Dew Tour to Debut Ski and Snowboard Big Air and Downtown Breckenridge Events

Burr Ridge, III – November 19, 2012 - The Dew Tour today announced the first round of confirmed athletes for the iON Mountain Championships in Breckenridge, Colo., December 13-16. The new Dew Tour will feature the world’s top freestyle skiers and snowboarders as they converge in Breckenridge to kick off the first major event of the winter action sports season.  The only winter event of the bigger, better 2012 Dew Tour will feature more competitions, including ski and snowboard Big Air, as well as a Film Night and concert that will take over downtown Breckenridge.

The iON Mountain Championships will feature the top names in men’s and women’s snowboarding hitting the Dew Tour Superpipe and Slopestyle course.  Olympic gold medalist Shaun White will bring his one-of-a-kind tricks to the Superpipe, while Iouri Podladtchikov and fun-loving Frends Scotty Lago and Jack and Luke Mitrani attempt to keep him off of the podium.  Last year’s Dew Cup winner, Louie Vito, will aim to gain his third consecutive Cup during the winner-takes-all weekend.  Several snowboarders will be splitting their time between hitting features on the Slopestyle course and triple corking in the Dew Tour’s debut Big Air contest.  Mark McMorris, Sebastien Toutant, Torstein Horgmo and Breckenridge local Eric Willett are sure to be pushing the progression of snowboarding as Dew Tour kicks off the 2012-2013 winter season.

Competition will be close on the women’s side, as Superpipe dominator Kelly Clark attempts to defend her Dew Cup champion title.  Gretchen Bleiler, Elena Hight and 2010 Olympic gold medalist Torah Bright will also look to get their seasons started at the top of the podium.  Perennial Slopestyle contender Jamie Anderson will face off against Canadian Spencer O’Brien and a strong international field of up-and-coming women for the Slopestyle Dew Cup.

“I’m really excited to start the season competing at the Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships in Breckenridge,” said Lago. “The riders get one shot at a Dew Cup for the year, and there will be a lot of heavy hitters, so everyone will be bringing our best to the event.”

Freestyle skiing events will see the athletes sizing each other up after an off-season spent training for one of the sport’s biggest stages at the Dew Tour.  Simon Dumont and Tanner Hall will meet in the Superpipe, hoping their experience is enough to overtake Kevin Rolland, the winner of last year’s Dew Cup.  Breckenridge team skier Bobby Brown will attempt to use home slope advantage against Nick Goepper and previous Dew Cup champ Tom Wallisch on the Slopestyle course.  The three will also be among those competing in Big Air.

The pressure will also be on the women as they compete for Dew Cups in Superpipe and Slopestyle.  Canadian Rosalind Groenewoud will aim for the top spot on the podium in Pipe, fending off Maddie Bowman, Brita Sigourney and Jen Hudak.  Slopestyle could be anyone’s game, as Kaya Turski and locals Keri Herman and Emilia Wint lead the top names set to compete at Breckenridge.

The Dew Tour’s new format for 2012 includes an expansion of events throughout the weekend, bringing the action sports and lifestyle festival to Breckenridge.  The world’s best skiers and snowboarders will throw it down on the mountain while the lifts are running, with the spotlight swinging to the Riverwalk Center and downtown area in the evenings, featuring a Film Night recognizing the most influential and progressive films of the season.  The iON Mountain Championships will also include a concert, set to be announced at a later date.

    • Description:

In the Open Men’s’ class on Saturday, the top 7 competitors after a 2 run qualifier advanced to a two run final where Alex Dorszynski rose above the other competitors to win the division and the coveted one-year sponsorship from 4FRNT Skis. Alex, along with Scott Pollman, Bryce Hanrahan, Eric Lee O’Brien, Justin Dye, Barret Young and Evan Haines advanced to Sunday’s Pro class competition as result of making finals.

