      New Subaru Freeride Series Announced

4-star Freeride World Qualifiers provide Launch Pad to the Freeride World Tour

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - Salt Lake City, Utah-based Mountain Sports International (MSI) announced the schedule for the 2013 Subaru Freeride Series today. The new series features three 4-star Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ) ski events for men and women at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, CO (Feb. 7-10); Moonlight Basin Resort, MT (March 14-17); and the Subaru Freeride Nationals at Snowbird Ski Resort (April 11-14).  Two 2-star Freeride World Qualifier events will also be held as part of the series at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, CO (Feb. 6-7) and Snowbird Ski Resort (April 10-11).  The 2-star events provide an additional platform for athletes to earn Freeride World Qualifier points with the top men and women advancing to the corresponding day of 4-star competition. The full FWQ calendar will be released tomorrow with a full slate of worldwide events, including additional FWQ events in Canada and the United States.

“These premier 4-star events provide crucial opportunities for athletes hoping to qualify for the world tour,” said Event Director Bryan Barlow of Mountain Sports International. “We are excited to provide this opportunity on the country's leading big mountain venues.”

The Freeride World Qualifier point system (FWQ) has been developed as part of the newly unified Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face (FWT). All FWT events are designated as 5-star events. FWQs range from 1 to 4-stars and enable athletes to earn a corresponding ratio of points based on their performance at competitions. Accumulated points immediately affect an athlete's position on the FWT ranking system. The top ranked athletes will qualify to participate on the 2014 FWT.

The first ever FWT season will start with a roster of 36 prequalified male skiers, 14 male snowboarders, 14 female skiers and seven female snowboarders. Athlete qualification for the 2013 FWT has been designated by previous tour performance and rankings on the 2012 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour, The North Face Masters of Snowboarding and Swatch Freeride World Tours. In the future, the FWT roster will be created through the FWQ point system granting FWT positions to athletes with the highest points on the FWT and regional Freeride World Qualifying events such as the Subaru Freeride Series. The 2013 season of FWQ competition will climax at the Freeride Nationals at Snowbird Ski Resort in April, the final opportunity for FWQ athletes to launch to the FWT.

The Subaru Freeride Series is sponsored by Subaru, Sierra Nevada, Clif Bar, The North Face and Black Diamond

Registration for Subaru Freeride Series will open Dec. 4, 2012. Riders will be able to create a profile and sign-up for the Subaru Freeride Series events of their choice through the Freeride World Qualifier registration system. Twenty-one days prior to the 4-star day of competition and 45 days prior to the 2-star event, registration for the events will close. Athlete Registration Opens Thursday, November 8, 2012, 10 AM MST

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – As the first traces of snow dust North American mountain peaks, freeskiing athletes everywhere are revving up for another exciting winter competition season. Falling in line with the anticipation of a great winter, The North Face announced venues for The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS), including Copper Mountain, CO (Dec. 8-9); Whistler Blackcomb, BC (Jan. 14-17); Waterville Valley, NH (Feb. 23) and Northstar California Resort, CA (March 8-10).

“This year’s events are perfectly scheduled to provide prime advancement opportunities for athletes ready to take their freeskiing career to the next level,” said Barb Hamblett PPOS Event Director with Mountain Sports International, Inc. (MSI). “Spectators can expect to see exciting top level competition at all four PPOS stops this season.”

All four PPOS events are part of the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) competition schedule. The Copper Mountain and Northstar California Resort stops will both be International Ski Federation (FIS) sanctioned NORAM CUP events with athletes earning FIS points. Athlete registration for all four PPOS stops will open Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. MST.

“FIS is excited to be able to integrate The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series events in Copper Mountain, CO and Northstar, CA into the 2012-13 FIS Freestyle NORAM CUP,” said Konrad X Rotermund FIS Freestyle Continental Cup Coordinator-Americas. “These events will provide a great opportunity for athletes to get their needed FIS points to be part of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games qualification process and/or earn the opportunity to be the NORAM CUP Champion. Recognizing schedules are very full in North America, it is great to be able to cooperate with the already established PPOS events to give the athletes multiple avenues to meet their competitive goals in a single event.”

Founded in 2010, The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS) features slopestyle and halfpipe skiing competitions with $55,000 in total prize value up for grabs. As one of the only open-format event series, amateurs have the opportunity to compete alongside top pros.

“The North Face is excited to bring yet another season of freeskiing competition opportunities to athletes, both professional and amateur, across North America,” said The North Face Director of Sports Marketing Katie Ramage. “The progression of the sport of freeskiing is important to us, and this competition format is another way for us to support that movement.”

