Located deep within the Neacola Mountains, Fantasy Camp served as TGR’s staging ground this spring. Whether nailing first descents or documenting them, the TGR crew kept busy filming for Way of Life. As we gear up for the film’s release, we’ll be filling you in on what went down in Alaska.

    Todd Ligar and Ian Mac look down on a nice little spine wall we dubbed NHL. The wall earned this name because lurking just under a thin dust of snow was a solid sheet of ice that stretched from wall to wall. It made for some exciting attempts at hanging on—and some hockey stops. 

    

    Ariel views like this allow for quickly spotting multiple zones. I often go back through my photos, looking for areas where lines and zones might have been hiding on the first look. 

    

    The Land of Ice—seeing glacial caps and massive glacial fields is quite a sight. It’s cool to see mountains being formed right before your eyes.

    Ian Mac speeds out of a massive line in an icy world. The challenge on lines like this is dealing with an exit plan. Large bergshrunds littered the bottom of this wall and the snow was firm underneath the top layer. Needless to say, control—and a plan—was critical to getting out safely.

    

    House-size chunks of ice and snow make up this peeling glacier.

    

    This looks like a calm perch, but the area below is loaded with spince walls that branch out in almost all directions. Here, Ian enjoys a moment of calm before the storm.

    Wind can be your enemy out in the alpine, turning glory pow into sastrugi moguls. Luckily, we found protected zones that held good snow through the end of our trip.

    Doug Brewer, a bush pilot, was the key to our success at Fantasy Camp. He flew us, our gear, our camp supplies, and fuel out in many different flights. In this photo, he is headed home after taking us on a recon flight in his Bush Hawk.

    

    GPS helps, but helicopters are fly-by-sight aircrafts.

    Are ski movies scripted?  There is a ton of planning and pre-production that goes into every ski film. At the beginning of the winter, a theme and a title are created, but as the peak of the season arrives, it becomes clear that Mother Nature is directing the film.
    
    This year, as it became obvious that the Lower 48 was going to have a drier than average winter and Alaska was on track to have a record snow year. TGR decided to head north and set up shop in AK to film The Dream Factory.

    Toward the end of our second trip to Girdwood, Sage Cattabriga-alosa sessioned this cornice. Here he is bringing around a huge 720 a few days before heading off to Colorado and taking third place at the 2012 Red Bull Cold Rush.

    Alaskans are a different breed.  It seems like everyone up there owns a snowmachine, a bush plane, or both.

    Tim Durtschi was a welcome addition to the TGR crew this year.  His laid-back attitude with an element of "disturbed artist" was a perfect match to the rest of the team. Not to mention he's a beast when it comes to getting shots.
    
    Thompson Pass, Valdez.  So much has changed since heli skiing was adopted in Alaska.  This place continues to be the ultimate spot to get the best run of your life. A visit to Valdez should be on every rider's bucket list.

    Driving around AK with sleds and hitting a bunch of different heli zones this winter wasn't all fun and games.

    We have to give props to all of the behind the scene's characters who made it possible for the TGR crew to spend the winter in Alaska. It's never easy to split up a dinner check after you're done eating.

    Next fall when we're all jonesing to ride powder, everyone will have a stand out memory of a day or a zone or a storm cycle from last winter.  Our time exploring the area overlooking Seward, Alaska on snowmobiles will be my stand out memory.  Sage cranking through some blower pow a couple of miles outside of Resurrection Bay.

    Oh, April.  Usually a glorious month stocked with empty late-season pow days, great stability, and awesome corn and park skiing.  It’s also the golden time for heli-skiing in Alaska, which is a particularly aggravating fact for the majority of us who have no access to the above-mentioned late season in this awful snow year.  With little more than mud left at our home mountains, we’re forced to suffer as videos and photos from our favorite pros and our lucky friends having the time of their lives in Alaska flood our Facebook feeds.  But fear not, snow-less masses, there is something you can do to fight back against the two key constituencies that are currently making that chip on your shoulder so infuriatingly large that you can’t even see around it to change lanes on the highway.

    If you’re using the popular social media app Instagram these days, you’re likely following your favorite pros as they capture photo after photo of all the amazing places they get to go to that you don’t.  You might have tolerated it in February, when they were chest-deep in Japan while you were at least getting turns, but now that your gear is in the closet and they’re in a helicopter chasing pow, you just can’t take it anymore.

