News: Dynafit Athlete Benedikt News: Dynafit Athlete Benedikt Böhm Completes Speed Summit Of Manaslu
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
A long cherished dream of Benedikt Böhm came true on September 30. After 15 hours and 3,300 metres of climbing without oxygen, he stood on the summit of 8,163-meter Manaslu, the eighth highest mountain in the world located in Nepal. After equally exceptional climbs, his partners, Sebastian Haag and Constantin Pade, were stopped just short of the summit.
The ascent took place in the aftermath of the avalanche that claimed several lives a week before. Although over-shadowed by this tragedy, the climbers decided to make one last attempt to climb the peak because of the years of preparation and mental commitment. The fact that they had done everything possible to help the victims of the accident helped them make the decision.
“The decision to try for the summit after such a tragedy was a difficult one, but ultimately I decided to climb in their honour and it also helped me cope with the emotional challenges I was also going through from being first on-scene to such a tragedy,” said Benedikt Böhm.For Böhm and Haag, the journey up Manaslu began five years earlier. In 2007 they travelled to Manaslu with the same goal in mind, but had to turn back at 7,300 metres due to the danger of avalanches. This time around, after acclimatizing for weeks and a whole day of decision-making in base camp, the team had a stroke of luck: a weather window and stable snowpack.
Setting off at 6 p.m. from base camp at 5,000 meter and without oxygen, Benedikt and Sebastian had almost 3,300 vertical metres of climbing ahead of them to reach the summit. Conditions deteriorated at 7,400 metres and the three climbers were battling fierce storms and icy cold. Böhm, who went on ahead of the team, waited for Haag in an unoccupied tent at camp two. After an hour it was time to get underway again, and they considered abandoning the attempt, but mustered the effort to continue the ascent as a group. The wind eased off as the sun went down. Benedikt Böhm went the final 150 meters alone to reach the summit at 9 in the morning, after five hours of climbing from camp two. Happy, but humbled in remembrance of the accident a few days previously, he did not pose for the usual victory shot on the summit. Instead, he dedicated the ascent to the climbers who had died in the accident. After waiting for an hour he went back to meet with Sebastian Haag and Constantin Pade who chose to turn back 150 meters short of the summit to save their energy for a safe ski descent.
“The most important thing of any expedition is first and foremost to come home safely,” commented Sebastian Haag. “The events of the past few weeks have given me even more respect for the power of these mountains and my first goal is to see my family again.” Skiing together, the group reached base camp after 8 hours of descent. The total climb, including speed ascent and ski descent, took 23.5 hours. Typical climbs up Manaslu using oxygen take four days.It was an unbelievable achievement, not just for Benedikt Böhm, but for the whole team on Manaslu. According to official records, it is the first-ever speed ascent of Manaslu coupled with a subsequent ski descent.

News: Colorado Sees Skier Visi News: Colorado Sees Skier Visits Decline During 2011-'12 Winter Season
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Boulder, Colorado - Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) announced at its 49th Annual Meeting, that its 22 member resorts hosted an estimated 6.16 million skier visits during the 2011-'12 ski season. This represents a decrease of 11.4 percent, or approximately 790,000 skier visits, compared with last season, which was the fourth best season on record. Compared with the five year average, CSCUSA member resort skier visits are down 11.9 percent. The overall snow related decline interrupted the recovery resorts had been building since 2008-'09.
In an indication of the extreme weather impacting Colorado resorts this season, Colorado’s western slope experienced its third driest and seventh warmest winter in records going back to 1895. Precipitation on the Western Slope this winter was 43 percent below average, and down every month of the winter. In Colorado overall, March 2012 was the driest in more than 100 years, and we experienced the second warmest March on record. President and CEO of Colorado Ski Country USA Melanie Mills noted, “Fortunately, seasons such as the one just ended have proved to be historically rare and the ski industry has exhibited a remarkable ability to bounce back after poor snow years in the past.”
Mills continued, “Much of the ski industry in the US was confronted with weather challenges last year, but several of our resorts bucked the national trend and showed signs of resilience during what was clearly an uninspiring winter.”
