Description:
"Sugar Bowl Resort is my favorite ski area because of the terrain, snow and overall experience. The Bowl gets dumped on and is an epic playground stacked with terrain. I love the smooth flowing groomed runs any day, but get drawn to the open trees, bowls, tight lines and gullies. Now as a professional free skier the challenging steeps in Palisades is my training ground for big lines in AK. Fun runs and fresh snow, days after a storm are there so find me and lets go. If not, explore or find a local and you'll be fired up. For determined and dedicated youth in the ski world, the Sugar Bowl Academy (SBA) is dedicated to offering an environment to excel in academics and racing / free skiing. It's an amazing life path where I'm more than willing to pass on my knowledge of the sport since I grew up in a similar system. To top it off the resort staff are super friendly giving it that traditional ski experience charm, an important reason for my loyalty to Sugar Bowl. Come check it out and take a run down Rahlves' Run." Banzai!!! Sugar Bowl Ambassador - Daron Rahlves

News: One Year To The Winter O News: One Year To The Winter Olympics In Sochi
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
PARK CITY, UT – One year out from the opening of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, U.S. skiers and snowboarders are scattered across the globe anticipating the opportunities they will face 365 days from now. The opening ceremony for Sochi is Feb. 7, 2014, with the first medal events the next day. The USA is coming off a Best in the World Olympics in Vancouver that saw 17 different skiers and snowboarders win 21 medals.
Venues in Sochi are undergoing final tests this month. Freeskiing and snowboarding athletes will compete in World Cup test events this month with U.S. Ski Team alpine racers conducting on-snow camps.
Successful alpine test events were held a year ago with ski jumping this past December.
Sochi will debut a host of new events including the inaugural appearance of women’s ski jumping, slopestyle snowboarding along with halfpipe and slopestyle skiing.
WHERE THEY ARE NOW?
Freeskiing
Freeskiers are coming off the Visa U.S. Freeskiing Grand Prix where David Wise and Maddie Bowman swept to halfpipe titles. Athletes are preparing for the mid-February Olympic test events for halfpipe skiing and skicross at Rosa Khutor near Sochi.
Slopestyle stars Tom Wallisch, Bobby Brown and Keri Herman appeared live on NBC’s The Today Show Wednesday morning, Feb. 6.
“It's hard to believe the Olympics are only a year away!” slopestyle skier Tom Wallisch said. “It's really exciting and I hope that I am one of the lucky ones that will have the honor to represent my country. If you would have asked me a couple years ago if I thought our sport would be in the Olympics - it just wasn't on my radar. I am really looking forward to checking out Russia and this next year ahead. I am sure it's going to be a really fun roller coaster.”
Halfpipe skier Maddie Bowman is blown away by to opportunity.
“It's crazy to think that freeskiing is going to be in the Olympics,” Bowman said. “I mean, this is really happening and it's only a year away! Holy cow! The last couple months have been going so well for me and I hope that my skiing continues to improve and I can stay on top of my game. I will be keeping my eye on the countdown. I am looking forward to the next 365 days and the adventure my teammates and I are about to go on.”
David Wise, also a halfpipe skier, is excited represent his sport in the Olympics for the first time.
“The Olympics! Wow, only a year away,” Wise said. “It really is an exciting opportunity and something that I am looking forward to. Not just the potential to compete in the Olympics and all that comes with it, but the journey my teammates and I are about to embark on. It's going to be a lot of work, but this is a really special time in our lives and I am going to enjoy every minute of it - the good, the challenging and whatever comes my way.”
Snowboarding
Top snowboarders were in Laax, Switzerland, for the Burton European Open. Now it’s off to Sochi for halfpipe and SBX test events.
“I love my country and I really hope that I will be able to be on that Olympic team next year,” slopestyle rider Chas Guldemond said. “I have been trying to stay really focused and perfect my run, there are always ups and downs, but I am going to do my best to be there. I've never been to Russia and I hope that I get to be there with my team.”
Halfpipe rider Scotty Lago hopes to return to the Olympics in 2014.
“I had such a great experience in Vancouver - there was so much fun energy around the games,” Lago said. “And here we are, a year away from Sochi and all the guys are riding so well. It's been fun to watch everyone learn new tricks and ride together. The year before Vancouver had a lot of twists and turns and it all worked out well for me. I hope that I can continue to ride solid so that I have the opportunity to go to Sochi in 2014.” - Blog post

News: Craig Kelly, Wayne Wong News: Craig Kelly, Wayne Wong And More To Join Ski And Snowboard Hall of Fame
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
Wayne Wong showing off his signature "Wong Banger."