    Not to worry!  Every smirking post glorifying heli-ski life and how sweet it is to ski miles and miles of untracked spines leaves the door open to respond with an equal amount of sarcasm and ridicule.

    Two years ago, Aaron Brill from Silverton Mountain Guides sent us six photos of big rowdy Alaskan spines. He had been diverted from the Tordrillo Mountains when Mount Redoubt began spewing ash all over the range. His diversion led him down a long winding road to the Knik River Lodge, where he spent that spring. I immediately forwarded the shots to the TGR athletes and crew and asked them what they thought. In a matter of minutes my inbox was filling up with responses indicating everyone’s excitement to go explore a new area. We immediately began planning a trip there the next winter with the help of Brill. The plan was to spend the spring of 2011 at the Knik River Lodge and ride a bunch of unridden lines deep in the Northern Chugach.
    
    The winter of 2010-2011 was one of the worst recorded snowfalls in the history of Alaska.  Almost ninety days of high pressure left the Chugach high and dry and we ended up shifting our spring trip to Juneau.
    
    The winter of 2012 has been a whole different story. This year Alaska has been smashing all of its historical snowfall records. We put the Knik / Northern Chugach trip back on the table. We drove up the long winding dirt road to the Knik River Lodge, which sits at the end of the road. The lodge is made up of fifteen nice cabins and a European-style dinner Yurt. Our heli sits fifty yards from our cabins.  The riders on the first half of the trip are Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Dash Longe, Seth Morrison, and Daron Rahlves. We are truly in The Dream Factory.
    
    We hooked up with Chugach legend Chuck McMahon for a recon flight to start mapping out our goals for the spring. Chuck was the first person to land skiers on Thompson Pass in the late 1980s. Chuck is a true Alaskan bush pilot and one of the best snow plane pilots we have ever met. Sage and Chuck went for a long recon and brought home a plethora of incredible photos that would become our focus over the next five weeks.
    
    After a few days of snow assessment things have begun to come together. We have been getting into some big classic AK spines. Dash and Sage have been bringing the freestyle game into the mix, while Rahlves and Morrison bring a ferocious style of charging to these big peaks. The weather forecast looks good for a while. We will check back in a week or so with updates from this magical place.

    The Knik River Lodge sits at the end of a long winding road up the Knik River Valley.

    Daron Rahlves and Dash Longe arrive at the Knik River Lodge, our home for the next five weeks.

    The lodge is located right in the thick of the Northern Chugach. We stay in these cool little cabins.

    Sage Cattabriga-Alosa meets up with Chuck McMahon. Chuck was the first ski plane pilot to land skiers in Valdez in the late 80s. He was looking to get back to his roots, so he flew in to scout new terrain in the Northern Chugach.

    Once the scout was done, it was time to get in the heli and get some riding in.

    The Further crew migrated to Anchorage on Wednesday and the next day drove to Chitna to meet up with legendary bush pilot Paul Claus. Paul loaded us up in his Garrett Powered Turbine Otter and shuttled us into one of the most magical places I have ever been: The Ultima Thule Lodge in the Wrangell St. Elias National Park. Paul and his family have carved out the ultimate wilderness lodge in the heart of the largest protected wilderness on earth. The sights along the way were jaw dropping as Paul educated us on the headset. Upon arrival we ran into Andrew McLean and mountain legend Ruedi Homberger, who had just returned from a day of incredible skiing with Paul. We must be in the right place. Paul's daughter Ellie, the youngest person ever to complete the Iditarod at 18 years old in 2004, gave us a tour of the beautiful homestead. After a backcountry sauna and good night sleep the weather looked good for a recon flight out to the Bagley Icefield. Stay tuned.

    Men's Ski John Bochenek wins $2000 at Rahlves' Ban...

