Salt Lake City, Utah — The first stop of the 2013 The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series  (PPOS) kicks off with an exciting halfpipe competition at Copper Mountain, Colo. on Dec. 8-9, 2012. The North Face PPOS allows top-level professionals and up-and-coming freeskiing athletes the opportunity to advance in the competition circuit at all four stops throughout the 2013 tour.

“The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series is very important for North American freeskiing athletes,” said Steele Spence, PPOS series head judge. “The series is a stepping stone for athletes hoping to progress to the top level of competition. The events are very well organized with a full panel of Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) certified judges and courses at world-class resorts.”

The first stop at Copper Mountain will be the first AFP sanctioned event in the United States for the 2013 competition season. In addition, the Copper Mountain event will be an International Ski Federation (FIS) sanctioned NORAM CUP event with athletes earning FIS points.

“FIS is excited to be able to integrate The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series events in Copper Mountain, CO and Northstar, CA into the 2012-13 FIS Freestyle NORAM NORAM CUP,” said Konrad X Rotermund, FIS Freestyle Continental Cup Coordinator-Americas. “These events will provide a great opportunity for athletes to get their needed FIS points to be part of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games qualification process and/or earn the opportunity to be the NORAM CUP Champion. Recognizing schedules are very full in North America, it is great to be able to cooperate with the already established PPOS events to give the athletes multiple avenues to meet their competitive goals in a single event.”

Halfpipe skiing will make its Olympic debut in 2014 at the Sochi, Russia Winter Games. The PPOS will work in conjunction with the AFP to ensure professional competition judging in accordance with AFP standards and criteria. Judging is based on overall impression, including content, difficulty of run, style and use of park or pipe.

“I am excited to be a part of the The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series at Copper Mountain,” said The North Face Athlete Mike Riddle. “The best athletes in the world are all converging at the resort this early season to get dialed in for the coming season. The event will see a very skilled field showing-off the tricks they have practiced all summer.”

The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series at Copper Mountain begins on Friday, Dec. 7 with athlete registration. The competition kicks off on Saturday, Dec. 8 with practice and qualifiers in the Main Vein Superpipe, and concludes on Sunday, Dec. 9 with finals. Coinciding with The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series, Copper Mountain’s celebrates its 40th Anniversary Dec. 7-9. Specials throughout the weekend include $40 lift tickets, $40 Woodward Intro Sessions, $40 Ski & Ride School Lessons, $40 rentals for two, and many more.

The U.S. Freeskiing and U.S. Snowboarding athletes will also gather at Copper Mountain on Saturday, Dec. 8 for the annual U.S. Freeskiing and U.S. Snowboarding team naming event at 2:45 p.m. followed by a free concert by the Neil Diamond cover band, Super Diamond at 3 p.m. in Burning Stones Plaza. Enter to win a private meet and greet with America’s snowboarding and freeskiing Olympic hopefuls at www.facebook/CopperMtn or www.facebook/US-Freeskiing.

The field is absolutely stacked for the Copper Mountain pipe event. Twenty-four women and 65 men will be taking on Copper’s 22-foot superpipe seeking not only the PPOS event win, but AFP and FIS points. With names including Tanner Hall, Rosalind Groenewoud, Justin Dorey, Maddie Bowman, and the Wells brothers all in attendance, it is going to be an all out battle for the title.

Athlete Registration Opens Thursday, November 8, 2012, 10 AM MST

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – As the first traces of snow dust North American mountain peaks, freeskiing athletes everywhere are revving up for another exciting winter competition season. Falling in line with the anticipation of a great winter, The North Face announced venues for The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS), including Copper Mountain, CO (Dec. 8-9); Whistler Blackcomb, BC (Jan. 14-17); Waterville Valley, NH (Feb. 23) and Northstar California Resort, CA (March 8-10).

“This year’s events are perfectly scheduled to provide prime advancement opportunities for athletes ready to take their freeskiing career to the next level,” said Barb Hamblett PPOS Event Director with Mountain Sports International, Inc. (MSI). “Spectators can expect to see exciting top level competition at all four PPOS stops this season.”

All four PPOS events are part of the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) competition schedule. The Copper Mountain and Northstar California Resort stops will both be International Ski Federation (FIS) sanctioned NORAM CUP events with athletes earning FIS points. Athlete registration for all four PPOS stops will open Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. MST.

“FIS is excited to be able to integrate The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series events in Copper Mountain, CO and Northstar, CA into the 2012-13 FIS Freestyle NORAM CUP,” said Konrad X Rotermund FIS Freestyle Continental Cup Coordinator-Americas.

Founded in 2010, The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS) features slopestyle and halfpipe skiing competitions with $55,000 in total prize value up for grabs. As one of the only open-format event series, amateurs have the opportunity to compete alongside top pros.