Finals day on Sunday, Parker White’s consistently performed run composed of a fluid upper cliff section down into a 360 off a 30’cliff, a cork 7 on the hip and a P-White signature front flip out of the “rut-jump” at the bottom put him on top of the podium. Due to heating temps and isothermal conditions, the finals was reduced to a 1 run format where the latter 4 athletes found themselves fighting a crash as conditions set up and legs became tired. 4FRNT Team Rider, Thayne Rich washed out on his double-flip attempt on the last hit, which put him in second place. Kyle Johnston rounded out the Pro class podium with monster cliff airs and a bail attempt at a cliff air 720. Sean Fields found his swift line choice a bit too fast as he clipped a rock in the upper section for 4th and Utah based shred, Luke Perin rounded things out with a monster backflip after a miss-hap following a half cab attempt on the upper cliffs to take home 5th.

Lake Wanaka, NZ - In less than two weeks, many of the world’s top skiers and snowboarders and a handful of up and comers will converge on Wanaka, New Zealand, to take part in the 2012 World Heli Challenge.

X Games Medalist Antti Autti and Olympic Medalist JJ Thomas will see if they have what it takes to seize the top snowboarding spot from defending champion Benny Bright.

Antti Autti, a Finnish snowboarding star, shot to fame when he defeated big-name talents Danny Kass, Andy Finch, and Shaun White in the Men's Superpipe at the 2005 Winter X Games to claim the gold. He is one of two snowboarders, along with Steve Fisher, ever to beat Shaun White in the X Games Superpipe..  He was on the X Games podium again in 2009, taking a bronze medal.

Olympic snowboard superpipe medalist JJ Thomas (USA) was named Fuel TV’s Comeback Rider of the Year in 2010.   He earned his Olympic medal in 2002 and then took time away from competition to focus on filming.  He rededicated himself in 2009, pushing for more amplitude, style and a dipped shoulder that increased the difficulty of his tricks. Thomas will travel from his hometown of Encinitas, California to fight for the title of world’s best overall rider.

New Zealand’s Maria Kuzma, currently ranked number four on the Freeride World Tour, will be back to try to regain her title from last year’s winner (also a kiwi), Abby Lockhart.

Austria’s freeskier Sandra Lahnsteiner will go head to head with last year’s winner Janina Kuzma (NZ), who’s currently ranked sixth on the Freeride World Tour and who’s maintained the World Heli Challenge title since it’s comeback three years ago.

Lahnsteiner has featured in several movies including “Made in Austria”, “As We Are”, “A History of Snow” and “Check Your Risk.” The 2003-'04 Austrian Skier Cross Champion also competed in Big Mountain and in the 2010 Freeride World Qualifying Tour.

Big mountain skier, Sam Smoothy (NZ) will be back to defend his title as men’s overall skier.  Over the Northern Hemisphere winter, Smoothy became the first ever to stand on the Freeride World Tour podium at three consecutive competitions and, after remaining in first position for most of the season finished ranked fourth overall.  Smoothy will face some stiff competition from slopestyle champion, Markus Eder.  In the end, will it be big mountain skills or the freeski tricks that win the day?

“We are excited to welcome back several returning athletes this year as well as a handful of first timers,” said event founder Tony Harrington.  “We’re also looking forward to hosting our new Young Guns, Drayden Gardner (USA) and Luke Stavely (AUS).  They will join local Finn Bilous and returning Young Gun Mitch Reeves in this year’s field.”

There are still a few spots left for competitors who’d like to experience the premier adventure lifestyle event on the planet and see how they fare against top skiers and snowboarders from around the globe, but time’s running out!  Those interested in claiming a spot can e-mail bex@worldhelichallenge.com.

      About the World Heli Challenge

The World Heli Challenge brings together the cream of snowsports athletes from around the globe to compete in a unique helicopter-accessed competition. The goal is to find out which athlete is the best “all rounder” by combining their freeride and freestyle strengths to showcase their overall talent on snow.  The main event period from August 1st to 16th is jam-packed with events, parties and adventure days. For the first time this year, one athlete will be named the overall best all mountain rider.   This further separates the World Heli Challenge from any other event on the globe. Skiers and snowboarders will compete on an even field, but only one will come out on top. Will it be a skier or snowboarder?

