    • Description:

      Ski Arpa base lodge
Salt Lake City, Utah - The North Face Chilean Freeskiing Championships hosted by Ski Arpa, previously scheduled August 22-26, 2012, has been canceled due to unsuitable snow conditions at the designated venue. As a substitute, The North Face Chile will host athletes and competition officials for “Los Andes Down South,” a weeklong experience in Patagonia including ski-touring volcanoes, soaking in hot springs and enjoying Chilean culture.

“We are really bummed Mother Nature is not cooperating this season by providing the conditions we need to host a safe Freeride World Tour (FWT) four-star event at Ski Arpa,” said Ski Arpa Marketing Director Brian Pearson. “We look forward to a continued partnership with FWT and hosting a tour event in 2013.”

The North Face Chile, in partnership with Mountain Sports International, Inc. (MSI), will continue to support top freeriders' pursuits of endless winter by hosting a week of skiing in Chile. Athletes will travel to Antillanca in southern Chile for backcountry skiing around the Puyehue Volcano Zone. The region is one of the snowiest areas of the country and is expecting as much as 40 centimeters (15.75 inches) of snow in the coming days.

"This new plan focuses on the camaraderie and passion for winter that are such key elements of our sport," said FWT Event Director Bryan Barlow of Mountain Sports International. "We are disappointed by the cancellation but sometimes that's how the winter plays out. We need to provide covered venues for the athletes and the central Andes just did not produce in time."

Athletes are urged to contact Julia Jimmerson Mountain Sports International marketing coordinator at jjimmerson@mtsports.com for more information on The North Face Chilean Freeskiing Championships cancellation and secondary plan.

  • News: Swatch Skiers Cup Return News: Swatch Skiers Cup Returns To Valle Nevado September 1-9, 2012

    • From: TetonGravityResearch
    • Description:

      Swatch Skiers Cup

Santiago, Chile – This September 1-9 the Swatch Skiers Cup will return to Valle Nevado, Chile, for a great battle between Team Americas and defending champions Team Europe. After a successful inaugural edition in 2011, 16 of the best skiers in the world will once again face off on the snow-clad peaks of the Chilean Andes. With exciting new riders on each team plus returning favorites, the stage is set for another historic competition!

The Swatch Skiers Cup is a unique team-format competition with eight riders each comprising Team Europe and Team Americas. During the two days of competition riders battle it out in one-on-one heats with the best run gaining a point for their team. When the event comes to a close, the team with the most points wins, and the trophy will go to the winning continent until the battle is reignited next year.

"Last year's Swatch Skiers Cup was really exciting - every match was closely-fought. This year [we] will do everything we can to defend our victory and keep the trophy in our hands," claimed Team Europe captain and Swatch Proteam member Sverre Liliequist of Sweden.

Two epic days make up the event. For the Big Mountain freeride day the athletes are taken to a peak deep in the wild interior of the Andes where they'll lay down lines that have never before been ridden. The Backcountry Slopestyle competition goes down in the accessible off-piste terrain of Valle Nevado where the riders will showcase their best freestyle skills on a series of jumps designed and built by legendary terrain park shaper, David Ny.

Thanks to its creative format, the Swatch Skiers Cup showcases skiing's progression across a broad range of styles. "The [Swatch] Skiers Cup is a great example of how skiers from different backgrounds can get together with a common passion for skiing and create a great event," said Team Americas captain Mark Abma.

With an elite roster of athletes, a nine-day weather window, and the support of Swatch and Valle Nevado, the event has explosive potential. "The Swatch Skiers Cup has everything we love about action sports - the thrill of an all-out competition, the audacity to challenge nature, and the courage to push personal performance to the limits," said Marco Vaccari, Head of Marketing International Swatch.

  • News: Icelantic, Discrete Take News: Icelantic, Discrete Take Top Honors at Sony Eye of the Condor

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

La Parva, Chile – After an intense week of competition, Sony Eye of the Condor concluded Friday in spectacular fashion at the first ever iF3- La Parva in Santiago, Chile. At a crowded Mallsport, Chris Bezamat and Team Discrete took top honors in the photography category while Katy-Robin Garton and Team Icelantic took home the award for “Best Film.” The “People’s Choice” award will be voted on this week through an online voting contest hosted by several websites.

On the photography side of things, Chris Bezamat bested photographers Jordan Ingmire, Roberta Rebori, and Juan Luis de Heckeren with his capturing of Chilean mountain culture and his unique use of flashes. This is Bezamat’s second year competing in Eye of the Condor, and his first year taking home the win.