“The North Face is excited to bring yet another season of freeskiing competition opportunities to athletes, both professional and amateur, across North America,” said The North Face Director of Sports Marketing Katie Ramage. “The progression of the sport of freeskiing is important to us, and this competition format is another way for us to support that movement.”

Slopestyle skiing takes place in a venue comprised of man-made features such as rails, boxes and jumps contained on a single slope. Halfpipe skiing takes place in a halfpipe similar to those used for halfpipe snowboarding. Skiers accelerate through the pipe to gain increased height jumping out of the halfpipe while simultaneously executing challenging grabs, spins, flips and other maneuvers. Skiers string together a series of aerials from the halfpipe in a single run. Judging is based on overall impression, including content, difficulty of run, style and use of park or pipe. Both slopestyle and halfpipe skiing will make their Olympic debut in 2014 at the Sochi, Russia Winter Games. The PPOS will work in conjunction with the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) on competition judging with Steele Spence serving as head judge for the series.

“The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series is very important for North American freeskiing athletes,” said Steele Spence, PPOS series head judge. “The series is a stepping stone for athletes hoping to progress to the top level of competition. The events are very well organized with a full panel of AFP certified judges and courses at world-class resorts.”

  • Monarch Mountain Might Be The Monarch Mountain Might Be The Coolest Colorado Resort

    • From: gregfitzsimmons
    • Description:

      The-evolution-of-Blizzard-skis—Thermo-to-Gunsmoke

Unless it’s closing day at Aspen Highlands, a “Blizzard of Ahhs” commemoration shred session at Squaw Valley or the Gelande Quaffing Championships at Jackson Hole, you might get scoffed at sliding up to the chairlift any other day rocking Rossi Roc 550s. However, there’s a ski area that is an exception to the rule: Monarch Mountain. Schussing around in jeans with gators on straight 210s is cool in Monarch the way duct tape is sweet in Crested Butte. Waterlogged river rats that make a living on the world-class rivers atop the Continental Divide and no frills locals that have been skiing the same spot for decades make up the majority of lift lines at Monarch Mountain. And, for all of the old-school gear Monarch’s locals sport on-snow, the terrain they get to ski on a daily basis is top-notch. Monarch Mountain is Colorado’s best hidden gem.

Located about 20 miles outside of Salida, Colorado, in the Sawatch Range, Monarch Mountain has been spinning its chairlifts since 1939, and, the straight skis that some of the denim-clad locals are on date back to years gone by. Atmosphere is one thing Monarch does as well as any mountain in Colorado. The vibe at the base of the mountain feels like skiing did in the good old days, and everyone is always smiling.

“You go to a lot of places and people vibe you super hard,” said Aspen-based pro skier Pat Sewell, recent winner of the coveted Captain’s Cup from Powder Week at Jackson Hole. “No one’s counting vert, no one cares what run you just skied or how rad you skied it. Everyone at Monarch is just throwing high-fives and that’s way cooler. It’s just all about having a good time.”

Pat Sewell Monarch MountainPat Sewell having a good time at Monarch Mountain.

The frontside skiing that Monarch’s cheap lift ticket (adults ski for $57) accesses is legit by itself. Steep glades fall from the ridgeline with tons of rocks to drop off along the way. A short five- to 15-minute bootpack gets skiers on top of terrain stashes that promise pow turns.

“You’ll find untouched snow a week after storms in the hike-to zones,” Monarch Snowcat Tours guide Chad Hixon said. “The steep lines in Mirkwood Bowl and the trees off Elation Ridge are as good as it gets.”

Along with the frontside shredding, Monarch Mountain boasts the best season pass in the world. It is not outlandish to call their “One Planet One Pass” the best deal on the planet. For just $439, Monarch Mountain’s season pass holders can ski all over the world. The pass spans two continents, four countries and six states in the US. Telluride, Taos, Grand Targhee and Revelstoke are just a few mountains that jumped on-board with Monarch in North America, and areas in Germany and Austria are also included.

No Name Bowl at Monarch MountainNo Name Bowl.

The mountain’s real claim to fame, though, is the insanely good skiing that the Monarch Snowcat Tours gets guests to.  The fat, rockered setups that had heads turning at the base of the mountain are the tools of choice on the backside. A zone called “No Name” looks like a mini-Jackson Hole and has endless possibilities to ski tight lines ending in mandatory airs that have never been skied before. Bang out a first descent in No Name and you get the honor of naming the line. (Be sure to get the backstory on the rocky and technical line dubbed “A.G.H.”) The guides at Monarch Snowcat Tours are always exploring, expanding, and opening new areas. And, after knocking off first descents and 12-plus snowcat laps, guests earn get a complimentary beer at end of the day.

