live streaming available at www.UniversalSports.com.

Here's Bode Miller's first run from Adelboden:

Wescott, who becomes the first American skier or snowboarder since Andrea Mead Lawrence in 1952 to win two golds, overtook Canadian Mike Robertson late in a thrilling charge to the finish, then dropped to his knees and cloaked himself in his grandfather's World War II American service flag.

"I knew that if I could stay with them to lower parts and try to execute those turns a bit better, that I could probably generate speed to that final straightaway, and it worked," Wescott said after starting from fourth position to give the U.S. Olympic Team its second gold of these Games.

Nate Holland (Squaw Valley, CA), a five-time X Games gold medalist who edged Wescott less than two weeks ago in Aspen, CO, spun out early and seemingly gifted the race to Robertson.

"I was going toe-to-toe with Robertson for a gold medal," Holland said. "Coaches told me that Robertson was getting great starts, but I'm faster on the course, so just be patient.

"I knew I was riding really well on the course and I like to battle. I was happy to do that. I was actually setting him up for that next straightaway - that's where I was going to pull a pass. You know, it just didn't work out. A snow snake got me, and what can you do?"

His teammate and friend seized on the opportunity, with Wescott taking riskier lines than the other riders and soon finding himself on Robertson's tail before executing an expertly timed right-hand pass for the lead.

Finding the strength to maintain his advantage was no problem for the 33-year-old who injured his leg and pelvis competing in Telluride in December and couldn't walk for two weeks.

"It hurt bad for a while and it took about six weeks to loosen up," Wescott said. "Once I got through X Games 12 days ago, that was the first time really since December that my body felt good."

Another issue for Wescott had been staying amped when he was already so accomplished, and injuries continued to be such a struggle - a problem that a return to the Olympics helped him clear up.

"It's hard for me to be super motivated week in and week out on the World Cup," he said. "I've just been at it too long. You need something like this or the X Games or the World Championships to get motivated. That gives you a level of energy that you don't have week in and week out.

"It was amazing to do it the first time," Wescott said of his win in Torino. "My focus really had changed from February of '03, when we found out that snowboardcross was going to be in the Olympics, I quit riding halfpipe and focused solely on it. To have had the ups and downs in the last four years from shattering my arm to not necessarily having the best motivation all the time it's amazing to come and stand on this stage again and to do it."

Wescott had instructed a friend to keep his grandfather's flag in a safe place at the finish line, where his father had it for him in Torino.

"It's a powerful thing for me," said Wescott, who started 17th of 32 riders after qualifcations. "We rarely as snowboard athletes get to compete in front of our families, and to have something like that that's a memento from my grandfather is a powerful thing to be able to show to the world."

Meanwhile, a still-chipper Holland said he's resigned to accept his fate as one half of his home nation's grip on the premier international snowboardcross events.

"I'm so fired up for Wescott," Holland said. "To double gold in the 'Olys,' to repeat in the 'Olys,' that's pretty amazing. I guess I'll just let him have the 'Olys,' and I'll take control of the X Games, and together as teammates we'll just control the two biggest snowboard races in the world."

The U.S. Snowboarding Team qualified all four of its riders, with Graham Watanabe (Sun Valley, ID) recording the second fastest time only to lose a photo finish that would have advanced him to the second round. Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, MI) slid off course after a mistake.