ISHPEMING, MI - Freestyle skiing pioneer Wayne Wong and world champion freestyle moguls skier Jeremy Bloom lead an outstanding class of six inductees elected to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. Joining them will be Alpine World Championship medalist Kirsten Clark, world champion and snowboarding pioneer Craig Kelly, acclaimed international ski instructor and leader Horst Abraham and ski resort developer Hans Geier. U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame Chairman Bernie Weichsel made the announcement.
Wayne Wong is regarded by many as a living legend. He was the leading and most popular skier of his day when hotdog or freestyle skiing was emerging on the scene. The inventor of the famous “Wong Banger” and a star of countless skiing movies, Wong packaged his fame into being a true ambassador for skiing and continues to this day to convey his passion and enjoyment for the benefit of ski sports across the country. Both SKI and Powder magazines have named him among the most influential skiers in the 20th century.
Jeremy Bloom was also a star of freestyle skiing who won two World Cup titles and a World Championship and was one of America’s most visible skiing stars in the mid-2000’s. In 2003 he won gold in the dual moguls event at the World Championships and a silver in the individual moguls. Two years later he won his third World Championship medal as well as earning the moguls and overall World Cup titles. His six straight wins in World Cup competition set a record that stood for seven years. Bloom was also a football star at the University of Colorado and played for two years for the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers.
Kirsten Clark started racing at the age of seven, developing her skiing skills at Maine’s Sugarloaf Mountain. During her 13 year career on the U.S. Ski Team she won 12 U.S. titles and reached the World Cup podium eight times. In 2003 she won a World Championship silver medal in the super G. From 1998 to 2002 she strung together five straight U.S. downhill titles. A three time Olympian, Clark was respected for her quiet leadership and the high standards she set preparing for competition. Lindsey Vonn said of her, “Clarkie was always someone I looked up to.”
Craig Kelly is the third snowboarding honoree to be elected to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. A winner of four world titles in the early days of the sport, Kelly was one of its most influential pioneers working with Jake Burton Carpenter to open countless ski areas to the sport in the 1980s. He also played a key role during the early years of Burton Snowboards. The holder of an honors degree in chemical engineering, he starred in numerous skiing and snowboarding films over 20 years. The first true professional snowboarder, he was awarded TransWorld Snowboarding’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. He died a year later in an avalanche while seeking to become the first fully certified Canadian Mountain Guide as a snowboarder.
Horst Abraham is an Austrian native who rewrote the script for American ski instruction that had a significant impact internationally. Through his work America’s ski instructors emerged as world leaders in their field. Starting with the Aspen Ski School and later the technical director for the Vail Ski School, he eventually became the education vice president for the Professional Ski Instructors of America. As the developer of what became known as the American Teaching Method in 1980, focusing on teaching skiing skills instead of skiing turns, he led the U.S. to become the world leader in snow sports education.
Hans Geier was a leading manager and developer of ski areas across the United States for nearly 30 years. From the time he completed Pennsylvania’s Ski Round Top in 1971 until his retirement in 1998, he had a large impact on the growth of the sport. Most notably he was the general manager of Steamboat Springs resort in Colorado from 1981 to 1990 when he led it through a $43 million expansion, growing annual skier visits from 360,000 to over a million and putting the resort’s finances in the black. In 1994 he was hired as president of Doppelmayr Corporation for North America, a position he held until his retirement in 1998. He also served on numerous ski association boards including the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) and chairman of Colorado Ski Country. In 1988 the NSAA presented to him its Lifetime Achievement Award.
The induction of the Class of 2012 will take place at the Marriott Vail Resort in Vail, CO on April 13, 2013 as the concluding event for Skiing Heritage Week celebrating Vail’s 50th anniversary.
The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame provides highly respected perpetual national recognition to athletes competing in skiing and snowboarding and of the builders of these sports who have made the highest level of national and/or international achievement and contribution to American skiing and snowboarding. It is located in Ishpeming, MI, the birthplace of organized skiing in America, where it also serves as the headquarters for the International Skiing History Association. - Blog post

News: Three G3 Skis Recieve Fi News: Three G3 Skis Recieve Five Awards From Four Ski Magazines
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
VANCOUVER, B.C. – This fall, three new 2012-2013 skis from G3 Genuine Guide Gear, manufacturer of industry-leading backcountry ski gear, won five separate media awards from four different ski-focused publications, Skiing, Powder, Freeskier and Backcountry magazines.