So, it’s no wonder that Tecnica Blizzard decided on Monarch Mountain as the spot to host the winners of their “Need to Get Out” contest with Teton Gravity Research. To win the ultimate cat-skiing experience at Monarch Mountain, plus a pair of next year’s Blizzard skis and Tecnica boots, contestants had to make a convincing pitch on why they needed to be rescued from their cubicle. In the end, Rochester, New York-based high school guidance counselor Andy Fleming was chosen as the winner of the contest.
“[Winning this contest] will be a concrete example of awesome people getting after it in the great outdoors,” wrote Andy Fleming in his 200-word contest entry. “I will be able to share with my students that actually winning the lottery is truly sharing amazing experiences with friends and family. Cat skiing will lead to powder lines. Not illegal powder lines. The powder lines that nature has given us. Powder skiing is the best natural high.”

      Monarch Mountain Cat Skiing

Fleming hit the jackpot by winning the TGR and Tec/Blizz contest. “That was one of the best ski days I’ve ever had,” said Andy Fleming. “I get to go back to my students in New York with some incredible stories.”

So, if you’re looking for a ski experience that blends a throwback atmosphere with unreal terrain and no pretense, add Monarch Mountain to your ski spot bucket list.

  • Why La Nina Has Brought Fickle Why La Nina Has Brought Fickle Winter Weather So Far

    • From: johnclarydavies
    • Description:

Unless you’re in Japan or St. Anton right now, you’ve probably noticed there isn’t a lot of snow. From Squaw Valley’s 12-inch base to Mad River Glen’s 40 inches all season, skiing in North America is looking bleak. Sadly, this snowless winter is coming in a La Nina year, which typically produce whiter forecasts.

“Last year was a strong La Nina year, and this is a weak to moderate La Nina year,” said Greg West, a postdoctoral fellow with the University of British Columbia’s Weather Forecast Research Team, and the founder of Utahskiweather.com. “I think the important lesson from this year is that La Nina increases the chances of a colder, wetter year, but doesn’t guarantee it.”

Some ski areas, like Vermont’s Magic Mountain, aren’t even open, while most resorts have limited terrain available. Weather Underground meteorologist Kari Kiefer said the scant snowfall throughout the West is the result of a dominant ridge of high pressure that has hovered over the West Coast for a month.

“This ridge is strong enough to shove any other systems northward that move in from the Pacific Ocean,” said Kiefer. “This is why British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest have seen snow, but not the Sierras.”

The State Of Kirkwood, late Dec. 2011
This Dec. 2011 photo shows the bare slopes of Kirkwood Mountain in California. Although La Nina brought a lot of snow last season, there has been less snow this season — a lot less.
Mountain communities across America are hoping for more snow. Photo by Seth Lightcap.

Kiefer said that some systems that track through the Northwest and BC slide back down the northern and central Rockies, which is why Colorado and Wyoming have received snowfall. Unfortunately, Kiefer said the weather models predict the weak to moderate La Nina to persist through February and March.

West was more optimistic. He said that the arctic oscillation index, a term in meteorology to measure the differences in pressure between northern latitudes and mid latitudes, have been positive this year, which means arctic air is bottled up rather than moving down to the continental US. (In fact, the past two winters have recorded AO values that have been the highest and lowest ever recorded, indicating strongly anomalous weather.) But West said the forecast is calling for the oscillations to go negative, at least temporarily, in the next week. That could lead to more snowfall.

“There’s still a lot of winter left, and it could change,” said West.

  • News: Snowboarder Killed In To News: Snowboarder Killed In Torreys Peak, Colorado Avalanche

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

From The Summit County Citizen's Voice:

The seventh avalanche death of the season in Colorado occurred May 21 when a snowboarder died on 14,267-foot Torreys Peak, a popular mountaineering destination on the Continental Divide between Summit County and Clear Creek County.

According to a preliminary report from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, the accident involved a party of three backcountry travelers.

The first of the trio to start down Dead Dog Couloir was caught in a small slide and swept into some rocks. According to Summit County emergency personnel, he was alive when rescuers reached the scene but died about 20 minutes after the rescue party arrived.

Avalanche experts have been warning of the potential for dangerous slides the past few weeks as an unusually deep spring snowpack remains poised to avalanche as the weather warms or as cornices give way under their own weight.

The Summit County Rescue Group sent about five or six emergency responders to the scene to assist Alpine Rescue Team.

  • Towers for Arapahoe Basin's Bl Towers for Arapahoe Basin's Black Mountain Express Installed Today

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

      August 30, 2010

Keystone, Colorado - Chairlift towers for the new Black Mountain Express were installed today by helicopter. The eleven towers took just two hours to be installed. Currently the Black Mountain Express chairlift is on schedule to be completed by late September. The next step in the construction is placing the haul rope onto the lift towers. The haul rope is the stretch of cable used to hold the lift chairs as they move up the mountain.