The diversity of ski resorts in Colorado saw some areas post increases and even records in visitation. Colorado Ski Country resorts also saw strength in both domestic and international destination visitors which helped soften the economic impacts to resort operators and resort communities of the overall decline in visitation.Colorado is favorably positioned for rare dry spells given that resorts are at higher elevations where the air is dryer and colder, therefore allowing the snow to maintain consistency. Aided by colder temperatures favorable for snowmaking, resort snowmakers and slope groomers were able to maintain a quality snow surface throughout most of the season.
Momentum going into the season was strong after seeing an uptick in visitation last year, and economic conditions generally improved during the season. Abundant amounts of snow came in the fall, allowing some resorts to open earlier than planned, but the uncharacteristic precipitation deficit brought that momentum to a standstill. Snow came in the middle of the season and several resorts broke single day snowfall totals, but perception of an underperforming winter was already set in skiers’ minds. “We’ve had dry years in the past, and we’ll have dry years again,” Mills explained. “Not every year can be a record breaking year, and with nary a snowflake in what is normally our snowiest month in Colorado, season visitation numbers are disappointing, but not unexpected.”
CSCUSA resorts upheld their dedication to providing guests with a quality product and superior service which sets Colorado apart from other ski destinations, and keeps the state’s appeal as the premiere place for winter travelers. “Our resorts have so much to offer visitors that in some cases the world class skiing is just one of a menu of activities. And for many people, the season was more about being outside and spending time with friends and family taking in the beautiful outdoors and wonderful amenities of our resorts.”
With certain assumptions in place, statewide skier visits for Colorado are estimated at 11,010,584 million. This estimation shows Colorado being down 9.8 percent, or approximately 1,195,000 visits, compared with last season. On a national level, skier visits overall are down 15.7 percent with the Rocky Mountain region seeing a decrease of 7.2 percent.
Skier visits are the metric used to track participation in skiing and snowboarding. A skier visit represents a person participating in the sport of skiing or snowboarding for any part of one day at a mountain resort.
These numbers are preliminary results and subject to final adjustments by CSCUSA members. The decision to release individual numbers is up to each individual resort.
*No non-public information factors in to CSCUSA’s estimates.

Video: Steve Corbett First-Eve Video: Steve Corbett First-Ever Quadruple Backflip On Skis
- From: SamPetri
-
Description:
On April 13, 1974, at Whistler Mountain, Steve Corbett skied off a jump and traveled a distance of 170 feet, at a height of 80 feet, turning four revolutions in the air, landed and skied away. While Steve’s feat of being the first-ever skier to do a quadruple backflip has largely been lost in history due to the fact that Guinness World Records never recognized it, we now have this classic video to watch on YouTube. It’s hard to tell if he stomps it clean, but even if it was a backslap situation, you’ve got to respect the dude for really giving’er back in the day.

Video: Guinness World Records Video: Guinness World Records Confirms Garrett McNamara Surfed The Largest Wave
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
Guinness World Records can confirm that Garrett McNamara has entered the record books for surfing the largest ever wave.
The Hawaiian 44-year-old managed to surf a mammoth 78-foot wave last November at Nazaré, Portugal, a feat which has now been ratified by GWR after examining evidence.
His epic ride, which required him to be towed into the wave from a jetski, beats a record set by Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank in southern California, in 2008 by over a foot.
Garrett, a professional big wave surfer for the Body Glove International team, is part of an elite group that travels the world chasing storms and tracking swells in an effort to surf the largest waves.
In the past he has ridden breaks such as Waimea in Oahu, Mavericks in California and Todos Santos in Mexico.
Describing the record breaking wave ride, Garrett said: "It's the most challenging, dangerous wave I've ever surfed - it's the only place in the world in which a giant canyon reaches all the way to the beach".
Among those to congratulate Garrett on his achievement was Jorge Barroso, mayor of the town of Nazaré, who commended the daredevil surfer with a tribute at last week's 2012 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Award awards ceremony in Anaheim, California.
The mayor said: "It is an honour to bring this title to our waters.. For the strength, bravery and the constant will to improve. Nazaré is a bit like your second home and our population admires you."
