Nixon Surf Challenge 2013 - Ev Nixon Surf Challenge 2013 - Event Recap

Description:
NIXON SURF CHALLENGE 2013 | EVENT RECAP from NIXON Europe on Vimeo.
The 12th edition of the Nixon Surf Challenge, in association with Monster Energy, Dragon and Reef, headed all the way north to Iceland for an incredible adventure just below the Arctic Circle, May 13-19 2013.
After a week of exploring the volcanic island and surfing little-known breaks peppered along Iceland dramatic coastline, France's Vincent Duvignac was voted Best Overall by his fellow surfers. The 25-year-old stood out from the crowd thanks to his tireless motivation to score waves despite the freezing temperatures, as well as his consistently impressive performances in the glacial water.
Australia's Chippa Wilson walked away with the Best Trick award, doing just about enough in the eyes of his fellow surfers to edge out William Aliotti. Armed with his huge arsenal of aerial tricks and an uncanny ability to eek the most out of the conditions, Chippa took to Iceland like a duck to water.
The third and final award was the 'I Rocked Iceland' prize. And that went to the Canary Islands' Jose Maria Cabrera. Bursting with positive energy throughout the trip, Cabrera was a veritable force of nature that embraced the daily challenge of paddling out in barely-above freezing water temperatures while still finding the energy to party with the best of them on fun-fueled nightlife adventures in Reykjavik

Dropping In: 6 Questions With Dropping In: 6 Questions With Steve Jones On The Co-Lab
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
Teton Gravity Research has been organizing The Co-Lab $100,000 freeskiing video project for years. Since announcing the contest to the public last May, there have been many questions as to how it will work.
We sat down with TGR co-founder Steve Jones to talk about The Co-Lab.
1) There is a lot of talk about The Co-Lab $100,000 freeskiing video contest. When the day comes to unveil the videos to the world, what do you hope to see?
Steve Jones: I have been hearing lots of background talk from undiscovered skiers, to pros working on segments. I think this thing could go any number of ways. Some guys are working on all park style skiing, some guys on more urban-centric edits, and some guys on more of a freeride type of a vibe. With the way people have evolved their skiing, I think we will see a lot of diverse edits that include lots of different styles of skiing. In terms of participants, from what I am hearing about on the street, this $100,000 could go to anyone.
2) What do you think will make a successful edit for The Co-Lab?
Steve Jones: I think some people think they need helicopters and all kinds of hi-tech camera equipment to win. That is not the case. I think it will come down to the most innovative riding combined with the most innovative editing. Creativity, aggressiveness, style, resourcefulness will all play a big part.
Another cool thing is that if you don't win the grand prize we are going to be announcing some sub-category awards as well. We are still defining those but things like, “Best foot-powered edit,” “Best Trick,” “Rowdiest Line,” “Most Innovative/Creative” are some of the ideas being thrown around. These are not final yet, but you get the idea. We are hoping to have a much smaller cash component to award for these sub-categories. Again, still in the works but hopefully can release some sub-categories soon.
3) If the edits are voted on by the people, how will the voting work? How will you prevent shenanigans?
Steve Jones: The people are only allowed to vote in the top 18 segments. Then there are three wildcards chosen by an outside panel of industry experts. Once the public has voted and the final 21 segments are locked, voting is closed to only those final 21 athletes to decide the ultimate winner.
4) What do you hope the final video for The Co-Lab to be?
Steve Jones: The final compilation film will be made up of the top 12 segments. From what I am hearing in the rumor mill and knowing some of the contestants, the final compilation will be a mix of undiscovered rippers and a variety of some of the industry's top pros. It's kind of cool because we expect to see guys from different film companies, competition backgrounds, local heroes, etc. mixed together into one final movie of their own personal edits. This is anyone's chance and it should be a colorful group of people. I think we are going to see some major surprises.
5) Will there be a movie tour for The Co-Lab movie?
