“You’re Leah, right? I am signed up for your camp this weekend,” says the store clerk. “A friend of mine and I have been wanting to do it for years.”
I am in Revelstoke buying groceries with Leah Evans, founder of Girls Do Ski, a creative and supportive platform for building a more confident presence of women in skiing—and the world. After a day of touring up logging roads and finding a few laps of pillow mashing and steep trees, I’ve gotten a glimpse into Leah’s Revelstoke reality—a recipe of incredible skiing and an even more incredible impact on the women who ski. Walking around town, many women, from the ladies at the ski hill, to the town’s acupuncturist, to the woman bagging your groceries, know Leah. And they’ve either attended a Girls Day Out Camp or they want to.
On January 19-20, some of these women, hailing from Calgary, Edmonton, Ontario, and Revelstoke joined Leah and her coaches for a weekend of skiing, inspiration, and cliff sending. For some of them, it would be the first and only cliff they would ever jump, but lifelong shredder skills aren’t the only purpose of the camp. Girls Do Ski is more about joy.
“I want these women to have this weekend as a point of reference for happiness,” says Leah from her home in Revelstoke just before she runs out the door to ski a few days before the next camp on January 26-27 at Kicking Horse. “I want these women to think ‘I was out there this weekend doing things that I didn’t think I could do.’ I hope they can come away from the weekend knowing this place and time where they didn’t watch their lives go by from a desk, but where they allowed themselves to experience something and hopefully they can go back to that no matter where they are or what they’re doing.”
Leah Evans skiing in Revelstoke. Photo by Grant Gunderson.
Evans, who is consistently the most cerebral woman I know in skiing, doesn’t stop at women’s specific ski equipment or floral, pink graphics because her purpose isn’t really to just include more women in skiing. Instead, Leah, who grew up shredding the winter wonderland of Red Mountain every day all winter, is using skiing as a catalyst for growth and change. It doesn’t matter if her campers start sending back flips or never ski again. The lessons they take away from her two-day camps are meant to be symbolic for other experiences in life.
“In these camps you see women dealing with all of their fears, standing on top of drops, using all their strength and power to do it,” says Leah. “By the end of it, every roller and bump is being hit, the girls are out just sending and they are elevated to a level to ski hard.”
Fear is a tricky emotion, but if you’ve felt what happens when you’re afraid, but you decide to jump that cliff anyway, maybe you can simulate that feeling in other areas of your life. Any woman can utilize this skill, from the young, aspiring pro skier to an engineer who plays outside on the weekends. Leah and her coaches have made this connection and they’ve decided to share it with others.
“Share the spirit,” says Leah as our conversation ends. “We are all doing something out there that we love. I just want to share it.”

News: The North Face Park and News: The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series Announces 2013 Schedule
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
Athlete Registration Opens Thursday, November 8, 2012, 10 AM MST
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – As the first traces of snow dust North American mountain peaks, freeskiing athletes everywhere are revving up for another exciting winter competition season. Falling in line with the anticipation of a great winter, The North Face announced venues for The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS), including Copper Mountain, CO (Dec. 8-9); Whistler Blackcomb, BC (Jan. 14-17); Waterville Valley, NH (Feb. 23) and Northstar California Resort, CA (March 8-10).
“This year’s events are perfectly scheduled to provide prime advancement opportunities for athletes ready to take their freeskiing career to the next level,” said Barb Hamblett PPOS Event Director with Mountain Sports International, Inc. (MSI). “Spectators can expect to see exciting top level competition at all four PPOS stops this season.”
All four PPOS events are part of the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) competition schedule. The Copper Mountain and Northstar California Resort stops will both be International Ski Federation (FIS) sanctioned NORAM CUP events with athletes earning FIS points. Athlete registration for all four PPOS stops will open Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. MST.
“FIS is excited to be able to integrate The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series events in Copper Mountain, CO and Northstar, CA into the 2012-13 FIS Freestyle NORAM CUP,” said Konrad X Rotermund FIS Freestyle Continental Cup Coordinator-Americas. “These events will provide a great opportunity for athletes to get their needed FIS points to be part of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games qualification process and/or earn the opportunity to be the NORAM CUP Champion. Recognizing schedules are very full in North America, it is great to be able to cooperate with the already established PPOS events to give the athletes multiple avenues to meet their competitive goals in a single event.”