The record for largest wave surfed (paddle-in) remains held by Shane Dorian, who managed to successfully ride a wave measured at measured 57ft (17.4 m) in height without a tow at a break known as 'Jaws' off the coast of Maui, Hawaii, USA in March last year. - Blog post

Stevens Pass Mountain Resort F Stevens Pass Mountain Resort First In WA To Win National Environmental Award
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
In its 18 year history, the ski industry’s most prestigious award has never been won by a Washington resort.
Leavenworth, WA – The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) honored Stevens Pass Mountain Resort with the 2012 Golden Eagle Award for Environmental Excellence. Stevens Pass took top environmental honors in the mid-sized resort category (200,000 to 500,000 skier visits) for its energy conservation and greenhouse gas (GHG)reduction efforts. An Oregon resort won the award in 1994 and is the only other PNW winner.
“Our company-wide focus on sustainability includes many progressive programs, and we are especially pleased to receive this national acknowledgement,” said Ross Freeman, Environment & Sustainability Manager for Stevens Pass.
Energy conservation programs at Stevens Pass include simple measures such as upgraded lighting, occupancy sensors, timers, and improved operational protocols, as well as more complex projects such as a comprehensive third-party energy audit, building equipment retrofits, and solar power installations.
Greenhouse gas reduction efforts include extensive food waste compost programs, tracking of fuel consumption for all vehicles and snow machinery, no-idling policies, the purchase of cleaner engines (e.g. 4-stroke snowmobiles; low-emissions snowcats and front loaders), electric vehicles, and investment in employee transit. Last year the resort completed the installation of two public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, the nation’s first to be located in a mountain pass environment, and at the time the only units located at any ski resort.
Many other environmental projects are also underway, such as on-slope recycling, preferential purchasing of local food ingredients, and active surplus property/re-use procedures.
“We are always looking for ways to reduce our impacts, save money through efficiency, and do the right thing for the mountain environment for years to come,” said Freeman.
In addition to all its onsite GHG programs, for the past five years Stevens Pass has also chosen to offset a full 100 percent of its electricity and propane consumption through renewable energy credits and carbon offsets from non-polluting windpower. By making this investment to support clean energy for everyone, the resort has funded 21,289,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of windpower, and prevented the emission of 16,182 tons of CO2, or the equivalent of taking 2,878 cars off the road for a year.
Stevens Pass believes it has a responsibility to the environment and is one of the few resorts nationwide with full time environmental staff.
“We know that combating global warming is critical for the future of our entire industry, and we seek to lead resorts across the PNW by example,” said Freeman.
The NSAA’s Golden Eagle award comes on the heels of another notable award from the Washington State Recycling Association, which recently named Stevens Pass as Recycler of the Year – a category won last year by the Seattle Mariners baseball team.
Last December, Stevens Pass was thrilled to receive a national top ten ranking, and the highest score in the PNW, from the Ski Area Citizens’ Coalition annual Report Card, which uses public records and extensive surveys to rank the environmental practices of Western ski resorts. - Blog post

Jackson Hole Snowboarder Maga Jackson Hole Snowboarder Magazine's Final Party With Yelawolf, DJ Craze and El Gant
- From: SamPetri
-
Description:
Jackson Hole Snowboarder Magazine has always done it real big. For the past seven years publisher Jesse Brown, art director Kristen Joy and advertising salesman Michael “Fudge” Bills have put together a high-quality glossy shred ’zine dedicated to showcasing Jackson Hole snowboard culture. To celebrate the annual publication, the three founders have always thrown an issue release party that brings together all the people in Jackson who love to ride. The result has been one of the rowdiest, most fun events of the winter in the Tetons. Past musical artists who have played the party include The Beatnuts, Brother Ali and even Justin Timberlake.

On Saturday at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, Alabama rapper Yelawolf, who is signed to Eminem’s Shady Records, performed with DJ Craze for the magazine’s seventh issue release party. Underground rapper El Gant opened the party that may be the last one ever, as the magazine is set to shutter after this issue.