Slopestyle skiing takes place in a venue comprised of man-made features such as rails, boxes and jumps contained on a single slope. Halfpipe skiing takes place in a halfpipe similar to those used for halfpipe snowboarding. Skiers accelerate through the pipe to gain increased height jumping out of the halfpipe while simultaneously executing challenging grabs, spins, flips and other maneuvers. Skiers string together a series of aerials from the halfpipe in a single run. Judging is based on overall impression, including content, difficulty of run, style and use of park or pipe. Both slopestyle and halfpipe skiing will make their Olympic debut in 2014 at the Sochi, Russia Winter Games. The PPOS will work in conjunction with the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) on competition judging with Steele Spence serving as head judge for the series.

“The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series is very important for North American freeskiing athletes,” said Steele Spence, PPOS series head judge. “The series is a stepping stone for athletes hoping to progress to the top level of competition. The events are very well organized with a full panel of AFP certified judges and courses at world-class resorts.”

      2012-13 PPOS Series Schedule

Copper Mountain, Colorado (FIS Event) - December 8-9, 2012

Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia - January 14-17,2013

Waterville Valley, New Hampshire - February 23, 2013

      Freeskiing World Tour Revelstoke Results
Revelstoke, British Columbia – Wednesday’s finals of the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour 2012 on Revelstoke’s Mackenzie Peak were a spectacular display of big mountain freeskiing. After a two-day weather delay, competitors and fans woke up to perfect bluebird skies for the culmination of this global competition.

Topping the field of 25 male competitors is 21-year-old Kye Petersen of Whistler/Blackcomb. With a cumulative scoring format used, Kye used his winning score from Day 1 to head into the finals with the lead. Stomping his landings with his trademark compact style, Kye made this difficult venue look effortless earning the top score of 83.03.

“I just wanted to get to the bottom and stay on my feet," Petersen said. "This is the best a competition can be, with the best skiers from North America and Europe, I’m excited to come out on top.”

In second with a score of 79.00 is Oakley White-Allen of Snowbird, Utah who impressed the judges with his confident and fluid skiing.

“I followed my same approach from day one and that was to ski a line that is fun to ski, I think that comes out in your body language so that’s what I did today,” White-Allen said with a giant smile on his face.

Rounding out the top three is Drew Tabke, scoring 78.83 thanks to his consistent landings and technical line choice.

Freeskiing World Tour Revelstoke Women's Results
Continuing her winning streak is Snowbird’s Angel Collinson, Subaru FWT Champion of 2011, with a winning cumulative score of 72.40.

“My day was already made when I woke up to bluebird skies this morning.  I was really excited to ski that awesome face with tons of options and I felt I had a strong run today,” Collinson said.

In close second out of Jackson Hole is Crystal Wright. Hitting one of the biggest drops of the day for the ladies, Wright skied fluid and strong scoring a 71.73. In third with a score of 69.67 is tour veteran Jess McMillan who ripped the face of Mackenzie Peak with her fast, dynamic turns.

“Mac Daddy”, a new competition venue for the finals, is a leg-burning 2,500 vertical feet, loaded with features and steep lines.  With patrollers from Revelstoke Mountain Resort performing avalanche control on the venue for the past few days, snow conditions were a bit variable for the competitors.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to have a day like this work out.  All of the pieces of the puzzle fit today and we were able to showcase the world’s elite skiers on what truly is the Mac Daddy of all Freeskiing venues,” MSI Event Director Bryan Barlow said.

Presented to the winners are Howitzer Shell trophies, courtesy of Swatch. These awards represent shells used in avalanche control work-necessary to ski a venue like today’s “Mac Daddy”. This wraps up the 2012 stop co-organized between the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour and the Swatch Freeride World tour.

“Everything came together today," President and CEO of MSI, Adam Comey said. "We had a spectacular venue, amazing support from Revelstoke Mountain Resort, the partnership with the Swatch Freeride World tour and the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour came together in a celebration of big mountain skiing and showed the world why this is such an amazing sport.”

Freeskiing World Tour, Freeride World Tour Partner
World Tours join for first combined stop of the Swatch Freeride & Freeskiing World Tour Jan. 4-11 in Revelstoke, British Columbia.

Snowboarding added to Revelstoke with athletes from the Freeride World Tour and The North Face Masters.