Steve Jones: The Co-Lab will be distributed via iTunes and various other distribution platforms. We don't own the footage but we do retain the rights to distribute. There will be a ton of exposure for the people in this movie. We are considering showing CoLab at some of our bigger movie tour stops, as a lead in to our annual film. At very least we will be showing the winner's segment at all of the film tour venues as a preview. We will also distribute to film festivals and probably some TV coverage as well.
6) Do you guys really have $100,000?
Steve Jones: Yes we do, and somebody is going to be very happy.
--------
So, are you in? We want to hear your Co-Lab story. Send us an email to CoLab@tetongravity.com for a chance to be featured on this site.

News: 2013 Ouray Ice Festival News: 2013 Ouray Ice Festival This Weekend in Colorado
- From: mikehardaker
-
Description:

LOWA Boots is planning a very visible and strong presence at the 2013 Ouray Ice Festival that will take place January 10-13 in Ouray, Colorado. Earlier this fall, LOWA announced their sponsorship of the Hari Berger Speed Climbing Competition to honor the legendary climber who won three Ice Climbing World Championships while wearing LOWA boots. In addition, four-time World Ice Climbing Champion and LOWA athlete, Ines Papert, will conduct a clinic on moderate-mixed climbing and host a multi-media show entitled “Rock and Ice.” Amid the festival-like atmosphere will be the LOWA boot tent, stocked with demo product for ice climbers to test drive.
Friday afternoon Ines will host her clinic in the LOWA tent followed by a session on ice. She will have posters in hand to autograph. Later that evening, Ouray attendees can enjoy her presentation of “Rock and Ice,” a thrilling journey into her world. Afterwards will be an autograph session of her book by the same name. The event will be held in the Main Street Theater (630 Main Street) from 8:30 to 10:00PM. Admission fee: $15
On Sunday she will award the women’s prizes for the Hari Berger Competition. Ines has worked closely with the LOWA design and product testing teams over the years and was instrumental in the design of the Ice Comp IP. A champion of many climbing competitions, including those at the Ouray festival, she will be competing there again this year.
Hari Berger was an all around champion competition ice climber before he lost his life in 2006 in an accident while climbing in Austria…but his legacy lives on. LOWA’s sponsorship of the event doubles the Festival’s cash prize opportunities. The Competition will be held on Sunday, January 13. There will be individual men’s and women’s classes, each with $2000 in first place prizes, second place of $1000 and $500 for the third place finishers.
Colorado climber and LOWA ambassador, Jim Davidson, will be on hand periodically throughout the festival. Jim’s book, The Ledge: An Adventure Story of Friendship and Survival on Mount Rainier, was a 2011 best seller for adventurists across the country.
In addition, LOWA invites both male and female festival participants to demo their world-class German climbing and mountaineering boots including the Weisshorn GTX, Mountain Expert GTX and Ice Comp IP GTX models. The boot tent team will be led by Chad Gallwitz, LOWA’s experienced sales representative in the Rocky Mountains. Representing the LOWA factory, Rolf Eberhard, a veteran of numerous summits including one on Mt Everest, will be in the tent and on hand to award the men’s Hari Berger Competition prizes. Assisting Chad and Rolf will be Christian McConnell from LOWA’s U.S. office. - Blog post

“We are truly thrilled and honored to welcome The North Face Masters to our mountains,” said Andy Wirth, president and CEO of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. “The North Face Masters is undeniably one of the most prestigious events in big mountain snowboarding, and we look forward to watching the best snowboarders test their skills on our legendary terrain.”
In addition to the championship title, The North Face will also grant the A-Rob award in honor and memory of the late Master’s champion Aaron Robinson. The A-Rob award captures the spirit of the community and desire to explore the mountains. Another award up for grabs is The Young Gun Award for the under 21 rider who demonstrates raw talent, an innovative riding style and exemplifies true sportsmanship and passion for the mountains.