“Last year’s winner, Juan Luis de Heckeren, is a really talented photographer so I was pretty nervous about what team Chile was going to have- plus we didn’t see them the entire week,” said Bezamat. “But, the portrait shot I had of Rachael (Burks) and the sunset shot of Parker (Cook) were pretty strong images, so I thought I had a pretty good chance, but I definitely wasn’t sure we had it by any means.”

The most heavily contested category, the film category, came down to a tight race between Team Discrete and Team Icelantic. In the end, John Roderick and Team Discrete’s film came up one vote short to Katy-Robin Garton and Team Icelantic’s heartfelt tribute to the mountains.

“Having people appreciate the video meant so much (to us) because of everything that went into it as a team,” said Team Icelantic editor and producer Katy-Robin Garton. “I’ve never experienced such an incredible group of women working together, and it showed, and that’s what carried (the film).”

      Freeride World Tour Qualifiers

Salt Lake City, USA – As announced last week, the Freeride World Tour, the Freeskiing World Tour and The North Face Masters of Snowboarding have now joined forces in a unified tour named the Swatch Freeride World Tour By The North Face. On the qualifier level, all freeride events around the globe will be united into one worldwide Freeride World Qualifier tour, with events ranked from 1 to 4. Riders will be able to compete anywhere they want, according to their place on the unified world qualifier seeding list.

      Qualification:

To qualify for the 2014 Freeride World Tour, FWQ riders will have to be in the top four from their region for ski men, in the top three from their region for ski women and snowboard men, and to be first from their region for snowboard women.

      Regions:

The freeride world will be split in two regions:
      Region 1: Europe, Asia, Oceania
Region 2: Canada, USA, Chile, Argentina

      Ranking list:

There will be one FWQ ranking, taking the best three results of each rider. The ranking list starts at zero every new season.

      Seeding list:

The seeding list uses the best three results of each rider during the last 52 weeks. The seeding list is actualized every week. The detailed rules can be found here.

      Judging:

The first events of the season will be judged according to last year's Freeride World Tour rules for the New Zealand events, and according to last year's Freeskiing World Tour rules for Chile. A new, unified judging system will be implemented for the northern hemisphere FWQ and FWT events.

      Calendar:

August 22-27: FWQ 4*, Ski Only, The North Face Chilean Freeskiing Championships, Chile, Ski Arpa

This competition will be a Four-Star event, associated with the Freeride World Tour and a critical opportunity for up and coming athletes to earn points toward their worldwide ranking.

With a $10,000 prize purse, the open event will attract the world’s top freeskiers from around the globe to compete at a backcountry venue only accessible by snowcat and touring.

August 22-27: FWQ 2*, K2 Big Mountain Chill Series, New Zealand, Craigieburn and Mt. Olympus

These events are as much about the athletes as they are the mountain, which makes them local favorites amongst competitors. The mountains just so happen to be freeride meccas and a breeding ground for so many of New Zealand’s top big-mountain skiers and snowboarders.

Both events are Two-Star Freeride World Tour Qualifiers (FWQ) and have $5000 prize pool per event. New terrain is on offer given good conditions and there is already interest from a strong collection of local and international riders. The K2 Big Mtn CHILL Series starts at Mt Olympus on the August 22 and moves to Craigieburn from August 24-26. Check the 2011 videos here and here

August 30 – September 2: FWQ 2*, Black Diamond Big Mountain Chill Series, New Zealand, Temple Basin.
      Check the 2011 video here.

September 3 – 8: FWQ 3*, Ski Only, The North Face Big Montain New Zealand Freeski Open, New Zealand, The Remarkables and Trebelcone

Registration has officially opened for the Big Mountain contest of The North Face Freeski Open of New Zealand. A total prize pool of $42,000NZ spread across the three disciplines will certainly entice many international and local freeskiers to sign up to compete at this World Class event.

After a short delay, the registration for the Big Mountain and Three-Star Freeride World Qualifier event is open for all Freeriders looking to shred the gnar in New Zealand.

This is the second year in a row that both the Big Mountain Qualifier and the Finals have been held at The Remarkables, a ski resort close to picturesque Queenstown.