    

    Nuking winds lowered the start for The Eagle Bowl Banzai taking out the GNAR upper pitch off The Wall. A lower bush league start with cattle fence stakes and a voice command start brought back the grass roots feeling of my first thoughts of what the Banzai is all about. The shortened course made for close battles to the finish line. It's hard for me to sit back and watch all the fun these guys are having, but I do get some skiing in and run a Contour GPS to capture the action for all of you. In the Men's Ski Final it came down to Alpine winner Markus Caston and 4th place Jesse Maddex against new comers Craig Garbiel and John Bocheneck. If Jesse stayed on his feet (sorry..ha,ha,ha can't help it) out of the start I might have had a better view of the Markus and Craig scuffle. I did get a glimpse of the explosion. It was a scrap to the finish for Craig who came in 2nd behind John. Jesse's never give up approach landed him in third and is now ranked 2nd in Overall Rahlves' Banzai Tour points and a chance at $3,500 for the overall title. Caston leads the tour going into the final round at Sugar Bowl March 12-13.1st Bocheneck $2000, a Contour GPS and Suunto CORE - 2nd Craig Garbiel $1000 and Giro Revolver helmet - 3rd Jesse Maddex $750 and Giro Station goggle - 4th Markus Caston $500 and Wend Wax. The Men's Snowboard overall race is the tighest with a tie for 1st. Jayson Hale winner from Kirkwood and Sylvain Duclos our Alpine winner are just 10 points ahead of Matt Clark. If Matt wins the Silver Belt Banzai he will take the overall and $3,000. Women's Ski also has a tie for 1st. My sister Shannon and Shelly Robertson are at the top with 160 points fighting for $2,500. Women's Snowboard Marge Cossettini and Alison Martin tie for 1st at 100 points each. The 3rd and final round will have plenty of intensity for the win and overall titles. To top it off I'll be taking on Markus Caston, John Bocheneck and the winner from the Silver Belt Banzai in one final run for $10,000 winner takes all. www.rahlvesbanzai.com

    GLACIER BAY NATIONAL PARK, Alaska.  For sixteen years I have made an annual pilgrimage to Alaska every spring for 4 to 7 weeks.  On average I spend more days in Alaska then my home mountain range and it has become a second home to me.  Alaska has always been the place I judge my snowboarding. Everything else leading up to it is just a warm up.  No matter how epic my winter has been once I hit Alaska it all seems irrelevant.

    The quest has always been to ride the best mountains I could find and to always ride new terrain.  It started in Valdez 16 years ago and as new lines dried up there the search led me Girdwood, Skagway, Haines, Tulsequa and the Tordrillo Mountains.  A long the way I learned what ranges are holding the goods a lot about what combination of conditions is needed to create the real trophies lines.  This knowledge is what has directed me into the Fairweather Range 65 miles outside of Haines.  It is hands down the most impressive range I have come across and has captured my imagination and has motivated me more then any other range in the world.

    On April 4th trusted bush pilot Drake and I lifted off from Haines in search for a place I could call home for a month.  Setting out to find a base camp is one of the more daunting tasks I have ever done.  You can scour maps all you want but once you are up in the air none of that matters.  Time is limited because we are so far from town that there is not a lot of extra fuel to explore before the plane needs to go back for fuel.  In the plane was all my gear and ten days of food and fuel incase the weather came in and the rest of the group would not be able to meet me. Tom Burt, Ryland Bell, Josh Dirksen, Lucas Debari, Camera men Chris Edmands, Garry Pendygrass, And Seth Lightcap stayed back until I had made the call.

    We are approaching the general area that I saw from across the way last year and had been looking closely on the maps.

    

    The terrain was amazing but a ton of the outruns were littered with crevasses and cornice covered ridges making a lot of the faces unridable.

    

    This is our airport and our home. I hardly looked at the zone before declaring it good to go but I had seen what I needed to on the first pass;  dark white North faces with clean out runs at the right elevation (above 3000 ft) and surrounded by tons of glaciers.   So with low fuel and in and out clouds I told Drake to set it down if he could. With in ten minutes of first seeing the zone I was now on the ground, by myself, and 65 miles away from the closest person.  Even though there was a lot of work to do like pack a runway or build tent platforms I could not stop drooling over our new home.

     

    

    

    

    Mapping out an area takes a ton of work.  Everything is new.  Everything needs to be analysed, dissected and discussed.  We start with the smallest and safest lines and work up from there.  Our first mission was to  “Town Hill” the closest and safest line in our world.  We are getting ready to put Tom Burt on belay to go dig a pit on the North Face.