“Now in it’s sixth season, The North Face Masters is one of the largest big mountain snowboarding competition in the country, providing an opportunity for established riders, as well as up-and-comers, to put together a winning run during competition,” said The North Face Director, Sports Marketing Katie Ramage. “Utilizing control, fluidity, creativity and style in choosing their line, riders embrace the natural features within the venue to showcase their sport which continues to advance. We’re excited to bring this event to Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows given their world class terrain and history of attracting world class riders.”
The North Face Masters is part of the Freeride World Qualifier system. FWQs are rated on a 1 to 4-star scale with competitors earning more or less points at events according to venue difficulty and scale, competitive pool and other factors. The Masters is the top-level qualifier event and a pivotal step for athletes hoping to advance to the SWATCH Freeride World Tour by The North Face.
Athlete registration will open on December 4, 2012 at 10 a.m. MST. The North Face Masters is open to all men and women age 18 and above. For more information, please visit www.thenorthfacemasters.com or www.facebook.com/thenorthfacemasters.

News: Craig Kelly, Wayne Wong News: Craig Kelly, Wayne Wong And More To Join Ski And Snowboard Hall of Fame
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
Wayne Wong showing off his signature "Wong Banger."
ISHPEMING, MI - Freestyle skiing pioneer Wayne Wong and world champion freestyle moguls skier Jeremy Bloom lead an outstanding class of six inductees elected to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. Joining them will be Alpine World Championship medalist Kirsten Clark, world champion and snowboarding pioneer Craig Kelly, acclaimed international ski instructor and leader Horst Abraham and ski resort developer Hans Geier. U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame Chairman Bernie Weichsel made the announcement.
Wayne Wong is regarded by many as a living legend. He was the leading and most popular skier of his day when hotdog or freestyle skiing was emerging on the scene. The inventor of the famous “Wong Banger” and a star of countless skiing movies, Wong packaged his fame into being a true ambassador for skiing and continues to this day to convey his passion and enjoyment for the benefit of ski sports across the country. Both SKI and Powder magazines have named him among the most influential skiers in the 20th century.
Jeremy Bloom was also a star of freestyle skiing who won two World Cup titles and a World Championship and was one of America’s most visible skiing stars in the mid-2000’s. In 2003 he won gold in the dual moguls event at the World Championships and a silver in the individual moguls. Two years later he won his third World Championship medal as well as earning the moguls and overall World Cup titles. His six straight wins in World Cup competition set a record that stood for seven years. Bloom was also a football star at the University of Colorado and played for two years for the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers.
Kirsten Clark started racing at the age of seven, developing her skiing skills at Maine’s Sugarloaf Mountain. During her 13 year career on the U.S. Ski Team she won 12 U.S. titles and reached the World Cup podium eight times. In 2003 she won a World Championship silver medal in the super G. From 1998 to 2002 she strung together five straight U.S. downhill titles. A three time Olympian, Clark was respected for her quiet leadership and the high standards she set preparing for competition. Lindsey Vonn said of her, “Clarkie was always someone I looked up to.”
Craig Kelly is the third snowboarding honoree to be elected to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. A winner of four world titles in the early days of the sport, Kelly was one of its most influential pioneers working with Jake Burton Carpenter to open countless ski areas to the sport in the 1980s. He also played a key role during the early years of Burton Snowboards. The holder of an honors degree in chemical engineering, he starred in numerous skiing and snowboarding films over 20 years. The first true professional snowboarder, he was awarded TransWorld Snowboarding’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. He died a year later in an avalanche while seeking to become the first fully certified Canadian Mountain Guide as a snowboarder.
Horst Abraham is an Austrian native who rewrote the script for American ski instruction that had a significant impact internationally. Through his work America’s ski instructors emerged as world leaders in their field. Starting with the Aspen Ski School and later the technical director for the Vail Ski School, he eventually became the education vice president for the Professional Ski Instructors of America. As the developer of what became known as the American Teaching Method in 1980, focusing on teaching skiing skills instead of skiing turns, he led the U.S. to become the world leader in snow sports education.