Salt Lake City, Utah – North American-based Subaru Freeskiing World Tour and European-based Swatch Freeride World Tour have joined to establish a new global competitive big mountain freeskiing and snowboarding structure, with stops stretching from Revelstoke, British Columbia, to Verbier, Switzerland. The move comes after years of both tours experiencing incredible growth in both athlete and sponsorship participation.

“This is the natural next step in the evolution of a long-term partnership between both tours,” said Adam Comey, president of Salt Lake City-based Mountain Sports International, the company that owns the Freeskiing World Tour. “This is a global sport with a common culture and passion for big mountain riding and a global strategy will best serve the athletes, events, and tour sponsors.”

Freeride World Tour organizers are in complete agreement.

“The 2012 season will be the next step in globalizing freeride,” said Nicholas Hale Woods, founder of the Swatch Freeride World Tour.  “We’re extremely pleased to co-organize an event together with MSI in Revelstoke in 2012, and we’ will continue working ever closer with MSI to further align our events and activities in 2013.”

In 2012, the tours will operate independently as they have in the past, with a joint event in Revelstoke, British Columbia, in January, followed by top Subaru Freeskiing World Tour and The North Face Masters athletes joining the Freeride athletes again at season’s end in Verbier, Switzerland, for the Swatch Verbier Extreme, featuring a $32,000 prize purse.

“Although Revelstoke Mountain Resort is expanding into the family market, our heart and soul is big mountain skiing and riding,” said Revelstoke Mountain Resort Chief Operating Officer, Rod Kessler. “The combination of the Swatch Freeride Tour and the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour marks a historic event amongst the Snow Sports industry. Revelstoke Mountain Resort and the Revelstoke Accommodation Association is excited to host the world’s top big mountain ski and snowboard athletes in January 2012. Our goal is to deliver an unforgettable experience to both athletes and guests alike, while showcasing Revelstoke’s unparalleled terrain, snow conditions, and hospitality.”

In addition to event collaboration, the two tours will also follow a unified global event tier and points system, now giving athletes the chance to enter in small, open events that feed directly to the world’s biggest freeskiing championships. Events will be grouped as 5-Star, 4-Star, or 3-Star categories: 5-star events will include Freeskiing World Tour and Freeride World Tour main events. 4-Star events will include World Tour Qualifiers and long-standing regional events such as Taos and Red Mountain.  3-Star events include competitions with big, open fields, first-time competitors, and lower prize money such as the Ski the East Tour.

The official 2011-12 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour season started this summer in Las Lenas at the Argentinean Freeskiing Championships (Stop #1), then moved to Ski Arpa in Los Andes at the Chilean Freeskiing Championships (Stop #2). The Swatch Freeride & Freeskiing World Tour Revelstoke 2012, Jan 4-11, will be Stop #3 on the Subaru FWT. Twenty-five pre-qualified Freeskiing World Tour athletes will join 25 pre-qualified Freeride World Tour athletes. Fifteen open spots are up for grabs in the qualifier event boasting upwards of 80 freeskiing athletes. Twelve snowboarding athletes from The North Face Masters will join 12 riders from the Freeride World Tour for the snowboarding category of the event.

“By partnering with the Freeride World Tour we are going to make it more compelling for fans around the world to follow both tours and other independent stops, as their favorite athletes gain points.  The event structure and points system will create a clear path and added exposure for all aspiring big mountain skiers and snowboarders,” said FWT event director Bryan Barlow. “The strategy for both tours has always been to grow the sport and keep it moving in the right direction, and I am looking forward to developing our partnership and events alike.”

The Subaru Freeskiing World Tour will continue on to Crested Butte, Colorado, Kirkwood, California, and Snowbird, Utah. An overall Subaru Freeskiing World Tour Champion will be crowned at the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour Championships at Snowbird.

    • From: media-75233
    • Description:

      Story From Freeskiingworldtour.com

"The Subaru Freeskiing World Tour will never be the same. For the first time in the tour’s 15-year history, man-made, mandatory slopestyle jumps will be incorporated into the 2012 season’s first event, the Red Bull Powder Disorder. Athletes from around the globe have made the August pilgrimage to the storied slopes of Las Leñas, Argentina. The names are here. The snow is here. The media is here. The stage is set for one of the most historic starts to the longest running competitive freeskiing tours in the world.

“It’s fitting that we’re celebrating the start of the 2012 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour in the center of the Andes, where it began 15 years ago,” said Bryan Barlow, competition director for the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour. “The terrain here at Las Leñas is the perfect fit to add the slopestyle element. Not all of the FWT venues are conducive to this format, which makes this stop especially unique.”

