News: One Year To The Winter O News: One Year To The Winter Olympics In Sochi
- From: TetonGravityResearch

Description:
PARK CITY, UT – One year out from the opening of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, U.S. skiers and snowboarders are scattered across the globe anticipating the opportunities they will face 365 days from now. The opening ceremony for Sochi is Feb. 7, 2014, with the first medal events the next day. The USA is coming off a Best in the World Olympics in Vancouver that saw 17 different skiers and snowboarders win 21 medals.
Venues in Sochi are undergoing final tests this month. Freeskiing and snowboarding athletes will compete in World Cup test events this month with U.S. Ski Team alpine racers conducting on-snow camps.
Successful alpine test events were held a year ago with ski jumping this past December.
Sochi will debut a host of new events including the inaugural appearance of women’s ski jumping, slopestyle snowboarding along with halfpipe and slopestyle skiing.
WHERE THEY ARE NOW?
Freeskiing
Freeskiers are coming off the Visa U.S. Freeskiing Grand Prix where David Wise and Maddie Bowman swept to halfpipe titles. Athletes are preparing for the mid-February Olympic test events for halfpipe skiing and skicross at Rosa Khutor near Sochi.
Slopestyle stars Tom Wallisch, Bobby Brown and Keri Herman appeared live on NBC’s The Today Show Wednesday morning, Feb. 6.
“It's hard to believe the Olympics are only a year away!” slopestyle skier Tom Wallisch said. “It's really exciting and I hope that I am one of the lucky ones that will have the honor to represent my country. If you would have asked me a couple years ago if I thought our sport would be in the Olympics - it just wasn't on my radar. I am really looking forward to checking out Russia and this next year ahead. I am sure it's going to be a really fun roller coaster.”
Halfpipe skier Maddie Bowman is blown away by to opportunity.
“It's crazy to think that freeskiing is going to be in the Olympics,” Bowman said. “I mean, this is really happening and it's only a year away! Holy cow! The last couple months have been going so well for me and I hope that my skiing continues to improve and I can stay on top of my game. I will be keeping my eye on the countdown. I am looking forward to the next 365 days and the adventure my teammates and I are about to go on.”
David Wise, also a halfpipe skier, is excited represent his sport in the Olympics for the first time.
“The Olympics! Wow, only a year away,” Wise said. “It really is an exciting opportunity and something that I am looking forward to. Not just the potential to compete in the Olympics and all that comes with it, but the journey my teammates and I are about to embark on. It's going to be a lot of work, but this is a really special time in our lives and I am going to enjoy every minute of it - the good, the challenging and whatever comes my way.”
Snowboarding
Top snowboarders were in Laax, Switzerland, for the Burton European Open. Now it’s off to Sochi for halfpipe and SBX test events.
“I love my country and I really hope that I will be able to be on that Olympic team next year,” slopestyle rider Chas Guldemond said. “I have been trying to stay really focused and perfect my run, there are always ups and downs, but I am going to do my best to be there. I've never been to Russia and I hope that I get to be there with my team.”
Halfpipe rider Scotty Lago hopes to return to the Olympics in 2014.
“I had such a great experience in Vancouver - there was so much fun energy around the games,” Lago said. “And here we are, a year away from Sochi and all the guys are riding so well. It's been fun to watch everyone learn new tricks and ride together. The year before Vancouver had a lot of twists and turns and it all worked out well for me. I hope that I can continue to ride solid so that I have the opportunity to go to Sochi in 2014.” - Blog post

News: Shaun White With The Win News: Shaun White With The Win In Men's Snowboard Superpipe Final
- From: TetonGravityResearch
-
Description:
The Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships marked the fifth consecutive year of a winter stop at Breckenridge, Colorado, and when it comes to Superpipe this location has provided multiple ground breaking opportunities for riders and spectators alike.
This year, Dew Tour introduced to the superpipe a cable camera that runs down the center of the pipe showing the rider’s runs from drop in to finish from the front perspective – a superpipe first that truly enhanced the viewers experience.
Directly following a snowy final for the women, the clouds broke and offered some sunshine to the men making for a feel good environment for everyone.
With past years in the back of everyone’s minds, Shaun White was a favorite to come in and take home another Dew Cup to add to his collection. However, as we saw in semi-final, White is human and occasionally slips an edge and with the stiff competition this event was truly up for grabs.
By the halfway point of the competition, Louie Vito had laid down an insane first run that temporarily put him in first place with a score of a 90.00 that seemed unmatchable. Then, White rolled in and everything for before went out the window as White nailed every wall with perfection and pulled out a 95.25 and the top spot.
White’s first run held true and carried him to the top of the podium and awarded him the 2012 Men’s Snowboard Superpipe Dew Cup. White’s double mctwist 1260, or tomahawk as White prefers to reference it, was truly the trick that set his run apart from the rest, as he was the only one in the lineup with it in his arsenal.
That’s not all, since White had secured a spot on the podium, and practically guaranteed a first place with only one rider left to go, White went for another trick that only he has in his bag, a double rodeo. Although he did not pull the double rodeo, he did take home the Dew Cup.
“I think that [the new single-stop event format] is great – the Bigger, the better! When you make it a premier event like that it sets it up for everyone to bring their A-game,” said White, still taking in his victory. Looking toward the future at the 2014 Olympics to take place in Sochi, Russia, “I started training a year ago, and this is all part of it. I’m just going to keep doing what I have set out to do.”Be sure to check back shortly for complete results posted below and a photo gallery posted to the top of this article.

USHUAIA, Argentina – U.S. Freeskiing's Keri Herman (Breckenridge, CO) placed a check mark on history Friday, Sept. 7 with an FIS World Cup slopestyle skiing victory during the first 2014 Olympic Winter Games qualifying event. Great Britain’s James Woods took the win for the men. The top American male was McRae Williams (Salt Lake City) in eighth.
An X Games silver medalist, Herman won by a huge six-point margin to mark her first podium since 2011. Herman’s winning run: clean double kink rail, frontside 270, switch cork 720 bro-kang grab, switch 540, 360 safety grab, to a cork 540 mute grab.
Switzerland’s Eveline Bhend took second and Canadian Dara Howell came in third.
“This feels amazing and almost surreal. It hasn’t quite clicked in yet because I am so far away from home,” Keri Herman said. “It’s been a great week in Argentina and I had some time to figure out what I needed to do to win and I did it.”
The next chance for athletes to qualify will be Jan. 11, 2013 during the Visa U.S. Freeskiing Grand Prix at Copper Mountain, CO – part of the winter-long Sprint U.S. Grand Prix series.
Slopestyle and halfpipe skiing will make their debut at the 2014 Olympic program in Sochi, Russia. The Olympic qualifying period provides individual athletes with opportunity to achieve required international ranking in order to be eligible for Olympic selection and helps the USA earn the maximum number of nation's quota spots.
