News: James Woods And Keri Her News: James Woods And Keri Herman Win At Copper Mountain
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:

Copper Mountain, Colo. – Keri Herman’s (Breckenridge, CO) back-to-back switch tricks and clean landings sealed the deal for her second straight World Cup win at the Visa U.S. Freeskiing Grand Prix at Copper Mountain. Herman’s first run featured one of the best displays of grabs fans have seen in women’s slopestyle skiing. Her run included a lipslide first rail, bus stop to switch, switch right 720 safety-grab, switch right 540 Japan-grab, right 540 tail-grab. Great Britain’s James Woods took the men’s title.
Americans took four of the top eight spots including Bobby Brown (Breckenridge, CO) fourth, Nick Goepper (Lawrenceburg, IN) fifth, Alex Schlopy (Park City, UT) seventh and Sammy Carlson (Hood River, OR) eighth. American women took four of the top nine with Ashley Battersby (Park City, UT) sixth, Jamie Crane-Mauzy (Park City, UT) eighth and U.S.Freeskiing rookie Jess Breda (Marshfield, MA) ninth at just her second World Cup. The event also doubled as the U.S. Slopestyle Championship with Brown and Herman taking titles as top Americans. The athletes gained valuable FIS Olympic qualifying points in addition to AFP Platinum level points.
“I am so happy!” said Keri Herman. “At Dew Tour in December I finished dead last and this is great! It’s so cool to have won both FIS World Cup’s so far; it’s a real honor to represent the USA at the top of the podium. I tried so hard to grab well in my run and it worked out. The field of competition was tough and I am lucky the score from my first run held, because I fell on my second run. This is such a good confidence booster heading into X Games.”

The North Face PPOS allows top-level professionals and up-and-coming freeskiing athletes the opportunity to advance in the competition circuit at all four stops throughout the 2013 tour.

The events are very well organized with a full panel of Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) certified judges and courses at world-class resorts.”
The first stop at Copper Mountain will be the first AFP sanctioned event in the United States for the 2013 competition season. In addition, the Copper Mountain event will be an International Ski Federation (FIS) sanctioned NORAM CUP event with athletes earning FIS points.
“FIS is excited to be able to integrate The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series events in Copper Mountain, CO and Northstar, CA into the 2012-13 FIS Freestyle NORAM NORAM CUP,” said Konrad X Rotermund, FIS Freestyle Continental Cup Coordinator-Americas. “These events will provide a great opportunity for athletes to get their needed FIS points to be part of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games qualification process and/or earn the opportunity to be the NORAM CUP Champion. Recognizing schedules are very full in North America, it is great to be able to cooperate with the already established PPOS events to give the athletes multiple avenues to meet their competitive goals in a single event.”
Halfpipe skiing will make its Olympic debut in 2014 at the Sochi, Russia Winter Games. The PPOS will work in conjunction with the AFP to ensure professional competition judging in accordance with AFP standards and criteria. Judging is based on overall impression, including content, difficulty of run, style and use of park or pipe.
“I am excited to be a part of the The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series at Copper Mountain,” said The North Face Athlete Mike Riddle. “The best athletes in the world are all converging at the resort this early season to get dialed in for the coming season. The event will see a very skilled field showing-off the tricks they have practiced all summer.”
The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series at Copper Mountain begins on Friday, Dec. 7 with athlete registration. The competition kicks off on Saturday, Dec. 8 with practice and qualifiers in the Main Vein Superpipe, and concludes on Sunday, Dec. 9 with finals. Description:
Athlete Registration Opens Thursday, November 8, 2012, 10 AM MST
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – As the first traces of snow dust North American mountain peaks, freeskiing athletes everywhere are revving up for another exciting winter competition season. Falling in line with the anticipation of a great winter, The North Face announced venues for The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS), including Copper Mountain, CO (Dec. 8-9); Whistler Blackcomb, BC (Jan. 14-17); Waterville Valley, NH (Feb. 23) and Northstar California Resort, CA (March 8-10).
“This year’s events are perfectly scheduled to provide prime advancement opportunities for athletes ready to take their freeskiing career to the next level,” said Barb Hamblett PPOS Event Director with Mountain Sports International, Inc. (MSI). “Spectators can expect to see exciting top level competition at all four PPOS stops this season.”
All four PPOS events are part of the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) competition schedule. The Copper Mountain and Northstar California Resort stops will both be International Ski Federation (FIS) sanctioned NORAM CUP events with athletes earning FIS points. Athlete registration for all four PPOS stops will open Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. MST.
“FIS is excited to be able to integrate The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series events in Copper Mountain, CO and Northstar, CA into the 2012-13 FIS Freestyle NORAM CUP,” said Konrad X Rotermund FIS Freestyle Continental Cup Coordinator-Americas.
Founded in 2010, The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS) features slopestyle and halfpipe skiing competitions with $55,000 in total prize value up for grabs. As one of the only open-format event series, amateurs have the opportunity to compete alongside top pros.
“The North Face is excited to bring yet another season of freeskiing competition opportunities to athletes, both professional and amateur, across North America,” said The North Face Director of Sports Marketing Katie Ramage. “The progression of the sport of freeskiing is important to us, and this competition format is another way for us to support that movement.”
Slopestyle skiing takes place in a venue comprised of man-made features such as rails, boxes and jumps contained on a single slope. Halfpipe skiing takes place in a halfpipe similar to those used for halfpipe snowboarding. Skiers accelerate through the pipe to gain increased height jumping out of the halfpipe while simultaneously executing challenging grabs, spins, flips and other maneuvers. Skiers string together a series of aerials from the halfpipe in a single run. Judging is based on overall impression, including content, difficulty of run, style and use of park or pipe. Both slopestyle and halfpipe skiing will make their Olympic debut in 2014 at the Sochi, Russia Winter Games. The PPOS will work in conjunction with the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) on competition judging with Steele Spence serving as head judge for the series.
“The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series is very important for North American freeskiing athletes,” said Steele Spence, PPOS series head judge. “The series is a stepping stone for athletes hoping to progress to the top level of competition. News: Torin Yater-Wallace, Dev News: Torin Yater-Wallace, Devin Logan Win FIS Freestyle Ski Halfpipe World Cup
- From: media-75233
-
Description:

Cardrona, New Zealand – The world's top ranked freestyle skiers battled it out under picture-perfect blue skies at Cardrona Alpine Resort yesterday where Torin Yater-Wallace and Devin Logan, both from the USA, won the men and women's FIS Freestyle Ski Halfpipe World Cup titles.A talented men's field of 36 freestyle skiers competed in the qualifying heat for the top 12 spots. With two runs per round, best run counting, Thomas Krief of Fance, Torin Yater-Wallace of the USA, and Antti-Jussi Kemppainen of Finland, took the top three spots. Twenty-seven women lined up for the qualifier with Devin Logan of the USA scoring the highest.
Torin Yater-Wallace came out on top in the end with a huge second run. He was awarded 93 points and took the lead from Thomas Krief who finished in second place with 90 points. Benoit Valentin of France placed third overall with 84.2 points.
Yater-Wallace's winning run was made up of a double cork 1260 mute grab, an alleyoop flat spin 540, a 900 tail grab, a 1080 tail grab and a switch 900 mute grab. Head judge Spence Steele said the judges were impressed with the execution and amplitude of the winning run. "The pipe skiing was phenomenal today. The top skiers were very impressive for the first competition of the qualifying season," he said.
The women's final produced some big spins and tail grabs. Current Overall AFP World Champion Devin Logan lived up to expectations taking out first place with a score of 83.0, despite not landing her first run. It was second and third for Japanese skiers Manami Mitsuboshi, with 80.0 points, and Ayana Onozuka, with 78.6 points.
"The weather and conditions were amazing today. I had a great qualifying round and really felt the pressure for my second final's run. The Japanese girls were really pushing me. I was lucky today – it's a good start to the season," said Logan.
Janina Kuzma, from Wanaka, was the only New Zealand female to go through to the women's finals in 12th place. A gutsy second final's run that scored 76.6 points put her in fourth place overall. Jossi Wells finished 7th overall scoring 76.6 on his first run and not landing his second run.
For the first time, freestyle ski athletes' competition points will count towards gaining an Olympic spot. The International Olympic Committee announced in April that men's and women's halfpipe skiing will be an Olympic sport at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The action continues on Friday and Saturday, August 25-26, with the FIS Snowboard Halfpipe World Cup also at Cardrona Alpine Resort.