  • How Moment Does Skiing How Moment Does Skiing

    • From: ryandunfee
    • Description:

Moment Skis, based out of the anti-ski town of Reno, Nevada, since 2004, has been doing things a little bit differently for a while now.  Most readily spotted by their signature square tips and tails, the practice started when founder Casey Hakonsson squared the tips on his homemade skis so his friends would actually believe he built them himself.  Moment brings more of a punk attitude to the ski scene, with dystopian graphics created by a family of forward-thinking artists, punk bands and PBR at their SIA booth, and hand-made product built in the casino backwater of Reno with a curious mix of American laborers using largely American materials.  We sat down with Luke Jacobson, Moment’s Vice President, Engineer, and Art Director, to get a feel for how things are done at Moment.

      How Moment Does Manufacturing

      1) Pick out full-length (6-foot) wood cores, consisting of sustainably-forested Aspen, pine, and ash woods.

      2) Vertically laminate the wood together.  Vertical lamination is where wood cores are sandwiched side by side across the ski, instead of vertical from the base to the topsheet.  This provides strength across the length of the ski; fiberglasss is added later to provide strength across the width of the ski.

      3) The wood cores are then sent through a re-saw, a planer, and a CNC machine to cut the wood down to the shape of the ski.

      4) Sidewall and tip and tail materials are tacked onto the wood.

      5) Carbon fiber stringers are laid along the length of the ski to increase the pop, stiffness, and to prolong the life of the ski.  Then triaxal fiberglass is laid on the top and bottom of the core, followed by biaxal fiberglass and a strip of matte fiberglass over the mountain area of the ski to ensure the hold of the binding screws.  This is a “wet layup” process where the layers are sandwiched together with liquid epoxy.

      6) Next are the graphics.  Sublimation inks, which are eco friendly and can be poured down the sink without any harm to the environment, are used to print the graphics out on high release paper.  Then the ink is transferred off the paper to the topsheet or base substrate. The inks dye the plastic. The used paper is then used as packaging for ski shipments.

      Moment Factory

      7) German steel edges, one of the only components made outside of the US, come to the factory at Rockwell 48 hardness.  Heat treating is then done in house to make edges more ductile (more bendable) where needed, then sandblasted.  Templates are then made to the sidecut of the ski. They are cut out and edges are tacked on with glue. All prep elements are a tack process so the layup isn’t as difficult. The main epoxy system takes over for actual bonding.

      8) The ski is put in the press for 40 minutes. The temperate ramps up to 185 degrees Fahrenheit and can vary depending on rocker type. The press then cools as well. The ski is then laid out for 24 hours so the epoxy can finish cross linking

      9) Then the flash, or excess material (epoxy, fiberglass, etc.) is cut off the ski with a bandsaw, using the steel ski edge as a guide.

      10) The sidewall bevel (angle) on the ski is cut on a machine called a Shaper.

      11) The ski goes through 2 base sanders where theye use rough to finer grit belts as they go along. Then the ski goes through a production stone, finishing stone, and ceramic edge beveler and polish. The factory edge tune is 1/1 and the stone structure is pretty basic.  Moment tries to leave as much edge on the ski for the consumer as possible.

      12) After a waxing, binding mount marks are then set onto the sidewall along with registration info. and then the skis are hand-packaged for retail.

      How Moment Sees Aesthetics

      Luke Jacobson:

“Art is definitely one of the most defining elements on our skis. Max Louis Miller was the first Moment art director and he really set the tone for where we took the brand. He is one of my best friends and we actually ran a clothing company before Moment. I have since taken over and found a majority of the artists that work together with Moment. It’s more of collaboration than just an artist contract. It’s really cool how many of them become part of the Moment family and care about the brand and direction.

After Max set the tone and direction for the brand style we completely embraced it and had to find more artists to complete a collection of now over 18 different models. What Max and the other artists have in common are content, style and color. These artists know their shit. They are in tune with the art world and are flooded with new content every day from the blogs and inspiration they take in. They work in a digital platform when they finalize their art but their basis is very analog, very retro and distressed.