“It's the last issue because I'm going to give New York City a try after this winter and I just can't run it from there,” publisher Jesse Brown said. “We are still trying to figure out what's going to happen to the snowboarder magazine, but don't know yet. We've worked real hard to make something different and can only be proud of what we've attempted and accomplished.”
Although the party’s $50 ticket price was awfully steep, attendees were rewarded with an entertaining hour-long set by Yelawolf followed by a solo set by DJ Craze, who spun music into the night.
“I snowboarded for the third time ever today,” Yelawolf said when he took the stage. “I took the tram right to the top of that mountain. I even hit a jump and a rainbow rail.”
Yelawolf then performed his unique style of music that celebrates both southern rock and southern rap. After winning over the audience with his original tunes, he rapped over songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Cash and he even did a cover of Outkast’s “B.O.B (Bombs Over Baghdad).”
Our good friend, photographer and creator of the video “A Tiny Day in the Jackson Hole Backcountry,” Tristan Greszko was there to capture the scene. Scroll down to view photos from what may be the last Jackson Hole Snowboarder Magazine party ever.

Four Snowpacks Over 100 Inches Four Snowpacks Over 100 Inches Deep Right Now
- From: ryandunfee
-
Description:
It’s safe to say that the majority of North American skiers and riders are looking at their snow tires and pow skis and wishing they spent the money on a mountain bike instead. After a freakish 2010-'11 winter that saw most of the US and Canada breaking snowfall records, it appears — for the time being — that the pendulum has swung the complete opposite direction. But that’s not the case everywhere. Fortunately the Northwest, Alaska, and Europe have been getting hammered. Here’s a look at four snowpacks that are over 100 inches deep right now.

Cody Townsend rips some Christmas powder at Alyeska Resort in Alaska. Photo by Charlie Renfro.
Alyeska Resort, Alaska - 109 inches
AK is famous for delivering the steep and deep. But that’s usually in April. Instead, AK has been a bright spot on the early-season radar, with the top of Alyeska sitting under a 109-inch base. Cody Townsend was there Christmas Week to get his faceshot fix with his newly-wed wife and Anchorage native Elyse Saugsted. The report? Blower. Everyday.
Mt. Baker has snow, 117 inches of it.
Mt. Baker, Washington - 117 inches
After picking up 857 inches last season, it looked like déjà vu for the locals when opening day in November saw the mountain flush with two feet of pow. While a lull of high pressure hit the region before Christmas, it appears that the snowtrain is back on the tracks. The top of Pan Dome is now counting a 117-inch base.
Lots of powder snow at Shames Mountain. Photo by Thomas Gould.
Shames Mountain, British Columbia - 130 inches
Well, BC has snow again. Should anyone be surprised? British Columbia seems to be as isolated from high-pressure systems as Iowa is from the foreclosure crisis, with the exception of the odd Pineapple Express. While much of the Northwest started off with a bang, the Canadians were the only ones who could keep the momentum going all the way through to the present. Shames Mountain, the quirky little co-op profiled this fall in Jordan Manley’s “A Skier’s Journey” webisode, is packing a hearty 130-inch base at mid-mountain these days. With the co-op looking for a new owner, the phrase “good timing” comes to mind.
Faceshots out the front door in St. Anton.
St. Anton Arlberg, Austria - 215 inches
If there is anyone who truly deserves to be happy with the way things are going this winter, it’s the Europeans. The past few seasons have been meager at best, with much of the region sitting high and dry. But now every schusser and fraulien is happily faceshotten on a regular basis, with over 15 resorts reporting a base deeper than 150 inches. Taking the cake? Austria’s St. Anton Arlberg, with a 215-inch base. That’s right – two hundred and fiteen inches. No typo. While many resorts across Europe are closing due to the extreme avalanche danger, when things calm down, there’s no doubt that conditions in the nicht praepariert (off-piste) will be all-time. - Blog post

News: Simon Dumont Now Skiing News: Simon Dumont Now Skiing On HEAD Team
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
U.S. Superstar from Bethel, Maine Inks Three Year Agreement
November 9, 2011
Norwalk, Connecticut — Inventive, fearless and unique, freeskier Simon Dumont sets records almost everywhere he goes. There is no other halfpipe skier in the world who pushes the sport forward as notably as Simon. And as of today, the 25-year-old superstar from Bethel, Maine, will combine his extraordinary talents with the unparalleled performance and innovation of HEAD Ski equipment. As the newest member of the HEAD team, Simon has entered into a three year agreement with HEAD and joins fellow superstars Lindsey Vonn, Bode Miller, Ted “Shred” Ligety, Aksel Lund Svindal, Didier Cuche, Maria Riesch, Anja Pärson and Lizz Görgl.