News: Snow Sports New Zealand News: Snow Sports New Zealand Awards Winners Announced
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Adam Hall, Athlete of the Year, poses with coach Scott Olson, Coach of the Year. Photo via Snow Sports NZLake Wanaka, New Zealand – Skier Adam Hall was awarded Snow Sports New Zealand’s coveted Overall Athlete of the Year Award friday night. Adam had his best year ever, taking Gold in both Slalom and Super G at the World Cup in Winter Park, Colorado, and in Slalom and Super Combined at the World Cup Finals. Now dominating in both technical and speed events, Adam is in a great position to come home from his next Paralympic Winter Games with multiple medals.
Adam credited much of his amazing success over the past season to his new coach, Scott Olson, who took out this year’s Coach of the Year award, and to his support team. He acknowledged the successes of his adaptive teammates Carl Murphy, nominee for Adaptive Athlete of the Year and Snowboard Athlete of the Year, and Corey Peters, nominee for Emerging Talent, suggesting that Adaptive Snow Sports NZ “could easily feature one of its largest teams ever at the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi.” Adam said that, while his mother Gayle Hall is no longer with us, she is still a voice in his ear everyday, pushing him towards success at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games.
Adam’s award was presented by long-time supporter of Adaptive Snow Sports in New Zealand, Tony Hall, whose late wife Gilly founded Disabled Snow Sports New Zealand. Adam said, “Without the work done by Gilly, I wouldn’t be standing here today.”
The Emerging Talent of the Year award went to freeskiing’s Rose Battersby. Rose had a standout first season of international competition with several top ten finishes. She placed 9 in Slopestyle at the Winter X Games and Euro X Games. She also took 9 in Halpipe at the AFP World Championships in Whistler. She was on the podium at the AFP World Championships with a third place finish in Big Air.
The Overall Athlete is selected from finalists in each sport category. Finalists this year included:
Freeskiing Athlete of the Year - Sam Smoothy
Sam became the first ever to podium at three consecutive World Freeride Tour stops. He won the Chamonix stop and then went on to place second in Courmayeur and third in Roldal. He was ranked number one for almost the entire season and, had he not taken a fall in the finals, was in prime position to end his season ranked number one on the world tour. The fall landed him with a still very respectable fourth place ranking on the tour.
Ski Racing’s Athlete of the Year - Ben Griffin
Ben is New Zealand’s National Champion in Super G, Giant Slalom and Slalom. He placed second in GS and Super-G at the National Championships and is the lowest FIS points holder amongst kiwis in both disciplines.
Cross Country Athlete of the Year - Andy Pohl
Andy placed 18 in 15km Skate and first in the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Division at the Canadian National Championships. He was second overall in CIS Nordic skiing. He represented New Zealand at the U23 World Championships and placed 40 in Pursuit. He was winner of the Winter Games New Zealand winter triathlon.
Snowboarding Athlete of the Year - Rebecca Sinclair
Rebecca started her Northern Hemisphere season with a fourth place finish at the TTR World Championships. She then went on to take 6 at the European X Games. She placed tenth at the prestigious US Open and ended her season with a win at the Rockstar Throwback Throwdown where she took first in Superpipe and second in Minipipe for the overall win.