Hans Geier was a leading manager and developer of ski areas across the United States for nearly 30 years. From the time he completed Pennsylvania’s Ski Round Top in 1971 until his retirement in 1998, he had a large impact on the growth of the sport. Most notably he was the general manager of Steamboat Springs resort in Colorado from 1981 to 1990 when he led it through a $43 million expansion, growing annual skier visits from 360,000 to over a million and putting the resort’s finances in the black. In 1994 he was hired as president of Doppelmayr Corporation for North America, a position he held until his retirement in 1998. He also served on numerous ski association boards including the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) and chairman of Colorado Ski Country. In 1988 the NSAA presented to him its Lifetime Achievement Award.
The induction of the Class of 2012 will take place at the Marriott Vail Resort in Vail, CO on April 13, 2013 as the concluding event for Skiing Heritage Week celebrating Vail’s 50th anniversary.
The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame provides highly respected perpetual national recognition to athletes competing in skiing and snowboarding and of the builders of these sports who have made the highest level of national and/or international achievement and contribution to American skiing and snowboarding. It is located in Ishpeming, MI, the birthplace of organized skiing in America, where it also serves as the headquarters for the International Skiing History Association. - Blog post

News: Three G3 Skis Recieve Fi News: Three G3 Skis Recieve Five Awards From Four Ski Magazines
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
VANCOUVER, B.C. – This fall, three new 2012-2013 skis from G3 Genuine Guide Gear, manufacturer of industry-leading backcountry ski gear, won five separate media awards from four different ski-focused publications, Skiing, Powder, Freeskier and Backcountry magazines.
With roots deep in backcountry and sidecountry ski culture, G3 has stepped into new terrain in recent years with wider, descent-focused, do-it-all skis such the Empire, Manhattan, District and women’s specific Cake.
The Empire, G3’s newest ski for deep snow and busting through crud, received three awards, an Editor’s Choice Award from Backcountry Magazine, a Skier’s Choice Award in Powder’s Buyer’s Guide and a Tester’s Choice Medal from Skiing Magazine.
Backcountry’s editors wrote, “With 127 mm underfoot, full reverse camber and a titanal aluminum topsheet, the Empire weighs less than similar boards … testers found the Empire to be more of a sidecountry playtoy than a touring machine, and there it excels. One tester concluded simply, ‘Fun, fun, FUN!’” Powder wrote, “A playful and buttery float in powder —perfect for drifting down the mountains of your dreams. Just point ‘em, and go.”
While the Empire led the lineup with the most awards, the newly redesigned Manhattan won an Editor’s Choice Award from Freeskier Magazine. And the new women’s specific Cake received the Tester’s Choice Medal from Skiing Magazine.
In addition to formal media awards, a number of other G3 skis were selected as notable performers in media ski tests. The Manhattan, the District and the Zest received Official Selection Medals from Skiing. And the District and the Cake were highlighted as notable performers in the Backcountry Gear Guide.
“As a brand that’s well known for backcountry and sidecountry skis, we’ve been pushing hard in the past few years to add to our ski collection with the Descent series, do-it-all freeride boards that are equally at home in the ski area, in the sidecountry or in the backcountry and with any kind of binding: alpine, AT or tele,” said Oliver Steffen, founder and president of G3. “We’re psyched to get this kind of validation that we’re on the track we want to be.”

News: Black Diamond To Acquire News: Black Diamond To Acquire Snow Safety Product Designer PIEPS
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
Black Diamond, Inc. (NASDAQ: BDE) has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire PIEPS Holding GmbH and its operating subsidiary, PIEPS GmbH (together “PIEPS”), a leading Austrian designer and marketer of avalanche beacons and snow safety products, from the SEIDEL Group, a family-owned group of companies focused on electronics manufacturing.