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

La Parva, Chile – Top skiers and industry leaders are scheduled to arrive in La Parva this week for the second annual Sony Eye of the Condor, a week-long film and photography contest. Set in the heart of the Andes, La Parva will play host to athletes including JT Holmes, Julian Carr, Rachel Burks and Drew Tabke, and industry leaders including Chris Davenport, Adam Clark, and Ingrid Backstrom.

“The Eye of the Condor format is full-throttle,” says professional skier JT Holmes. “It's not a long period of time and the competition is fierce, so you have to hustle to get exciting shots, but with the terrain available it all works out. I tend to need a week to decompress after the event.”

While the film and photography competition will be the centerpiece of the event, a collection of industry leaders will also provide a forum for broader discussion during the Eye of the Condor Actions Sports Symposium. Industry leaders such as Chris Davenport, Dave Fields and Julian Carr will offer their insights on the roll that action and adventure sports play in the world at large.

“Yes, Eye of the Condor is about teams producing the best short film and photography portfolio, but it’s also a celebration of skiing and mountain culture,” says La Parva Director of Corporate Sales and Marketing Rodrigo Medina. “It’s a perfect way to share Chilean ski culture with the rest of the world.”

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

Dubsatch Collective at Ski La ParvaMembers of Dubsatch Collective blast through powder in 2011 at Ski La Parva in Chile during the Eye Of The Condor film and photo competition.

SANTIAGO, CHILE — After an extremely successful event in 2011, Ski La Parva is pleased to announce the return of Sony Eye of the Condor — a weeklong film and photo competition set in the Andes. Presented by Sony, Subaru Chile and Delta Airlines, Sony Eye of the Condor 2 will showcase elite athletes and photographers from around the world from July 27 to August 4, 2012. A new partnership with IF3 will provide increased media distribution for teams and brands, as well as the first ever IF3 Film Festival La Parva/Chile in Santiago. An all-star panel of judges — including Ingrid Backstrom and Chris Davenport — and athletes including the K2 Factory Team — will surely set a high benchmark for what’s to come in the 2012/2013 season.

“With the direction of the sport focusing on digital media and quality of production, we have created a venue for athletes and brands to showcase their highest quality work in a cultivating environment,” says Ski La Parva’s Director of Corporate Sales and Marketing Rodrigo Medina. “Not only does Sony Eye of the Condor provide a great outlet for competitors, the laid back Chilean atmosphere provides a great platform for industry leaders to discuss the state of the sport.”

In addition to the competition, which will award cash prizes to the best video and photography portfolio, Sony Eye of the Condor will support local arts, with a photography exhibition showcasing local talent. The event will also provide a forum for broader discussion with seminars, photo retrospectives and other events that seek to examine the roll that action sports and photography play in society at large.

“The Eye of the Condor is such an awesome event because it celebrates the creativity in skiing; it's really open to interpretation and gives teams the freedom to show how much fun skiing is in whichever way they choose.” Says judge Ingrid Backstrom. “Plus to have the film and photos set against such an insane backdrop way up in the Andes guarantees some truly stunning imagery”

The week of festivities will culminate in the booming metropolis of Santiago de Chile at the first annual IF3 La Parva/Chile. The one night film festival will celebrate the global Freeskiing film community, complete with athlete autograph sessions, film screenings, vendors, and live music. The winning films and photos from Sony Eye of The Condor will be showcased around the globe at IF3 International Film Festivals, including Montreal, Quebec; Annecy France; and Innsbruck Austria. “We are extremely excited about our new partnership with IF3, we feel it’s going to show the international community the beauty and uniqueness of the Chilean ski community,” says Medina.

“The Eye of the Condor competition is an amazing event” says Team Discrete (2011 EOTC People’s Choice Award) member and 2012 Red Bull Cold Rush Champion Rachel Burks  “It's rad, because all the teams are staying in the same area, dining together, running into each other on the slopes — it’s the perfect competition atmosphere.”

  • Matt Philippi Helps Maras, Per Matt Philippi Helps Maras, Peru, With The FullCircle Project

    • From: ryandunfee
    • Description:

After their inaugural ski and service trip to Concepción, Chile in 2010 to help with disaster relief following the country’s devastating earthquake, The FullCircle Project crew, consisting of athletes Matt Philippi, Jack Tolan and Taylor Felton, cinematographer Aidan Haley, Project Director Caleb Braley, and photographer Michael Brown, headed back to South America.  This time their service efforts led them to the small indigenous community of Maras, Peru high in the Andes to help replant trees for an apple orchard.  We caught up with Matt Philippi after the release of their second film this past week.