Max explains it best: "I embrace some of these occult images partially because it's obscure but also because I’m pissed off and annoyed at how hard it is to get by doing what I love. TV promised me otherwise… The reality is we're all chasing nostalgia. Whether it is the feeling of being a kid or when the '80s/'90s had the booming economy and America was living high on the hog. Now we're in a depression and we're sick of living high on the hog, sick of chasing this impossible dream."

Find evidence of Moment’s unique takes on manufacturing and art with skis like the Bibby, the Ghost Chant, and the Deathwish at Momentskis.com and at retailers internationally.

    • From: powbrewer
    • Description:

In January, we visited Brundage Mountain after 60+ inches of fresh snow fell in the previous week.  We spent our first two days skiing the resort and sidecountry, followed by two days of cat skiing.

Our resort days blew us away due to the lack of crowds.  We were skiing fresh tracks all day, both days.  There were no pow day lines and virtually no competition for the good lines.  It was definitely a great surprise and a departure from what we have come expect at other mountain resorts.

Cat skiing was a blast at Brundage.  With over 19,000 acres of terrain and very few people riding it, we had deep first tracks the entire time.  Our group included Toy Soldier Productions skiers Shay Lee, Karl Fostvedt, and Luke Perin.  Alex Blais, Jon Whelan, Danny Arnold, and Bryan DePauw of the Epic Planks team were also along for the ride.  Our group was solid and the guides were willing to accommodate.  We ended up hitting some sick terrain that they don’t normally take all the guests to.  The steep trees were great and the guys had an absolute blast sending it off all the drops the guides threw at us.  What follows are video and pictures from our trip to Brundage Mountain.   If you get a chance to visit Brundage take advantage of it.  Lots of pow to go around at this super chill spot.

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

Killington, Vermont - It clearly wasn’t an easy day to be a Dew Tour judge after the battle that went down Sunday between Louie Vito and Iouri “I-Pod” Podlatchikov in the snowboard pipe finals at the Pantech Invitational in Killington, Vermont.

Vito was holding on to the lead after his first run with a score of 94.75 that set the bar high. There were some falls from a lot of the heavy hitters, nearly guaranteeing Vito the win.

But with I-Pod still in the mix, that quickly changed, and in the end, the win went to him for his score of 96.75 on his second run. The run started off with a Cab 7 crippler into back double 12 into front 10 to cab 10.

Iouri “I-Pod” Podlatchikov Dew Tour Killington
Iouri “I-Pod” Podlatchikov riding the iciest pipe he's ever ridden.

“I’m really happy I put down my back 12,” I-Pod said. “It’s always really special to pull out that trick because it’s real dangerous in these conditions. This is the iciest pipe I’ve ever ridden.”

Vito fought back as the last rider to go, and like a true competitor he nearly challenged I-Pod's lead with an impeccable second run that improved upon his results. Vito’s run started off with a double crippler, into backside 5, frontside double 10, cab double 10 to finish with a frontside 10 to score a 95.25, but it wasn’t enough to unseat I-Pod.

“I hate losing no matter what,” Vito said. “I-Pod put down a run and I can’t control what he does. I just try to go out and put down a run, but now I need to step it up and make sure there’s no question.”

Matt Ladley finished third after a solid showing. He’s coming off a wrist injury with recent surgery and 13 screws in place, but after his riding tonight it’s clear he’s back in top form.

Nearly all of the Frends crew made it to Finals, along with heavy hitters I-Pod and Vito. Another finalist worth noting was 14-year-old Kyle Mack, a former Gatorade Free Flow Tour winner that's making his way into the big leagues. He hails from Danny Davis' home mountain in Michigan.

  • News: Kye Peterson, Ashley Max News: Kye Peterson, Ashley Maxfield 1st After Day 1 Of Freeskiing World Tour In Revelstoke

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

Freeskiing World Tour Day 1 Revelstoke
Revelstoke, Britsh Columbia – Day One of the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour went off Friday on Revelstoke’s “North Bowl” with great success.  The level of skiing and athleticism displayed was high, with athletes battling for the few spots in Sunday’s finals.