Founded in 2010, The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS) features slopestyle and halfpipe skiing competitions with $55,000 in total prize value up for grabs. As one of the only open-format event series, amateurs have the opportunity to compete alongside top pros.
“The North Face is excited to bring yet another season of freeskiing competition opportunities to athletes, both professional and amateur, across North America,” said The North Face Director of Sports Marketing Katie Ramage. “The progression of the sport of freeskiing is important to us, and this competition format is another way for us to support that movement.”
Slopestyle skiing takes place in a venue comprised of man-made features such as rails, boxes and jumps contained on a single slope. Halfpipe skiing takes place in a halfpipe similar to those used for halfpipe snowboarding. Skiers accelerate through the pipe to gain increased height jumping out of the halfpipe while simultaneously executing challenging grabs, spins, flips and other maneuvers. Skiers string together a series of aerials from the halfpipe in a single run. Judging is based on overall impression, including content, difficulty of run, style and use of park or pipe. Both slopestyle and halfpipe skiing will make their Olympic debut in 2014 at the Sochi, Russia Winter Games. The PPOS will work in conjunction with the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) on competition judging with Steele Spence serving as head judge for the series.
“The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series is very important for North American freeskiing athletes,” said Steele Spence, PPOS series head judge. “The series is a stepping stone for athletes hoping to progress to the top level of competition. The events are very well organized with a full panel of AFP certified judges and courses at world-class resorts.”
2012-13 PPOS Series Schedule
Copper Mountain, Colorado (FIS Event) - December 8-9, 2012
Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia - January 14-17,2013
Waterville Valley, New Hampshire - February 23, 2013
Northstar California Resort, California (FIS Event) - March 8-10, 2013

Grom Contest Interview: Sam Wi Grom Contest Interview: Sam Winship, Age 16
- From: adambroderick

Description:
Jackson Hole local and this year's Overall Grom Contest winning skier Sam Winship may be a young gun, but he's at the heels of the top dogs. Winship has won the opportunity to film with the TGR production team during the 2012-13 season. Winship also gets to attend the world premiere of TGR’s newest ski and snowboard film, The Dream Factory, and have his video edit play before every showing of The Dream Factory during the film's tour. On top of that, Winship gets a GoPro package and a pile of TGR swag. Take a gander through Sam's goggles, and get a view of the future he sees in skiing.
When did you start skiing? At the fine age of 3 years old.
What aspect of skiing do you most enjoy?
I definitely enjoy skiing powder and taking park-style to natural features. I like to learn tricks in the park and be able to throw them down on any feature.
Who do you look up to in the skiing world?
I really respect people that can do it all. Jossi Wells has placed in both slopestlye and halfpipe and has impeccable stlye. I also really enjoy skiers like Sean Pettit, Dane Tudor, and Sammy Carlson, who can take technical tricks to powder jumps. It's hard to make a list because there are aspects in almost every pro skier that I look up to.
Who are your favorite people to ride with?
My brother, Owen. We've always had a common interest in skiing, and he taught me a lot of the basics. He's taken some time off to pursue filming and a serious career, so I didn't get to ski with him as much as I wanted to last year. However, the days that we do get in together are some of the funnest, biggest, and scariest, and produce some of the best shots.
How do you balance school and skiing?
It's always hard. Especially going to a private school that doesn't have early-release as an option. I'm the only one who leaves to ski during the week. It's resulted in cab rides, taking multiple courses during my free blocks, and almost having to sleep at the Stilson Bus Station…twice. I always tell myself, "School first", but sometimes that's hard to follow. I need to thank my parents and teachers for helping me figure that all out.
Who do you think is the best skier in your local scene?