With roots deep in backcountry and sidecountry ski culture, G3 has stepped into new terrain in recent years with wider, descent-focused, do-it-all skis such the Empire, Manhattan, District and women’s specific Cake.
The Empire, G3’s newest ski for deep snow and busting through crud, received three awards, an Editor’s Choice Award from Backcountry Magazine, a Skier’s Choice Award in Powder’s Buyer’s Guide and a Tester’s Choice Medal from Skiing Magazine.
Backcountry’s editors wrote, “With 127 mm underfoot, full reverse camber and a titanal aluminum topsheet, the Empire weighs less than similar boards … testers found the Empire to be more of a sidecountry playtoy than a touring machine, and there it excels. One tester concluded simply, ‘Fun, fun, FUN!’” Powder wrote, “A playful and buttery float in powder —perfect for drifting down the mountains of your dreams. Just point ‘em, and go.”
While the Empire led the lineup with the most awards, the newly redesigned Manhattan won an Editor’s Choice Award from Freeskier Magazine. And the new women’s specific Cake received the Tester’s Choice Medal from Skiing Magazine.
In addition to formal media awards, a number of other G3 skis were selected as notable performers in media ski tests. The Manhattan, the District and the Zest received Official Selection Medals from Skiing. And the District and the Cake were highlighted as notable performers in the Backcountry Gear Guide.
“As a brand that’s well known for backcountry and sidecountry skis, we’ve been pushing hard in the past few years to add to our ski collection with the Descent series, do-it-all freeride boards that are equally at home in the ski area, in the sidecountry or in the backcountry and with any kind of binding: alpine, AT or tele,” said Oliver Steffen, founder and president of G3. “We’re psyched to get this kind of validation that we’re on the track we want to be.”

News: Scarpa Teams With Chris News: Scarpa Teams With Chris Davenport To Launch New Freeride Boot Line
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Premier big-mountain skier Chris Davenport will be intimately involved in the product development process for the new Scarpa freeride line, available fall 2013.
Boulder, Colo. – Scarpa, the Italian-based manufacturer of footwear for the full range of mountain sports, began a long-term partnership with renowned big mountain skier Chris Davenport in August 2012. Along with serving as a Scarpa ambassador and testing new Scarpa products, Davenport will be a key member of the product development team for a new line of Scarpa freeride boots that will be available in Fall 2013.
Widely regarded as one of the most accomplished big-mountain skiers in the world, Davenport said he was attracted to work with the Scarpa brand not only because of its world-class reputation in the ski-mountaineering, touring and footwear categories, but also because of the opportunity to be intimately involved in the development and testing of a new, innovative line of ski boots specifically for the freeride market.
“I’m a product guy, a gear geek if you will. I love equipment, I love tweaking it, and I believe that you can always make a better product,” Davenport said. “Scarpa is super well respected in the world of skiing, so for me, this a chance to work with an already great line of products, but also a chance to help create something innovative and new.”
“There’s very definitely an opportunity in the freeride category – a product for a specific set of needs that doesn’t yet exist in the marketplace,” he said. “I’m not just joining Scarpa, I’m joining Scarpa to be involved in the development of the strongest boot line yet specifically built for the needs of freeride and sidecountry skiers.”
Chris Davenport absolutely shreds. Photo by Adam Clark.
Davenport began working closely with the Scarpa product development team in August with the goal of launching Scarpa’s innovative new ski boot collection to the world market at the 2013 Outdoor Retailer, SIA and ISPO shows in January and February.
Another factor that attracted Davenport to working with Scarpa was meeting the Parisotto family that owns the company, along with the Scarpa North America team, and seeing their passion for developing game-changing products for skiing and mountain sports.
“We’re all product people, we love having the right product, the best thing out there, the most high performance thing we can have,” Davenport said. “So I think that also makes this a great match.”
After beginning his skiing career as a racer, Davenport was a fixture on the freeskiing scene for a decade, winning two Freeskiing World Championships, an X Games medal, and many Powder Magazine Reader's Poll Awards. Among his many ski mountaineering achievements, he became the first person to ski all fifty-four of Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks in less than one year (2007) and recently guided and skied on Mt. Everest. Davenport has numerous first descents of peaks around the globe under his belt, and has been featured in more than 30 ski films by Warren Miller and Matchstick Productions. He is also a TV commentator for ESPN, ABC sports, and Outside Television, and is an Olympic and World Cup announcer for ski racing events. A professional speaker who often lectures on risk management as it relates to business and mountain sports, Davenport is the author of two coffee-table books that celebrate North America’s mountains, Ski The 14ers and Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America. When not traveling the globe, he resides in Aspen, Colo., with his wife and three boys.