Already a freeskiing legend at the young age of 21, Kye Peterson of Whistler/Blackcomb, Canada, topped the Men’s field by taking full advantage of the terrain “North Bowl” has to offer. Kye successfully skied off a big double-staged cliff up top, and then skied fast and aggressively through the open bowl.  To gain maximum style and creativity points, he landed two huge 360s at the bottom, impressing fans and judges alike.  Sitting in second place, with his playful, fluid, stylish skiing, is Subaru Freeskiing World Tour 2011 Champion and The North Face athlete, Drew Tabke, with a score of 39.17.  Completing out the top three Men’s finishers was Oakley White Allen of Snowbird, Utah, scoring 37.50.  Out of the 50 Men’s skiers, 25 men will advance to the heli-accessed Day 2 Finals on “Mac Daddy”, a remote location in the Revelstoke backcountry.

The stacked women’s field was very competitive, with only 3 points separating the top ten female competitors. Ashley Maxfield of Alta, Utah, skied the most technical line of the day for the women, wowing the crowd and surprising even herself. “I went bigger than I thought, but as soon as I landed on the second pillow I knew I had it” said Maxfield who scored 33.50.  Two- tenths of a point behind Maxfield sits the third place finisher of the 2011 Canadian Freeskiing Championships and Revelstoke local, Nicole Derksen with a score of 33.30.  Rounding out the top three Women’s Day 1 competitors is the 2011 Freeskiing World Tour Overall Champion and The North Face athlete, Angel Collinson with a score of 32.90.

“The level of skiing today was even higher than anticipated,” remarked Event Director Bryan Barlow. “Conditions were perfect. Soft landings and good snow allowed competitors to ski lines that have rarely or never been skied before.”

The 2012 Swatch Freeride and Freeskiing World Tour at Revelstoke Mountain Resort continues Saturday with snowboarders from The Swatch Freeride World Tour and The North Face Masters of Snowboarding, competing on Mac Face for a one-run final.  The Final Day, Day 2, of the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour is currently scheduled for Sunday, January 8.

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

      Freeskiing World Tour Revelstoke
Revelstoke, BC – Revelstoke’s Separate Reality venue was host to Thursday’s Qualifier for the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour. With few spots up for grabs in today’s Day 1 of competition, skiers pushed the limits of big mountain freeskiing to earn their spot. Taking first out of 60 competitors in the Men’s field was Benjamin Ogilvie from Fernie, BC. In first for the Women is Snowbird local Lexi Dupont from a stacked roster of 23 ladies.

“In today’s qualifier, it was definitely clear that skiers needed to step up in every aspect of the criteria; they had to have great technique, control and fluidity,” notes Head Judge Jim Jack on the selective cut. Out of the deep qualifier field, 13 men and 4 women will advance to today's Day 1 competition on North Bowl’s Unlimited Assets. “It was a very competitive cut, so congratulations to the skiers that made it in,” said Jack.

On the women’s side, athletes skied very smart and safe and 99 percent of the competitors stayed on their feet. “Winner Lexi Dupont skied fast and fluid, with direct fall-line skiing,” remarked Announcer Max Kuszaj. “Its no surprise she is sitting in the top qualifying position going into Day 1.” Canadian Crystal-Rose Lee was a close second. For the men, the majority of the skiers made the best use of the terrain and the style/creativity category by adding newschool tricks into their run, which benefited their scores. “A standout for me would be Fernie BC’s own Luke Nelson with his fast, fluid technical skiing on the top of Separate Reality, and smooth 360 at the bottom, encompassing all aspects we encourage in a competitor’s run,” says Kuszaj.

Skiers on the mountain experienced a mix of sun and snow with great conditions and visibility of the venue. “Conditions for this event are definitely shaping up to be some of the best we’ve had here at Revelstoke. The consistency of the snow will make landings cleaner and provides athletes a venue to showcase their abilities. Day 1 of the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour starts today and will be broadcast live on www.freeskiingworldtour.com.