It seems that every time you ride up the lift it's with someone who just went to do backcountry lines or who just hucked a backflip off of Nightmare. Matt Philippi and Tony Seibert were two skiers that really impressed me. I saw tons of crazy shots of Matt going HAM in the stash parks, and I got to ski with Tony on a weekly basis and he never ceased to blow me away with huge tricks, airs, and some classic stlye. There are tons of others, but these are the ones that i consistently see at the resort going hard.
What does it mean to you to have your video selected by TGR?When I got the call from TGR and they told me I'd won the overall contest I was pumped. For youth riders who want to get noticed in the freesking world, this is one of the best ways. To be selected amongst the likes of Willie Borm and Daniel Tisi makes it feel even more surreal. I've seen Willie do double flips at Windells, and Daniel throw down one of the sickest park runs Jackson Hole's park saw last year: misty-7 to cork-9 to blind-270 off the rail. This year was probably the biggest year for the contest, and I was up against kids who had landed doubles off of pow jumps, flat-spins off of 30-foot cliffs, and mind-blowing rail tricks. It just showed that the hard work and the money my parents have put in over the years has payed off, and gives me an option to get my name recognized and to show the TGR crew what I'm made of next winter!
Do you edit your own videos? Who do you edit with?
My brother Owen does it for me. I've done a few by myself but by brother has experience editing videos. I generally give him my footage and he shows it to me at a few points along the editing process to get my input, but I rarely have any negative feedback. The end-product never ceases to blow my mind and make me look like a better skier that i probably am.
Can you describe your best day, or series of days, during this last season?
Yep. There was a saturday after a fresh dump and Crags was opening for the first time in a few weeks. I had never been up there, but my coach Matt Lancaster brought me with a few other homies, and we basically built four or five jibs off of cliffs and natural features. I did a few 360s off of cliffs and a switch rodeo-7 that I didn't quite stomp, but it felt great. In the days that followed, I had a sick day at Grand Targhee, filming with my old bud Sam Dery. We also had another sick jump session on a step-down that we built, which was awesome, until I over rotated a misty-7 and ended up with four stitches in my face.
What are your plans for winter?
Try to improve my riding and get some clean shots with the TGR filmers. I'd like to take my skiing to more powder jumps, and work on cork-720s and some more technical tricks that we see in the park. I will probably compete in a few USSA slopestlye competitions in Park City, Utah, and Sun Valley, Idaho. I'd like to compete in a few more big-mountain events than I did last year. There are some secret spots up on Teton Pass that I'd like to get after, but not before a few avalanche courses. I guess I'd like to get better, go bigger, send harder, and get more footage than I have in the past.
Have you found a way to train for winter during these summer months?Summer ski camps are the best, but also the most expensive option. I've been lucky enough to go to them for the past four summers, and with airbags and foam pits, its the best way to improve. Other than that, bouncing on the trampoline and getting a good sense of air-awareness is very beneficial. For park skiers, tramp as much as you can, and for big-mountain riders, try to fill your days with fun activities that will help with your balance and strength.
How do you plan on using your video selection with TGR to help further your ski career?
I think that this will be beneficial on a resume. It also gives me confidence [knowing] that professional filmers and skiers picked me out of a crowd of riders. To know that my skiing impressed some of the riders I look up to makes me want to send it harder, to hopefully continue to impress all of them. This is like an extra boost that I think will send me up higher and hopefully to the top, or at least part of the way. Also, having my video play at the premieres of the TGR movie will hopefully let people across America see who I am and expose me to a larger audience.
Any shoutouts to your homies, family or sponsors?
For sure. To my brother and family, first off. They've been the biggest help with getting me gear, getting me to the mountain, feeding me, and all that necessary stuff. Kuborra is an up-and-coming company with sick swag for the lowest prices around. Habitat ski shop is located in Driggs, Idaho, and have a plethora of products. And then to all of my homies, Lyons, Matt, Jake, Sam, Cole, AT, and Kathleen.

Nike Chosen Series - 09 Norway Nike Chosen Series - 09 Norway Tryvann
- From: nike

Description:
The 9th and last of the Nike Chosen Series proved to be a standout with the Norwegians displaying an incredibly high level of riding in this AM contest.
