  • Ass, Cash, or Grass Ass, Cash, or Grass

    • From: sbcskier
    • Description:

Leah Evans had a crazy idea to reclaim the ultimate old-school ski adventure by forcing herself and friends to have one. That sounded like a pissing contest to us. Next thing we knew three teams were ready to do battle: an all-female squad was up against a male counterpart and an equipe co-ed. Each team included a photographer to capture the mayhem generated by being forced to start in the same location—Charlie’s Diner in Salmo, B.C.—with the same survival pack stuffed with a $300 stake, a treasure-hunt style list of stuff to do, and a random direction, they would have to lead off for at least 40 kilometres before turning toward the ultimate destination of Revelstoke.

      Ass, Cash, or Grass

Once in Revelstoke, the teams would present a slideshow to be MCed by local ginger mountain man Joe Lammers and judged by a panel of their peers with the gathering, naturally, erupting into a massive celebration. We don’t remember how this all got worked out. And we have no idea what the title of this article actually means. But it’s as a good a name for a contest as any contributor has ever dreamt up so it stands. What follows are frontline reports from each team: remember, these are skiers, not writers, so they tell it like it is. Ish...

Conditions are pretty solid in Haines right now. We have flown 4 out of 6 days. The snow is knee to waist deep and stable. We have been moving into some bigger lines. There is a little threat of buried pepper with such light snow, so you have to be smart in your line selection. We have a great crew up here with Seth Morrison, Ian Macintosh, Tanner Hall and Eric Roner. It's always nice to be back in Alaska this time of year. The last photo in the slideshow was a cool mission. Ian Machit a gnarly triple stage line and double ejected. We had to tow in our guide Kent Scheler and have him jump 10 ft. out to do a ski recovery.
We are poised and ready wih some nice lines on the table when we get good weather. Check back often for more updates from the field.

Erik Roner riding backlit powder**Erik Roner drops in for some backlit powder. The snow has been all time in Haines this spring**

Tanner Hall switch powder**Tanner Hall has been riding with the TGR crew alot this year. He is gettng primed up in the big mountain realm. It is cool to see him bring his freestyle background to this world. His potential to throw down some mad fusion lines is huge. Here he warms up with a switch pow SAR run.**

Heli Drop Off**Here is Seth Mosrrison getting dropped off on a super nice powder face. We warm into things in Alaska slowly, ticking off small line first and moving up to the big stuff when it is ready. Check out the Plume of powder on this drop off.**

Seth Morrison Contrails**Seth reaps the rewards of a fat storm. Seth lays one of the meanest turns in the business. Check out this contrail as he drops in on a warm up run.**

      Ian Mcintosh gets towed in

**Ian Mcintosh gets towed into a gnarly triple stage line. Mac rides super aggresively. This line had three airs and a crazy drop off in the ship. The fun never stops in Alaska.**

Ski recovery heli launch**Mac nailed this line but through a ski at the bottom. The mountain was scraped dry and there was no way to ride down and recover his ski. By the time he stopped sliding he was way below. Our pilot Mike Wilson was quick to say, "Kent(our guide) get in the ship. I'll take you in and hover and you can jump out at the ski." Kent hucked a 10 footer out of the heli and made a quick recovery. Mac was buying beers.**

      Sage’s AK training
Story and Photo’s by Pete O’Brien

Last Friday Sage left his house at 4:30 am to film on the first sunny powder day Utah has seen in a while.

After a 2 ½ hour car ride and a ½ hour tow in with a sled he got to the zone only to find everything so buried that he had to wade through armpit deep snow in order to get to the top of each ski line.

On his third lap he chose to ski a squiggly mainline that had an opening at the bottom which was barely shoulder width wide.  Two turns into the line he started to scratch rocks and decided to just point it.  As he gained momentum, narrowly avoiding a rock feature on one ski, he turned his upper body sideways to make it out of the choke.

At the bottom Sage explained how everyday he skis, he considers it training for Alaska and since he was boarding a plane for Haines the next morning at 8am, this was his last day of training.