Alex Schlopy hits a jump in to an airbag landing at U.S. Freeskiing spring training camp at Mammoth Mountain.
Mammoth Lakes, CA – Some of U.S. Freeskiing’s best athletes, like recently crowned AFP halfpipe World Champion Torin Yater-Wallace (Basalt, CO) and AFP slopestyle World Champion Tom Wallisch (Pittsburgh, PA) have descended upon Mammoth Mountain’s award winning Unbound Terrain Park for a weeklong intensive training camp. This is the first spring training camp since the inauguration of U.S. Freeskiing in December 2011. This unique opportunity consists of dryland training, one-on-one coaching and video review.
Mammoth’s Unbound Terrain Park and its ideal spring conditions have produced top-notch on snow training with jumps, their signature halfpipe and airbags for these elite team members. Not only are athletes learning new tricks in a relaxed environment, but consulting with their coaches looking to strategize for the upcoming 2012-’13 season.
“Team training camps are essential to athlete training not only for skills, but team building,” U.S. Freeskiing Head Coach Mike Jankowski said. “While they are on the same team, these athletes still compete against each other at events. This spring training camp is a great way to get together outside of competition to progress in a pressure free environment.”
Torin Yater-Wallace (Basalt, CO), Tom Wallisch (Pittsburgh, PA) and Maddie Bowman (South Lake Tahoe, CA) are some of the U.S. Freeskiing athletes that are in attendance. The camp opened May 4 and will run through May 14.
“After a long season of competition it’s so nice to be out here in Mammoth hitting perfect jumps,” Tom Wallisch said. “This season couldn’t have gone any better for me and I am stoked to have some chill training time just riding spring conditions and working on tricks. It’s the perfect set-up.” - Blog post

News: Gus Kenworthy, Roz Groen News: Gus Kenworthy, Roz Groenewoud Win The North Face Park & Pipe Open At Whistler
- From: media-75233

Description:
Whistler, British Columbia - The first leg of The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS) wrapped up today under the mostly clear, cold skies of Whistler Blackcomb, BC. In total, $10,000 in prize money was awarded with Roz Groenewoud of Whistler taking the women's title and Gus Kenworthy of Telluride, Colorado, taking the men's title. The Whistler stop was the last event the 2012 Winter X Games athlete selection committee considered for invites, allowing competitors a final opportunity to earn a spot to ride in the X Games halfpipe competition. Megan Gunning and Kris Atkinson, both from Calgary, Alberta, earned their spots at the X Games.
The North Face PPOS works in conjunction with the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) on competition judging, and is a gold- -level event. Judging is based on overall impression with categories including creativity, degree of difficulty, combinations, variations, style, and amplitude.
"It's great being here at The North Face Park and Pipe Open. This event really shows the level of talent in Freeskiing right now. The depth of athletes that we saw here today is pretty unbelievable and it really sets things up as we look ahead to Russia in 2014," Head Judge Mike Atkinson.
Roz Groenewoud, the only female competitor to include a right side 900, lead the field after her first run, which scored a hefty 88.2. Just behind with a score of 84.4 was Maddie Bowman of South Lake Tahoe, CA, and rounding out the podium in third was Keltie Hansen of Calgary, AB, with 79.4. With the top three women already qualified for the X Games, fourth place finisher Megan Gunning, also from Calgary, AB, earned the opportunity to compete at the 2012 X Games.
"It wasn't the cleanest run of my ski career but it felt really good to put down my tricks. The Canadian Team has been training here for the last week and we all really wanted to compete, to support Whistler as much as we can. This is the best the pipe has been in a while, and it felt good to put down a full run in preparation of some of the big events coming up," Roz Groenewoud, women's Champion.
Women's champion Roz Groenewoud.Men's Champion Gus Kenworthy suffered some challenges earlier in the day, breaking his binding in the practice round, which caused him to miss the majority of training. Opting not to attempt any double maneuvers, Kenworthy nailed two forward 10's, in both directions and included a switch hit to secure the title with a score of 88.2, ahead of Kris Atkinson of Calgary, AB with 83.2. Atkinson, who fought his way through the qualifying rounds to take the silver in the finals also won the coveted spot at the 2012 Winter X Games Halfpipe event next month in Aspen, CO. Joss Christensen of Park City, UT took third with 82.2, Mike Riddle of Whistler finished fourth with a score of 81.0, and Matt Margetts of Penticton, BC, rounded out the top five with 79.0.
"This is an AFP Gold Level event, so the only other events that rank higher than this throughout the year are X Games, Euro X and Dew Tour. So if an event is up in that same bracket of points, it's super important for me to attend. I'm trying to win the overall again. Plus there's good prize money as well as a good pipe here in Whistler. It's just awesome to keep competing in between these big events," men's Champion Gus Kenworthy.
Men's champion Gus Kenworthy.
"The X Games has always been a dream for me, ever since I was a little kid. I can't believe I'm finally going to be there!" Kris Atkinson.