Tetongravity.com: You guys were doing work in Chile before to help after the earthquake.  How did you decide to switch locations to Peru, how did you find and identify the project, and what was the journey like getting there?

Matt Philippi: They Chile project was made possible via personal connection I had made in the region on a couple of ski trips.  After the first FullCircle Project, I met Caleb Braley, who is now FCP’s Service Project Director.  Caleb has been working in South and Central America for many years on different service projects.  He had the connections to make the Peru project a reality... and he is lining up the Ecuador project for this upcoming year.

TGR: How were you guys received by the people?  Given how tight and small the communities are, were there any issues with gaining the people’s trust, and what did they think your intentions were?

Philippi: In Peru, we were warmly welcomed and the community was awesome toward us during our stay.  We were working long days in the field and the community was aware of the effort were putting in.  I believe that was a factor that played into people trusting us.

Matt Philippi In PeruMatt Philippi and Jack Tolan get to work.

TGR: What were that people’s impressions of skiing and relation to the mountains that you can see in the background?  What were the mountains for them and did that change your feelings about what they mean to you?

Philippi: The mountaintops are very spiritual places for the people of Maras, and for other communities with indigenous ancestry.  Their spiritual belief system is based around Apus, which are spiritual deities that reside on the tops of mountains.  The Apus hold the snowpack and glaciers, and then release the waters down to the people in order to grow crops and live.  During the blessing ceremony of the orchard we planted, the locals gave thanks to each mountaintop that surrounded us, in hope that the Apus would release their water down to the people.

That belief system definitely resonated with the FCP whole crew.  As skiers and snowboarders, the tops of mountains are very special places for us.  We strive to get to the tops, but we also have a strong respect for the tops these peaks, as they mountains (or the Apus) can kill you in an instant.

TGR: Being a skier from a Western country and rolling around all these poorer places in South America can really give you a drastic perspective on how privileged we are to do what we do.  Did you get that same impression and have you ever gotten a negative response from any locals about your intentions or your lifestyle?

Philippi: I think that, in general, travelling and learning about our world gives one a perspective otherwise unobtainable without leaving home. These projects deepened my understanding of just how lucky I am.  Travelling to Chile and seeing the destruction from the tsunami and quake helped me realize how fragile life can be and how powerful Mother Nature really is.  We are truly at her mercy.  And then seeing how selfless the Chilean people can be in their efforts to give back and help was inspiring.

From the people of Maras, Peru, I was able to witness the legacy of Spanish colonialism.  The town of Maras is mostly of indigenous ancestry, Native American, and they have really been on their own, without the support of the central government.  These people have been fighting for decades to get property rights to their land, fighting for rights to the salt mine on their land, fighting for support on an aqueduct to keep the fields alive (and therefore the town as well).  The people of Maras have come such an incredible long way in the last 50 years, since the end of the hacienda system to today… it is inspiring, and it makes the problems that I face in my day to day seem silly and therefore much easier to overcome.

We have never really had a negative response from the people who took the time to speak with us, in Chile or Peru.  People across the globe can tell when your intentions are good and your vibe is positive.

The Full Circle Project CrewThe Full Cricle Crew in Maras, Peru.

TGR: Why was Maras mostly deforested?  What is the hope of the region and people for these fruit trees?

Philippi: Much of the forest that was in the region has been used for construction, wood burning, and other basic needs.  The issue is that there isn’t the funding to plant more trees to replace the ones being used.

Just 5 years ago, the town of Maras finished an aqueduct that was 30 years in the making.  The town making a huge effort to replace the trees used over the years.  Having trees in the ground helps keep the quality of the soil up, prevents erosion, and produces food that the town can both eat and sell at market.

TGR: What did you guys get done, who’d you work with, and what did you take away from that project?

Philippi: We planted around 600 trees, they were mostly apple trees, but the border of the orchard was lined with Pine trees to help protect the orchard from dust and the gnarly climate.

TGR: Skiing in South America is a wild experience.  The terrain is incredible, yet in most places you (the foreigner) have more gear, skill, and experience than the locals.  It’s a very different experience than going to a place like Europe where a strong ski culture exists.  What do you feel like you’ve gained, personally and in your skiing, from going down south?

Philippi: Skiing in South America is an awesome experience. The mountains are beautiful, different, rocky, and usually the snowpack is quite stable (knock on wood). Trying to film a ski segment, however, is quite a challenge.  They simply don’t have the consistency of snow that we enjoy in Jackson, Wyoming.   The mountains are mostly above tree level and the snow is exposed to a harsh climate.