Founded in 1938, Scarpa builds performance footwear for climbing, hiking, skiing, mountaineering, trail running and other outdoor pursuits from its headquarters in Asolo, Italy. Scarpa has been owned and operated by the Parisotto family since 1956. In 2005, Scarpa opened its North American headquarters in Boulder, Colorado., staffed and directed by veterans of the North American outdoor industry, to oversee sales, marketing and distribution in the U.S. and Canada. - From: media-75233

Description:
Lake Wanaka World Heli Challenge Launch Day 2011. Photo by Tony Harrington.Lake Wanaka, NZ - In less than two weeks, many of the world’s top skiers and snowboarders and a handful of up and comers will converge on Wanaka, New Zealand, to take part in the 2012 World Heli Challenge.
X Games Medalist Antti Autti and Olympic Medalist JJ Thomas will see if they have what it takes to seize the top snowboarding spot from defending champion Benny Bright.
Antti Autti, a Finnish snowboarding star, shot to fame when he defeated big-name talents Danny Kass, Andy Finch, and Shaun White in the Men's Superpipe at the 2005 Winter X Games to claim the gold. He is one of two snowboarders, along with Steve Fisher, ever to beat Shaun White in the X Games Superpipe.. He was on the X Games podium again in 2009, taking a bronze medal.
Olympic snowboard superpipe medalist JJ Thomas (USA) was named Fuel TV’s Comeback Rider of the Year in 2010. He earned his Olympic medal in 2002 and then took time away from competition to focus on filming. He rededicated himself in 2009, pushing for more amplitude, style and a dipped shoulder that increased the difficulty of his tricks. Thomas will travel from his hometown of Encinitas, California to fight for the title of world’s best overall rider.
New Zealand’s Maria Kuzma, currently ranked number four on the Freeride World Tour, will be back to try to regain her title from last year’s winner (also a kiwi), Abby Lockhart.
Austria’s freeskier Sandra Lahnsteiner will go head to head with last year’s winner Janina Kuzma (NZ), who’s currently ranked sixth on the Freeride World Tour and who’s maintained the World Heli Challenge title since it’s comeback three years ago.
Lahnsteiner has featured in several movies including “Made in Austria”, “As We Are”, “A History of Snow” and “Check Your Risk.” The 2003-'04 Austrian Skier Cross Champion also competed in Big Mountain and in the 2010 Freeride World Qualifying Tour.
Big mountain skier, Sam Smoothy (NZ) will be back to defend his title as men’s overall skier. Over the Northern Hemisphere winter, Smoothy became the first ever to stand on the Freeride World Tour podium at three consecutive competitions and, after remaining in first position for most of the season finished ranked fourth overall. Smoothy will face some stiff competition from slopestyle champion, Markus Eder. In the end, will it be big mountain skills or the freeski tricks that win the day?
“We are excited to welcome back several returning athletes this year as well as a handful of first timers,” said event founder Tony Harrington. “We’re also looking forward to hosting our new Young Guns, Drayden Gardner (USA) and Luke Stavely (AUS). They will join local Finn Bilous and returning Young Gun Mitch Reeves in this year’s field.”
There are still a few spots left for competitors who’d like to experience the premier adventure lifestyle event on the planet and see how they fare against top skiers and snowboarders from around the globe, but time’s running out! Those interested in claiming a spot can e-mail bex@worldhelichallenge.com.

About the World Heli Challenge
The World Heli Challenge brings together the cream of snowsports athletes from around the globe to compete in a unique helicopter-accessed competition. The goal is to find out which athlete is the best “all rounder” by combining their freeride and freestyle strengths to showcase their overall talent on snow. The main event period from August 1st to 16th is jam-packed with events, parties and adventure days. For the first time this year, one athlete will be named the overall best all mountain rider. This further separates the World Heli Challenge from any other event on the globe. Skiers and snowboarders will compete on an even field, but only one will come out on top. Will it be a skier or snowboarder?