“Black Diamond’s acquisition of PIEPS reflects our ongoing strategy to assemble the best and brightest global companies that lead the charge in creating safer travel and backcountry adventure experiences,” said Peter Metcalf, president and CEO of Black Diamond. “Like Black Diamond Equipment, PIEPS is widely recognized among backcountry enthusiasts for its electronic innovation, premium quality, product reliability and practicality. This reputation has translated into their position as one of the global leaders in avalanche transceivers and has given PIEPS a leading market share in its core markets of Germany and Austria.
Founded in 2006, with roots dating back to 1972, PIEPS is widely recognized as an innovator and technology leader in alpine safety equipment. PIEPS offers a focused range of premium alpine performance products, including avalanche transceivers and probes, shovels, safety equipment, packs, and satellite-based devices for messaging, route tracking, and navigation. PIEPS is the only authorized European Iridium satellite network partner within the alpine sport and outdoor sectors.
PIEPS’ CEO Michael Schober commented: “The joint power of Black Diamond’s global operational resources and PIEPS’ leading alpine search and rescue technology creates a powerful platform for further product development. We believe that Black Diamond’s existing and planned electronic products will be supported with our extensive technical experience developing and manufacturing avalanche beacons and other electronic devices. In Black Diamond, we are confident that we have found our ideal match to cultivate our brand and look forward to continue delivering premium alpine performance products.
For its fiscal year ended March 31, 2012, PIEPS’ sales were €6.0 million or approximately $8.2 million.
Under the terms of a definitive agreement, Black Diamond will purchase PIEPS for €8.0 million or approximately $10.4 million in cash and will also assume approximately €2.1 million or $2.7 million in debt. Black Diamond has committed up to an additional estimated €2.3 million or approximately $3.0 million of contingent purchase price upon PIEPS’ achievement of certain sales targets between the closing of the transaction and March 31, 2015.
The transaction is expected to close on October 1, 2012 and is expected to be immediately accretive to Black Diamond earnings per share.
“PIEPS will be run as a semi-autonomous, discrete but closely linked Black Diamond brand that we believe will benefit directly from our operational infrastructure that is similarly tailored to highly engineered, life-dependent products,” continued Metcalf. “We also expect to grow PIEPS’ sales in those markets and geographies covered by Black Diamond’s global distribution platform. PIEPS has historically generated higher gross margin than a typical hard goods company and we expect that to have a positive impact on our overall average gross margin. PIEPS intellectual property, specifically its avalanche technology—including their paradigm-changing Global Finder—supports Black Diamond’s continuing focus on developing our electronic technology and applications product portfolio. We believe that all of these factors make PIEPS an ideal acquisition for Black Diamond as we advance our strategy to become the world’s most respected outdoor equipment and lifestyle company.”
Black Diamond Europe Managing Director, Christian Jaeggi observed, “In Europe the combination of Black Diamond with its highly respected, responsive, and centralized dealer services operation with the avalanche safety and transceiver leadership embodied in Pieps creates a truly synergistic opportunity that we believe will benefit not only both companies but retailers and consumers alike.”
All PIEPS products are designed and developed in its state-of-the-art facilities and are the result of close collaboration with top mountain guides and rescue teams, scientists and alpine security specialists, as well as major universities in Austria and Switzerland, such as the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research. PIEPS electronic products will continue to be manufactured by SEIDEL Elektronik, another member of the SEIDEL Group and a contract manufacturer of electronic products for over 15 years.
Renowned for its technological innovation, PIEPS is the recipient of many prestigious industry awards, including Gear of the Show at the summer 2012 Outdoor Retailer and the ISPO Outdoor Award in 2011. It also holds the distinctive ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9001 certification which defines the standard for quality management systems. - Blog post

Will Mountain Riders Alliance Will Mountain Riders Alliance Save The Future Of Skiing?