I have learned to be creative in the mountains and to make the most of what is available.  In Chile in 2010, we had a really deep base, but no fresh snow, so we built a ton of jumps and utilized terrain park-like transitions.  In Argentina, in 2011, we had a tiny base (2 feet deep), we were dodging rocks (and hitting rocks).  We looked up to the tops of the mountains to find chutes and patches of mountain that were filled in enough to ski.  But both segments came out fine in the end.  All we had to do was be in the mountains everyday working our asses off.

TGR: In Solitaire, the Sweetgrass crew focused a lot on the difficulties, the hateful wind, the changing conditions, the logistic difficulties of skiing in South America.  They gave you this strong feeling of always fighting uphill and the desperation and struggle that is uniquely part of the South American ski experience.  Have you felt the same way about your time skiing there?

Philippi: I touched on this in the above question.  Yes, while you are trying to film a segment it is a challenge.  But, what is important to us at The FullCircle Project, is being thankful and stoked to be in the mountains.  At the completion of our volunteer project, we find ourselves incredibly happy to be skiing these amazing mountains and having shared our experience with inspiring people who call the Andes home.  Snow conditions really aren’t that big of deal after witnessing the struggles of those less fortunate than you.

Freeskiing World Tour, Freeride World Tour Partner
World Tours join for first combined stop of the Swatch Freeride & Freeskiing World Tour Jan. 4-11 in Revelstoke, British Columbia.

Snowboarding added to Revelstoke with athletes from the Freeride World Tour and The North Face Masters.

Salt Lake City, Utah – North American-based Subaru Freeskiing World Tour and European-based Swatch Freeride World Tour have joined to establish a new global competitive big mountain freeskiing and snowboarding structure, with stops stretching from Revelstoke, British Columbia, to Verbier, Switzerland. The move comes after years of both tours experiencing incredible growth in both athlete and sponsorship participation.

“This is the natural next step in the evolution of a long-term partnership between both tours,” said Adam Comey, president of Salt Lake City-based Mountain Sports International, the company that owns the Freeskiing World Tour. “This is a global sport with a common culture and passion for big mountain riding and a global strategy will best serve the athletes, events, and tour sponsors.”

Freeride World Tour organizers are in complete agreement.

“The 2012 season will be the next step in globalizing freeride,” said Nicholas Hale Woods, founder of the Swatch Freeride World Tour.  “We’re extremely pleased to co-organize an event together with MSI in Revelstoke in 2012, and we’ will continue working ever closer with MSI to further align our events and activities in 2013.”

In 2012, the tours will operate independently as they have in the past, with a joint event in Revelstoke, British Columbia, in January, followed by top Subaru Freeskiing World Tour and The North Face Masters athletes joining the Freeride athletes again at season’s end in Verbier, Switzerland, for the Swatch Verbier Extreme, featuring a $32,000 prize purse.

“Although Revelstoke Mountain Resort is expanding into the family market, our heart and soul is big mountain skiing and riding,” said Revelstoke Mountain Resort Chief Operating Officer, Rod Kessler. “The combination of the Swatch Freeride Tour and the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour marks a historic event amongst the Snow Sports industry. Revelstoke Mountain Resort and the Revelstoke Accommodation Association is excited to host the world’s top big mountain ski and snowboard athletes in January 2012. Our goal is to deliver an unforgettable experience to both athletes and guests alike, while showcasing Revelstoke’s unparalleled terrain, snow conditions, and hospitality.”

In addition to event collaboration, the two tours will also follow a unified global event tier and points system, now giving athletes the chance to enter in small, open events that feed directly to the world’s biggest freeskiing championships. Events will be grouped as 5-Star, 4-Star, or 3-Star categories: 5-star events will include Freeskiing World Tour and Freeride World Tour main events. 4-Star events will include World Tour Qualifiers and long-standing regional events such as Taos and Red Mountain.  3-Star events include competitions with big, open fields, first-time competitors, and lower prize money such as the Ski the East Tour.