Vonn, who has won the highest individual ESPY category the last two years, posted a record-setting season that included her fourth Audi FIS Alpine World Cup overall title. Also up for ESPYs are snowboarders and fellow Olympic gold-medalists Kelly Clark, of Mount Snow, Vermont, and Shaun White, of Carlsbad, California, along with Jaime Anderson, of South Lake Tahoe, California. Each are nominated in the Best Action Sports Athlete category.Lindsey Vonn won the category for Best Female Athlete in both 2010 and 2011. Her 2010 victory was the first time a snow sports athlete won the top honor in ESPY history. Vonn's 2012 season included a record 12 World Cup wins en route to her fourth Audi FIS Alpine World Cup overall title, in addition to her fifth straight downhill crown, fourth Super G title and third consecutive Super Combined Globe to bring her career total to 16. She also reset the women's all-time World Cup point total record to 1,980, falling just 20 points shy of Hermann Maier's men's record. Among women racers, Vonn only stands behind the all-time World Cup win marks of Annemarie Moser-Proell (62) and Vreni Schneider (55). Among men, she's only shy of Ingemar Stenmark (86) and Maier (54).
Kelly Clark has been nominated for the 2012 ESPY award for Best Female Action Sports Athlete. She produced a nearly perfect season that included an unprecedented 16-event winning streak, including victories at the Aspen and European X-Games. Clark is one of only a few female riders who has landed a 1080 in competition, and helped pave the way for snowboarding in 2002 when she became the first athlete to win the ESPY award for Best Action Sports Athlete after winning the Olympic gold medal in halfpipe.
Shaun White is nominated for the 2012 ESPY award for Best Male Action Sports Athlete. Last winter, he became the first snowboarder to receive a perfect score of 100 and secure a halfpipe gold medal at the Aspen X-Games. White also won gold in the European X-Games slopestyle event. He has won this category six times, including every year since 2008.
Jaime Anderson is also nominated for the 2012 ESPY award for Best Female Action Sports Athlete. A slopestyle pioneer, Anderson produced eight podiums last winter, including gold in both the Aspen and European X-Games. She also posted a clean sweep of the Burton Open series with wins in the U.S., Europe and Canada. Slopestyle snowboarding will make its debut at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, where Anderson is hoping to secure gold.
The ESPYs are determined entirely by popular vote. Polling is open until July 9 at espn.go.com. The awards will air live on July 11 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.

News: Nine Queens Women's Free News: Nine Queens Women's Freeskiing Event Kicks Off In Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis Austria
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
The worlds best female freeskiers met up in the Austrian Alps on Sunday for the second annual Suzuki NINE QUEENS, a next-level women’s freeski event. Virginie Faivre of the O’Neill International Team sent out the invitations and everyone gladly accepted the call to Serfaus, Fiss, Ladis including: Kaya Turski, who had just won another impressive X Games Gold medal, Anna Segal, Emilia Wint, Ashley Battersby and Keri Herman, all of whom had also made the long trip from the European X Games. The biggest names in the European scene also joined them including Caja Schöpf, Eveline Bhend and many more.
The event started on Sunday evening with a classy welcome dinner at the Community Hall in Ladis. In the awe-inspiring ancient basement, the event organizer Nico Zacek officially welcomed the Queens and set out a rough plan for the upcoming week. All the best photos of the previous year hung on the walls, inspiring the QUEENS, who each received a Baby-G watch as a small welcoming present. The atmosphere couldn’t have been better and one could feel the excited anticipation for the upcoming kicker session.
However the weather gods did not feel like accommodating the queen’s anticipation much, on Monday. High snowfall and an impenetrable fog made even an inspection of the jump impossible. Disregarding the adverse conditions, all the ladies made sure to complete a sightseeing tour of the “Chateaux”, as the impressive jump had been named. Emma Dahlström and Julie Bénard of the Marker Völkl International Freeski Team even sessioned the rails at the Chateaux for a little while.
The first big day of the event was on Tuesday, when the clouds parted and revealed the impressive “Chateaux” with a fresh coat of white snow to brighten the day. The shapers of the world renown Schneestern Crew first needed a few hours to clear the snow around the complex structure and bring the jump back into top form. The Queens finally got to hit the jump just before lunch, however mother nature still wanted to meddle a little with the play of things: a strong and variable wind made things a little too dangerous to continue the session. When almost all hope had been lost, the wind subsided and the session on Virginie Faivres’ Chateaux was able start proper.
The Queens proved quickly why they are considered the best in the world, needing only a few warm up jumps before their styled out tricks started to draw yelps of joy from filmers and photographer alike. Yet the media contingent was not alone in their exhilaration, “The Jump is just perfect!” said Australian Anna Segal, “It is without a doubt one of the best kickers I have ever skied”. With the warm light of the dying sun as a backdrop it was truly a breathtaking session to behold.
A number of special photo and film shoots are still planned until the big day, however, one will have to wait a little longer to see the finished products that the small number of invited camera professionals will present from these epic sessions. With the public Big Air contest, the release of the photos and videos, as well as the afterparty on Saturday, it is going to be a very exciting week!