The perfectly shaped 15m Kicker, located on the same slope as last month’s World Snowboard Championship, gave the 37 rider’s ample chances to show the judges and watching public that Scandinavian riders can deliver the goods. Double corks, double flips, double Rodeos and countless Switch Backside spins proved to be the order of the day as riders were treated to glorious sunshine.
20-year-old Kristin Stubberud took Best Female with some well-held Stalefish and Tail grabs, Even Brekke from nearby Oslo claimed Best Style with a BS Rodeo 5 Indy, Backside 5 Shifty and a Frontside Corked 7 and with a host of tricks Jonas Steen took Most Creative with a Switch Backside 7, Backside Double Cork 12 and a Cab 10.
20-year-old Jørn Simen Aabøe from Kragero took the top honors of the day with an astonishing Switch BS12 Double Cork Mute, Double Backflip late 180, Switch Backside 7 Japan, Frontflip Nosegrab and FS Rodeo 7, an arsenal of tricks that gave him the MVP
Jørn wins the final ticket to the Nike Chosen Sessions to ride with the Nike team on a purpose built ‘next level’ park where he will join the previous winners from across Europe and compete to become the overall Nike Chosen Winner.

News: Freeride World Tour Rold News: Freeride World Tour Roldal, Norway, Stop Wraps Up - Results And Video
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Roldal, Norway — The Roldal Freeride Challenge competition face “Couloir 3” is a playful venue with a wide range of cliffs and wind lips to drop. The snow on top of the competition face was packed and icy but things were getting much better further down.
Podium Ski Men, from left to right: 5th Drew Tabke (USA), 3rd Sam Smoothy (NZL), 1st Dennis Risvoll (NOR), 2nd Aurélien Ducroz (FRA), 4th Cato Laegreid (NOR)
The biggest run of the day was Norwegian local wild card Dennis Risvoll, throwing two back flips and a lot of amplitude in his run, scoring best points of the day, crushing the standings of the established FWT riders. It would not be a surprise if we see this great skier as a wild card of one of the two last stops of the tour.
Risvoll won the Røldal Freeride Challenge last year and has gotten the taste for gold. After he said: “I didn’t think my run was that good as I wanted to do a double back flip! So I am stoked to win. We have a lot of great skiers in Norway, so I didn't feel pressure standing on top next to the big guys on the world tour. Conditions in the face were good, despite flat light during my run. I'm now hoping to get more wild cards and competing in more events.”
Last year's world champion French Aurélien Ducroz, is back in the game, climbing the rankings. He contributed with a beautiful run, including a long flight and a huge back flip.
Season wild card, New Zealander Sam Smoothy, who won the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc stage, keeps on charging and took third with high speed in a powerful run. With his third place today he still sits in first place on the overall ranking.
Smoothy gave us his impression of the day: “Cool! That's the word! It's been a long day with lots of changes but it ended up running well for me. I skied fast and I am super happy with my run.”
He also told us what it means leading the world ranking: “It was really important for me to perform well here. I fulfilled my objective: to stay on the top of the ranking. I'm not yet able to come to Fieberbrunn but for sure, I will be in Verbier and this was the goal. And I'm really looking forward to be there!”
Podium Snowboard Men, from left to right: 3rd Christian Schnabel (AUT), 1st Flo Orley (AUT), 2nd Emilien Badoux (SUI)
In the men's snowboard division Austrian dad Flo Orley was on top of his game and took victory with a solid run combining a lot of features.
Flo was incredibly happy: “This has been a tough season for me but with constant improvement race after race, I now have a goal to go and compete in Verbier where I have been competing the last 12 consecutive years. So, I don't want to miss it this year.”
Swiss Emilien Badoux, won the Freeride World Qualifier in Røldal in 2010, seems to like the Norwegian mountains and got the second best score of the day with multiple drops and stable landings. Newcomer on the tour, Christian Schnabel from Austria didn't hesitate and went fast, which put him in third place. Chamoniard Jonathan “Douds” Charlet is still leading the overall ranking after a fourth place today.