  • Windells Session 2 Snowboardin Windells Session 2 Snowboarding Recap

It’s almost the end of June and that means that Session 2 has just finished up at Windells Snowboard Camp. The first month of summer has been flying by, as every day has been packed full with fun activities on and off the hill. The Nike 6.0 Team hosted Session 2, and with all of the park laps, skating, and Zombie Dodgeball the riders were taking part in, it was hard to tell who was having the most fun: Mason Aguirre, Sage Kotsenburg, Greg Bretz, Matt Ladley, and Ellery Hollingsworth, or all of the campers they were hanging out with!

A Session 2 view of the park, filled with jumps, rails, and boxes. Tucked in the right corner is the snake run, a favorite feature of everyone this summer.

For a small taste of summer snowboard camp fun, here are the top six moments from Session 2:

      -       The Nike crew hosted the first ever Windells Got Talent activity, where campers displayed a host of interesting skills. The youth of today is definitely multi-talented. the Nike 6.0 Team channeled Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson, judging acts that ranged from a devil stick performance, to pseudo-choreographed 80’s dancing, celebrity impressions, and finally, a brother and sister who did a dance and then poured soda on each other’s faces.

      -       The Capita Team came to camp, where they hung out with campers, participated in the chocolate milk race, signed autographs, and told everyone about their new team movie, Defenders of Awesome.

      -       Sage Kotsenburg held Sage-a-palooza with the campers, which included a multitude of birthday presents, cans of frosting, and prizes from Nike 6.0. Campers presented gifts to Sage, one of the best being a sock puppet that proclaimed he was the Sage’s #1 fan.

      -       Niko Cioffi and the Gremlinz were running around camp, too, and created a brand new, awesome camp activity: Capture the Schwag. Later in the week, Dakota Whitaker hit the on-campus air bag on a snowskate. Twice. This was the first time in recorded history this has ever happened.

      -       Nike 6.0 took over the Windells park. Mason, Greg, and Matt were lapping the tow ropes, Ellery was shredding with campers, and Sage Kotsenburg somehow lost his shirt, but was able to continue boarding. Nike stoked out the campers by bringing Snapsportz on hill and in the skatepark to get tons of photos of everyone having a blast and learning new tricks.

      -       The Voleurz Team trekked to camp from Canada, too! Joe Schuster, Jake Black, Simon D’Artois, and Patrick King showed their 2011 Intersection winning video and along with a group of excited campers, debunked the “don’t eat Pop Rocks and drink soda” myth.

Session 2 over and out—there’s still time to register for Session 7 in August, so head over to www.windells.com for more info, and come ride with us!

Derrek Lever grabs some fresh melon off the Gatorade feature. 5050 front three melon.

Mason Aguirre. We think he is doing a cab five mute. Regardless, looks like fun!

The Capita Team narrowly avoided getting carpal tunnel from all of the autographs they signed for campers while promoting their new team movie, Defenders of Awesome. (l to r) Scotty Stevens, Cale Zima, and Brandon Cocard. P: Erik Hoffman

Niko Cioffi back one off the pole jam.

That’s a really proper backlip. Luke Haddock.

      Greg Bretz has great grabs.

Niko Cioffi created and patented Gremlinz Capture the Schwag while at camp. As the Gremlinz would say, “everyone synced up and sanctioned tons of schwag.” P: Erik Hoffman

The inflating of the bag jump each year is a definite sign that summer is here at Mount Hood.

Del Mar means “from the sea” in Spanish. Brendan Gerard is from Lake Tahoe. The two come together for a second in the halfpipe, in what could be called a Del Tahoe indy.

At Windells, the zombies always win during Zombie Dodgeball. No matter how many times campers hear this, some still choose to play on the human side. Sage Kotsenburg and camper Sebastian work the odds and join the zombie ranks for a game. P: Erik Hoffman

  • News: Halfpipe Skiing Makes 20 News: Halfpipe Skiing Makes 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

LONDON (April 6) – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Wednesday afternoon that halfpipe skiing and women's ski jumping will be included in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. A decision for slopestyle skiing and snowboarding and the alpine team event will be made in late May.