“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Simon to our Rebel team of ski athletes. Simon is widely regarded as one of the most creative and highly-respected freeskiers in the world, which fits perfectly with our leadership in performance and innovation,” said Johan Eliasch, CEO of the HEAD group.
“I am stoked to be on the HEAD team, and to ski with HEAD product,” said Simon Dumont. “After testing other brands, it was obvious that HEAD makes the best equipment, and every year it seems their athletes win more often than for any other brand in the world. I’m psyched to be part of this winning team.”
Simon’s Career Highlights
Born with amplitude, aptitude and attitude, the young daredevil made his debut at the Winter X Games at the age of 14, where he proved to veteran skiers that he was a force to be reckoned with.
During his first year, he won the Whistler Invitational Super Hit and placed 4th at the U.S. Open. Dumont dominated in the 2004 X Games, taking gold and instantaneously earned the title of the best pipe rider in the world, again repeating the win in 2005.
In 2007 Dumont reclaimed his title as king of the mountain when he took home 1st place wins in three of four competitions on the Honda Ski Tour, making him the overall winner.
2008 was another big year for Dumont, not only winning another silver medal in Superpipe at the Winter X Games, but also making world and ski history by setting the world record for height on a quarterpipe, soaring 35 feet and beating the previous record by an incredible two and a half feet.
Among his proudest achievements, Dumont was crowned 2009’s Freeskiing’s Overall World Champion, and took home first and second place wins at NBC’s Winter Dew Tour.
Dumont broke yet another world record in May of 2011, changing the ski world forever by successfully skiing the first ever cubed halfpipe.
Dumont dominates as a new-school skier, accumulating more victories and awards than any other halfpipe skier in the world. News: 2010 Ski Area Environmen News: 2010 Ski Area Environmental Report Cards Are In
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
December 1, 2010
Ski resorts across the west improved environmental ratings for the fourth year in a row during the recession according to the 2010/2011 Ski Area Environmental Report Card, released each year by the Ski Area Citizens Coalition. The 82 ski resorts scattered throughout the West saw an average improvement of 2% in their overall scores. Rating improvement trends resulted from resorts investing in water and energy efficiency projects and for not proposing or implementing terrain expansions into sensitive lands.
“Ski areas are not developing as much new terrain in sensitive areas,” According to Paul Joyce Ski Area Citizens Research Director. “Is this due to an environmental commitment? Or when the economy turns will the treads on the bulldozers turn also.”
According to Richard McIntyre, Sierra Nevada Alliance Campaigns Director “Ski areas spent money on energy efficiency such as upgrading windows, employing solar power and improving public transportation, but this won’t compensate for taking out endangered species habitat or bulldozing a wetland. We hope their environmental efficiency mindset extends to their development strategy as the economy improves.”
Overall resorts improved for the 4th year in a row,” said Ryan Bidwell Executive Director of Colorado Wild. “But we’re concerned the environmental trend is skin thin and not a total mindset. We hope the days of bull dozing streams and serving eviction notices to wildlife to add a new ski-run are truly over, we expect no less.”
“Though there are some outliers, as a whole we’re happy to see that resorts appear to be taking their environmental performance and practices more seriously,” said Norma Ryan of Ski Area Citizens. “Of 82 ski areas evaluated, only Taos New Mexico made an environmental face plant, and 26 areas received an overall grade of “B” or better. That speaks well for future of the industry.”