Podium Ski Women, from left to right: 3rd Eva Walkner (AUT), 1st Christine Hargin (SWE), 2nd Lorraine Huber (AUT)The ladies seemed to enjoy the Norwegian mountains and all eight female skiers charged hard and stable, making it difficult for the judges. Swedish Christine Hargin knows how to ski the Scanidinavian mountains and has been to Røldal before. She skied faster and stronger than her competition.
Hargin was stoked: “It was a really long day and I was very nervous on top, waiting. I'm happy because I did what I expected to do.”
Lorraine Huber from Austria took second after hitting several cliffs and riding fluid. Her fellow country member Eva Walkner skied fast in the icy top section, took good air and earned third. Angel Collinson still sits in top position on the overall ranking despite a 8th place today.
Podium Snowboard Women, from left to righ: 3rd Maria DeBari (USA), 1st Margot Rozies (FRA), 2nd Shannan Yates (USA)
French freestyle rider Margot Rozies is going from strength to strength her first season on freeride competitions. Today she didn't get the best light but that did not seem to stop her. She rode fast, fluid and took great air on the last two cliffs.
Rozies sits on second place on the overall ranking: ”I am really happy with my run. I was super stressed on top and when I started I was lost on the top ridge, so I climbed back up and started again. This victory gives me a great boost for the overall ranking and the title is now my goal. ”
Second place went to American Shannan Yates, who did a creative line in the mid section and stomped her cliffs. Maria DeBari, also from the US, continues her podium streak and came third, meaning she still has top position on the overall ranking. - Blog post

News: Campbell And Tsubota Win News: Campbell And Tsubota Win Park, Smaine And Sharpe Win Pipe At TNF Open
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Northstar, California - The second stop of The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series concluded yesterday under sunny skies at Northstar, California. Twenty thousand dollars in prize money was awarded to the top finishers, with James Campbell, of Sugarloaf, Maine, and Yuki Tsubota, of Whistler Blackcomb, Canada taking top honors in the park competition. Topping the podium in the pipe event was Kyle Smaine, of Heavenly, California, and Cassandra Sharpe, of Whistler Blackcomb, Canada.
Qualifiers for the men's park competition took place on Friday, with fifty-three male athletes trying to advance to the semi-finals in a best-of two run format. Then on Saturday, with partly cloudy spring-like conditions, twenty-two male and eleven female competitors battled it out in the park semi-finals and finals.
Taking top honors for the men was James Campbell, who delivered a near flawless run top to bottom, consisting of technical combos on the rail section, and then linked two back-to-back double flips, a switch left-side double rodeo 900 and a left double cork 1080 high mute grab, scoring an 89.00.
"James perfectly executed the hardest run of the day, hands down. He was solid on both rails, had spins both ways and back to back doubles." stated head judge and AFP General Manager, Steele Spence.
Rounding out the men's podium in second place was Spencer Milbocker of Bittersweet, Michigan scoring an 86.2 and Cody Cirillo of Breckenridge, Colorado in third with an 85.00.In the women's park competition, The North Face athlete Yuki Tsubota dominated the field with her technical and smooth skiing. Yuki slid both rail features and then was the only female to successfully land a left-side cork 720, scoring an 87.2.
In second place was Catherine Warchal, of Camelback, Pennsylvania, stomping the landing on a crowd pleasing double front-flip, receiving a score of 80.80. News: David Wise Wins Freeski News: David Wise Wins Freeski Pipe, Kevin Rolland, Devin Logan Win Dew Cup

Description:
Snowbasin Resort, Utah — David Wise won the mens freeski pipe Finals with a score of 94.50 and Kevin Rolland took home his second consecutive Dew Cup at the Toyota Championships after finishing second with 93.00. Torin Yater-Wallace was third with 92.75.
Wise took the lead in his first run and held onto it until the end. In that winning run, Wise started with a switch double 1080, into right 9, left 9, alley oop flatspin 5 tail to end with a double cork 12. With Defending Dew Cup champ Rolland and 16-year-old pipe phemon Yater-Wallace set to drop in after him, he wasn't leaving things up to chance and decided to go for his first-ever 14 on his second and final run.
David Wise.