- From: ryandunfee
-
Description:
The Mountain Riders' Alliance, whose various efforts to launch their organization’s campaign for more affordable, authentic, and sustainable “Mountain Playgrounds” we’ve reported on at TetonGravity.com, has recently launched a crowd-funding campaign to raise money for administrative fees and business development funds for the general organization, as well as application fees for their Manitoba Mountain project on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula. Their campaign has raised $3,000 of its $10,000 goal with 11 days left in the campaign, and has a variety of perks available for donors.
The MRA recently made headlines by partnering with Maine’s Mt. Abram, which they believe will provide a blueprint for how the organization’s Mountain Playground model will work. The small Maine hill has a laid-back atmosphere, limited infrastructure, and has placed a priority on affordability and sustainability. Adult weekend day tickets are only $49 — $30 cheaper than down the street at Sunday River, which is owned and operated by Boyne Resorts. And Mt. Abram recently received the Golden Eagle Award for Environmental Excellence in the Small Resort category for their commitment to sustainability, having implemented a low energy snowmaking system, a wood pellet boiler for their base lodge, and is anticipating construction of a one-acre solar project that would make them the first ski area in the country to produce more energy than they consume. MRA hopes to share best practices with Mt. Abram and showcase the ski area as a living example of their working philosophy.
MRA’s campaign is named “Support the Future of Skiing,” as the organization believes view the current corporate resort model – high on infrastructure, real estate, non-skiing amenities, and energy – is putting skiing out of reach for many people while creating an experience that is distant from the true ideals of snowsports and ultimately, unsustainable. Besides the anti-corporate idealism, the Mountain Riders’ Alliance believes there is a real market for their vision both in the hardcore and casual skiing communities, but need funding help for initial legal, accounting, and security registration fees for their LLC, cash to develop their MRA membership model, and money to pay for land use and lease permit applications for their Manitoba Mountain project, which has the potential to offer access to 10,000 acres of Alaskan big-mountain skiing after the construction of three surface lifts.
Skiers and snowboarders who believe in MRA’s mission are encouraged to visit the fundraiser website at www.indiegogo.com/SupportTheFutureOfSkiing. Donor levels from a $10 “Groomed” donation with a thank-you shout-out on MRA’s Twitter to a $2,500 “Bottomless” donation that will provide the donor with an unlimited lifetime season pass to all current and future Mountain Playgrounds, an MRA t-shirt ski strap, and sticker set. The fundraiser ends on midnight, Sunday Sept. 9.

News: Icelantic, Discrete Take News: Icelantic, Discrete Take Top Honors at Sony Eye of the Condor
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
La Parva, Chile – After an intense week of competition, Sony Eye of the Condor concluded Friday in spectacular fashion at the first ever iF3- La Parva in Santiago, Chile. At a crowded Mallsport, Chris Bezamat and Team Discrete took top honors in the photography category while Katy-Robin Garton and Team Icelantic took home the award for “Best Film.” The “People’s Choice” award will be voted on this week through an online voting contest hosted by several websites.
On the photography side of things, Chris Bezamat bested photographers Jordan Ingmire, Roberta Rebori, and Juan Luis de Heckeren with his capturing of Chilean mountain culture and his unique use of flashes. This is Bezamat’s second year competing in Eye of the Condor, and his first year taking home the win.
“Last year’s winner, Juan Luis de Heckeren, is a really talented photographer so I was pretty nervous about what team Chile was going to have- plus we didn’t see them the entire week,” said Bezamat. “But, the portrait shot I had of Rachael (Burks) and the sunset shot of Parker (Cook) were pretty strong images, so I thought I had a pretty good chance, but I definitely wasn’t sure we had it by any means.”
The most heavily contested category, the film category, came down to a tight race between Team Discrete and Team Icelantic. In the end, John Roderick and Team Discrete’s film came up one vote short to Katy-Robin Garton and Team Icelantic’s heartfelt tribute to the mountains.
“Having people appreciate the video meant so much (to us) because of everything that went into it as a team,” said Team Icelantic editor and producer Katy-Robin Garton. “I’ve never experienced such an incredible group of women working together, and it showed, and that’s what carried (the film).”