The official 2011-12 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour season started this summer in Las Lenas at the Argentinean Freeskiing Championships (Stop #1), then moved to Ski Arpa in Los Andes at the Chilean Freeskiing Championships (Stop #2). The Swatch Freeride & Freeskiing World Tour Revelstoke 2012, Jan 4-11, will be Stop #3 on the Subaru FWT. Twenty-five pre-qualified Freeskiing World Tour athletes will join 25 pre-qualified Freeride World Tour athletes. Fifteen open spots are up for grabs in the qualifier event boasting upwards of 80 freeskiing athletes. Twelve snowboarding athletes from The North Face Masters will join 12 riders from the Freeride World Tour for the snowboarding category of the event.

“By partnering with the Freeride World Tour we are going to make it more compelling for fans around the world to follow both tours and other independent stops, as their favorite athletes gain points.  The event structure and points system will create a clear path and added exposure for all aspiring big mountain skiers and snowboarders,” said FWT event director Bryan Barlow. “The strategy for both tours has always been to grow the sport and keep it moving in the right direction, and I am looking forward to developing our partnership and events alike.”

The Subaru Freeskiing World Tour will continue on to Crested Butte, Colorado, Kirkwood, California, and Snowbird, Utah. An overall Subaru Freeskiing World Tour Champion will be crowned at the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour Championships at Snowbird.

Ski Arpa Base Lodge in Chile

In 1982, during a flight over the Andes from Mendoza, Argentina, to Santiago, Chile, Anton Sponar spotted something that caught his eye. It was a bad drought year in the central cordillera of the Andes, but from the plane Sponar spotted a swath of peaks and bowls blanketed in snow.

Sponar, who goes by Toni, inquired about the land and discovered it was for sale for $5,000 — the exact amount of money the Austrian-born, Aspen, Colo.-based ski instructor had saved. It was an opportunity he couldn’t refuse — a purchase that ultimately became Ski Arpa, the only cat-skiing operation on the continent.

The location posed unique challenges to building your run-of-the-mill ski resort, beginning with “GRINGO GO HOME” signs that appeared all along the road up to Sponar’s mountains. Local farmers put them up in fear they would not be able to graze their animals on the land over the summer, as they had traditionally done. But Sponar settled the issue by writing grazing rights into the land titles.

      Ski Arpa's Snowcat

After Sponar bought the land, he built a rope tow and an A-frame base lodge in ’83. But just a year later, 30 feet of snow fell in four days, causing an avalanche that destroyed the A-frame and blasted the lift with such force that the remnants were never found.

Hard work and long distances forced Sponar to take a break from the project. He went on to raise his family in America until 1999. That year, turning back to his dream, he hired local Chileans to build a couple of small stone buildings nearly flush to the hillside for security against avalanches.

Sponar again used his savings to buy a used snowcat and hired a mechanic in the nearest town — Los Andes — to fix it up. Noting the keen interest in cat-skiing, he shortly got his hands on another used Pisten Bully snowcat with help from some of his clients in Aspen.

      Skiing in Ski Arpa, slash

Ski Arpa was finally coming together in its own special way: It had uphill transport and a base area for skiers to get geared up and later, après. Sponar’s son Anton, an Aspen-based ski guide, became a part of it, too.

Publicity, however, was an obstacle. No one knew the ski area existed.

Then Brian Pearson of Santiago Adventures saw opportunity and offered to help put the word out about the new operation. The American expat started bringing skiers to mountain — not an easy task.

A steep, gnarly, switch backing, rock-strewn, seemingly never-ending dirt road is the only way to Ski Arpa. The access road just might be one of the toughest lines on the mountain.

      Skiing in Ski Arpa

Over the last few years, skiers, photographers and film crews have shown up to ride. It’s $225 for four 3,000-vertical foot snowcat runs with a guide and $30 per additional run. Most recently, Ski Arpa hosted the Chilean Freeskiing Championships, the second stop of the 2011-12 Freeskiing World Tour.

In addition to the snowcats, Ski Arpa lets you tour all over the mountain on your own. You can stay in the recently built refugio — which operates in a bring-your-own-food-beer-sleeping-bag-style — for $35 a night. Some of the massive, powder-filled terrain is for touring only, so you are not fighting for lines with the snowcat — not a bad deal, not at all.

After ten years and rising visibility in the ski world, the Ski Arpa crew is looking toward the future. The mountain plans to bring slightly improved on-hill lodging and another snow cat.

“We don’t totally plan to stay very small,” Sponar said. “But until then, we are OK with staying the course with what we are doing.”