“My first run was good, it was really a solid run for me, so I kind of felt like I had to add a little bit of something to it," Wise said. "The 14 was the first thing that came to mind, so dropping in I was like, ‘OK, I’ll go for that 14 at the end. I know it’s there. It’s just one extra rotation. I can get it.’ “
He wasn't able to land it, but he was so close to bringing it around. This is a great season for the 21-year-old from Reno, who's coming off a win in pipe at X Games.
“I’m on a hot streak for sure," Wise said. "It’s fun to be out here enjoying the sport. Landing runs. I’ve been around in the scene for a long time and did a lot of finals where I just didn’t quite get the run the way I wanted to. So just being able to land runs and just enjoy doing what I do has been awesome. And that’s honestly what’s made the difference for me."
For Kevin, he was sitting in 11th place going into his final run after falling on his first, and the Dew Cup was hanging well out of his reach. If he finished below 7th place, the Cup would belong to Yater-Wallace.
Kevin Rolland.
"It was trouble in my mind," Rolland said. "It was really odd in my mind at the top, and I just tried to put the run to grab the Dew Cup."
He came back and dropped switch into a 900, to switch 720, back-to-back double flips and finished with a double cork 1260 to earn the second-place and the Dew Cup for his highest overall season rank.
"It feels really, really great," Rolland said. "Especially this year because I didn’t get the X Games win and I didn’t get the last Dew Tour."
Yater-Wallace could have had a very different outcome had his ski not come off when landing the last trick of a perfectly executed first-run that included a double cork 12 mute into an alley oop flat 5 and a double flair. Miraculously he was still able to stay on his feet, and rode it out on one ski. His explanation for pulling it off: "I was just so stoked to land, and I just needed to, so I had to." It brought cheers from the crowd, that were quickly replaced by boos towards the judges when his score suffered for it.
But with one run left, he came back for redemption with a double cork 12, alley oop double, double cork 9, left 10, into a switch 9. His third-place finish bumped Simon Dumont off the podium and into 4th with a 91.75.
"I feel great about my season," Yater-Wallace said. "I guess I’ve been on the podium at almost every event so far. So I can’t be happier. I don’t care where I really ended up today, I just wanted to be on the podium so bad and I was. I had a ton of fun and I put down a run I had never done before, which has been my goal for a while, and I just couldn’t be happier."

After Saturday's Finals at the Toyota Championships, Devin Logan won the Cup and the event with a score of 90.00.
“I knew I was in contention for the Dew Cup and just had to come out and put down the best run I could," Logan said. "I had slope this morning, so I was a bit tired, but I got some energy, found some deep down and ended up doing it, so I’m thrilled." She also won the slope Semi's held earlier in the day.
In pipe, she came back in her second run to take the win with a Japan grab, to 5 tail grab, flair, mute grab, alley oop critical, 7 mute, to finish with a switch alley oop 5.
Devin Logan.
Canadian freeskier Rosalind Groenewoud finished in second with 82.50 on her second run that went like this: Japan grab, to 5 tail grab, flair, mute grab, alley oop critical, 7 mute, switch alley oop 5.
"I feel good," Groenewoud said. "Both my runs had little mistakes in them, so obviously I would have liked to be cleaner. But my second run had a trick I’ve never completed before, a kind of cork 5 flair upside down. So I was happy about doing that for the first time in competition and I’m hoping to clean it up for next event."
Maddie Bowman, who came into the event ranked first overall, finished third with 80.00.
Logan not only won the Dew Cup and the Toyota Championships title, she earned the Paul Mitchell Breakthrough Athlete of the Year award, largely for her 2nd place finish in both slope and pipe finals at the Winter Dew Tour's Pantech Invitational in Killington, Vt. She was stoked to accept her award.
"That’s awesome," Logan said. "I know my family was out there voting for me so much. They were rallying up everyone they knew. That definitely helped push, but also you add the athletes’ vote and seeing that I was thrilled. I’m just so happy winning Dew Cup, Breakthrough Athlete and my first double threat. It’s a dream come true. It hasn’t set in yet."
Tomorrow she will compete in the slopestyle finals, with a great potential for earning back-to-back Dew Cups in both the pipe and slope disciplines.