The Ski Area Citizens Coalition is comprised of conservation groups around the west, including Colorado Wild and the Sierra Nevada Alliance. The Full Report Card for all 82 resorts and more details can be found at www.skiareacitizens.com. The Ski Area Citizens Coalition (SACC) has been publishing the Ski Area Report Card for the past 10 years. The Report Card evaluates the environmental policies and practices of ski areas based on a system of 40 criteria. The criteria to evaluate performance includes grading ski areas on their preservation of sensitive lands within the ski resort areas and their actions related to water conservation and quality, and commitment to green programs such as recycling and energy efficiency.
Skiers and snowboarders can easily email resorts through the website www.skiareacitizens.com, thanking resorts for their environmental stewardship or encouraging them to improve their environmental policies and management.
Scorecard data is obtained from an annual survey, public records from government agencies, and from the resorts themselves. Freedom of Information Act and Public Records Act requests are filed with appropriate land managers to identify ski area development projects and management plans each spring. Resorts are also asked to fill out surveys regarding their on-mountain environmental programs. All source documents can be viewed on the website.

Vonn Named Athlete of the Deca Vonn Named Athlete of the Decade
- From: media-75233
-
Description:
PARK CITY, Utah (Jan. 1) –Two-time World Champion Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) has been named the Female Athlete of the Decade by NBC’s Universal Sports joining Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man, for the 10-year honor.
The full story is available at www.UniversalSports.com, but Vonn and Bolt also gained similar accolades from long-time Olympic journalist Phil Hersh, whose column appears in both the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune.
“It’s incredible to think about where I was as a person and an athlete in 2000 and then compare that to where I am now,” said Vonn, who has set and reset records in alpine skiing the past two winters. “Skiing is my life and I wouldn’t trade that for anything. I’ve traveled the world, raced in two Olympics and am getting ready for a third. It’s what I’ve dreamed of since I was a little kid.”
The definition of determination, Vonn made a name for herself following a horrific downhill training crash at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. She was airlifted to the hospital in Torino and told she should sit out the race, but for Vonn that wasn’t an option. She finished eighth and was given the Olympic Spirit Award for her bravery by her Olympic peers.
Three years later at the 2009 Audi FIS Alpine World Championships, Vonn won the super G and downhill gold medals in Val d’Isere, France.
Following the downhill win, she unknowingly grasped a bottle of champagne with a broken top and severed a tendon in her thumb. She had surgery the next day then returned to the World Championships to compete in the final race. She went on to podium in the next four consecutive races, then defended her World Cup overall and downhill titles, plus added a super G title and set an American World Cup victory record for women.
“It’s really hard to quantify the last two seasons,” said Vonn. “Definitely winning the downhill World Championship was the biggest single day of my career, but I’m hoping to change that in Vancouver. I’ve never won an Olympic medal – one of any color will be just fine for me and I’m going to work harder than ever to put myself in a position to make that happen.”
And she isn’t letting setbacks stand in her way.
Case-in-point: The now famous violent crash she sustained Monday in a World Cup giant slalom in Lienz, Austria resulting in bruising to her left arm. Again, missing the slalom the following day was not an option.
“When I immediately had crashed, I thought for sure it was broken. It felt terrible and I immediately was thinking ‘OK, how can I ski with a broken arm.’ But after we got the MRI and more information later on it was a much more positive outlook and thankfully I don’t have to have a cast. We’ll just make due with another brace just like we did last year and go through some more duct tape. I think I need a duct tape sponsorship,” she joked.
Vonn celebrated New Year’s Eve with her husband at the U.S. Ski Team’s European Training Base in Zell am See-Kaprun, Austria. But she’s also been resting and gearing up for Sunday’s World Cup slalom in Zagreb, Croatia – the biggest technical race of the season paying 50,000 Euro or just over $71,700 to the winner.
“Zagreb is always such an awesome race and I’m going to do my best to be ready,” said Vonn. “It’s the World Cup slalom that everyone wants to win. The Croatian organizing committee is incredible and the fans there are so supportive. I’m certainly going to try my best, arm brace and all.”
Sunday’s slalom will stream live on www.UniversalSports.com beginning at 3:45 a.m ET.