The Black Mountain Express is a high speed quad that will replace the resort's former Exhibition Lift. Work on the Black Mountain Express follows a series of improvements over the past few years. In 2007, the resort opened a mid-mountain restaurant named Black Mountain Lodge. The following season Montezuma Bowl was opened, increasing the resort's terrain by 80%. Situated on the continental divide by Colorado's Loveland Pass, A-Basin boasts one of the longest seasons in the country, with opening day usually in October and a season that often lasts into July.

  • Cold Smoke Awards: TGR Wins B Cold Smoke Awards: TGR Wins Best Chunder

    • From: ConorB
    • Description:

So, Friday afternoon at 5pm Jill comes up with a brilliant idea.  Drive up to Bozeman for the Cold Smoke Awards Saturday and then ski Bridger Bowl on Sunday.  She claims it will be a "super mega wow" guys trip (which seems weird coming from Jill unless you know her), so she drags Blake, Euro Bungee, and myself along for the quick trip.

      Cold Smoke Awards Road Trip

We all get on the road Saturday afternoon and send it to Bozeman.  We roll in with barely enough time for a few cocktails and we are off to the Cold Smoke Awards.

Jackson filmmakers represented very well at the awards.
TGR - Re:Session - Best Chunder (aka best tomahawk into a hole and tomahawk in which your jacket and backpack come off)
      SSD Productions - Swift.Silent.Deep  - Best Soul
Storm Show Studio - Magic Moments - Best Film

      Blake Accepting a Major Award

We also learned that Blake has a natural ability for public speaking when he accepted the award for Best Chunder.  Maybe we will have to allow him out of the editing studio a few times this year!

      Full Moon Bar

After the Awards we headed to the after party at the Zebra Club.  After watching the band dry hump the air while wearing tracksuits we decided to head to the other room and enjoy the couches.  The party was pretty mellow and the night didn't pick up until the walk home.  On the walk we welcomed Jill to guys weekend by tackling her every 20 feet into the snow bank for the entire walk home.  Times of fun were had and I was there.

The next day we got a late start and enjoyed a killer continental breakie at the Lewis and Clark Hotel.  Then, we got on the road to Bridger Bowl.  Bridger is seriously one of the sickest mountains out there.  The entire upper ridge is covered with rocky chutes.  I managed to cliff myself out a few times.  We spent most of the time ripping around trying to avoid Jill's request to slow down for photos.

      Bridger Bowl Sign

      Heading to lift at Bridger

      Crew at Bridger

Once we were content with our ski day we hopped back in the car and made the death defying trip back to Jackson.  Death defying because Blake from Georgia was driving and it started snowing hard 1 hour into the 4 hour trip.  We made it back to a powder day on Monday after another successful trip to the Cold Smoke Awards!

  • First Turns of 2009/2010 First Turns of 2009/2010

    • From: n_p_g
    • Description:

This past Saturday on October 10th, I joined some familiar faces on a trip that provided the first turns of the 2009/2010 ski season. My last time on snow was back on June 20th at Mount Evans where a dense fog and low clouds made things a bit more difficult than normal. A similar story was painted all too brightly yesterday in the early morning hours all across the greater Denver area where an unexpected snow storm caught everyone by surprise resulting in automobile wrecks near every exit off I-70. Two hours later, Gary and I finally made it to the Henderson mine outside Empire where we met up with Chris and Forrest. Much to our surprise, the weather was almost non-existent along the continental divide in Arapaho National Forest.

To most people, I'm sure the skiing that was had doesn't appear to be all that appealing, but how can your really argue against the views we saw in favor of waiting in a lift line? With a few more storms, the Jones Pass area should have a bunch more zones opening up with Butler Gulch setting up after just one or two more.

Last year, I didn't venture out for early turns until the end of November so this past Saturday was extra rewarding.  With safety always being a key aspect of any decision-making, I'm elated to report that no injuries were suffered, no dogs were injured during filming, and no core shots found their way onto the bottom of our gear.  With a few more storms, there should be at least 5 or 6 more zones opening up that will help spread out the massive crowds of 10 people that we saw.

      Snow Camp
Story & Photos by Pete O’Brien

After experiencing a sketchy continental snowpack in the last few weeks, Jeremy Jones put together a camping trip focused on earning turns on some bomber sierra snowpack.
He organized a handful of experienced locals to spend a few nights in the Tahoe backcountry.  Winter camping conditions turned out to be ideal with mild enough temps to crawl out of your sleeping bag before sunrise and slip into the boots each morning without breaking your feet.  Check it out…