Tuesday marks the official registration and venue inspection day on the 2,000-vertical-foot face, known as Eduardos, that holds a consistent, 40-degree pitch. Unlike last year, however, skiers won’t just be looking at the terrain in terms of powder turns and cliff drops. This year, local event producers are working with key athletes to build three different jumps on the face. In meetings today with heavy hitters from MSI, Big Powder, Red Bull, and Las Leñas, the consensus was made that the first jump would be made mandatory and the second two would be optional. All of the athletes are pumped and ready to throw down with this added element."

Already taking the 2011 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour (FWT) to new heights, MSI announced today the second stop of the tour at Las Leñas, Argentina, August 25-28, 2010. After the first stop of the Subaru FWT in Chile – The North Face Chilean Freeskiing Championships presented by Smirnoff in El Colorado, Chile, August 19-21 – MSI will pack the gear and head to Las Leñas, Argentina. Freeskiing’s elite will battle it out in the Andes snow for the event title, overall World Tour points, and a cash purse.

“Its amazing that after 12 years the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour is returning to the original South American freeskiing venue, Las Leñas Argentina,” said FWT Competition Director Bryan Barlow. “It’s a true fit for the tour as the mountains are truly unrivaled in the world, allowing the athletes to showcase their progressive big mountain freesking skills that has accelerated freeskiing popularity and awareness to the mainstream around the world.  The conditions are shaping up to be a stellar snow year, and the elite that show up are in store for an incredible competition.”

And Las Leñas resort couldn’t be more excited to host the competition.

“We are very proud to be the ski resort of choice for Argentina’s first edition of the FWT,” said Las Leñas marketing manager Sofía Fernández Madero. “The natural characteristics of our mountain and the climate favors our position as a destination of excellence and real snow off-piste mecca in the region. We have everything ready to welcome the athletes participating in the event at our resort at the foot of the slopes. We believe it will be the biggest event of the season in Argentina and we hope you enjoy.”

This will truly be a memorable and exciting event to continue the kick off of the 2011 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour. Now in its 13th year, the Subaru FWT is the largest and longest running competitive Big Mountain Freeskiing tour in the history of the sport. The Subaru FWT features over $100,000 in prize money and an unprecedented six stops, including a Freeskiing World Tour Qualifier.                                               Behind the scenes POV from Revelstoke FWT by John Wells

Jan. 6th-10th  The 2nd stop of the Freeskiing World Tour brought me to Revelstoke, B.C. Canada.  Consistent rain in Washington at Mt. Baker drove me 7 hours to the interior of B.C. to check up on Revelstoke who has been in the snow since October.

Loving the sunny, cold conditions, new snow, and a good forecast things were setting up nice.  I skied in the qualifier but failed to make it to Day 1 of the event.  I had no worries that stopped me from enjoying the rest of my trip. From meeting sick skiers, exploring new lines and hooking up with some old buddies, lots of quality turns were had along with a shit-ton of fun.

Finding the goods in RMR’s expansive zones is easy with massive vertical and unparalleled terrain.  With 15 cm’s right away, and then another 6 &10 in consecutive nights the North Bowl Zone was deep and soft.  I always try to venture back to Revelstoke and Kicking Horse once a year to sample the dry fluff, big cliffs, and steeps.

A large support-cast of buddies and good friends rallied around most of the athletes on the weather day due to “Dumping snow” to rip new snow, take some leisure pow runs and focus on the next day events.

The finals were delayed a couple of hours due to weather windows not co-operating with the Helicopter.  It just didn’t want to break.  Feeling itchy to “send it” Drew Tabke and Griffin Post hiked over to launch a 25 footer behind the announcers table to give the lack-luster crowd what they came to see.  It was an inhibitor and some pockets opened up, the chopper whopped and athletes where rushed up to the top of the venue on Mackenzie Face.  Zero to Hero quick, pick your line, stick your line, go!

Men and Women athletes took pleasure in ripping this untouched face with great lines from:  Jess McMillan, Jacqui Edgerly, Drew Tabke, Julien Lopez, Chopo Diaz, Cliff Bennett, Griffin Post, Arne Backstrom, Craig Garbiel, Luke Nelson, Chuck Mumford and many more.

The 1rst of a 3 year deal to host the FWT was an incredible success, for RMR (Revelstoke Mountain Resort), MSI (Mountain Sports International) and everybody involved!  I had a great time, and would like to thank RMR and MSI for everything!

      Cheers, John Wells