  • News: Team Europe Wins Swatch News: Team Europe Wins Swatch Skiers Cup In Chile

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

      September 12, 2011

VALLE NEVADO, CHILE — Team Europe clinched the Swatch Skiers Cup on Saturday with a final score of 14–10 at the inaugural freeski competition high in the Chilean Andes. In Saturday’s showdown on the Backcountry Slopestyle course, Team Europe held its own against the favored strength of Team Americas freestylers and it was Kaj Zackrisson and his band of seven riders that held the Swatch Skiers Cup triumphantly aloft at the end of the day.

In two rounds of eight head-to-head duels, Team Americas would showcase its unrivaled freestyle strength on the two large features shaped by David Ny, and the varied natural hits, cliffs and powder landings of the Backcountry Slopestyle. The panel of three international judges awarded a single point to the winner of each man-to-man heat.

Coming off the Big Mountain segment of the event Monday trailing 2-6, Team Americas’ riders were pressed in the Backcountry Slopestyle discipline to reverse their deficit. Powered by the talents of Rory Bushfield (CAN) and Dylan Hood (USA), they delivered their best. Rory simply stomped everything he threw, though his top run would include a 360 over the entry hip, a cork-720 off the kicker, a right-side 360 off a medium-sized drop and finish with a 180 nosetap off a rolling 10-meter drop.

Switzerland’s Nicolas Vuignier, his first-round rival, answered with one of the most stylish cab-540’s of the day. Most impressive in the first round was the explosive energy of Markus Eder’s (ITA) cab 900 mute and switch 540 revert.

A series of spills by Team Americas would limit their gains, though, and both teams finished the first round with an additional four points, making it 10-6 for Team Europe.

Matt Margetts Team Americas Swatch Skiers Cup

Round two would see Henrik Windstedt (SWE) charge to the finish with solid, controlled skiing, winning a total of two points today for Team Europe. Co-founder of the event and big mountain specialist, Sverre Liliequist (SWE) would display a whole new side with a misty 720 and a stomped backflip.
Team Americas refused to be outshined , however and equalized the round yet again with Dylan Hood’s (USA) enormous cork 720 and switch tricks around the venue.

Captain of Team Europe, Kaj Zackrisson (SWE) also pushed his limits today to land both left and right 360’s — a first in his long career as a freeskier — after brief instruction from young compadre Nicolas Vuignier (SUI) the previous day.

Team Americas’ Josh Bibby (CAN) would win both his runs, but the favored talents of teammates Dana Flahr (CAN) and James Heim (CAN) would not shine in the showdown today.

Kaj Zackrisson Team Europe Swatch Skiers Cup

In the end, Europe would gain enough points by the third duel in the second round to win the event. The athletes agreed that after such an experience in Chile, they would certainly support another Swatch Skiers Cup.

“I think it’s the best spirit I have ever seen in a contest,“ Richard Permin, of France, said.

Team Americas Captain Mark Abma, of Canada, was very impressed with the inaugural Swatch Skiers Cup.

“I think this has been a success just because of its team feel, and the camaraderie that comes from it. We have so many contests these days that are individually focused, that to create a team focus is really a funky twist. These days we just need something different and [Kaj and Sverre] stepped-up to it.”

      August 21, 2011

      From Mountain Sports International:

      Words: Keith Carlsen/MSI

VALLE EL ARPA, CHILE — Three days ago, the 25-minute 4x4 road to Ski Arpa was covered in a snow-dirt soup. Now, after the finals of The North Face Chilean Freeskiing Championships, it’s paved with some of the best ski lines the remote South American cat skiing operation has ever witnessed. Freeskiing’s elite gathered this week in Los Andes, Chile, and made summer skiing history with Lars Chickering-Ayers and Sole Diaz taking the top spots on the podium.

“I like turning where the mountain makes you turn and when you’re on big mountain terrain, that’s how I ski,” said Chickering-Ayers, the veteran champion.

In the men’s field, skiing talent rivaled some of the best this tour has ever seen. Mad River Glen’s Lars Chickering-Ayers took the win with a run that lasted six turns and 45 seconds.  Chickering-Ayers’ run was total commitment; he dropped fast out of the gate into an air that covered nearly 40-vertical feet of distance down the slope, hit a turn in soft snow, sailed smoothly through two more high speed turns and nailed a three on the money booter at the bottom. Rounding out the stout men’s field, were Josh Daiek, of Kirkwood, Calif., in second with a huge mid-slope three, and Kevin O’Meara of Squaw Valley, Calif., in third with one of the biggest airs off the cliff just below the start.