"This is a special day. The IOC's decisions to include women's ski jumping and halfpipe skiing marks a truly progressive era in the Olympic sport movement," said USSA President and CEO Bill Marolt. "Today is the beginning of a chapter in the history books that will showcase these great athletes' talent and dedication on the world's stage in 2014 and beyond. The USSA is happy to be a part of these exciting developments in Olympic sport."

"With these (events) on board, we have a very compelling value proposition for these Games," said IOC Sport Director Christophe Dubi. "It will be an extremely exciting program."

Women's ski jumping and halfpipe skiing were two of the five ski and snowboarding events being considered for inclusion in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. After much deliberation, Dubi proudly announced the approved events. With successful World Championship events at Holmenkollen in Norway and Park City Mountain Resort in Utah, the athletes' years of hard work and constant support of the sports committed advocates have paid off.

"I have been waiting for this decision for over six years now, it is a dream come true. Now on to the next dream: getting myself there," said 2010 X Games champion Jen Hudak (Salt Lake City). "The level of the sport is high, the interest in it is even higher, the Olympics provide us with the ultimate stage to show our sport to the world!"

"This is a great moment for freeskiing. I feel honored to be considered to be in the same class as an Olympic athlete. It’s exciting to be recognized as an Olympic caliber sport," said seven-time X Games champion Simon Dumont (Bethel, ME). "I hope to have the opportunity to go to Russia and make my country proud. I’ve been waiting for the chance to bring home a medal."

For halfpipe skiing, the inclusion coincides with the fast-paced progression of the sport, as the world's youth continues to vocalize their interest through self-made videos and the increased number of ski terrain parks and halfpipes across the world. That progression led the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association to create a new athletic program and brand, U.S. Freeskiing, around the new events.

"The IOC's decision to include these new sports in the 2014 Olympics has reach and relevance to millions of youth around the world," said USSA's Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer Andrew Judelson. "This decision gives them the opportunity to dream big - to compete on the world's largest stage. This has an incredibly positive impact on the growth of our new U.S. Freeskiing brand by giving marketers a captivated and scalable audience to communicate their messages."

      Olympics Halfpipe

"It is hugely appealing to the youth. This is what kids do. They go in the halfpipe and on the jumps. Both slopestyle and halfpipe are extremely popular and appealing," explained Dubi when asked about how the decision will appeal to youth during the IOC press conference. "If you go on the internet this is what you see as well. They film themselves and share their videos. It's quite amazing what is happening."

For women's ski jumping, the decision to include became clear after seeing the level of competition significantly improve from the 2009 World Championships to the 2011 World Championships. With 13 nations represented in the top 30 competitors, and nearly 30 women consistently jumping between 80 and 97 meters, the diversity proved favorable.

"I’ve dedicated my life, hopes and dreams to ski jumping and I’m thrilled that our sport will be showcased at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi," said 2009 World Champion Lindsey Van (Park City, UT). We are ready.

"For our sport this means a huge step in the right direction. Women's ski jumping has been developing a lot over the past 10 years, but the Olympics is what our sport really needed to take the next step."

"To have our event accepted for Sochi 2014 feels amazing," said Jessica Jerome (Park City, UT). "This decision gives us more validity in the sense that it can only keep growing from here."

"The USSA is thrilled that these athletes will now be able to compete at the Olympic level," said USSA's Executive Vice President, Athletics Luke Bodensteiner. "They've proven themselves athletically, most recently at the 2011 Nordic World Championships in Oslo, with an excellent championship competition under some of the most challenging conditions possible."

Other events included in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi are biathlon mixed relay, the figure skating team event and the luge team relay.

"What is important though is to remain relevant to what is happening every given weekend. Once you have this relevance all the rest will follow," explained Dubi in reference to the consideration of Olympic events inclusion. "But it is not driven by commercial objectives it is driven by remaining appealing and remaining relevant to what people do every weekend, especially the youth."

Hopes are optimistic for slopestyle skiing and snowboarding and the alpine team event as the IOC will further review the events before making a final decision in late May. The IOC plans to continue meeting with both the International Ski Federation and Sochi organizers relative to the remaining events.