Chilean Freeskiing Championships finals highlight video:

This competition’s women’s field was the most consistently strong and clean in FWT history. Every woman knew her line, charged it, and for the most part, stomped landings.

“I am so stoked for my win in Chile; I am the only Chilean woman in the comp and I won,” said an excited Sole Diaz. “I actually changed my run choice in the gate. I saw a couple of other girls do a new line and I knew I could ski it better.”

In a proud moment on her home country’s turf, La Parva, Chile, local Sole Diaz, took the win by a full two points over two-time tour champion Angel Collinson of Snowbird, UT. Diaz skied similarly to Chickering-Ayers descending straight down the fall-line with no hesitation and dropping air upon air with style, fluidity and control.  Rounding out the women’s podium was Crystal Wright, of Jackson, Wyo., with her well-known grace and strength.

Setting the standard for the season 2012 Backcountry.com Sickbird Award, former Junior Freeskiing Champion Leo Ahrens, dropped an underflip 540 off the top booter, sticking his incredulous high-speed switch landing into the bowl before another massive three mid-venue.

With helicopters flying overhead, cat and snowmobiles shuttling skiers to the top of the mountain, this event was the complete package. And being South America in August, there were a few challenges related to weather and snowpack. The intended day two venue for the Chilean Freeskiing Championships — Stairway to Heaven — was kept closed until inspection today to preserve the snow quality. Due to overnight winds that scoured the ridge tops, competition director Bryan Barlow felt it necessary for the athletes to get a feel for the venue. When they entered the venue today, they discovered the snow coverage was too thin to safely ski the way they wanted to in the venue. The athletes met with Barlow and made a unanimous decision to not ski Stairway to Heaven, and to instead, return to the day one venue, Cornices, for the second run of the competition. Upon returning to Cornices, event organizers determined the higher scoring lines from day one had deteriorated from the impact of ski traffic and became unsafe to ski. Barlow and the athletes realized the competitors who had intended on skiing these lines, now had no opportunity to inspect new lines, probe landings, and check take-offs. Therefore event organizers made it optional for all qualified skiers to compete in the changed finals venue and made it an optional day, which would make it a best of two runs. Several competitors, who had established a lead with their day-one lines, chose not to compete, letting their day one score stand.

“Our Chilean Freeskiing Championships unofficially became the Chile Challenge,” said head judge Jim Norm Jack. “Conditions on the final face were too shallow and boney to provide a venue suitable for this level of competition. Safety being paramount, we opted to move back to Cornices. The athletes came together with the event organizers to put on one of the most exciting and spirited events we have ever seen. Relaxed and stoked, the skiers threw down dynamic runs. Today was a great celebration in the mountains and represented the full essence of our sport.”

Los Andes, Chile — Athletes have arrived at the remote and rugged Chilean cat skiing operation Ski Arpa to compete in The North Face Chilean Freeskiing Championships, the second stop of the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour. Located about 70 miles north of Santiago, the last 8 miles to Ski Arpa are not paved and are "tough going," according to the operation's website.

Today, athletes are set to inspect the venue. The two-day weather-dependent competition is set to take place Saturday and Sunday. Two to four feet of fresh snow was expected, according to the latest press release.

Watch the introduction video, see the event schedule, view a photo of the venue and read the press release below.

      Freeskiing World Tour press release:

"Who likes helicopters, snowcats, snowmobiles, and blower powder?"

Event director Bryan Barlow addressed the crowded room of international athletes, media, event organizers, and Ski Arpa staff at the Inca Hotel in Los Andes, Chile, headquarters for The North Face Chilean Freeskiing Championships, FWT Stop # 2.

Friday is inspection day at Ski Arpa Cat Skiing where conditions couldn't be better. We're expecting anywhere from two to four feet of new snow on the venue and, unheard of in the Andes, the wind wasn't blowing at all today.

"Tomorrow we'll be moving people from Los Andes to the Andes," continued Barlow. "A wagon train of athlete trucks, staff Subarus, and shuttles will head up the most challenging roads we've ever seen on the FWT starting early Friday morning. This is true backcountry in every sense of the word.

"This is going to be the most exciting event we've ever put on," said head judge Jim Norm Jack. "We're going to an incredibly remote place. Everybody needs to be on point, have a positive attitude, and make this a team effort."

Bottomline is the snow is deep, the team is in place, and the athletes are here and ready to get down to business.

      We're going to Disneyland.

Stay tuned for full photo, video and story coverage tomorrow night.
